Re: [RBW] More, or less lights/reflectivity better?

2016-05-05 Thread John Phillips
Dill Pickle Gear also makes great reflective velcro ankle bands.

I read a study (forgot where) that concluded that reflective ankle bands
made bicyclists more visible & identifiable to approaching drivers from a
longer distance, so someone has tried to determine what makes cyclists more
visible at night.

[RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-13 Thread John Phillips
It almost sounds to me like Grant is arguing with himself inside his own
noggin over adding disc brakes to his line up. Or was this started by
customers?

As I was reading, I thought to myself, "Ok, my Hunqapillar is a touring
bike rated to carrying a load up to 360lbs, we (Riv & I) live in the East
bay hills & near the Sierras, Grant advocates fenders for riding in all
weather, so...why not build a touring bike with disc brakes?"

Are customers or would-be customers pestering Grant over his choice of
brakes?

[RBW] Re: How to keep your bike from getting stolen.

2016-05-19 Thread John Phillips
I found a column in an online bike rag yesterday, can't remember where, in
which the columnist said Pitlock wheel skewers will eventually strip and
need replacement.

This guy said his lasted three years before needing to be replaced.

Has anyone here had any experiences with Pitlock skewers wearing out? Does
anyone replace theirs on a regular basis?

Or has anyone had trouble getting the seatpost pitlock tight enough to keep
your seatpost from slipping?

Thanks in advance,

No philosophical problem with zip-ties here, but my zip-ties fail if I wrap

But I've become disenchanted with the whole front-basket-floppy-thing. Now
my Mark's Rack just holds my fender & Edelux.

Rivendell should teach classes on how to install these things the right way.

They add some hardware that doesn't come in the box, like a cool bolt &

Very cool.

[RBW] Using Stainless vs Carbon Steel Bolts for Racks?

Hi,

Is there a significant difference in the strength of stainless vs
carbon steel M5 allen bolts when it comes to mounting the lower rack
supports to the frame?

If one was worried about heavier loads and/or bumpy roads, would one want
to choose one over the other when it comes to the loads our racks are made
for, such as the recommended limits for Nitto front & back racks?

Thanks much,

[RBW] Hub Area Rack, new versus old?

2014-11-25 Thread John Phillips
Hi,
Has there been any more talk of Riv selling hoops for the older (last
July's) version of the HAR?

I notice the hub area racks have been re-designed and are quite a bit
different from the ones that came out last summer.

Shortly after I purchased mine, Riv said they were going to come out with a
version with the hoop, and hoops for the first HAR's, but I haven't heard
anything more about it.

I'd appreciate it if anyone has heard anything they can share.

Thanks,

How much weight are you people loading into your HAR's?

Someone told me theirs had started to work it's way loose while holding

Maybe lots of Locktite on the bolt threads is a good idea?

Ball peen hammer?

These don't look like the hammered rivets on the B67 select. These are the
regular steel rivets on a standard B67.

I transfered my wife's saddle to my bike to see if I could feel what she
felt, and she was right, I could feel the sharp edges of the rivets through
my blue jeans.

Ok, I'm glad I asked you guys before I started in.

I'll start with a file or files, and see if that won't fix the sharp bits

I sure wish Brooks fixed these sharp rivets before the saddles left the

You're not scratching your saddle, you're creating beausage, the patina of
love and use!

Or you can strip and spread your shirt down on the ground to spare your
loved one any discomfort.

Bonus points for each 10 degree drop in wind chill below 32F/0C, extra
bonus points if you use your pants!

Demerits if you drag your bike across the ground seat side down, or if you
change the tire in the mud, or a mess of cow patties.

I'd say, "Ready, set go!", but that would be racing.

[RBW] Bar Ends vs Paul Thumbies? Anyone tried both?

Thank you everyone for your info & opinions. You've all been a big help. It
looks like reversed Thumbies under the brake levers might be the way to go
with the Ergons.

And thanks for pointing out the GC-1's, I had forgotten about those, and
they look near perfect for the Alba's.

It's also good to know I'm not the only one who keeps bumping their bar end
shifters. I felt like a complete klutz.

I think I'll ride my current set up a week or two more before I make up my

Next time try a sheet of bubble foil insulation cut to fit under a

And closed cell foam pads are safer than inflatables like Thermarest pads,
especially when a leak in the pad could be a disaster.

Or in an emergency, sleep on top of your panniers.

If wind is always likely, stick with the tent rather than a bivy.

And I apologize if I sound like your mom. :)

[RBW] Small Sackville Saddlesack, will it fit, or will it sag?

2015-10-16 Thread John Phillips
Hi,

I'm looking for something bigger than the XS Sackville saddlebag to use
when I'm not using a rear rack.

I'm one of those who doesn't have much space to spare between the saddle
of my 54cm Hunq, and the rear tire, especially when I'm riding fatter
tires. When I checked again this morning, I only have about 8 inches of
clearance with Clement MSO's.

Does the Small Sackville saddlebag keep it's shape? Does the stiffener
eventually bend and give the bag a different, deeper shape? Does the Small
Sackville do best with lighter loads, or a supportive strap like the Medium
Sackville?

Any views, experiences, gripes, rants, exclamations of glee, opinions or
advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

John

[RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-16 Thread John Phillips
Instead of running just one strap from the rack tombstone to the
handlebars, I always ran a strap from each front corner of my basket to the
handlebar / stem junction, and one strap down to the base of the tombstone.
Did this with both my Mark's and Nitto 32F racks. I also never overloaded
my rack basket combo by more than 2-3 lbs, mostly because I don't really
like how the handling changed. Just an empty basket and medium Shopsack
alone added up to 2 lbs already.

I couldn't see how just one strap to the tombstone was going to save my
bacon if the rack failed on top of a knobby tire.

The Riv website still mentions ziptie-ing a basket to the Mark's Rack.
How comprehensive / serious is this warning not to use baskets? Is it more
of a caution (nudge nudge wink wink, we don't use baskets do we?)???

[RBW] Re: Reflections On My Riv and A Weight Loss Program

2018-08-17 Thread John Phillips
Hi Kiley,

Wally's idea of installing a ramp on the steps is a good one, unless
your steps are too steep and your new bike too heavy to push up as you
climb your steps.

Even better, could you remodel your porch? Put in something like a wheel
chair access ramp?

We are 56 & 59, and live on the 3rd floor of our building. We carry our
Betty Foy, Hunqapillar & A Homer Hilsen through narrow twisting hallways,
up and down 2 flights of stairs at home, plus stairs at train and metro
rail stations, and so we have a little experience with your problem with
carrying bikes up down stairs, and here's what works for us:

1) Those leather strap handles really work. Your bikes center of gravity is
nice & low and much more comfortable. I ordered ours from Walnut Studiolo:
Walnut
Studiolo "Little Lifter"

2) I took the racks off the bikes. Back racks make carrying a bike more
difficult. Carrying a bike with the weight of a rack in the front is easier
than carrying a bike with a rack in the back, but no racks at all makes
carrying easier. I use a lightweight daypack or messenger bag, something
left over from my commuting days. If your stuff if secure on your back,
it's much easier to carry your bike.

OR: I use a Pass & Stow porteur rack on the front, and use a lightweight
porteur bag with a shoulder strap. Some people are making them out of X-PAC
these days. I skip the basket. This is heavier than a small front rack &
basket, but more secure, and the weight distribution is still good when it
comes time to climb up or down the stairs. I carry the bag on my shoulder
when I need to negotiate stairs.

Best of luck,
John

I have heard of failures of the fork crown bolt or the diving board
plate on the Mark's rack, but I would really like to see how much weight,

[RBW] Re: Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-11 Thread John Phillips
I think one of the reasons Riv staff really like using a front basket is
that it balances a bike such that it makes carrying a bike easier when it
comes to going up & down stairs. Some of the Riv staff navigate flights of
stairs on their commutes on Bay Area BART trains and maybe in their
apartment buildings. This is another reason they appreciate using left-hand
down tube bar end shifters to keep their eyeballs safe.

I using a front basket for loads made carrying my bike up and down
stairs much easier compared to using a rear load. For riding, I prefer my
load in a saddlebag, but my Mark's rack is perfect for mounting my dynamo
light and I have my front fender bolted to it as well.

Hi, Thanks for the campaign sign recycling suggestions, but I was really
wondering if the Bagboy was designed for and came with a stffener like my

carry 4 or 5 lb u-locks.

[RBW] Re: Compass Antelope Pass 700 x 55: the fat tire arms race continues

2018-10-13 Thread John Phillips
I finally got around to putting these on my 2013 Hunqapillar after
ordering a new Velocity Cliffhanger wheelset from Riv. On Cliffhangers,
these are a true 55mm wide, and I have lots of clearance on this bike,
except that I had to remove my Pletscher kickstand to keep it from rubbing
the rear tire. Not a big problem.

These are my first tubeless compatible rims & tires, but I found a
little patience & a pair of Crank Brothers Speedier tire levers & inflating
the inner tube to about 50 psi got the beads seated properly.

These ride like big fat extralight Compass tires, but I can only
directly compare them to 55mm Big Bens which I didn't really like too much.

[RBW] Anyone compared Schwable Almotions to Supremes?

2018-11-05 Thread John Phillips
Been getting too many flats lately, perhaps due to all the construction
in my neighborhood, so I'm trying to decide which touring tire to try out
in the 50-55mm range. Has anyone compared the Schwalbe Marathon Almotion to
the Marathon Supreme?

I'm hoping for a tire to get me home from the store with my wife's mochi
ice cream intact without having to go as far as Mondials or the Marathon
pluses.

Thnx,
John

[RBW] Re: Anyone compared Schwable Almotions to Supremes?

2018-11-05 Thread John Phillips
Patrick, my flats are caused by broken glass, wires and urban construction
debris rather than goat heads.

I've been trying to run my errands on Compass tires, but I really can't
afford the time it takes to fix a flat when my wife's ice cream is on
board. So I'm trying to find the "most supple," "flat-resistant" touring
tire I can find in 50-55mm. Or am I asking for too much from a tire?

[RBW] Re: Anyone compared Schwable Almotions to Supremes?

2018-11-05 Thread John Phillips
Thanks Doug, The supremes sound really good.

Checking the Schwalbe site again, I see for 2019, Schwalbe will be
offering lighter clincher versions of the Marathon Almotion in 50-622 &
55-622 sizes once again, along with the heavier tubeless versions in the
same sizes.

So maybe I should order Supremes for now and wait to see what people say
about the new non-tubeless Almotions? More to think about...

Thanks Chris, I'll add the Maxxis Torch to list of possible choices as
well, with a note about the cornering.

Thank you everyone for all your recommendations.

I ordered a set of the Marathon Supremes and a set of the new clincher,
non-tubeless Marathon Almotions from Germany for about $43 a tire with
shipping. I carry an extra tube & tire on grocery runs, so if I get a
puncture, I can just pop on a tube & tire and fix the puncture after I get
the groceries in the fridge.

Fingers crossed, I won't be fixing flats for awhile!

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Anyone compared Schwable Almotions to Supremes?

2018-11-06 Thread John Phillips
Hi Bob,
I meant the V-Guard tires vs the MicroSkin TL-Easy tires.

Maybe I was wrong, maybe the V-Guard tires are tubeless compatible.
You're right, the general description of the Almotion says:

"Now all sizes of Marathon Almotion are equipped for tubeless operation.
The patented Microskin construction tires are also significantly lighter.
the tire is for tubeless compatible."

But the V-Guard tires are a new listing on this page, and since the V-Guard
50-622 tires are listed as 135 grams lighter, and not listed as TL-Easy, I
assumed they were the updated version of the Almotion clincher Schwalbe
used to list as simply "Dynamic Casing" and that Schwalbe was in the
process of updating this web page.

On the Marathon Supreme web page, the text says, "Maximum comfort and speed
are achieved in its Tubeless Easy version..." And the non-TL Easy" Supremes
have V-Guard.

On this page TL-Easy compared to V-Guard and other flat protection:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/BENCHMARK-OF-PUNCTURE-PROTECTION

I guess I will have to just see what's what when the tires get here.

[RBW] Re: Anyone compared Schwable Almotions to Supremes?

2018-11-06 Thread John Phillips
Hi Bob,
Amen! I can never understand why Schwalbe doesn't try for greater
clarity on their webpages.

I found I could search for answers on the Schwalbe website by using
Google. For instance, if I searched Google for "What is Schwalbe v-guard?"
and clicked on the result linked to a Schwalbe webpage. Using the Schwalbe
website's search function or tables of pages got me nowhere.

I should dig my pair of Mondials out of the closet and ride them until the
new tires arrive just so I'm not mentally comparing the ride to the current
55mm Compass tires.

Thanks,
John

[RBW] Re: U locks and Pitlocks

2018-06-07 Thread John Phillips
I live in Berkeley in the SF bay area where bike theft is common. As
someone mentioned above, with the right cutting wheel, a portable angle
grinder can cut the heaviest u-locks with two cuts in less than 2 minutes,
so where you lock up is important. I like to sleep with my Hunqapillar
under my pillow to make sure no one tries to run off with it in the middle
of the night. ;-)

My go to u-locks for when I can't keep my eyes on my bike are the Abus
U-Lock GRANIT XPlus 540's. They're about 6 lbs each. Their locking
mechanisms are supposed to be more resistant to rust and jamming. I also
have a couple of Kryptonite Mini Fahgettabouditu-locks, they're 4.44 lbs
each, and if you go with one of these read the care & feeding instructions
online. Kryptonite recommends lubing the lock once a month with a
teflon-based chain lube to keep it from rusting & jamming.

If I can keep an eye on my bike, I use the Tigr mini locks w/ or w/o an
Abus u-lock.

The tamper resistant allen bolts or Pitlock Pitstoppers are a nice way
to prevent thieves from stealing racks, seat posts, saddles, and handlebar
stems and pedals.

I haven't had the best luck with Pitlocks, because the plates of the
Pitlocks were smaller in diameter than the plates of my quick releases, and
weren't able to hold my wheels on as securely as the quick releases. Maybe
something with my dropouts? I don't know. They work well for others.

I would stay away from any lock that can easily be cut with a pair of bolt
cutters. Just my 2 cents...

Have a fun trip!

2018-06-20 Thread John Phillips
Dear Grant, Thank you for your Blahg post.

Isn't this same fear & hatred of Others what is behind car driver road rage
against bicyclists?

My wife is a proud Rivendell Betty Foy owner, and a Mexican-American, born
here in the U.S. to parents born here in the U.S. to grandparents born here
in the U.S. If you go back two or three generations earlier, her ancestors
were born Mexican. As they say, "We didn't move, the border did!"

Trump pardoned Sheriff Appaio for his crimes of arresting and incarcerating
Mexican-American U.S. citizens without cause. Now Trump is separating
children from parents as a tool of terror.

I am a proud Rivendell Hunqapillar owner, descended from Jews who moved
here from Germany to make money in the gold & silver rushes of the 19th
century. They missed the Holocaust, but were terrorized by the huge KKK
rallies and marches of the 1910's & 1920's, and have denied their ancestry
ever since.

This administration has expressed views against civil rights, immigrants,
non-caucasian citizens, women & mixed-race marriages. As Rivendell owners,
we feel distinctly in the cross-hairs of the agenda of this administration.

If one doesn't want to speak up for human decency, compassion & human
rights, one should remember the French revolution and the examples of
authoritarian regimes of the 20th century: innocent or guilty they may come
for anyone next.

Again, thank you Grant for your gracious words,

[RBW] Re: Torque spec for quil stem questions

2018-01-14 Thread John Phillips
I'm the kind of idiot who can over tighten a quill's stem bolt so much that
I broke it. I was using a new Park torque wrench which failed to stop at
the specified limit. I drove my Hunqapillar over to Riv HQ and asked Mark
to look over my head tube to see if I had caused any damage to my frame.

I was lucky, Mark said my frame was ok, and he put in a new quill stem
bolt. And he kindly and patiently reminded this idiot that while you need
to tighten the bolt holding the bars enough to stop all movement, but you
want the quill stem to be able to move laterally if you crash, to limit
damage to your bike and its components. This should be enough to keep the
stem from slipping down into the head tube. And he reminded me you don't
need a torque wrench to do this.

serious vitamin D deficiency which once corrected, corrected several health
issues.

Just a thought...maybe there's something going on which affects your
immune system.

Hoping you find a solution,

Hi,

Has anyone been trying out the Sinewave Beacon with an external battery?
I'm curious to hear how the set up has worked out for you.

Thanx!

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-22 Thread John Phillips
Grant wrote,

roads and trails no more than 15 minutes by bike away. It's not DP-Rocky

beat. More important, we ride them. I admittedly don't have the challenges
of fitting bikes into elevators or navigating 3-floor walkups, and I'm
sympathetic to those who do, but that's what Bromptons are for."

So...the Atlantis is changing from a touring bike to a Mt. Diablo
trail/fire road model for East Bay, non-multi-modal commuting, ranch home
owners? To me this is clear as mud, and it seems like a very small
demographic to be aiming at.

I forgot to add that I always check and grease new pedals before they go
on a bike. I rarely find brand new pedals have enough grease inside.

For good, cheap pedals, I like the OneUp composite pedals for around
$49.00.

[RBW] Re: Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-05 Thread John Phillips
I have been thinking much the same things you all have been saying.

I know I was surprised when Rivendell changed so much of their line to
the longer wheel base. This seemed like a huge risk for a financially
challenged business, when offering only one longer wheel base model would
have seemed a safer option. I remember Rivendell asking for financial help
while I was waiting for my Hunqapillar frame to be built. I helped out
then, and have since, but it wasn't very confidence inspiring while waiting
8 months for my first Riv to arrive. The longer wheel base frames are cool
if you keep your bike in the garage, never need to negotiate narrow
hallways, nor stairs, nor light rail & trains, or use bike racks on cars,
but would not be practical for me. But I need to do all those things, and a
bike longer than my 2013 54cm Hunqapillar just would not be practical. And
I think for a growing number of consumers, the new longer bikes are also
too long to be practical.

I understand the changes. I've ridden one of the appaloosa prototypes
back in 2013. It was cool, but the Hunqapillar already had a very stable
touring geometry, that's why I bought one, and I still love its ride. In
fact, if I ever lost it to an accident or theft (knock on wood), I would
seriously consider paying custom bike prices to duplicate it. For me, that
bike is absolutely bloody perfect.

Leah, if you find you love your older Riv's more than the new ones, just
follow your heart.

Hi Patrick,
I'm sorry, I meant *how* do you like to carry your 30 lbs of groceries
when you're riding your Quickbeam? Do you distribute the weight? Load it on
a rack, in panniers, in a backpack, or? Just curious about how you end up
handling that much weight on your Quickbeam?
