I think if somebody has a problem about you being cautious, they are not
somebody you should do business with.

[RBW] Re: Scam alert? I'm so confused. Blue Homer in LA? ND?

2024-05-03 Thread Roberta
My company is super cautious about Internet security, having us take lots
of security courses. One of the biggest email and internet securities red
flags is money or action in an urgent timeframe. This sounds scamming to me.

By the way, I have a 54.5 homer and the picture is certainly not of a 54.5
bike.

Kim, the link takes us directly to a blue lug page. How did you get
scammed?

BTW, I’ve gotten scammed too — with eBay. I will never not buy directly

Posting here amongst people I trust, admire, and have become friends with. My Roadini frame and dozens of parts on both my Rivs have been purchased from this group. I don't want to stir up any drama if this is in fact a legit sale, but the listing is from Jan 2023, 16 months old, this bike at any price under $2000 should be long gone on it's way to a new owner. PS. I'm not sending a deposit.

I concur. I sent this scammer Leah's way unknowingly. Stay away from this
person. In this case his "cousin" just bought a Homer and so was selling
his Roadini. He must troll this group for want to buy posts and pounces.
Karma is a concept of action, work, or deed, and its effect or
consequences. Here's hoping that a little karma is heading his way.

I’m glad this has been brought up to keep others from getting scammed.
If there are any others that need to be brought to the group’s attention,
please speak up. I feel it’s our responsibility and duty to protect the
group. Don’t be timid. See something, say something.

Re: [RBW] Re: Scam alert? I'm so confused. Blue Homer in LA? ND?

2024-05-03 Thread Eric Marth
Kim: I don't see how the administrator of this forum has any bearing on
someone's Facebook post. The scam is potentially occurring via Facebook,
not our forum. You reposted the FB listing here with a link.

Regarding the Blue Lug purchase, how on earth were you "scammed" by Blue
Lug? They are one of the best bike shops in the universe and I'm sure they
would correct any mistake or problem with your purchase. I dislike like the
implication that Blue Lug would scam anyone.

Regarding scams and buying/selling: If anything about the listing or your
interactions with a seller makes you uncomfortable or sets off *any* alarms
just drop the exchange and walk away. It's easy! If it's too good to be
true, it probably is. Although sometimes you have to know when to snag a
deal like when someone posts a Nitto S83 seatpost for $30. Sellers should
be happy and eager to share photos or details about frames or bikes for
sale.

Here on the forum it's easy to check someone's history simply by searching
their email address and reviewing their past posts to see if they
participate in discussions, buy and sell goods and you can get a sense of
how long they've been part of the community. All common sense stuff.

Also — Don't end up handing $50,000 in cash to a stranger on the street!

Re: [RBW] Re: Scam alert? I'm so confused. Blue Homer in LA? ND?

2024-05-03 Thread Robert Calton
Good morning all, I did talk to this seller and ended up buying a different
Homer frame from someone else. *It's most definitely not a 54.5cm frame*. I
got the sense that their "client" is not local to them and they wouldn't be
able to confirm any measurements, etc.

If they're now saying $1300 for the complete bike, it's 200% a scam. Be
safe out there.

Re: [RBW] Re: Scam alert? I'm so confused. Blue Homer in LA? ND?

2024-05-03 Thread Drew Fitchette
The "Jeff" in question reached out to me in response to a WTB post. I asked
what his "Friend" was selling and he said a 60cm Homer, which I thought was
strange considering my post specifically said 54/55/56cm.

A quick check to see that he'd never posted in the forum and I assumed it
was nefarious.

I also got looped in with a scammer through the FB group, probably the same
guy. (for me it was a wheelset)

Should we consider asking the admin of this google group to turn the group
private? I think the i-bob list did this recently and while it won't solve
all problems, it might help.

2024-05-03 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks everyone for watchin'!

Marty: The Match Game was before my time but I certainly came up with Bob
Barker. The $20 corded mic I bought just didn't seem right clipped to my
shirt so I went for the long mic.

Patrick: I appreciate the kind notes. Sorry about the SW gardening woes, I
know nothing of gardening in that clime. I've had my own troubles here! I
was in a different house about 10 years ago and the garden was a lot of
work but it was abundant and without many difficulties. The soil and sun
are different in this spot and growing has taken a lot of trial and error.
I'm finally getting the hang of things. A groundhog just showed up on the
scene, I saw them (unsure if it's a male or female) heartily eating some
lettuce while sitting in the raised bed earlier this week! It's fenced off
but they found a way in. I have to admit it was kind of cute, holding a
huge piece of lettuce, but it still left me cursing. I'm glad you like the
tools!

Re: [RBW] Re: Scam alert? I'm so confused. Blue Homer in LA? ND?

2024-05-03 Thread Kim H.
@Roberta and Eric -
Let me clarify how I was scammed. I posted here last July wanting to buy
Blue Lug's
*REW10 WORKS* hex brass valve caps here in the states to save myself some
monies in overseas shipping costs.

Anita Batya saw my post and claimed that she had a pair. Anita told me that
she lived in Seattle, of which is relatively close to me (This was a lie.
She lived in Pennsylvania after doing some online homework after the fact).
If I wanted them, she requested me to make a payment through a third party
email address of which she claimed it was her bookkeeper. Anita told me
that she was waiting for an answer from Paypal for a refund. I sent her
money (I forgot what amount it was $50.00~?) several times. This kept going
in circles over and over again. By then, I felt that there was something
mighty strange and peculiar going on. I caught on that I was being scammed.
I did not respond back to her. This was my first time being scammed over
something that I really wanted. My apologies for there might be some holes
left out from my recollection of my interaction with Anita.

Later down the road, there was other members herein and over on the IBOB
group being scammed by Anita. Skip Montanaro, the administrator accepted Anita
Batya's membership. When I told Skip that she was/is a scammer, he quickly
took action and denied her membership.

[RBW] Sonoma Wine Country Century tomorrow! Anyone else?

2024-05-03 Thread Pancake
The Charlie H Gallop prototype is heading out for 100 miles tomorrow in
Santa Rosa, basket and rain and all. Anyone else going to be on the ride
tomorrow?
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29272184
I’ve done this once before (my only prior Century) and it was wonderful …
but it didn’t include tomorrow’s predicted 1” of rain peaking just before
the ride begins.

Related to rain: I have a light rain resistant jacket, partial fenders
(MudX in front and Portland folding in back), and wool socks … any other
suggestions for how to keep a bit dry and to dry out while riding? There’s
a gear drop off point about 1/3rd of the way through which is when the rain
should be receding, so I can ditch some gear. I’m just curious how the bits
under my shorts will fair, I’m optimistic a bit of wind and time will dry
me out when possible. Definitely time to get out the Brooks seat cover too!

Finally, I’ve never really “carb loaded” beyond having rice or pasta before
a ride. But I bonked last weekend on a 50 mile ride (albeit without really
eating much of anything before). Anyone have a preferred liquid carb filled
drink so I don’t fill my body with just rice and corn flakes?

Hope everyone gets a great ride in this weekend!
Abe

[RBW] WTB/ Rear Rack Advice

2024-05-03 Thread Stephen Durfee
Looking for a rear rack for my trusty All Rounder, something that will
support panniers for some summer excursions...perhaps something like the
Shiny Rear Rack. Does anyone have an extra they would be looking to
offload? Or, suggestion for something more appropriate?

[RBW] Re: WTB/ Rear Rack Advice

2024-05-03 Thread NYCbikeguy
I have a tubus logo evo in black. the 2-tiered system allows for lower
center of gravity for panniers, as well as no overlap between the panniers
and whatever you load on top of the rack, and the lower tier is off-set
towards the rear so as to minimize heel contact. I can take pics later in
the evening if you send me a DM. I'm planning on selling for $70 +
shipping.

[RBW] Re: One way to try out a road bike for the Road Curious

2024-05-03 Thread NYCbikeguy
If any of you are in the NYC tri-state area, you are welcome to try out my
Rivs if you are in the 5'10 - 6'2 range.
I have the original Riv Road (comparable to the roadini/roadeo, I assume),
as well as the following:
56 All rounder
56 Toyo Atlantis
58 Waterford Atlantis
55 MIT Atlantis
58 Hunqapillar
Large Hubbuhubbuh

There's a great bike path near me on Yale campus, and I'm happy to let a
fellow Riv enthusiast try it out!

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Re: Scam alert? I'm so confused. Blue Homer in LA? ND?

2024-05-03 Thread Jay
I feel for those of you who have been scammed. Hopefully, karma plays out
for them, and perhaps you'll have a 'win' in the near future that makes up
for it.

I'm almost to the point of quoting any online used buy/sell activity.

I've bought/sold bike stuff, and a few other categories of items, on kijiji
for 10-15 years. Pre-covid, didn't do too bad. Most items would go in 1-2
weeks, a lot of views, responses were generally positive even if a sale
didn't occur. Most who did respond, got back to you even if they decided
to pass on the item. Likewise, I would message on things I was interested
in, and most sellers were respectful and good to deal with. During covid,
selling was a piece of cake. Now, sigh, about 90% of the interactions I've
had are with pinheads. People who in one minute seem so interested "I can
be there today between 3-4pm", and when you say you're working, how about
after dinner, you never here another word from them (this has happened with
8 out of the last 10 interactions). I've had items listed for months with
no activity. I may donate a bunch of things to a bike collective or
not-for-profit and hopefully the old parts (mainly saddles and stems) will
go to a good home. I'm a really positive person, but it's hard to be
positive with a lot the online activity these days (and these are not
scammers, just, pinheads!).

Buy/Sell looks great on this site. I'm in Canada though so that's a bit of
a challenge (though I do use cross border pick up site, and it works fine,
both directions), plus I'm at my budget for spending on bike things, for
now, and I have most of what I want.

[RBW] Re: Blue Lug Build Catalog

2024-05-03 Thread Jay
Before I purchased a Riv I spent some time on their site, and those builds;
really well done. I watched their videos, including those in Japanese, and
they're very enjoyable.

Re: [RBW] WTB/ Rear Rack Advice

2024-05-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Until I started getting customs made I always chose the Tubus Fly (it comes
in ss and titanium as well as in black powdercoat) because (1) it is rated
for 20 kg, (2) is it minimalist and very light (sub 15 grams, about the
weight of the chromo Matthews custom on the RBFD), and it fits frames
without chainstay braze ons (uses a bracket that bolts to the brake pivot
bolt or to a bolt through the b-p-b hole in the brake bridge).

I've carried many 40 lb loads and up to ~50 lb on many Fys on flexy 531 and
alum frames with no problems, tho' short shopping trips and not global
tours on bad dirt roads. For that I'd choose the Tubus Cargo Evo rack,
which I also once used, only for my purposes it was grossly overbuilt.
Rated to 26 kg but *tested* to 40 kg -- I'll let others parse the
difference. Or perhas the Cargo Classic? I think Tubus have down-rated
their racks by a few kg since I last bought one.

The Ultima Thule and Ne Plus Ultra and entirely Sic Itur Ad Astra rack of
all of them bar none at all is the Tubus Airy that is made of shiny
titanium, weighs 360 grams, and is mfr rated to 26 kg; I think the
*deustche* means, "tested to 30 kg."

   - 26 kg | 57.3 lbs (getestet mit 30 kg*)

$375 on everyone's favorite, vendor-squeezing, discount retail platform.

If my "road bike for errands" were 700C I'd be sorely tempted, but in fact
it uses 559 wheels and sports a stainless steel Fly shortened by a frame
builder.

Re: [RBW] Sonoma Wine Country Century tomorrow! Anyone else?

2024-05-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Please post photos, of bike and bikes, route, countryside, and vintages,
and describe all in excessive detail.

The nearby delightfully libertarian (as to HOA-type building standards*;
the libertarian social and political philosophy is false) "horsey suburb,"
Corrales, hosts an annual wine tour, tho' only for NM and not for the far
more numerous and I daresay worthy CA wines. I've been tempted, but the
thought of riding a fixed gear home south against a strong afternoon
headwind while pleasantly lethargic under the influence of many, many
samples has made me hesitate; not to mention the traffic. How does one deal
with this?

*$2M "estates" with ancient, crumbling, 600 sq foot adobes and singlewides,
locally top-rated restaurants and burrito shacks, rich Anglo incomers and
Hispano farmers resident since the 17th century, ancient acequia trails and
Loma Largo blvd where one winter circa 2010 I saw a Euro pro team training
in prep for the Tour at 5K feet in cool, sunny weather.

Re: [RBW] WTB/ Rear Rack Advice

2024-05-03 Thread Nick Payne
I recently bought my wife a Tailfin rack plus panniers and rack top bag as
a birthday present. Both the rack and panniers are very nicely made and
very stable in use, but decidedly not cheap. I bought her the aluminium
version of the rack, as I couldn't see the point in spending a wad of extra
cash on the CF version to save 150g when you then hang 15 or 20kg of
luggage on it. The rack can either mount to standard rack mounts or mounts
to a special QR or thru-axle they provide if the frame doesn't have mount
points or the mount points are already being used for mudguards. I bought
both the QR and thru-axle mounts, as she has bikes with both axle systems.
With the rack mounting to their axles, it's a matter of about a minute to
transfer the rack between bikes.
