[RBW] Re: FS: 61.5 Swoopy Proto Gallop in silver, with canti studs

2023-06-07 Thread Johnny Alien
I believe they are scheduled for next year. The changes from the prototype
that I know of are side pull instead of canti brakes and a less swoopy top
tube. It still swoops but not as much. They are now being designed around
albastache bars so I don't know if there were any geometry changes because
of that. Most likely nothing to any major degree.

I used to always fender my bikes because I liked the looks but then

Thanks Johnny. The Charlie may well be my first Rivendell (if a Platypus
doesn't drop into my lap first).

I'm beginning to outgrow my '90s 650b converted race bike and have my
sight set on a roadish Riv. Preferably a swoopy one, just because.

I find a use for them nearly every ride - there is always some puddle or a bunch of goose poop that makes me thank my lucky stars for fenders. I envied the woman behind me, who was surely spared by MY fenders. On Jun 7, 2023, at 8:17 AM, Johnny Alien wrote:I used to always fender my bikes because I liked the looks but then realized that I was never in any conditions where they were needed from a practical sense so I changed my mind and now never use them.On Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 11:04:25 PM UTC-4 Bicycle Belle Ding Ding! wrote:I need to try the Clem out on gravel; in fact, I need to find some gravel. [RBW] Re: Leo Roadini, Mustachioed & More

2023-06-07 Thread Piaw Na
If the bike came with mid-reach Shimano brakes you're unlikely to get
anything wider than 38mm in clearance no matter what brakes you run. It's
also unlikely that centerpull calipers will provide appreciably more
stopping power than the Shimano dual pivot calipers which already have
plenty of stopping power, though you might get more a little more tire
clearance.

It's hilarious that you think the South Bay isn't ideal country for
hillibike riding --- there are lots of combination rides that minimize
climbing off pavement --- for instance, you could climb Montebello road and
descend Stevens Canyon fire trail. Or climb Highway 9 and use all the dirt
connectors from Saratoga gap to Russian Ridge OSP and descend Crazy Pete's
and Dirt Alpine (or Stevens Canyon). I wouldn't hesitate to take my
Roadini to El Corte Madera Creek preserve either --- a little bit of
walking never killed anyone. I've ridden all over the world and for
year-round day riding it's really difficult to beat the Bay Area or even
come close.

Look for a early Lemond Zurich 61 cm. They are on the big side, will
Cypress 700x30 tires, short reach brakes with pads at the bottom of the

BUT. I’m not good at gravel. I have no idea what the kids are doing

 1. Can I keep my VO wavy fenders on a gravel bike? Here’s what I have,

 3. How wide? I have 42s on my bikes now and I don’t feel like they are
 wide enough.

 4. Tubeless or no? These wheels are tubeless-compatible but I put a

Here is my Clem in its current configuration, and yes, I know the

2023-06-07 Thread Jason Fuller
GLWS max! I might have to be the second person to list a silver canti
Gallop for sale in this list (but for shorter folks) as I'm once again just
finding the bike storage situation to be too jam-packed here and there's a
lot of redundancy between the CHG and the Sam.

Great bike for those considering, nothing quite like it - long and comfy
but also has a sporty flex to it. Would make an amazing randonneur bike.

*FS: 61.5 Swoopy Proto Gallop in silver with canti studs *

This is your chance to own one of the few prototype Charlie Gallop
 bikes with canti/v-brake studs.

The Gallop is a speedy road bike with a long wheelbase that takes wide
tires with fenders - the dream road setup. The upcoming 2024 production
ones won’t have a canti / v-brake option, so if you want ‘em buy this one.

It’s a great riding, stable and super comfy bike that I have a feeling
I will regret selling. From Will’s update: “Grant has been riding it and
says if it gets any zippier, it'll be a liability issue.” - I don't think
 it needs any more endorsements.

 Some additional notes:

My pbh is around 90, I'm 5'11" with long legs. The low top tube means
you can probably upsize and use sweptback bars if the frame is bigger than
your usual size. There's a wide spectrum of pbh's that can fit this bike.

The frame is in great condition but it has been used for commuting and
recreational rides around the city, which means it has a few minor
scratches here and there, but nothing major and no dents, dings or
 crashes.
 (happy to take pictures)

This one has the Charlie Decals including horses in the chain stays,
but it has a Rosco badge because it isn’t an official Gallop. Will said
 the
decals are over the clear coat and they're fairly tough but eventually
they'll crack. I already see the Riv logo decal on the downtube peeling
 off.

*A couple of options for the sale below. *Prices do not include
packing and shipping - local pick up in Boston preferred but I can ship
 and
if you're patient I can also pack the bike myself to save some $. Also, I
assume Paypal or Venmo F&F. Finally, I made various upgrades from the
original demo bike and think this is fair, but please let me know if I'm
 off.

[RBW] Easy on/off (with bolted clamps, like Ergons?) non-anatomical grips for bottom of drop bar hooks

2023-06-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Speculating here. I may come to a situation where I will be swapping SA AM
and ASC wheels. The ASC takes a unique and proprietary trigger shifter,
thus a wheel swap would mean a shifter swap.

I mount my trigger shifters toward the bottom of the curve on the
right-side drop bar hook, about 3" below the brake lever. I'd like to be
able to slide the different shifters on and off the bar. That means I won't
want bar tape (or Velox bar plugs) getting in the way.

One solution might be to tape the bar from brake lever upward and use an
easy on/off grip for the bottom of the bar. IIRC, Craig Montgomery did this
to one or some of his touring bikes.

So, question: Is there a non-anatomical (ie, non-"ergonomic") grip that can
more or less easily slide on and off the ends-of-hooks flats of a 25.4 mm
bar?

Or would I be left with spreading and re-squeezing the clamp every time I
made the swap?

I suppose I could even use Ergons; really, the bigger problem is the 25.4mm
diameter of the bar.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Red Shift offers drop bar control grips that are sized for road bars vs
flat bars. You can get just the lower grips. I've seen these for sale on
Amazon as well as Red Shift's website.

2023-06-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, I hadn't heard about these. Actually, easy on/off aside, those
might be the answer to my perennial left palm problem with numbness and
pain in all except the hoods position, tho' with sufficient fidgiting I can
ride for 5 miles non-stop in the hooks.

But I expect that once on they'll be stuck on tight. Does anyone know?

I may be asking for a (metaphorical) shape that is both round and square

LOL, yeah, we've had no rain for a month here and the goose poop at the
lakefront is epic right now. +1 for fenders.

That said, I have yet to find any goose poop on a gravel road. Our
Wisconsin network of crushed limestone rail-trails, on the other hand, can
be full of stuff you don't want spraying on your legs and back. Last year I
did a 300km loop around SE Wisconsin, 111km of which was on trails. It
didn't rain on us, but it had rained the day before, and some of the trails
were still pretty damp. I was very happy to have fenders, even though there
was a fair amount of sand rattling around in them. The guy riding behind me
was sure glad I had them.

Well, at the risk of seriously derailing the thread, ... that depends.
Fresh horse poop is pretty bad but it dries out quickly and then isn't a
problem. Goose poop stays an icky, gooey, smelly mess for a long time and
is a putrid green color. To try to keep this on topic ... I don't mind
riding without fenders where there will be horse poop. I'll do anything to
avoid riding without fenders through goose poop.

It probably matters that I've owned a horse and so I'm kind of fond of the
smell of horse poop.

I've really learned to love fenders (honjo/VO) even outside of rainy
season. Keeps a lot of dust and dirt off the drive train if placed
correctly, reducing wear and maintenance. Sometimes there are unavoidable
puddles or wet spots. Animal waste. Human waste. (City riding) keep bags
and strapped things from rubbing. They look COOL.

I'd like to have an bike without fenders. But I really just love fenders...

Albastache are undeniably great bars, but for my (less) money, Soma 3 speed
2’s are the greatest mustache on the planet. They’re fairly wide at 54cm,
and they take “normal” brake levers, which I don’t get scared I’m going to
catch on some underbrush with. And my thumbies fit anywhere, so I don’t
have to run 26mm Paul’s on the sleeve, or have a good pile of vintage band
clampers around…

Have them on my Rambouillet, currently set in the sloped up way with a 15cm

I just ordered a 57cm purple one and will likely do Antonio's build. I'm
really excited. I had a purple MB-2 from around 92' that met its fate too
early 20 years ago on top of my buddy's roof rack in a low garage... I
imagine most of you can 100% relate to obsessing over your next bike. I
think it's actually pretty funny - but I'm super excited.

[RBW] Need help sizing for the upcoming Appaloosa

2023-06-07 Thread Ted W
Long rambling post ahead, but bear with me...

Folks, I'm stressing about this way more than is probably necessary but
I've been pining for an Appaloosa for years and I really want to make sure
I won't be bummed out by a poor fit. So, here's the deal. I called Riv and
spoke with Roman. After discussing my current bike and my size he suggested
the 57cm. Now, I'm not doubting his knowledge on the subject but I can't
wrap my head around the difference in measurements between what I'm
currently riding and the 57cm Appaloosa and I'm hoping maybe to get some
more opinions on the subject to either help me be comfortable with the idea
of the 57 or realize that I need the 54...

Current bike has the following measurements:
58cm ETT, approx. 39cm reach, 57cm stack and 83cm standover

The 57cm Appa has:
62.5cm ETT, 41.3cm reach, 63.5cm stack and 85.2cm standover

The 54cm Appa has:
59.8cm ETT, 39.6cm reach, 60.3cm stack and 82.3cm standover

My PBH is around 87cm so I have plenty of room for either size

My current bike has a standard setback seatpost with a B17 saddle. I have a
100mm quill stem and Velo Orange, 50m randonneur bars and 170mm crank arms.
In this configuration, the bike is almost perfect.

Now, I think I'd be quite happy with the additional standover and stack
height; my current bike has around 160mm of steerer sticking up out of the
head tube, so being able to drop that by 70mm would be aesthetically
beneficial. Not to mention the extra top tube length combined with the more
slack head tube of the Appa might prevent the toe overlap And since I'm
currently running a 100mm stem, I can easily cut that back to accommodate
the additional reach.

My main concern with the 57cm Appa is the ETT length as it relates to my
knee angle / knee-ankle line. I seem to have a fairly short femur as I'm
always having to push my saddles fairly far forward to get my knee in line
with, or slightly over my ankle to avoid pain in my knees. Being that my
current bike has only about 1-2cm of additional room on the rails to slide
the seat forward, and the 57cm Appa effectively places the seat tube
another 2cm further back, I'm concerned I'm going to end up unable to
achieve the necessary knee/ankle alignment.

So, now that I have probably made myself sound sufficiently insane and
obsessive, give me some opinions. Maybe there's a 0 setback 26.8 seatpost
that could bail me out if it's a problem? Will the other differences in the
frame geometry compensate for the differences in ways I'm not considering?
Hit me with anything you think might be relevant :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Wiring inside the Fork and Frame?

2023-06-07 Thread Ted W
It's a bit of mess right now, but here's the wiring for my GBW:

For the bottom we reemed out the hole near the drop outs ever so slightly
to let the wires fit through and water sealed it with some goop (hot glue):
https://photos.app.goo.gl/r5PvzDjBGAFrSycc7

For the top we used a downtube barrel adjuster we found with the same
thread pitch as a mounting screw and threaded the wire through it to avoid
having to negotiate the 90º bend at the top (done that on another bike and
cursed every minute of it). Once again, we sealed the hole with goop:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/MH6KwkcRCUgXvinC7

Hope the additional reference material helps.

Ted, goose poop is definitely worse.
Zoology 101; geese (as do all birds) excrete their urine through the same
orifice as their stool. So, for the record, goose poop is an acidic mix of

Use FENDERS and just say NO to bird poo!

I totally was/am tempted by the Albastache. I'm leaning Mustache because
the Albastache ends seem to come back maybe 1-2" further back than the
Mustache ends. And if I do barcon shifting then it'll be good to have more
rearward clearance for stoplight trackstands. I also think because the stem
is short for me, it's probably better to have the slightly more drop that
the Mustache has compared to the Albastache at or near the bar ends. And I
don't know but I hope that the forward curves will be perfect reach for me
with a 5cm stem. Should be a little shorter reach than what I'm used to
when riding hoods on drop bars on bikes with longer stems, and a little
longer than the tops riding reach I'm used to. *Think* there's a good
chance it's just about perfect to be the most comfortable and most aero
position.

I haven't felt any anxiety over stopping power of them. I haven't done any
fast descents, but I have on another bike with mid-reach Ultregra calipers.
I don't have any personal reason to worry about long-reach but came across
threads in which people were bemoaning reduced stopping power specifically
when going from mid-reach to long-reach or going with long-reach instead of
centerpull. So that spooked me a little but maybe I should just ignore that.

Thanks so much for the link to the Tumblr page for the 2017 version of the
Roadini. Sorta jibes with what Ed told me. He said I might be able to get
35mm in there with the sidepulls. But I guess that text from Grant was
presuming use of their complete stock build's mid-reach sidepulls? Because
Ed said he fitted 38mm tires (Panaracer Pasela PT) into this 2017 frame,
when he had DC-610 calipers in there. He also seemed to feel like there is
room in the frame for more than 38mm with centerpulls and I read in your
1000 mile review that you got 40mm in yours. I don't know if I'm
reading/guessing wrong but it seems that the Roadini's frame clearance
hasn't changed, but the stock complete brake spec has.

But, in any case, appreciate the confirmation that I need to switch to
centerpull to get beyond 35mm. I'll just chill out on all the possible
changes and get Ed's money's worth out of the 32mm Stampede Passes. Wait
until I wear them out and then try out 35mm and maybe tubeless.

I've ridden all over the world and for
year-round day riding it's really difficult to beat the Bay Area or even
come close.

What I had in mind when I was thinking of some platonic "ideal" is living
amidst country gravel roads, and maybe with more gentle rolling terrain.
Not dogging on what we have here. I've appreciated reading your blog
entries and I've been working back up to the fitness to explore and ride
routes and spots you're describing. A Montebello variant is way up the
list. Frankly, I'm also working my way out of paranoia after giving up
extended road riding when I became a father.

Even in high desert ABQ, NM with a citywide average of 9.5", fenders are
useful and not merely ornamental; 3 of my 4 bikes have them. Our monsoon

Wildlife: We have plenty of horses and geese, but while I see plenty of

seeing any from geese along the right of way, pavement or dirt, despite
riding through many family hangouts.

2023-06-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm not a yellow bike fan, but I have to say that your Platypus does look
pretty; I don't know, perhaps different colors look better on different
types of bike?

I always considered my yellow w/black accents Motobecane Grand Record to be
a rather ugly bike, tho' it was a beater so that didn't matter.

The yellow, silver, white, grey, and black somehow go well together; that
crankset with guard, big ring, small ring, somehow looks very appealing. I
have to confess that the -- sorry, a bit color blind, but they do stand up
and shout -- bright purple? Pink? - pedals upset my equilibrium, but
perhaps that's intentional. I put bright orange bar tape on my Brit Rac
Green Matthews, and used bright yellow 3M tape to finish off the black tape
on the earlier MAP bar on my black Monocog -- which currently has a temp
tape job of black scraps spliced together with white 3M tape.

[RBW] Re: Need help sizing for the upcoming Appaloosa

2023-06-07 Thread DavidP
Hoch's question about intended bars gets to the crux of choosing a frame
size, I think - you want a larger roomier frame for swept back bars and
less reach for drop bars though by changing stem length you can likely get
both bars to work on either.

I have the same PBH as you and am comfortable on drop bar bikes with 58cm
ETT. By comparison the ETT on my 60cm Platy seems astronomical, and yet I
run a 120mm stem along with swept back bars and have a fairly upright
position (~75deg back angle) when back on the grips.

With regards to your concern about reach - I may be missing something but
the extra 2cm reach also means the BB moves back along with the seat tube
(since reach is measured from BB forward) so the saddle / knee / pedal
alignment isn't impacted? What would impact the saddle to BB alignment is a
difference in seat tube angle.

Re: [RBW] Northern Hemisphere Summer Riding Photos 2023

2023-06-07 Thread Josh (BertoBerg)
Hi Patrick-

Thanks for the compliment! The bars are the Nitto 177 (aka the Noodle).

This is my road-gravel-singletrack bike hence the need for same wild
gearing. Its a 38 in the front and a 10-42 in the back. I don't use the 36
and 42 tooth cogs very often but when I do its usually on very steep and
loose terrain. These bailout gears can be a life saver!

My other bikes are vintage road bikes so they use traditional
gearing...53/39, 13-25, etc.

The tires are RH Snoqualmie Passes (700x44). They are great!

One feature that is strange to me (that is a statement of personal feeling,

with 52/42 and 14-24 5-speeds. What is the size of the chainring and the

Re: [RBW] Re: Need help sizing for the upcoming Appaloosa

2023-06-07 Thread Ted W
Thanks to the help from my LBS I was directed to bike insights and pulled
up another frame I own and compared it to the Appa. I came to the
conclusion that I should go with the 57cm based on the overlaid wire frames
of the bikes and purchased one of these in purple.

To Hoch’s question, I want to run drop bars. I’ve tried swept back bars on
my Gus and while I like it, this build will serve a different purpose and
I’m generally more comfortable with a more upright, drop bar position.

To expand a bit (ok a lot), the 57cm Appa had a difference of about 45mm
overall compared to the 54cm Surly Disc Trucker it will be replacing. I
naively purchased the trucker thinking I could get away with the smaller
frame to maintain 26” wheels by stretching it out with a longer stem and
long setback seat post. I was successful, however, in doing so I changed
the handling characteristics quite negatively (I believe due to extending
the reach so dramatically) and this make it feel like the front wheel
wanted to flop over when cornering. When lining up the BB in the wire frame
models, the seat tube and head tube angles of the two bikes were nearly
identical and the tops of the seat post collar was fairly similar. The
primary differences were the extended wheelbase of the Appa due to the
extra long chainstays and the head tube being about 45mm further forward,
as mentioned previously. So, this made it fairly easy to realize that I
could get the 57cm Appa and got quite nicely with a rather “normal” stem
length of around 50mm instead of the 120mm I needed on the Surly.

[RBW] Re: Leo Roadini, Mustachioed & More

2023-06-07 Thread Piaw Na

I suspect the brake bridge got moved in the later model of frames. In any
case, the mid-reach Shimano brakes have very good clearance. Check out the
pictures here: https://blackmtncycles.com/clearance-pt-ii-road-frames/.
While centerpulls have even better clearance, I don't think 3mm is worth
spending the money on.

I would not hesitate the Roadini up Fremont Old OSP with 35mm tires.
Almaden Quick Silver county park and Redwood Regional Preserve also have
good gravel that are not too steep. I remember riding those with my kids
and not having to deploy the tow rope much. I need to get around to riding
Planet of the Apes.

You’ve already concluded the 57 was the right size. I think so, too, based
on the fact you wanted to set this up as an Upright dropbar bike. Higher
the bars, closer the bars come towards you. 54 would’ve felt too cramped.
Best wishes on the build!

the 57cm. Now, I'm not doubting his knowledge on the subject but I can't

more opinions on the subject to either help me be comfortable with the

Current bike has the following measurements:
58cm ETT, approx. 39cm reach, 57cm stack and 83cm standover

 The 57cm Appa has:
 62.5cm ETT, 41.3cm reach, 63.5cm stack and 85.2cm standover

 The 54cm Appa has:
 59.8cm ETT, 39.6cm reach, 60.3cm stack and 82.3cm standover

My PBH is around 87cm so I have plenty of room for either size

My current bike has a standard setback seatpost with a B17 saddle. I
have a 100mm quill stem and Velo Orange, 50m randonneur bars and 170mm
crank arms. In this configuration, the bike is almost perfect.

Now, I think I'd be quite happy with the additional standover and stack

head tube, so being able to drop that by 70mm would be aesthetically
beneficial. Not to mention the extra top tube length combined with the

I have couple of suggestions, more for the participant pi-droppers
 than for John:

 1) Please be cautious and think twice about listing your actual
home address. Especially if you live somewhere like Denver or
 Oakland,
where bike theft is a major industry. Thieves could use this info to
 stake-out and target your place.

 2) it would be great to list the model(s) and size(s) of bikes you
own. So many times I wish I could have test-ridden something, but
 didn't
know how to find an example nearby. This could really help.
