Re: [RBW] Re: Horses and Donkeys

2024-07-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
I think of burro as a small donkey, and I think of both of them being
smarter, and more cautious than horses. They are definitely cute. Burros
in particular can pull off a hat/bandanna ensemble that would knock your
socks off. IMO

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith Jr L Baba Fiets

2024-07-23 Thread Michael Baquerizo
Nice! If you don't have any experience with rear yepps, i'd spring for the
frame mounted one. now that they've upgraded to the slimmer metal bars on
the maxi, it makes the whole interface a lot less intrusive. i had a rack
mounted one and it meant whenever i wasn't with my kid i had this ugly
thing on my rear rack.

yours looks a lot more spritely than mine, although once its moving i feel
like it can really go.

[RBW] Nine is fine! 1x9 drivetrains in 2024. Who else is doing it?

2024-07-23 Thread Michael Morrissey
I think it was Bike Snob NYC who said that a lot of the fun of riding a
Rivendell is combining components that aren't meant to go together and
seeing if they work. On my Rivendell I have a 1x9 drivetrain. I use a SRAM
GX 10 speed clutch derailleur, Silver 1 shifter on a thumbie, a narrow-wide
Wolftooth chainring, a 9 speed Connex chain, and a 34 toothed 9 speed
cassette. It all works great.

I was wondering what other 1x9 drivetrains people here are using, and if
anyone has experience with any new 1x9 systems. Microshift, Shimano CUES,
and Box components are all new options within the last few years. I'm also
considering a SRAM GX Eagle crankset on my bike. Has anyone tried this with
a 1x9?

I am also interested in any high-end 9 speed cassettes (like SRAM's PG990,
with an aluminum spider). Anyone holding a NOS one? SRAM has 10 speed
cassettes that are very high end still available, and I might switch to one
of those because of availability.

Thoughts?

Michael

If you like nine, Box has entire drivetrains on sale for about $70:

Re: [RBW] Nine is fine! 1x9 drivetrains in 2024. Who else is doing it?

2024-07-23 Thread DavidP
My Platypus is 2x7, but my more off-roadish, 650x48 all-road bike* is setup
1x9 with:
- Wolftooth 42t front ring
- Microshift Advent 11-42t cassette
- KMC X9 chain
- Inexpensive Shimano-ish (but not Shimano) non-clutched 9 speed derailleur
on a short hanger extension
- Friction Sunrace bar end shifter (though my understanding is this setup
would index fine as Advent derailleur pull requires matched shifters but
the cassette spacing is Shimano/SRAM)

It works very well.

-Dave

*To borrow a designation from Bill and distinguish it from my more roadish
all-road bike (700x42, 2x9) and my drop bar, mostly off-road bike
(29x.2.25, 1x8)

[RBW] FS: 58 Rambouillet Frame/Fork/HS

2024-07-23 Thread Michael Ullmer
It's time to part ways with my Ram. It's been a great frame capable of lots
of different build options, but overlaps too much with my Fitz Rando.

It was sold to me as a 60, but the top tube measures 57, so it leads me to
believe its a 58. Here's a link to the original catalog with geo chart at
the
end:
https://notfine.com/rivreader/Brochures/Rivendell%20Frames%20Rambouillet.pdf

Frame is in great shape, one small dent on the top tube presumably from the
handlebar/shifter hitting it. I've tried to capture most of the paint
scratches. This made a great 650bx42 conversion with fenders. I used Tektro
R559 brakes to reach the lower rim brake surface. As a 700c build, I was
able to do 32s with fenders.

Comes with an Ultegra Headset installed and cable stops.

I'll include an original Rambouillet catalog as well.

Pics here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/kVPXz1K3bdXdt4ax9

$750 plus shipping via ups ground.

Thanks!

[RBW] Paul Touring cantilever performance versus Paul Neo Retro

2024-07-23 Thread Patrick Moore
I started out with Neo Retros front and rear, found that the rears
intefered with panniers, and switched to Touring in the rear.

I can't really say that the front is more powerful than the rear; both have
very stiff housing hangers -- rear is brazed on, front is Rene Herse.

Others who have used both: can you say whether it's worth keeping the Neo
Retros in front?

Tho' I do hear that this f/r combo is not uncommon.

[RBW] Re: Paul Touring cantilever performance versus Paul Neo Retro

2024-07-23 Thread J G
I run Paul Canti brakes on a number of bikes.

The touring brake model should be more powerful than the Neo-Retro when you
account for both the angle of the arms and the yoke angle. As such, the
greater mechanical advantage of the Neo-Retro arm is offset by the lower
mechanical advantage of the yoke angle of these setups IIRC.

As such, I use Paul touring brakes F/R for rim brake 29ers and generally
run the Neo-Retro F and Touring rear for all other bikes. Both brakes
perform well when setup properly with good compressionless housing.

No wrong answers and I started with the touring ones in back many years ago
for the same reason as you.

My sister said, I always think you’re riding a donkey. You have a donkey.
Everyone is riding a horse and Leah brought a donkey! Donkeys are so powerful
and you can saddle them with an incredible amount of weight. When you charge up
hills, pull liters and liters of water out of your bag AND a change of clothes
you know everyone with a horse is looking at you like you’re a loon. They are
carrying one little bottle to keep their horses light and you’ve packed down
your donkey. Everyone underestimates the donkey. I’m going to change your name

There was one other donkey on the ride. I’ll send pics of both in the next post.

Who else loves their donkey?!
