Re: [RBW] Orthos

My orthos slipped a lot. What I finally did was mount them in a 31.8 four
bolt stem with a shim. Now they don’t move at all. Maybe worth a try. Bill

Re: [RBW] Orthos

2024-09-14 Thread David Ross
I’ve had good results with the Park anti slip gel, using a 26mm stem on my
90s mtb and also on another ATB I have that’s running a 31.8 with a shim.
That’s good for general riding. However, if you’re going to ride really
technical stuff and apply a lot of leverage to the bar ends, they’re going
to slip in my experience. I have another set of Doom copies of an Albatross
on my Gus with a 22.2 bmx stem and they do not slip, even when riding
technical stuff. Another thing I’ve learned to do is to hold the area in
front of the levers if I’m going to apply a lot of leverage to the bars.

[RBW] Re: Converting a T1000 into an Atlantis

2024-09-14 Thread Ryan
Agreed. Very classy! May have mentioned before that I've owned 3
Cannondales; an M500 from mid 1980s with the 24" rear wheel. a 1990 M2000
and a late 1980s T600
which was a fine touring bike that was also fun to ride unloaded.

Re: [RBW] Orthos

2024-09-14 Thread David Ross
I’d also add that the guy who designed the Orthos uses a 25.4 single bolt
stem on the Orthos even though they are 26mm. I think he actually designed
them to work this way. Personally, I don’t know enough about engineering or
metallurgy to know if this is a good or bad idea, so please don’t think I’m
advising you to do this.

AFAIK Rivendell isn't even offering customs any more...unless someone
closer to Walnut Creek knows differently. Customs aren't on the site

[RBW] Brake levers that clear Silver 2 thumbies

2024-09-14 Thread Kevin
Hi all,

I'm currently using the upside down Shimano method but I'm about to move
those levers to another bike. Who can help me find some silvery long pull
levers with a clamp that doesn't interfere with the shifters?

I know the Pauls do but I'd love a cheaper option if it's out there.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: CX 50/70 brakes?

wrote:

Thoughts? Love them or hate them? I had them on my Atlantis. Took them
off. Couldn't get the straddle cable set up. Suggestions on setup? Thanks

Best canti's ever, though TRP Revos were close. The key features are 1)
road bike shoes, and 2) varying spacers that make them work with any (in
the relevant range) stud spacing and rim width. Also, the ability to
release the springs so easily is a big help.

As noted, you can use them with any straddle cable and hanger, but I have
had no trouble setting them up with their standard hardware. First be sure
you have the right spacers/washers so the pads are contacting the rims with
the shoe-mount arms perpendicular to the ground. Then run the cable
through the round thingie down the plastic tube to the arm with the cable
clamp. You should just be able to fit the "quick release" end of the hanger
into the other brake arm recess, and the plastic tube should cover the
cable all the way to the brake arm. After getting the cable adjusted right
(and not before!) bend the cable out over the little arm at the back of the
round thingie and into the slot between the arm and the round thingie.
(Sorry, that's the best description I can come up with.)

Pad setup is incredibly easy. Release the spring on the side you're
adjusting, so the spring on the other side pulls the pad you're adjusting
to the rim. Loosen the bolt, move the shoe to where you want it, put a
credit card between the trailing end of the pad and the rim, and tighten
the bolt. Replace the spring.

I have them on a 1983 Santana Tandem (first time I've ever had confident
braking on that bike), three Sam Hillbornes, and a Heron Touring. I highly
recommend replacing the stock CX50 shoes with replaceable cartridge shoes
and some good pads. The pads on CX50s are shockingly bad in the wet.

[RBW] Rivendell children's bike

2024-09-14 Thread Patrick Moore
I was glad to see a new Blahg:
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/grant-petersens-blog/augus-blahg

There otta be a law that Grant has to produce these at least twice monthly
-- it's my second-favorite bicycling screed after Bike Snob.

I would have bought a child's bike, even at $900, particularly at the 2010
dollar equivalent, for my daughter if Rivendell had made them when she was
a child.

With very sloping top tube, a stem with long quill, and reachback bar you
could probably get 6 years growth of of the bike, say age 6 to 12. Before
that, kiddie bikes, after that, multigeared bikes or move on to the iPhone.

After 3 kiddie 3- and 2-wheelers I bought my daughter an Electra Townie 3i*
with coaster brake and 3 speed Shimano hub for her 10th birthday; she loved
it and the even-slacker-than-Rivendell feet-forward geometry let me at 5'
10 " ride it comfortably after raising the saddle. That was a well designed
bike -- well designed for its market.

* That "i." One is gobsmacked (lovely word) by the absolute lack of honest
in marketing. This monicker was obviously meant (this was 2011) to pull
buyers' emotions to feelings of
"internet/digital/modern/advanced/praiseworthy" and get them slavering to
hand over $$. But it was a well designed and well built bike for the demo
and price point.

Does anyone know *who* is trying to legally ban coaster brakes, and what
their alternative is that they hope to sell in the place of coaster brakes?

[RBW] Re: CX 50/70 brakes?

2024-09-14 Thread RichS
Ted explained the setup perfectly. I ran CX-70s on a previously owned Riv
and currently have CX-50s on a Mercian. The finish was nicer on the 70s but
the gray finish on the 50s was not a deal breaker. As Ted noted, the three
spacers of varying lengths that come with the brakes are a big plus. The
straddle cable Shimano provides works fine; and yes, lose the stock pads.

[RBW] September Diablo Summit on the RoadUno

2024-09-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
I did my ninth Diablo Summit of 2024 today, once every month and now on
nine different bikes. This time I rode my new RoadUno, obviously with
14-speeds. It was my first summit of the year on flat pedals and casual
shoes. My seat tube mounted rear shifter worked a charm. The bike
descends extremely well, and I enjoyed the variety of positions on the
Choco bars. I got some funny looks from the East Bay Roadies, but received
an enthusiastic greeting from a Riv Road rider, and from a guy on a
Brompton.

Pics Prove It:

So now the "Uno" on my RoadUno signifies it being the first of its model to
the top of Mount Diablo.
