Re: [RBW] Re: Tics in the bars at the stem clamp - help

2024-10-15 Thread Joe Bernard
We're bordering here on losing track of the information provided. The very
tall stem slammed into the butted section of the headtube is a one-off
temporary swap onto Leah's Raspberry Platy, she was not previously running
stems dropped that low on any of her bikes. Not the cause of the tic-ing.

[RBW] Re: 126 mm JIS taper SKF bb assembly for 68 mm English bottom bracket; or equally good substitute

2024-10-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Nick and Garth. In fact, I learned that RH hopes to restock the SKF
in 126 within a month or so, so I will hold out for that period.

Question: The SKF bb has cups with integral shoulders. I take it that this
means that if you want to offset the spindle a couple of mm to the right (I
think that the SKF is symmetrical) I will need 2 mm of spacers on the drive
side?

Re: [RBW] Question for Nitto 33R (Big Back Rack, Large) havers

2024-10-15 Thread Bob
The 32R would not leave me enough room for a fender, or rather, I think the
fender would fit but would require some means of attachment to the rack to
avoid rattling against it. Neither the 33R nor the 32R has such a
downward-facing boss, and even if they did I wouldn't care for the whole
drilling and attaching process.

[RBW] Re: 126 mm JIS taper SKF bb assembly for 68 mm English bottom bracket; or equally good substitute

2024-10-15 Thread Garth
FWIW, The only cartridge BB I has fail was a Tange LN-3922, made in Japan.
So much for origins .. Meanwhile the Shimano UN series just keeps on
spinning and I can't say how many miles. But for the $15 I paid for them,
that buys many of them in contrast to a high falootin' bottom bracket,
which guarantee you nothing in durability terms. Phil bearings on their
BB's can be user replaced though can't they ? Despite what they may claim.
Also, where the bearings or races really corrupt, or did they simply need
some cleaning and grease, popping off the seals yourself ?

Any bearing assembly is a crap shoot. I'm still running the orignal bearing
on a Specialized cartridge bearing hub from the mid 80's. I cleaned
repacked it once. It's a superior design to purely exposed cartridges as it
also has a metal shield over the bearings. But I know, we're talking BB's
here.

In summary, my premise is the inexpensive Shimano BB's get terrific mileage
for the price. This was with the UN54/55/70 series, I can't speak to he
newer 300 series. No, one doesn'gt always get what one pays for ans
everyone knows it. One "payz what theyz pays, so to speak, no guaranteez".

I am going to build up a Romulus and looking for a crankset for it. 170mm,
silver. Sugino XD2 would be fine, or something sleeker/lighter would be
great too. Anyone have something? I'd like 50/34 or lower gearing

Re: [RBW] Question for Nitto 33R (Big Back Rack, Large) havers

2024-10-15 Thread Feliks Ulvåen Isaksen
I tried the medium big bag rack on my 60 cm Sam Hillborne. It cleared the
wheels, but not by a lot. I tried mounting them with fenders on and that
was a no go. I suspect it might be fine depending on the frame geo and
size, but if you have a 60cm Sam, I would avoid it.

 of
the rack? (By "hook" here I mean the single hook on a bungee or similar
elastic cord that prevents the pannier from bouncing up and off the rack
rails. Swift panniers have them, as do Arkel; Ortlieb and Carradice have a
 different lower attachment.)

I'm pretty sure older versions of the rack had a loop at the bottom
where one could secure the pannier's hook, and the current 32R (Big Back
Rack, Medium) still has such a loop.

 Thank you.

 20241012_130322.jpg]

First off, I want to tell you that my camera, a Canon PowerShot SX710
HS did not pick up very well all the fall colors as I had anticipated,
unfortunately. The few pictures I took from my cellphone were a lot better
 color wise.

I left my house at 8:15 am yesterday. When I got to the small town of
Rainier, I realized that I forgot my shoes that I ride with. Therefore, I
had to turn around and go back home and get them. This set me back in my
travel to Pe Ell in meeting the slower group of cyclists at 10:00 am. Oh
 well.

Upon arriving at the Pe Ell trailhead, I met once again a man by the
name of Steve, who I had sold some bicycle parts from the IBOB Google
Group. He said that he was watching out for me to arrive here. He was late
to the party as well living far away from the WHT. He was all smiles and
happy to ride his bike with me.

We rode together for quite a while, perhaps three miles or so. Then he
departed and went ahead to Frances. I slowed him down frequently with
intermittently stopping and taking pictures of the scenery, for I had not
been there before. He started at Adna, 23 miles east of where we were. He
was on a time schedule per say, of which I understood.

Those tree tunnels along the WHT and Chehalis river were amazing ! I
 loved them.

After Steve left, I kept riding west. After a while, I started to feel
tired. I stopped three or four times to rest. Occasionally, cyclists
 riding
back from Frances would pass me going east. I took pictures of their
approach. The last group I saw, Chris Brewer, the trail host and promoter
passed me and said, "Beautiful day !". I replied, "Amen!"

I was somewhat sad that I did not make it to Pluvius. (The highest
point between Chehalis and South Bend at the crest of a divide southeast
 of
South Bend in east central Pacific County is called Pluvius. W. C. Albee,
when superintendent of South Bend branch of Northern Pacific Railway,
devised the name because of the heavy rainfall in the region. The name is
an alteration of the Latin word Pluviosus which has the significance of
heavy rains or precipitation. The writers of the Railroad List noted that
the name was given “…due to the fact that it rained incessantly during the
construction of the line.”) It was best to listen to my body than not to
 turn around.

I do not know specifically how many miles I rode yesterday. I am
guessing about 10 miles out and back. ... 20 miles total ? There were no
crossroads to take notice of to remember where I turned around. I do know
this I could tell physically that pushed myself to my physical limit when
 I
got home. My legs were physically sore and walked like an old duck bent
over trying to straighten up. All in all, I had a good ride.

Oh !... Those SimWorks Homage 27.5x55mm (actually they measure 50mm)
new tires I bought; they came the day before I the WHT ride. I am very
happy that they did. They worked very well and were very comfortable to
ride on; quite plush. There were areas of gravel that were thick. I love
these tires. I wish I had a second pair of wheels to change out when
needed, maybe in the near future.

I will be back next spring to pick up where I left off riding west.

 Kim Hetzel.

Good recap. I would RAISE the stem 20mm to 30mm to ensure it is NOT
contacting the butted section of the steerer tube. Your ticing seem to
occur with 'slammed' stems and the stem wedge in the butted section may be
the cause of the ticing
