[RBW] ISO 26.8 setback seatpost (in silver please)

2024-10-16 Thread Jeffrey Zelevansky
I am looking for a 2-bolt setback seatpost for my new-to-me Hillborne. It's
26.8 and I'd strongly prefer silver. I can pay or I have some items I can
offer in trade, possibly a few bags or some other parts. Thank you.

[RBW] Erie Canal Trail on a Rivendell

2024-09-30 Thread Jeffrey Zelevansky
Hello group,

I'm new here so hope this is ok as a first post. I am wondering if any
members have done the Erie Canal ride (Buffalo to Albany or vv) on a
Rivendell and which model they used, any other tips etc. I am in the midst
of trying to retrofit my current bike, an old Surly CC, for such a journey,
maybe early next summer, but I'm just not sure if I'm heading in the right
direction. I'm not sure if I'll be credit card touring or camping...prbly
the formerand hoping to do 60-80 miles a day.

Thank you,

Jeff

[RBW] Re: Erie Canal Trail on a Rivendell

2024-10-01 Thread Jeffrey Zelevansky
Thanks so much for these replies! I drive the thruway all summer and have
taken an interest in the canal over the years. I have ridden little parts
here and there but really want to do the whole thing already. This book
 is
a very interesting account of what it took to build the canal, politically
and from an engineering standpoint. Anyway, I hesitate to derail the bike
talk with canal talk, but maybe that's ok.

I know I *could* ride it on almost any bike, but

[RBW] Converting my Sam H to drops

2024-10-25 Thread Jeffrey Zelevansky
Would anyone out there be willing to share photos of their drop bar
Hillborne or similar so that I can see cable routing? I think it'll prbly
be self-explanatory once I get going, but it would be a big help to me to
have a visual aid before I start. I'm using an older set of Shimano bar
ends and a set of Tektro brake levers. I'd also really like to see closeup
images of how to wrap the bars around a set of bar ends with the shift
cable emerging.

I have done this project before on a different bike but it was some time
ago and I seem to recall some trial and error which I'd like to avoid!

Thanks for any help!

[RBW] Indoor Rides

2025-01-31 Thread Jeffrey Zelevansky
Does anyone use their Riv on a 'smart' trainer?

In my quest to streamline my existence by seeing if I can get by with a
single bike (N-1? dunno.), I have installed my Hillborne on a Wahoo KICKR
wheel-off trainer. I stipulate that riding outdoors is infinitely
preferable but also refuse to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Other than protecting Sam from sweat, is there anything else I should be
concerned about in doing this? Even on the trainer, the Riv is much more
comfortable than the older Cannondale I have been using (it's a fit issue).
Thanks for any insights.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Rider Recipes

2025-02-04 Thread Jeffrey Zelevansky
This is an awesome thread.

I do most of the cooking in our house and believe that just by avoiding
restaurants and takeout (mostly), we are healthier. I have read and been
persuaded, usually further in a direction I was already heading, by several
books. I liked *How Not To DIe *by Michael Greger quite a bit. Another that
made a lot of sense to me was *Wheatbelly, *by William Davis. I'm not sure
if these books are hype, but I feel they did have some good information
that I keep in mind.

Looking forward to this PDF, thanks for the effort!

So I have a couple of recipes that have become our favorites. Both are
air-fryer but I suspect could be baked in the oven but might take longer.
Our air fryer was a present and my assumption at the time was that it
 would
either be a dust collector occupying valuable counter space or a ‘regift’.

Boy was I wrong about that. We love our air fryer and use it almost
daily. So these two recipes came from the little recipe book that came
 with
our air fryer. We liked it some much we had it reproduced and gave it as
 Christmas presents one year.

 *Roasted Garlic & Herb Chicken*

 Prep time: 35 min
 Cook time: 20min

4 Chicken thighs which we get from Costco bone in with skin. They are
super cheap since everyone seems to be either obsessed with wings or
 wanting boneless/skinless/tasteless parts.
Sprinkle to taste with Garlic Powder, Salt, Pepper and Herb de
 Provence.

Comments: The original recipe called for olive oil which I eliminated
due to the amount of skin included and the spices seem to cling well to
 the
 un-oiled meat.

 *Carolina Style Pork Chops*

 Prep time: 5min
 Cook time: 10min

 2 bone-in pork chops
Coat in mustard. I use dijon but yellow french’s works.
Sprinkle to taste with smoked paprika, salt, pepper and powdered garlic.
I make my own smoked pepper powder which I liberally apply, YMMV

Allow that chops to rest for 5mins.

 Bon appetite

The chicken thighs are great cycling ‘snacks’ or lunch, since once
cooked they can be kept for quite a while without refrigeration.

These recipes seem so simple to me now that I am writing them out, but
one of the huge benefits of the diet we are now on is how liberating it is
in it’s simplicity yet allowing us to better appreciate the taste of the
 meat itself.

I make my own electrolyte powder too but don’t have the specific recipe
readily at hand, and can write another post on that at a later date if
 anyone is interested. I’ve tried

Other than protecting Sam from sweat, is there anything else I should

 Thanks for any insights.

Re: [RBW] Re: NYC 5 Boro Ride May 4, 2025

2025-01-05 Thread Jeffrey Zelevansky
I did the ride many years ago on my 1985 Cannondale ST500 and it was a lot
of fun. I lived in NJ at the time and it was easy for me to get to SI for
the start. I think I left somewhere towards the back of the first wave. The
only un-fun part was the congestion in Manhattan meant an awful lot of
trackstanding, and attempted trackstanding. I have heard that it's paced
out better nowadays and hopefully your experience will bear that out!
Riding over the bridges on the roadways was the most fun and memorable part.
