RH is out and so are the other vendors I checked.

Does anyone know a source?

Again, SKF, 126 mm, JIS.

If anyone has one to sell, I’m very interested.

If I can’t find one I’ll probably ask Phil to mail me a 126 mm spindle but
I do want an SKF. At least 1 Phil out of a score has gone bad too quickly,
and I don’t get more than 15K miles out of my other Phils, so I would
prefer to try an SKF.

“Nother question: Is there another bb bearing assembly in 126 mm JIS that
is anywhere near as good as SKFs are reputed to be? — Someone recently
reported putting 20K miles on an SKF without any problems and it’s still
going strong. That’s what I want.

126 JIS = perfect; 127 mm works; 125 mm might work if laterally adjustable.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Cycling caps: useful or merely decorative?

2024-10-13 Thread Patrick Moore
When I wore long hair I could never get caps to stay on my head — lost a
good bright yellow Campy cap in a strong wind, and I had to resort to
under-chin elastic. Also, I never needed hats in winter to keep my scalp
warm, tho’ I did wear various head coverings to keep my ears and face warm.

But when I started wearing my hair very short — quite a different story.
Caps actually stay on securely — this surprised me when I made the change —
and yes, my scalp gets cold.

[RBW] WTB: 700c Single Speed Wheelset

2024-10-13 Thread David B
I want to get a second wheelset for my Redwood to experiment with 700c vs
650b (currently set up). It’s been a bit since I’ve needed wheels and I’d
normally build my own but would rather find something ready to swap in. If
you have a wheelset to sell let me know. Alternatively if you have a
recommendation for a source, that’d be great too. The Riv Roaduno set are a
possibility but not exactly what I’m looking for.
Ideally…
130mm rear spacing (or the ability to easily respace to 130mm)
Silver
36h
Quick release - or front qr (some Formula/similar hubs have hollow axles)
Velocity Atlas or similar width (no wider than that)

Thanks!
David

[RBW] Re: NBD for my daughter

2024-10-13 Thread iamkeith
Congratulations! I hope she loves it.

Regarding the headbadge, I'm pretty sure Rivendell HQ will sell you one.
You may even have a choice between bronze or pewter color, since they made
both and picked colors at random. At that time, they came loose in the
box, and the owner was supposed to install them themselves. IF they wanted.
Or they could monogram it or leave it off to hide the pedigree of the bike
as a sort of theft deterrent. Original owner probably lost, forgot or
decided they wanted to use it elsewhere.

More useless Clem trivia: The first batch was not supposed to have creme
highlights on the fork wings OR any lug windows OR even have decals
installed, either. They were supposed to come with a pack of alphanumeric
characters that the buyer could use to personalize the name. The "Clem
Smith Jr,: if it was even going to be installed at all, was supposed to be
on top of the clear coat. It didn't happen as planned. I think Riv just
gave up after that miscommunication, and went along with the normal,
permanent decal application for future runs. If the fork wings aren't
painted, this might be a 2nd run, as Leah noted.

Given the bike's design intent, it wouldn't be inapropriate to let your

bottlecap or toy or?. Gently hamner it into a curve and stick it on with
heavy-duty, two-sided foam tape...

[RBW] Re: NBD for my daughter

2024-10-13 Thread Josh C
Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I knew it was an earlier run. The bike was
sold in May 2017 by a Riv dealer here in Indianapolis, which is no longer
in business in the state. Hazel is 13 years old but living downtown she
gets around pretty much all over by herself or with a friend; most often on
a bike. She has already ridden it to the block party last night, a
friend's house several times, the grocery store (for sleepover trash pizza
and snacks), and back and forth numerous times to fulfill her dog
sitting/walking obligations that he enrolled in for the weekend. She rides
to school most days and all over the city with friends. Next year her
school commute will be about 3 miles round trip, and I'm sure her Clem will
soak up most of those miles.

As you have probably noticed, the head badges are attached with

I hope you do get a new head badge soon.

[RBW] Re: FS: 50cm Orange Protovelo Charlie Gallop

2024-10-13 Thread Pancake
Such a GREAT bike, the swoop is classy but the canti studs that allow
v-brakes are the major advantage of this prototype. I have the 55cm and
can’t say enough great things about it. I had flared drop bars and those
were excellent with mini-v-brakes (80mm arms) but it really shines with
sweptback bars and v-brakes. 50mm tires and upside down albatross bars with
inner bar ends for a in the hoods position, it’s phenomenal. I commute,
weekend around rides on pavement and dirt for 20-40 miles, and did a very
rainy Wine country Century on it this summer. A little flexy compared to a
Cheviot, but also faster and as smooth a ride. Better than a Homer for
roads, as competent as a Platypus in the dirt. Mine came as a triple but
it’s a better fit for a double (;6-30) and 10 speed rear (11-40t). Love
this bike, anyone this fits would be crazy not to get it. Though I’ll
quibble and say mine also came with a Charlie head badge which is just
awesome

Re: [RBW] Bar tape/wrapping advice?

2024-10-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Your taping job looks pretty good to me.

What are you trying to accomplish, exactly that your present tape doesn’t
do? More cushion? Nicer color? Longer life? More grip?

I know what I like and what I don’t care about and on the 1/1,000,000
chance that it’s helpful to you, I’ll talk:

Comfort is more important to me than looks, let alone history, so I choose
tape that cushions well.

Next criterion is durability: I prefer tape that lasts for — now that I
think of it, I’ve never measured bar tape life. Let’s say that I like tape
that approaches 1K miles of use, half of it bare hands since I use gloves
only in cold weather.

I do like some colors better than others, but color is less important than
the first 2 criteria; I’ll use black comfortable and durable over pretty
hard and ephemeral.

Cost is in last place, tho’ I did buy a bunch of VO tape really cheap on
sale, hoping it meets criteria 1 and 2.

That said, my favorite of all time is the thinner Lizard Skins: supremely
comfortable. The Bad: doesn’t last long and it’s $50 or so a bar, so it
goes only on my “favorite bike of all time” while the lesser ones make do
with cheaper options.

I’m ready to retape the 2020 Matthews IGH clone of the 2003 Curt Riv Road
Custom with $6 VO tape and I’ll learn if this was a good purchase. The
“foamy” $20 stuff on the bar now does not cushion very well tho’ it has
lasted well, and it has been un-and re-wrapped too many times already so
that a retape is in order.

Aside: The only tape less comfortable for bare hands than cotton tape over
bare metal is that cheap vinyl stuff from the 1970s; yes, I had bars taped
with that stuff. Nice and slick when your hands sweated.
