Re: [RBW] Re: Question about rear brake cable housing routing with low friction on a Clem

2024-04-02 Thread Allan McLane
Kim,

The photo shows how Riv arranged the cable housing guide braze-on on this
bike, a Rosco Platypus. The entire housing slides through the braze-on and
the end of the housing slips into the entrance of the noodle. It isn’t
really necessary but I also slipped a short length of clear tubing around
the outside of noodle about midway along, just to hold it off the seat tube
paint.

Here’s one source for that part:

[RBW] Snake-in-a-bike

2024-05-08 Thread Allan McLane
Here's a tale from the “Well, I never thought I’d see that” department…

This afternoon I was out on the Yvez Gomez, exercising the dog, when we
encountered a smooth green snake (Opheodrys vernalis), sunning itself in
the middle of the road. I stopped next to the snake to maneuver it to the
side but it decided to climb up my back wheel spokes and inspect the
interior of the cassette instead. After several failed attempts to nudge it
along, it exited the cassette, went forward along the chainstay, and
completely entered the fender, going up.

To extract it from the inside of the fender I slowly rolled the bike
backwards until the snake popped out the rear and onto the ground. At this
point it had gotten the message well and slithered off into the stone wall.

For the curious, full photo documentation here:

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Platy!

2022-07-18 Thread Allan McLane
I called and asked about that forward-facing seat clamp because I have a
NOS set of Dia Compe NGC 982 cantis that I have been saving aside for a
mermaid Platypus build for my wife. We both got tired of waiting for the
next Platy shipment and, per a conversation with Grant, the Rosco Platy has
nearly identical geometry so we getting a green 50 cm frame instead.

Anyway, Will told me that the seat clamp lug was designed for the tandem
frames and that they had been worried about too much heat weakening the
seat tube in that area during fabrication. Turns out that the seat stays
ended up being welded lower down and further away from the lug so they
decided to use up those clamp lugs somewhere else.

My plan is to put a collar around the seatpost (29.8mm) and anchor a Nitto
long cable hanger from there. It’ll be a minor inconvenience to adjust the
collar whenever the seat height needs changing but it’s not a frequent or
big deal to me.

The collar:

Looking forward to getting this frame!
