The chain holder is a brilliant idea! (I will have to try it on mine.)
A meticulous build -- I like all the set screws protecting threads.

That’s a really cool bag, Nick. Thanks for sharing. Most handlebar bags

Thanks to unintentional prodding from Leah, I've pressed my new-to-me
Romulus into service. Some serindipitous objects in my parts inventory
enabled a build concept that is functionally similar to the forthcoming
RoadUNO. It's got a single 18T freewheel, a Paul Melvin tensioner (from
Joe B), a triple crank with 46/36/24 rings and a single DT shifter for the
front derailleur. This morning I "upgraded" the front derailleur to a
Campy Mirage, which qualifies this bike for my "Every Bike should have one
 Campy Part" club:

 https://flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/albums/72157719595208740/

The other upgrade from this morning is I swapped out the front wheel to
a quick release front hub, rather than the bolt-on Phil track hub. I will
likely rebuild that Phil front wheel with a dynamo hub. Now the F+R hubs
are both black. Also, I "downgraded" to much skinnier tires. This
accomplishes two things: It allows wheel removal without deflation -AND-
 it
generates ample clearance for fenders. The three gears are 35/53/68
 inches
 with these tires.

I'm becoming progressively more and more "SOLD" on the validity of 3x1
as a build concept. It works. I may end up doing my May 2024 monthly
 Diablo summit on the RoadTrio.

Even though I'm not buying a RoadUNO, I'm excited to see who else gives
3x1 a try with an open mind and concurs that it works for them.

I have a rear wheel built on the same rim that will take a 8/9/10 speed
cassette. I think I'm going to set that up with an 8sp 12-32. Then add a
single bar-con shifter and replace the tensioner with a rear derailleur

 it's a light touring bike.

For truly light loads the 3x1drivetrain will suffice, but with a 3x8
I'd be ready for anything (provided it's paved). The trick in the setup
will be to see how "quick change" I can make it. There are a couple
details in the set up that I believe could make it a ~5 minute switch.
We'll see how it shakes out. I

Thanks for the link to that documentation. I believe mine is a 54cm 2014

bridge model, I guess!

2024-05-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
Thank you. It's kind of a four decade anachronism. A 1980s build concept
and tire clearances. 1990s stem and 3x8 drivetrain. 2000s frame set.
2010s wheel set and handlebar. 2020s front rack and bag. Timeless 1950s
- 1960s metal fenders, retro-copy rear rack and saddle.

I'm going to pull out my ultra-minimalist camping stuff and do a mock-up of
how I might load it up for a potential summertime ride down the California
Coast.

One more significant step to a fully equipped "sport tourer" is now in
place on my RoadTrio. Soma recently had a tax-day 65% off sale on
 selected
items, and one of the items was skinny (41mm) Honjo smooth fenders. I'm
used to paying $200 for Honjo fenders. Soma had this model at $90 MSRP,
and so 65% off was $31.50, so it felt like stealing. Anyway, I finished
the full-fender install last night. The current tires on there are 27mm,
and I could go a tiny bit wider with 41mm fenders, but it'll be skinny
 tires all the time.

 Pics prove it:

The next move is a rear rack, which I have picked out, but will have to
 save up to order.

[RBW] wtb: 26.8 seatpost, 120-130mm quill stem

2024-05-16 Thread Brent Knepper
looks like I've a periwinkle build coming up in the near future, which I
should be able to get rollin with my small but intentional parts bin :) in
need of a seatpost and stem though!

26.8 seatpost needs:
-longer than 250mm
-15-20mm traditional setback is great, not looking for straight or waybakk
-weird/funky/vintage/esoteric always encouraged, I can get a $5 used kalloy
locally :)

120-30mm stem needs:
-120-130 length only, already have some shorter stems if I don't really
need a long-o
-usual 22.2 quill
-90º or 7-shape, not lookin for a riser stem
-150-250mm quill length is fine, don't need to get the bars high or slammed
-25.4 clamp or faceplate is good, or 26.0 but only with a faceplate is also
good (prolly using rons ortho bars for anyone curious)
-W.F.V.E. also welcomed here

thanks for your consideration!

Your approach to this build as a performance upright bicycle and your

Appaloosa. I have the same bars too, but slightly wider tyres! All I need
is some bar tape and to mount my shifters upside down like yours for those
secondary hand positions to really be dialled.
Hope you have many more adventures to come.

PS: I was told the Quills couldn't handle 48s (I have them on my
singlespeed). Are you running yours tubeless?

2024-05-16 Thread Guy LeVan
I absolutely adore my 2015 size 57 in Tiburon Blue. If you want to see the
Grant design influence, check out bikeinsights dot com comparison of this
model to a Bleriot in size 59. This 57cm was a new addition to the San
Marcos lineup, and is as close to a perfect geometry for my morph than most
bikes I’ve ridden. This is a bike that remains in my quiver.

Update on items.
The following are still available, shipping not included:
*Profile stainless stem*, 135mm reach, 26mm clamp, 1" quill. No bolt cap,
but I whittled a wine cork into a little plug and that worked great and you
can do that too: $20
*Velo Orange faceplate quill stem, black, 31.8mm mount, 100mm (maybe 90?)
length: *$70
*Schwalbe Thunder Burt tires*, 29x2.2", moderate use, one of them has side
knobs snipped to fit between narrow rear stays: $40/pair
*Terravail Cannonball tire*: 700x35, light use, tanwall and tubeless. $30.
*Salsa Woodchipper 2 handlebars*, very well-used, black, 46cm width: $20

These things have been sold:
*Lekker Leks Albacore

 handlebars*,
light patina: $100
*Paul thumbie mount (right)*: $30
*Velo Orange Grand Cru brake levers*, silver (one barrel adjuster is bent,
but works fine and threads in almost all the way): $40

Hey Jerry,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Toyo Atlantis 26inchers were
limited to 56cm frames and under. 58 and above were 700c.

[RBW] Love to Ride: Commuter Challenge

2024-05-16 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
My love for my new home state is well-documented. After 18 years of desert
living, we moved to Michigan, where none of us Petersons had set foot prior
to the job interview.

I have finally found a biking community, right here in a state that has
winter.

Anyway, I got asked to be on a committee that would help launch a new
initiative to get more people on bikes. There is a lot of lovely new
infrastructure in downtown, and we are hoping to get people to use it to
get to work/events/dining/shopping. We are using the app Love to Ride,
which will allow people in the city and surrounding areas to sign up, join
the challenge and compete against other people for a 2 week challenge in
May. The city is eager to have the data that the heat maps will generate,
showing where people are riding and where they are not. Hopefully this
influences further infrastructure in the near future.

Today there was a local news article, and one of the men I’m serving with
is pictured with his RIVENDELL. Paul’s brother John Sotherland built the
Rivendell frames at Waterford back in…whatever day that was. I almost never
saw other Rivs in the other places I’ve lived, but Michigan has plenty of
them.

Here’s the
article:
https://www.secondwavemedia.com/southwest-michigan/features/Kalamazoo-Commuter-Challenge-encourage-new-cyclists.051624.aspx

There were also a Waterford run of Atlantis. I recall seeing a 56cm MUSA
Atlantis for sale on this list. The MIT (made in Taiwan) models have the
long chainstays and fit differently.

The original 56cm 26" Atlantis is very cool, but hard to find. It might be
worth considering newer iterations of the Atlantis too.

Appreciate the insight regarding Toyo Atlantis frame to wheel sizing. At
6'1" a 58 would actually be ideal for me - I was just wanting a 26" wheeled
Riv for rides with the wife. Whelp - I'll keep searching for a 56/26" Toyo
Atlantis.
In the mean time - I do have a custom Ebisu/650B on order that I'm excited
over. Just received my hand built Velocity 650B Quill wheelset and White
Industries crankset/BB for it. I have other savory bits for it too.
Whelp - I do so love building bicycles, I love everything about it - and to
a fault.
