I like the 38s a lot. I don't have caliper to measure but didn't have an 
issue on the rims.

I like the 38s a lot. I don't have caliper to measure but didn't have an 
issue on the rims. You can't go much wider with the tires though and the 
frame.

On the bars, with the mustache I would definitely go short stem. I think so 
much depends on body type am not sure I could say how it changes the bike. 
I'll add some new photos once the storm passes.

[RBW] FS 48 Sam Hillborne $3000 OBO plus shipping

I am selling for my ex-wife a 48 mm Sam Hillborne. I purchased the frame 
and built it up at a local shop. The bike has hardly been ridden since It 
was built up. I am happy to share details and take any additional photos. I 
plan to keep the rack and can include the basket if it fits in the box. 
Rich built wheels and dynamo hub but don't currently have a light on it. I 
can see if I have one to include. Bike is in PDX.

This is one of my favorite bikes. I am 6 ft, 85 PBH and also roads a 55 
Sam. This size fit me perfect. Hope someone buys it soon.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Roadeo 59

I am trying to thin out the number of bikes. I'm going to keep the Ram and 
sell the Roadeo. This is an amazing bike. 

Selling a great condition Rivendell Roadeo 59 cm. Bike is in great shape 
and comes with Shimano Ultegra 10 speed, Tektro brakes, Thompson seat post, 
Nitto Stem and Bar. I plan to keep the seat and pedals but might have 
alternatives if you are interested.  Frame new starts at $2800. Seat is at 
75 mm. I have different stems I can include.  I have several wheel options 
as including some Chris King Velocity rim wheels, and the A23 rims.

[RBW] Dynamo Hub Recommendations

I was curious what folks experience are with the different dynamo hub 
options.  The Schmidt Sonn Dynamo hub seem to set the standard but at a 
high cost.  The other two I was looking at are Shutter Precision and the 
Shimano Dynamo hubs.  Anyone seen a good comparison? Should I be concerned 
with reliability if I went with something cheaper than the Schmidt hub?

Jim - thank you for all you do for this forum to keep it going. I do really 
value it and the community. I also see how some threads digress and lose 
civility and I don’t envy your role to manage that. 

I don’t think Jan’s post was off topic or inappropriate though and I think the 
Blahg is evidence of this.  Rivendell’s values and mission align with the BLM 
movement. There are years of systemic racism and sexism in bike culture and 
history that Grant highlighted this week and many times before, and I hope we 
can also continue to challenge this history wherever and whenever we can.  I do 
think there is a level of white privilege to expect to come to this forum and 
not have to hear about what our neighbors face everyday just for being black or 
brown, or gay, or trans, etc and be confronted with what is happening in this 
world.  I do think everyone should be expected to be civil to each other, be 
respectful and at times let the thread stop.

would love to hear what others would read.  I am heartened by how many folks 
are speaking up right now about what is happening in this country and the 
systems of injustice. There are many ways to be a good person in the world but 
not one that involves the exploitation, abuse and dehumanization of human 
beings. At least today there was a glimmer of hope for our LGBTQ+ friends, 
family and neighbors.

[RBW] Re: Roadini heavy?

I agree with Bill's take but I often do.  I have the Roadini, Rambouillet 
and Roadeo.  All ride great.  The Roadeo is setup as a light road bike and 
built up differently so hard to compare.  The Roadini definitely reminds me 
of the Romulus in feel, but also built in a similar way.  On my Ram I can 
run 35 mm tires with fenders but haven't tried not he Roadini.  I would 
probably choose my Ram over the Roadini but love the classic lugs and 
orange.  I tried selling the Roadini but didn't put much effort into it, 
but only because all three is excessive. 

I also love my BMC Monstercross and run got the disc with 42 mm tires in 
pink. I wouldn't compare the bikes and I use them for different purposes 
but can't go wrong with any BMC or Rivendell.  The Model 0 BMC looks 
awesome.

[RBW] FS 56 MUSA Atlantis 650b Great Condition

I decided I have too many bikes and need to sell at least one.  This is a 
really nice, great condition, typical Rivendell build.  This is a MUSA 
Atlantis, 650 B, size 56.  My PBH is 85.5 and I fit.  It might be a little 
small.  I was planning on keep the racks, but happy to consider including.  

These bikes are hard to know what they are worth.  I am not in a rush to 
sell but wanted to put it out there.  I am asking for $2500 plus shipping. 
I will have it professionally packaged.  I am happy to answer questions.

Thanks Doug. You are right it needs more information.  I can't find the 
MUSA Geometry chart but I am confident someone has it.  I think it is 
similar to the Toyo Atlantis but with longer chain stays - I want to say 
47-48 mm for Waterford, versus 52 range for the new MIT version, and 45 for 
the Toyo.

Here is an old listing that the previous bike mechanic posted I traded for 
it. I traded a 58 Atlantis that Doug connected me with and I bought from 
the list. I rode it maybe 200 miles since I traded for it, mostly because 
of Covid and very little bike commuting. 

It has Nitto Noodle bars, Shimano brakes, bar ends but not Shimano (can't 
tell name), Origin Seatpost but probably have a Nitto and can look, Brooks 
C17 but could trade it for a leather B17, Cx-70 Canti Brakes, Sugino Crank 
triple, 9 speed cassette, Deore Rear derailleur, and Pasela 42 mm tires. 
The Wheels are Velocity Atlas wheels, Atlas rims with Velocity Hubs. 
Everything looks in great shape.  I found one small paint chip on the top 
tube and will add a picture when the sun is shining.

[RBW] Re: FS 56 MUSA Atlantis 650b Great Condition.

Bill is right.  The bike looks like it was recently built up before I 
bought it so it is great shape but I could be convinced to part it out.  It 
really just depends on price.  I don't want to spend a lot of time selling 
individual parts.  The build is very Rivendell, and in great shape.

I added some more photos and details of the bike.  There are some small 
scratches that I tried to capture.  I would say the bike looks in very good 
shape but it isn't pristine.  Has the type of scratches, dirt you would 
expect from a very well maintained bike used mostly on roads. 

The picture of the saddle height is at 72 in one pic, at the request of 
someone on the list.  I forgot to measure standover but I would expect 
81-82 cm.  I'll drop the asking price to $2000.  If I don't get anyone that 
is interesting in a couple of weeks I'll think about selling a partial 
build.

I might try to switch it to drops this weekend or next.  I appreciate the 
advice Bill.  The stem is also currently to long for the Albastasche.  

A couple of questions that came up:

The bike pictured currently has 38 mm Rene Here (Compass) tires.  I think 
it could easily fit 33s with Fenders.
My PBH is 85 and the bike fits well but on the small end for me.  My 58 Ram 
fits bigger.

How did the conversion impact handling?  Would you recommend making the

I have an 85 PBH and ride a 56 Waterford I am debating selling but not 
because of fit.  I also rode a 58 Toyo Atlantis.  Both were great and I 
would have gone just with wheel size.  I would buy a 53 MIT and ride a 55 
Joe Appaloosa.

Thank you for the feedback.  I wish the Jones was easier to test ride, but 
not many shops carry it.  However, my in-laws do live near Talent so I 
might have to swing by.  The more I ride the Joe, and now that I have 
Boscos on it, the more I like the fat tire, long chainstay design.  Of 
course the Joe has 52, with the Jones a "short" 48. $1800 seems really 
reasonable, though shipping is quite a bit extra. The Jones seems like a 
good Rivish mountain bike with discs.

Any Riv would work. The Sam is probably the middle bike between a lighter road 
bike (Roadini) option or the more loaded touring, LHT type bike (Joe and MIT 
Atlantis).  A Clem is a good cheaper option to the LHT side. Since you want
Fenders and probably wider tires I might forgo the Roadini.

Eric. Thanks for the ride reports. I really enjoyed the Clem right up and enjoy 
the blog. I would be curious to know why you sold the Jones. I am thinking of 
rounding out my bikes with a Jones. I currently have a Joe, Romulus and 
Monstercross, and I don’t think there would be much overlap with a Jones. This 
would mean selling a Rambouillet and Sam.

I have a 58 Ram and 57 Rom and there does feel like a difference. I wonder if 
it is in my head. They are built similar but different wheels. The models are 
the same geometry and supposedly 98% the same. The Ram feels like a more 
flexible lovely ride. Perhaps it is just the color orange. At some point I’ll 
probably post a Romulus for sale. I am 210 so anything thinner then 858 
probably would be a bad idea.

I have a Joe and test rode the MIT atlantis. The MIT Atlantis actually reminded 
me of the Sam hillborne with the difference being 650B. I think it is the 
shorter top tube. Personally I preferred the MIT Atlantis with the shorter top 
tube and 650B to my current Joe. The Joe will probably go up for sale at some 
point.

Woudn’t the weight difference between a Roadini and Roadeo frame built the same 
be about 1-2 lbs?  I would assume it is not just the weight but the flex of the 
frame.
