Re: [RBW] 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-07-22 Thread Garth
I'd guess it's working out for Max since he hasn't posted an update, that's
usually how it goes when all is well !

I can't say bike fitting is mysterious, I'd call it intuitive. While others
can help steer you in the right direction, the fine tuning is all an
"inside job", so to speak. Just as no one can eat or breathe for another,
the Life that Lives In and As ALL isn't up for "negotiation". It MUST BE !

Since I've been re-familiarizing myself with riding in road position with
DT shifters and new saddle, I've moved mine forward some 15mm+ from when I
started with it. It just keeps feeling better, as in more
efficient/effective use of what strengths I have. Yesterday I unexpectedly
found myself riding up a knarly hill that has some really steep sections. I
had not ridden it in a long time and surely had my doubts as to doing it.
It took a while to get in the groove and took to standing on the initial
very steepest parts, but soon found myself seated and going up just fine in
the 36/32 high gear. I used to have to stand the whole way. I could feel
how much more effective it is to be able to use the quad/front muscles more
by sitting more forward. When I was too far back I'd have to either stand
or go to a lower granny gear and felt weak. My road bike doesn't have a
lower gear and thankfully so. I didn't need a lower gear to compensate for
my self-made mistake, I simply had to express my inherent strengths most
effectively and efficiently, upon which it often feels effortless. Rather
neat in that way ! I'm riding 150mm cranks and somewhat mid-foot pedaling,
all of which just works well for me.

2023-07-22 Thread danielle da cruz
Thanks to all for the kind and thoughtful responses!

@Jason I get what you're saying and had been thinking about the Albastache
for months. I do like the reach on it and the more assertive set up (why
does aggressive feel wrong to me in the context of me biking??). What
ultimately pulled me away was the brake set up. I put inverse levers on the
Porteur and liked having my hand at the levers for my mostly city riding
through traffic. Now you've got me thinking about the Albatross upside down
:)

@Jock I too hope he knows how lucky he is! At the time it happened I didn't
even mention it to him, knowing how much he'd beat himself up if he knew
what happened in a moment of carelessness. We had a riding date out to
dinner last night and I mentioned over a beer that I shared this story that
he of course didn't remember, having never been told. He asked me to show
him my post...I declined :p

@Johnny Truly appreciate hearing this from someone who's tried both! I'm
also really drawn to the beauty of that bar and am dreaming up elaborate
bar tape combos a la Grant and Blue Lug. I'm still thinking I might want to
shave off a bit the swept back length if it wouldn't compromise anything

@Kim Thank you, great advice and wise move, especially thinking of anytime
it's put on the rack to accompany us on vacation (looking at you @Leah and
your upcoming trip). Maybe it'll only be the Chev that rides the rack.
Maybe I'll just accept that inevitable chips and scratches that are sure to
come, like the scars we wear having lived. Or maybe I'll just gather all
our old cloth diapers and swaddle it for the ride...

[RBW] Re: Nice brake bits: Shovel Research

2023-07-22 Thread R. Alexis
Thank you for the info. This brake cable hanger looks nice! I have a Kona
one on my Rivendell Mountain from when I initially built it. Bought
several. This set up worked better than the Syncros Hang Doggie that I
initially planned to use on that build. The Softride suspension stem set up
would have made things a little tight. Thinking of doing this for an
upgrade.

[RBW] Re: Early 80's Specialized Sequoia

No, it was the stock parts that came with it. Fairly light wheels, Turbo
tires. I would make the same statement about Heron #1, the prototype, which
is a Road frame built with Touring stays at the rear. Both frames are a joy
to ride.

Interestingly, I read somewhere that the Sequoia was designed with a bit
heavier down tube and chain stays. Recently I posted on a frame building
forum a query about the ratio of stiffness among the frame tubes. If you
look at older Reynolds tube set specs, they have .1mm thicker down tubes
than top and seat. Or, if you like, their top and seat tube walls are .1mm
thinner than the down tube. All other tube manufacturers, and even Reynolds
now today, specify tube sets with equal wall thickness around the main
triangle. It's also important to note that the down tube and seat tube were
always 1/8" larger diameter than the top tube. Lately it seems steel
builders have been experimenting away from that, but I haven't seen any
discussion of why they would do that. For my Rivendell Road, for example,
Grant spec'd the exact same tube for both top and down tubes. So, that goes
the other direction, making the top tube exactly the same stiffness as the
down tube. BUT, because the top tube is shorter than the down tube, there
is less butted section remaining in the top tube. Anyway, my hypothesis is
that the relative stiffness among the tubes has an effect on how the frame
feels, and the a stiffer down tube and chain stays is what produced the
"magic" feel of a Reynolds frame. Perhaps backing up this hypothesis is the
"Spine" line of frames that Trek built, with steel or titanium down tubes
and chain stays, and carbon tubes elsewhere. Their marketing touted the
effect that had on the feel of the frame. A friend has the titanium one and
he loves it.

Sorry for the meandering detour. I just found the Specialized Sequoia frame
to feel heavy when lifting, compared to some other steel frames. But I
loved the way it rode.

Danielle,
Thanks for sharing your story. It's such a pleasure to read a well written
tale and I shuddered at the description of your pristine Cheviot losing the
battle with concrete. I'm looking forward to the images of diaper
swaddling!

Your story reminded me of some advice my older brother gave my younger
brother. Both of them avid outdoorsy hunters/fishers/campers/boaters, they
drive pick-ups for their adventures. Younger bro gets a brand new Ford and
doesn't want to drive a particular road because his new baby is going to
get scratched. Older bro says, "Find a track that is overgrown with brush
and drive your truck through it. It will get scratched up and you'll never
have to worry about it again." So much for precious truck finishes! (And
advice from older brothers...ha!)

Please keep posting and sharing your new bike decisions & adventures!

work? When working with friends that are new riders- they seem to want to

Josh - thanks for sending that photo of the Greenway trailhead. Clearly,
it's under the North D Street bridge that connects East Richmond with the
Northwest side (AKA "the 20th Century bridge) along the "canyons" of the
Whitewater River. Brings back a lot of memories. Makes me even more

Very Good Max !

I got the Soma email that showed the seatpost and noticed it looked
different, as it was. It's been redesigned with a new forged head and now
is 30mm setback rather than the 50mm.

Just so anyone ordering the post understand IRD doesn't make the previous
version anymore. Read the fine print !

I run mine way upward - Rich @ Riv style - and the weird thing about it is
how not-great it feels at first..then it's perfect! My rec for anyone
interested in this is to start your saddle pointed up higher than you think
will work, then keep riding after you think it's ridiculous. You may decide
by Mile 5 that this is the way to go.

not this way for everyone - there's variables like pelvic tilt, bike

[RBW] Re: Seat angle

2023-07-22 Thread R. Alexis
I would be game for a trip to DMOIA. I am not that far here in Fremont,
Nebraska (just outside Omaha) and have done the trip through many times to
Chicago. Would be nice to meet or see some list members again. I thing
there was some mention a while ago either on this list or iBOB about a
possible gathering in Omaha or Lincoln, Nebraska.

As for Brooks set up, I have two B-17 saddles on by Bridgestone XO-1 and
MB-1. I think I have both level or with a slight tilt. I always wondered on
those bikes I see with the Brooks saddle tilted way up. Will see how things
shake out once I get more riding on it.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

2023-07-22 Thread Kim H.
I am considering ordering a bicycle accessory from Circles-jp.a web store
in Japan.

https://shop.circles-jp.com/

What are your thoughts and comments about your experiences ordering from
them; pros and cons.

Thank-you.

[RBW] Re: Feedback wanted on ordering from circles-jp.com in Japan

2023-07-22 Thread Mr. Ray
Ordered from them in the past. Zero problems. Circles is an established
online shop in Japan. If the product/price is rightgo for it.
