[RBW] Re: FS: 58cm Saluki Butterscotch Complete Seattle

2023-06-19 Thread Matt Beecher
I'm sorry for whatever is prompting the sale. For anyone on the fence, the
Saluki is by far the best Rivendell that I have owned. I use it in a drop
bar configuration and for longer distances. It is just so dang
comfortable.

Best regards,
Matt in Oswego, IL

David, sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you can continue to ride
for longer than you think you will but understand your concerns as I have
seen friends with Parkinson’s and how each person seems to have different
challenges.

Good luck with your sale, try to keep one for as long as you can.

Best wishes

[RBW] Re: Anyone using an Appaloosa as a mostly-road bike?

2023-06-19 Thread larson....@gmail.com
I’ll give you my two cents. I ride a previous generation 62cm 2TT Appaloosa
set up with Billie bars and a 64cm Black Mountain Cycles monstercross bike
with drop bars. I ride pavement, gravel and dirt roads which can be steep
and rutted, but mostly in good shape. I really like the Appaloosa as an all
arounder and could see it being set up with drop bars-it is smooth and
comfortable and very stable. I do not think it would feel like a road bike
in any set up because of the long chain stays, and it is a heavy bike
(although it rides lighter than it feels). Both bikes are set up with
700x47 tires and by comparison my Black Mountain Cycles feels much quicker
in handling, yet still stable enough to handle any rough gravel road. I
think you might find the Appaloosa too much bike, and to me seems more like
a mixed terrain touring bike. As far as Rivendells, I would think a Sam
Hillborne would be a better drop bar choice for your needs with shorter
chai stays, slightly quicker handling and the ability to run a good sized
tire. I would like a Hillborne to complement my Appaloosa, but my BMC works
so well that I can’t really justify it. Maybe someone will give you some
thoughts on a Roadini for your purposes.

Re: [RBW] 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-06-19 Thread lconley
The bolt is probably 304 stainless-steel, which is an austenitic
stainless-steel and not magnetic. Ace hardware stores usually have a good
selection of metric hardware. Note that they do not have 7mm threaded bolts
(thread size, not Allen key size) which is what two bolt Nittos usually
use, not sure what size the IRD has. Probably bigger than a seven because
it is a single bolt.

I am thinking about getting one of the IRD seatposts for my Rosco Bubbe V1,
I haven't ream the seat tube yet.. Rivendell is out of stock on the silver
26.8, but Soma has them and has IRD stuff 30% off today.. Certainly less
expensive than a lugged Nitto.

2023-06-19 Thread Leah Peterson
Laing, the hex key size is 6, so that means I need a 7 mm bolt, then? And did I read correctly that hardware stores don’t carry the 7? Why???The post is certainly not perfect. I wish I could slam it, but I can’t because it widens at the top. It will just barely work for me, and as I get older over the coming decades I wonder if I will need to decrease the height. Then there’s the bolt. Then there’s the worry that the seat post will slip - I haven’t ridden it enough to say for sure that the company fixed the defect. But, hey, for 30% off you might want to try it!Sent from my iPhoneOn Jun 19, 2023, at 8:50 AM, lconley wrote:The bolt is probably 304 stainless-steel, which is an austenitic stainless-steel and not magnetic. Re: [RBW] 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-06-19 Thread lconley

The hex size and bolt size are not necessarily related. I would say that it
is more likely to be an 8 than a 7. You need to take the your bolt in and
have it matched for thread diameter, thread pitch (the number of threads
for a specified length), and threaded length, but in a magnetic material -
you should take the Hexlox as well. The only 7 mm bolts that I have ever
seen are the Nitto seatpost bolts - it is a rarely used size, which is why
hardware stores don't carry them.

Re: [RBW] Anyone using an Appaloosa as a mostly-road bike?

2023-06-19 Thread hugh flynn
I'm doing exactly that.

While I originally purchased my 2018 Appaloosa as a rough-stuff touring
bike, it's really become my primary road bike (without racks) as well as my
touring bike (with racks). I have it set up as a standard road bike with
Noodle drops (and a relatively short stem given the length of the top
tube). It's definitely heavier than my dedicated road bike (1999 Heron
Road), but I can't honestly say that it rides like a heavier bike. My time
over the same routes isn't at all different whether I take the Appaloosa or
the road bike. If I had to give up my road bike, I think I could do so
pretty easily now.

Re: [RBW] Anyone using an Appaloosa as a mostly-road bike?

2023-06-19 Thread Valerie Yates
I bought an Appaloosa when I was looking for a loaded touring bike for
pavement and it has been stellar for that. Mine is a 51 with 650B
wheels. I’ve climbed a bunch of passes on it with front and rear panniers,
enjoying the awesome views. As it happens, my very first long ride on it
was a steep rutted dirt/gravel mountain climb and it was glorious. So
memorably fun and capable. More recently, I’ve been doing more supported
tours so I’ve been thinking I should take off the big front rack and give
it another life as a dirt/gravel climbing bike. I am not sure what size
tire it can fit.

Re: [RBW] Anyone using an Appaloosa as a mostly-road bike?

2023-06-19 Thread Davey Two Shoes
I think you're better off with a Sam. I love that it can ride any terrain a
"gravel bike" can but it does so while feeling like a road bike and not
some sort of cross breed.

[RBW] Re: SunTour Shifter, plastic washer falling apart.

2023-06-19 Thread R. Alexis
I noticed in a few Rivendell employee and Grant's bikes the brass washer. I
know in the past Grant has mentioned replacing that plastic washer with a
solid brass one, but that the cost was prohibitive. I figured the ones
showing on their bikes were prototypes or fabricated solid ones. I have the
original Suntour Sprint shifters on my Schwinn and got a set of the
Rivendell Silver 2 shifters a short while ago. I got the replacement black
washers to have on hand just in case years ago for my Sprint shifters.
Looks like they compromised on the making of the Silver 2 shifters by
incorporating an alloy washer cover over the plastic. Wonder if you could
reduce the inner hole indentation on that domed brass washer to do the same
thing.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

The M-18 - and Nitto racks in general - are getting increasingly difficult
to obtain. I work in a shop with a QBP account, and waited over 6 months
for them to come in stock, I got 1 only because I had it on Item
Reservation. They sold out the day they re-stocked. No current re-supply

[RBW] ISO 44 t 110 bcd chainring silver VG/new

Does anyone have one? Have a few rings of my own plus other stuff to trade.

I want to keep the gearing I have with 60+ mm Big Ones when I switch to 48
mm- Supple Vitesse SLs by swapping the 42 outer for a 44.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: 3-speeding Quickbeams and SimpleOnes

2023-06-19 Thread Drew Saunders
My orange Quickbeam came set up as a "2 speed" with 32-40-chainguard
chainrings on a 74/110 triple (still has those) plus an 18t freewheel.
I immediately made it a "3 speed" with a 17/19 Dos Eno freewheel. The chain
is too slack for the 32/17 to work, so only 3 options: 40/17 (99% of my
riding), 40/19, 32/19.
I later added a 22T freewheel to the flip side of the flip/flop hub, which
will work with the 32, but not the 40, so I have an extremely inconvenient
4-speed.

I rarely take it out of the 40/17, but the headwinds this morning made me
wonder if I should have used the 40/19.

All of that was much cheaper and easier than getting an internally geared
hub, and if I did go for an IGH, I'd get a modern 7 or 8 speed anyway.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using an Appaloosa as a mostly-road bike?

2023-06-19 Thread Collin A
I had my 51 650b Joe setup as a mostly road/dirt touring bike for a couple
years, and it has gone through many iterations since then (currently living
life as a 1x9 flatland commuter). Is it a road race bike? No. Is it a fun
bike to ride on the road and connect the many dirt trails/roads/etc. that a
road bike would struggle on? Yes.

It was already mentioned, but short stems are your friend, and personally I
like the more modern-style drops with shorter reach and drop. A couple
photos for inspiration from Auburn area dirt trails:

I'd think your legolas would fit that niche better than a Joe, but at the
same time I wouldn't dare suggest to someone on this list to not buy
another Rivendell.

Cheers,
Collin in Sunny Berkeley

Re: [RBW] Re: 3-speeding Quickbeams and SimpleOnes

2023-06-19 Thread Patrick Moore
In defense of the old 3 speed igh, the drag, at least for the old SA AW,
has been tested at considerably less than that of much more complex,
multi-epicycle internal gear trains with 7+ gears, and my experience
(considerable with 2 and 3 speed SA hubs, only a little, but some with
modern 7+ gear hubs) bears this out very clearly.

IMO, the simplicity and low drag (and lower weight) of the simpler
multigear hubs makes them preferable, at least to me, to the more complex,
draggier, and heavier ones.

I have a QR 17/19 Dingle wheel on my Riv 1999 fixed gear road custom and
switching from the 76" to a 68" headwind gear is very easy, but I noticed
that I downshifted much more often and readily with the 2 speed TC hub (76"
direct and 66" underdrive), helpful when your direction into the wind or
the slope of the terrain changes often. My point is not that you ("all
y'all") should go get a TC -- last made in the 1940s? Mine is 1937 -- but
that igh's do offer some benefits over manual "get off the bike and move
the chain" shifting.

Personally, I perfer the external simplicity of a simple igh over multiple
cogs or rings, and I prefer multiple cogs over multiple rings, again for
simplicity and ease of use. AAYMMAWV.

I get back to that downgeared AW Schwinn: 69", 52", 39" which for a
$50-total-expenditure beater including new 36 t chainring + shop
labor (1989) proved to be very versatile indeed.

Patrick, this is in Harvard, MA; my area of Massachusetts doesn't have a

10 years I've been doing these rides (one friend has ridden all but one of
these rides with me. And, of course, I'm not 10 years old, I just took up
the tradition 10 years ago). Family came up by car with picnic and camping
supplies for an overnighter at the park, and here's the bike ready for the
more direct 35 mile ride home the next day:

Beautiful spot. Looks like an overlook near Fruitlands.

Nice area for a ride. Have not bicycled through there, but spent many days
motorcycling the region when I lived in Boston in the 90s for college.

Lovely photo and bike! My mother grew up at Groton School, where my
grandfather was organist, choir director, and music teacher. Many memories
of my parents loading my 4 brothers and me into the wayback of the station
wagon and driving there from Cohasset (where there are less hills but at
least the occasional scenic, and even iconic, ocean view).

Keep them coming, folks, I love them all even if I don't comment on each

2023-06-19 Thread David Linden
Thank you all. You may find it interesting that forced exercise such as
cycling is being studied as a way to slow the progression of PD.. Dr Jay
Albert at the Cleveland Clinic has the Pedaling for PD program. He started
putting the patients on a tandem and had the captain push the stoker
patient harder than they would normally do on their own. NOw he is using
gear driven bikes .How hard you need to ride remains to.be seen.

At least it is something worth trying.

I have several bikes that this group might find of. interest. I'll post
them over the next few days. It may take me awhile. I am finding that
typing is difficult and very frustrating due to my PD.

Thanks again.

2023-06-19 Thread Ted W
Fun to hear these descriptions and advice. As a soon to be Appa owner
planning to use it for 80/20, on/off-road I’ll be setting it up mostly as a
road bike but, really looking for an all-terrain bike with big tire
clearance and a road-ish feel.

Also, Collin, thank you for sharing your experience with the Appa and
drops. I’ve got a purple Appa coming in and I was worried about ETT being
so long with drops. If I may ask (and I don’t want to derail the main convo
so feel free to reply to me direct), what length stem do you normally use
for drops and compared with what you’re using on the Appa? I’ve been trying
to sort out what I’ll need and I think I’ve narrowed it down but would love
some direct experience to influence my decision.

PS. I don’t think your images uploaded correctly, they’re not showing up
for me either on the Google groups page or via email.

I'm not sure what kind of computer you're using, but some now have a talk

Re: [RBW] Northern Hemisphere Summer Riding Photos 2023

2023-06-19 Thread Dan Bluestein
Thanks Brian! The bar wrap is teal, but dusty from the trail. I had the
bike built by riv and didn't specify anything either way regarding
treatment but I think they put on a coat of clear shellac (this is my first
time using cloth tape and not sure I know the difference between shellacked
and not, but it doesn't seem like just plain fabric).

All--I agree with Ted, keep the photos coming. It's everyone's beautiful
images that inspired me to stop being a lurker and share mine.

2023-06-19 Thread Ed Carolipio
Hi Kim,

I've squeezed in a Schwalbe G-One Speed (no knobs) at 27.5x2.35 which
measures out to 60mm on the stock rims. There's about 5mm of clearance on
each side. The tires have to be deflated to clear the brake pads when
removing the wheel.

[RBW] Re: Mid-build Frustrations—Trek Elance 400

2023-06-19 Thread R. Alexis
I am probably not one to offer out how to get this going. I have a couple
projects myself that need pushed along. You may have to force yourself to
schedule the time for some of the things to get and finish the build. I
have a Gary Fisher Gemini tandem that sat for several years before I
finally pulled it out of the area it had been hanging out in last fall to
get it redone and rolling. Couple things changed in how I planned to build
it. Those changes worked out for the better. This same thing happened when
I built my Rivendell Mountain. Initial plans were to build it rigid with a
Nitto made Ritchey stem and standard seatpost which I had not picked out.
After looking at Softride Beam bikes and suspension stems I decided to go
with a Softride suspension stem and Thudbuster Uni-Pivot seatpost. Love the
set up and the only change I would make is to get a Cane Creek 3G
Thudbuster ST seatpost or the eeSilk+ to replace the Uni-Pivot. Only wish
they came in silver. Probably would have made the switch a while ago if
that were the case.

Do what you can. Sometimes the direction of the build can take a turn in
the process or after. Have fun with it.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis
