[RBW] Re: Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-20 Thread Joe Bernard
I support the Class 1 pedalecs with 20mph top speed on centuries. A century
isn't really a group ride, I've done many by myself and was passing small
groups and being passed by other small groups all day so, an ebike going by
me wouldn't seem unusual. Of course range is the limiter here, most ebikes
would be relegated to the 40 mile or shorter route unless the rider was
very good about shutting off power during the event.

[RBW] Re: Upright / Relaxed / Swept-Back - Style of Riding

2024-07-20 Thread Jay
Update: I'm swapping the bars on my Salsa Fargo. Going with the VO
Granola. I can use them with stems I have on hand, just had to add brake
levers, grips and a Sram Apex flat bar shifter. Need hew cables/housing
anyway, so all-in-all the experiment won't break the bank. I'll report
back in a couple of weeks after it's built up and, hopefully, dialled in.

Very little chance I'll switch the bars on my Roadini. I'm really happy
with that set up and feel like I will *not* be making any changes to it for
a long time (which is a delight, for someone who's always making changes to
dial in fit).

[RBW] Re: Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-20 Thread 'aeroperf' via RBW Owners Bunch
Which brings up other good points about E-bikes.

We’re in the “Look out, Martha! He’ll run down the kids and scare the
horses” phase of E-bikes now, like the safety bike was in 1895.

There are currently three “classes” of E-bike in the US, and at least 4 in
the EU.
And that’s aside from people like me who build and program their own.
Honest, officer, it’s a Class 1 (unless I throw this little switch next to
the thumb shifter).
And because we have a lot more government now than in 1895, every state has
the opportunity to apply their own regulations.

Meanwhile the lycra louts with their carbon road bikes are blowing by me at
25 mph without so much as an “On your left”.
Do we let them on STP? BRAG? But limit E-bikes to 20 mph?

So all that has to be worked out for any sanctioned ride, along with who
regulates and who enforces.
This is a good time to have this discussion. The e-fun is just beginning.

2024-07-20 Thread 'peech1...@yahoo.com' via RBW Owners Bunch
I agree with George Schick on this one since I see increasing numbers of e
bikes on the trails generally ridden by people who wouldn't be out there,
riding much faster than I can ride, coming up fast behind me without any
sort of announcement and startling me. I don't like e bikes for that
reason but see the appeal. I actually wish every e bike c
could be licensed and the riders required to take some basic education re
trail etiquette and safety.

RE: [RBW] Re: Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-20 Thread Bernard Duhon
One huge difference is a “lycra lout” as you , called them, going 25 mph may
have bad manners but he has been riding a while and probably a pretty good bike
handler.

However a newbie going even 15 miles an hour his electric bike is a danger to
everyone on the road. Including himself. When we were starting out on a human
powered bike we were mostly a danger to yourself. (and took a while before you
were cruising at 12 miles an hour)

We have been a lifetime of acquiring Cycling skills. I have taught the
effective cycling course in the past and even seasoned cyclist benefit from
these type of courses.

You cannot get a driver's license without passing a drivers test and almost
everyone has taken a driver's Ed course.

Some point in the power/speed scale education courses should be

And 20 mph on ebike is too fast for an unskilled novice and that is the speed
limit on a lot of trails.

That having been said, there are a lot of bicycles you shouldn't put a novice
cyclist on. I know several people who started out riding on a tri, time trial
and crisp handling race bike and injured themselves. They had no business
starting off on a bike like that and shame on the bike industry for putting
them on that kind of bike.

Which brings up other good points about E-bikes.

We’re in the “Look out, Martha! He’ll run down the kids and scare the horses”
phase of E-bikes now, like the safety bike was in 1895.

There are currently three “classes” of E-bike in the US, and at least 4 in the
EU.
And that’s aside from people like me who build and program their own. Honest,
officer, it’s a Class 1 (unless I throw this little switch next to the thumb
shifter).
And because we have a lot more government now than in 1895, every state has the
opportunity to apply their own regulations.

Meanwhile the lycra louts with their carbon road bikes are blowing by me at 25
mph without so much as an “On your left”.
Do we let them on STP? BRAG? But limit E-bikes to 20 mph?

So all that has to be worked out for any sanctioned ride, along with who
regulates and who enforces.
This is a good time to have this discussion. The e-fun is just beginning.

Albastache acquired, thank you for the replies.

Also thank you for the responses regarding the frame. As luck (good/bad?)
would have it, a few days after this post I received an email from
Rivendell that there was a 54 Hillborne in stock, and I immediately jumped
on it. Not the smartest of financial moves, but it's the frame I wanted in
the first place. I'm sure there's some some N+1 equation to account for too
many frames but not enough parts to build either? Anyone want to trade a
beater Canti Rom frame for some wheels? Joking, not joking.

Regardless, I am really excited to get acquainted with the Hillborne when
it evolves to completion.

I may have made a hasty purchase and ended up with a bum frame. But I'm
going to try to make the best of it.

So...I parted ways with my 26" Atlantis a while back in hopes to find a
55-56ish 700c Hillborne (short stay) to replace it. I watched Riv, and the
used market for literally years, and just kept missing them. I fell short
of a wanted ad, as I didnt really NEED one and figured it would pop up one
day. Well, I sort of gave up and stopped checking. However, as age, and
circumstances will do, I am now creeping closer to the need of a more
upright and comfortable bike. I check in here and BOOM...a new run of
 short
stay Hillbornes!! AND they're sold out in my size. Ugh.

Deflated, I go back to trolling the used market, and my first search
brings up a 55 Canti Rom...20 minutes from me. THIS would do nicely and
 was
a previous target of obsessive searching. The seller informs me there's a
brake lever ding on the TT and dent on the seat stay. Not deterred, we
 plan
to meet. 75yo gentleman who clearly has ridden some bikes, and seems to be
a DIY mechanic. Bike looks good, albeit with an odd build. Not Rivvy, but
more hodgepodge of commuter/2000 road bike. Rode fine, set up was not
comfortable for me but the frame fit, the dents were unfortunate but not
apparently damaging. We strike a deal, and I bring it home.

 The lay of the land:
Threadless adaptor with super upright stem and Noodle bars which I do
 not like
Thorn proof tubes and 28c rock hard commuter tires
BIG gel saddle on a layback post
 Canti rear, side pull front

All of this meant, I needed some time to strip it all down, acquire
some parts, and rebuild to my preference. No worries...until I got to it a
 few weeks later.

After stripping it mostly down, I started to clean the frame and
noticed a bizarre, what I thought was a scratch, in the paint on the top
tube just at the end of the head tube lug point. Looking closer, its more
like the paint is crackled or scrunched. My gut sank. I immediately
 checked
under the DT for a bulge or other signs of front impact. Nothing. Seems
totally fine. But the TT really looks odd. I've worked in shops for 30
years and have seen many cracks, dents etc...generally there's apparent
trauma you can trace to other areas, but this is a new one to me being
isolated. The other oddity that may be normal on these...is that the TT
feels like it's externally butted to fit the HT lug. Nothing massive, but
just a slightly perceptible increase in OD right about the point of the
lug. Imagination? By design? Bulged from impact? No idea.

All that said, I am bummed, but absolutely hold no ill will towards the
seller. I truly believe he had no idea and was completely up front with
 the
damage he knew about. AND it could just be a scratch or other paint
anomaly. Yes, I could have the paint stripped back and find someone
knowledgeable to inspect it, but I feel like the optio

2024-07-20 Thread Jacob Kersey
Thanks for the insight Armand & Reginald!

I'm realizing based on the responses that my query (and poor attempt at
whimsy) read like an indictment of U-brakes, which wasn't my intention. I
was mostly curious about the different brake placement on two seemingly
identical frames, which Armand helpfully clarified was due to the frames
being from two different model years (as the subject line suggested, if
only I'd been able to make the simple inference...)

For context, I still own an old u-braked Ritchey Outback, and rode an '87
MB2 with suntour rollercams for years. In my experience both provide
stopping power aplenty and aren't any fussier to set up than most cantis.
Chainstay placement isn't optimal for riding conditions involving any sort
of mud/debris, but for the vast majority of trails and city riding,
u-brakes work great (and make rear rack installation much simpler!).

Reginald, do you happen to have any photos of the roller cam setup on your
MB-1? And apologies to Armand for all this thread drift on your FS post!

I can see a path to going 12 for 12, including the forthcoming RoadUno

the 58 is "right there" but riding it is so perfecto, that I've just got to
go big.

Re: [RBW] Re: Electric Bikes and Organized Rides

2024-07-20 Thread Patrick Moore
A local bike industry representative recently proposed a bill to the City
of ABQ Council for blanket legal permission for all types of e-bikes along
with a 20 mph speed limit, the limit to be moral and legal, not
technological. My first reaction was, "Yeah, sure, and you will enforce
this exactly how?" Me, I think that there should be official obstacles for
use on recreational trails and bike lanes any motorized vehicle capable of
more than 20 mph without pedaling but I don't know what those should be or
how to impose them.

Riding briskly along a bike path a couple of months ago I was passed at
probably 25 mph (I was going at least 15 and was passed at a large speed
difference) by a kid on a OneWheel or somesuch with no warning or vehicle
sound besides very muted tire buzz; it was a good thing I wasn't trying to
turn left. I have no problem with e-assist, but neophytes going faster than
their bike path traffic skills (let along road skils) warrant does worry me.

The same thing happened a few months earlier yet: a kid on an e-bike passed
me on a bike path at a good differential without sound or warning, his
little terrier running unleashed behind him. (It was a fast terrier.) (The
kid would let the dog catch up, accelerate so that the dog would chase him,
the stop and repeat. All on the left side of the path.

Worst yet: 18 or 24 months ago maintaining a stout 18 or so on my Riv
gofast on a pave bike path I was passed with no warning and very little
noise by a kid on an electric motorcycle who passed me, I swear, and I
don't think my imagination is fooling me, going at least 40 if not more; he
whizzed by and disappeared up the trail and around a distant corner before
I could collect my wits to yell an insult. But thank God that was a 1X
even, so far at least.

OTOH, by far most of the now quite numerous e-bikes I see on area bike
paths are putting along harmlessly at 12 or 15 mph and even an old duffer
like me can pass them handily.

[RBW] Re: broken shift cable with silver shifter

2024-07-20 Thread Max S
Just out of curiosity, did you have it set up as a bar-end or a
thumb-shifter or a downtube shifter?

Reason I ask: A few months ago I set up a bike with the Silver v.2 shifter
on a Paul Thumbie mount and noticed that the cable would rub on the side of
the cable hole as it entered the pod. I also noticed the same thing when
setting it up as a bar-end shifter on a bar-end pod from Riv. I figured
that after a few hundred miles either the hole would get sawed out, or the
cable would snap, or both...

It's possible that the bar-end and thumbie pods had been originally spec'ed
for a smaller diameter shifter body, but either way, I decided not to risk
it, relegating it for future downtube duty, and replaced it with a
different bar-mounted shifter on that bike.
