[RBW] Exchange: Drop bars for albastache

2020-05-02 Thread Friend
Would anyone be interested in exchanging Nitto drop bars for Nitto
Albastache. I send the Albastache and receive the drops. I could either
sent my whole cockpit (nitto stem, silver shifters, basic brake levers) for
your cockpit (depending) or just swap bars for bars. I'm in VA. Lemme
know.

James

[RBW] Shifter cable exit

2020-06-24 Thread Friend
I am about to finish my new drop-bar cockpit with bar-end shifters. Almost
every drop bar I see has the cables for the bar-end shifters departing from
the bars a few inches away from the shifters on the bottom part of the bar.
I brought the housing all the way up to the middle of the bars where both
the brake and shifter cables exit together and go to their respective
places. Before I wrapp and shellack, I want to make sure that I'm not
missing some obvious inconvenience that this may cause down the road. Do
ya'll have preferences on this matter?

2020-06-25 Thread Friend
Good point. Also, as I'm discovering with frustration, shifter cables
don't come long enough to reach the rear derailleur on 63cm frames.

[RBW] Pass and Stow recommendation

2021-04-19 Thread Friend
I am feeling ready to spend on a nice front rack for my Appaloosa. I was
going to get the Pass and Stow and and am wondering if anyone has
experience with either the 3 rail or the 5 rail option. I was leaning
towards the 5 rail option because it would better support a basket. I'm
wondering if anyone found unexpected tradeoffs when they bought one or the
other and just trying to get some peace of mind before spending $280

If ya'll were to pack up your bike, travel with it to Italy, and do a bike
tour trip there, would you take a double-top-tube Appaloosa or a Homer

 @Patrick,

It's the curse of the gangly-large frames--there just aren't that many
riders out there that can fit a 63cm frame. Basic supply & demand, right?
It does have one key blemish--the pointy lug that points up the seatpost
was bent in transport (boxed so they removed the seatpost). it couldn't be
bent back and accept a seatpost, so cut, filed, and touch-up paint. Never
 bothered me.

Ok, the buildI had some different parts on it for the last couple
years, but am making it more Rivish for sale using many of the parts that
came on it when I acquired it.

- Velocity A23 with 28mm Gatorskins
- VO Grand Cru Brakes (SO much better than Tektros)
- 105 FD, RD and Crankset
- 9-Speed cassette (11-30)
- Shimano barends
- Nitto Dynamic Seatpost with a Brooks B17
- 44cm Noodle Handlebars, IRD levers, 9cm Nitto Tallux stem
- VO Platform Pedals

 I think that's it.

And yes, they are expensive. I'll pour myself a nice, expensive glass
of scotch the day they get off my auto insurance policy.

[RBW] Re: How Many Bars on the Appaloosa?

2022-02-21 Thread Friend
I used to ride with the Albatross but the bends in the bars were
uncomfortable when I wanted to put my hands in a more forwards position. I
switched to Bosco bars and love them but I am ridiculously upright. I can
lean forwards and rest my elbows on by bar grips, with my hands in the
center of the bar. I can hardly stand and pedal though, as my hands will
basically be at my hips. I'l like to switch and am considering the
choco-moose based off this thread.

I'm 6'2" with a 92cm PBH and I ride a 62cm Appaloosa with 45mm tires. With
my butt on the saddle I can get my tippy toes of one foot to touch the
ground. Stand over is right at my groin bone. I would ride it any smaller

Ever since I moved the kiddos over to my Cargo Clem I've had a hard
time finding a job for my Apploosa. It's a wonderful bike but I simply do
not need an All-Rounder while I have other bikes better suited to each
 type
of riding I do. Two years of beausage. No dents or dings other than some
mild depressions on the chainstays from the super-duper kickstand I used
 to
use. There are some moderate scrapes near the crank and inside the drive
side chainstay (loose chain incident). Other small scrapes here and there.
The attached pictures should show it all.

Please PM me with any questions. Thanks!

[RBW] Switching Appaloosa from 700 to 650b

2020-01-05 Thread Friend
Hey Friends,
I ride a 62cm Appaloosa and love it. When I ride it the size seems
perfect. When I straddle it the top tube is *right* in my groin. It makes
me hesitant when riding it off road. I have thought of switching it to
650b rims to gain an extra 2.5 cm but I'm not sure it's worth it. Other
option is trying to trade for a 58cm which I have never ridden. Has anyone
been in a similar predicament? 2.5cm seems insubstantial to make the
switch to 650b.

Re: [RBW] Re: Speed wobble

2020-03-27 Thread Friend
This is happening on the Homer. It has a large saddle bag but when I was
riding yesterday, with maybe 5 or 7 pounds on the rear rack, it still had
wobble going about 12mph. I did buy it used but it's the factory fork. I
think it may also have something to do with the handlebars. They are
albastache on a dirt drop stem so they are pretty high off the steering
column.

Happy to hear offers. I'm not going to use them so any price above what

Other ideas. Buy ball bearings that barely fit inside allen wrench
key-holes and smear them in there with bees wax. You have to melt the wax
to get them out.
Lock your bike between other bikes and lock the wheels and frame (I keep a
hefty u-lock at my most frequented bike rack, then travel with another when
I go elsewhere)

[RBW] Single speeds

2019-01-19 Thread Friend
Rivendell Friends,
I have rarely ever experienced a single speed bike. I can count the number
of times one one hand I have ridden one. I know have the opportunity to
build up a AHH and am considering a single speed, or a 1x9(or 10,11,12).
Then reading Rivs email today I saw Will rides a 2x1.

*What do you like about riding a 1x(X) or a single speed?*

*What are pros and cons of different gear configurations?*

[RBW] Pitlock Skewer assistance

2019-02-25 Thread Friend
Hi friends,
I recently got a Pitlock skewer set and after I installed it I noticed some
play/wiggle in my rear rim. When I try to tighten the skewer further the
bald/coned end just turns with it. I can't seem to get the skewer tight
enough but it seems to be the same length and my previous quick release
skewer. Any tips, thoughts, or experience that might help are welcome.

Yes, it's moving in the dropout. With the normal qr skewers it tightens
just fine. The bike and wheels are brand new from Riv.

[RBW] Re: Pitlock Skewer assistance

2019-02-25 Thread Friend
the front pitlock is fine. When I tighten the rear one with the key,
wrench, & greased threads, the coned end just spins. It never gets tight
enough to prevent movement in the dropout. I tried to get a hold of the
coned end with pliers but still can't get it tight enough. It's on a new
Joe Appaloosa.

According to the geometry chart, it would fit a 62cm Appaloosa. Maybe a

you can see the exact rack on riv's website.

and still trying to unload my new, in box, 700c schwalbe g one speeds

the rack has a couple custom made, bolt on doohickeys that made it fit

[RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2019-04-12 Thread Friend
Thank you Lambbo! Indeed that's the plan. Working with the components I
have, it will have drop bars, no fenders, and likely no racks. Light and
nimble. I'll put the Caradice QR on the seat post that's currently on the
Joe and have some slick 35mm tires on it. The reason I haven't built it up
yet is because I am still sitting on my Trek 520 and having 3 built bikes
is too much room for me right now. Pondering what to do with the Trek.
It's on the local CL, but no bites in a while. And it's also handy for
riding to places where it will be locked up outside for a long time.
Provides peace of mind not caring too much about it!!

Re: [RBW] WTT: Nitto bars for Nitto Bars

2019-04-14 Thread Friend
Yep. I'm at a loss also, but the bars have been shipped. A trade
happened! Thanks for the help.

[RBW] Re: Big Bottle and Cage Recommendations

2019-04-16 Thread Friend
I have Blackburns make of this. I can attest that the dangling straps are
not ideal and typing them up when you aren't carrying a bottle is a hassle.
However, I can strap in things that aren't a nalgene such as a rolled up
jacket, small dry bag, etc. When the Nalgene is in it, it doesn't budge.

On the Nitto front rack can you take the pannier hangers off and run it
with just the taller wheel cover portion?

Re: [RBW] What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-24 Thread Friend
The Portland problem is so real, and the Spring Water Corridor can be super
sketchy. I almost got jumped there once. My brother and I parked our
bikes by the MODA Center for a few hours one evening. We knew it was
sketchy. We brought every lock we had and had our wheels, frames, seats,
all secure to eacht others bike and to the rack. We come back to find my
brother grips were stolen...

The biggest suggestion I have for bike security is, unfortunately, don't
lock up your rivendel on the sidewalk. That's why I am keeping my 1999
spray painted Trek 520. One more thing. Put ball bearings in all your
allen wrench bolts. Smear them in there with wax. They are hard to get
out without melting the wax.
