According the the interwebs the use of bicycles by the Amish vary according
to Geography. They are not permitted in Lancaster County but are permitted

*"The PA Amish church placed a taboo on the bicycle in order to keep youth
close to home. However, non-motorized scooters are viewed as a compromise
between walking and the bicycle, and many youth ride them to school."*

Re: [RBW] Re: Hetres are done. The search continues.

2014-01-08 Thread Iron Rider
In my opinion, the sidewall was not cut. It appears to have delaminated.
The fibers are layered in cross hatch pattern and the layers separated
allowing the blowout to occur. There was no brake contact with the side
wall and no sign of any abrasion or cutting of the sidewall. The blowout
was not preceded by any unusual impact and (in hindsight) the delamination
occurred over several miles. (Speaking of which, the incident taught me
that if a tire starts to develop a once a rotation thump. Stop immediately
and find the cause.)

On a related point, one concern with riding a 650 B tire is that it is not
a standard size and is therefore hard if not impossible to replace on the
road. If this were a 26" or 700C any bike shop or sporting good store could
provide a (temporary) replacement but with 650B that is not an option.
Since this occurred I swiched to SOMA B (with Kevlar) and carry a tire
patch. No tire is slower than a tire with a blown sidewall.

Another rider gave me one of those and it worked initially. I added the
duct tape when I saw slight bulge develop and did not want to risk another
blowout because I did not have another boot and I have over one hundred
miles left to ride.

I now carry a couple just in case.

[RBW] Re: Hetres are done. The search continues.

2014-01-09 Thread Iron Rider
Yes and yes. It is feasible and I do now carry a spare folding tire (SOMA
B) which I hope is for a problem that is too rare to worry about. I
justify carrying the "extra weight" by switiching both tire and tube when
there is a flat which save a good several minutes and allows me to repair
the flat and check for the item that caused it after the ride is done. If I
have to change a flat in the dark, cold or rain or all of the above,
swapping out everything and dealing with it later is the way to go.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hetres are done. The search continues.

2014-01-09 Thread Iron Rider
The fix was actually a multi-layered set up. Between the tube and the tire
I used a Park Took tire patch. However, after an hour or so it began to
bulge a bit so I wrapped the whole shebang in duct tape and unnattached the
rim brake. The duct tape really seemed to keep the bulge from growing and
I rode a century on the MacGyvered repair.

[RBW] Re: Losing Bike weight vs. Rider weight. Which one more effectively makes you go faster?

2014-05-12 Thread Iron Rider
I think that reduced body weight makes much more of a difference even lb
for lb. Even with no change in strength, reduced body weight increases
strength to weight ratio. Lighter body weight increases VO2Max, i.e.
results in increased performance. Reduced body weight also requires less
calories per mile to move (except on downhills). Reduced body weight is not
just about the strength to carry the load, it's about the efficiency of the
engine. The limitation on this is the ability to maintain strength/fitness
at a lower weight.

The weight of the bike on the other hand, really just primarily affects
climbing and acceleration. At a given fixed speed, a 30+ pound bike on a
flat course can be just as "fast" as a much lighter bike, In fact, if the
30 point bike is more aero, it can be much faster! Case in point - I know
a guy who rides a velomobile, it weighs a lot (40lbs?) and is slow as
molasses up hill, but on flats and downhills he is as fast as even faster
than pro cyclists on a diamond frame bike.

Think of it this way, who do you think would be faster a pro cyclist on a
touring bike or an overweight cyclist on a pro bike?

Re: [RBW] I took my Homer to the Shawangunk Mountains for a day. (A ride report)

2014-06-11 Thread Iron Rider
Yes. I think you can ride your own ride even when riding someone else's
pace. As Deacon, suggested, if you're comfortable with pushing the pace (or
slowing it down) to ride with others then that is "your ride" for that
event. In my experience, riding "slow" to stay with someone when you'd
much rather ride fast can be as frustrating as riding "fast" when you'd
rather slow down even though either pace could work under different
circumstances. In that sense it's more about having your mind
(expectations?) and pace in sync.

Jim Bronson is correct. We were following a set route and can't deviate and
still get "credit." Also, I frankly didn't know about the waterfront trail
(until after) since we rely on the route designer to set the course. The
riders have been giving feedback in the hopes of avoiding this happening
again. I hear the Niagara escarpment is a nice alternative . . .

Trevor,

I didn't mean to paint all Torontonians with the same brush. There were
some who were safe drivers (thank goodness) However, the ratio of bad to
good and the extremeness of the "bad" driving definitely left an overall
negative impression and a sense that the bad driving was not an aberration.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. As for the question as to which Riv
bike makes the best brevet bike. I think that will change with the rider. A
rando friend does all his brevets on an Atlantis. I have the A.H.H. and
I've seen others. I think the bigger issue is the fit. After 200K Fit and
comfort become HUGE factors that only grow in significance as the distance
grows.

[RBW] EBDJ

2015-10-18 Thread Iron Rider
I'm in the third week of a month long "test" of the low carb high fat eating
plan (consistent with "Eat Bacon Don't Jog.")
Some observations: I have consistent high quality level of energy - no more
more big fluctuations based on meals.

Soreness and achiness are greatly reduced even though I am getting regular,
quality exercise (weight training, track intervals, an 8:30 200K ride last
weekend and an 8:15 hilly 150K this weekend).
My mood is upbeat - not weirdly happy- just contentedly mellow/ more relaxed.
It is possible to do long rides on less than 30 grams of carbs without bonking.
Oh yeah - I also dropped 13lbs and it all seems to have come from the
midsection.

True story. No BS. And no exaggeration.

I ride an A. Homer Hilsen and I weight 240 - 250+ depending on the season.
I use 38 mm 650B tires and I love my bike.

Funny you should say that. I literally used that phrase several times
during the ride!

Re: [RBW] A ride report of a 300K brevet ridden on an A. Homer Hilsen

2015-04-27 Thread Iron Rider
This was my first time below 15. (I some credit to the March 30 Day cycling
challenge - Now with four ways to win!) But it was also a pretty flat
route for a brevet so I don't know how representative the time would be for
a typical course with lots of climbing. That being said, I do plan to use
this approach for hillier routes as well. So I will find out . . .

Nice! Was it a steady grade over the 10 miles or a series of stair step
climbs?
