[RBW] Re: Homer Hilsen: Braking performance

2023-04-27 Thread Tom Palmer
I have a Soma Buena Vista that can run 700c or 650b with the 559s. With
700c braking is excellent with the pad is at the top of the brake slot. On
the 650b braking is fair and the pad is at the very bottom of the slot..
Good enough to West Michigan, but would not even in the hilly parts of
Indiana.
I have settled on 700c for this bike just because I like the braking and it
fits 38s.

I was 100% buying a Charlie until the brake change now I am 95% not going
to buy one. I have never had a problem with R559s and have used them on
quite a few bikes but their clearance limitations are the real problem. Wet
weather downhill performance can be weak but it isn't a deal breaker. I
want big slicks on a road bike and the Charlie was going to be that bike
for me. Oh well.

Thinking more and more about welding canti posts onto my old sidepull Sam
instead though...

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis Old vs New?

2023-04-27 Thread 'peech1...@yahoo.com' via RBW Owners Bunch
I am down to 2 bikes: a 2010 Hillborne and an Atlantis MIT. Both are set
up for upright riding with albatross bars. I love them both. Hillborne
has the "toe clap overlip" (clever huh?) that the MIT doesn't. Both have
their merits with the hill borne seeming to be a zippier ride. MIT is a
tad more comfortable with 650b 47 tires as opposed to 700c 35 tires on the
Sammy. If I had to choose one bike it would be the Atlantis. Just more
comfortable and versatile. Rivendell bikes really have improved my life.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lighter than your Platypus

2023-04-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Yes, there are times when I feel (seriously) like converting it to a single
speed. But it's my one derailleur bike and I figure I need at least one of
those.

If I stripped it of fenders, rack, lighting system, and bag I guesstimate
the weight would drop to about 25 lb, not bad for steel and aluminum, and
lighter than the typical 26-28 lb for a highish end (non-tricked) XT 26er
circa 1991, despite the huge wheels.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Old vs New?

2023-04-27 Thread Mackenzy Albright
I don't have an atlantis - but for a long time rode a crust romancuer,
which was somewhat based off the old atlantis's. I thought it was the bees
knees for a long time, but never felt right *for me* especially while
trying to use upright bars. It felt amazing with drops however. Due to neck
injuries and unable to set the bike up in it's best form decided to trade
my Romanceur for a Clementine. It is a day and night difference of ride
with boscos and long top tube and wheelbase.

My summarization would be:

For drop bar setup - an older atlantis would be nice. There are a more
similar bikes available like the older atlantis frames. AKA large tire
clearance touring bikes. Bassi Le Montreal, Crust Romancuer, etc.

For upright bars - the long wheelbase and top tube rivs truly shine in
their comfort, performance, and handling. I don't think there are a lot of
bikes out there outside of rivendell with similar wheelbase and handling
characteristics. I get a bit annoyed with the constant rebuttal that
"they're just over priced 80's mountain bikes" - but they took everything
good about 80s mountain bikes and improved it. Longer wheelbases and top
tubes. Better steering geometry. Higher head tubes. More clearance for
larger tires. Lots of braze on options for racks and bags. etc.

If anyone on the list visits Philly stop by his shop. There are also a lot
of great coffee and food options. Have a Cheesesteak or a hoagie. Swing by
the La Colombe mother ship where it all started.

Apparently, I have long-term saddle commitment issues. I’ve never worn a

I'm sorry, what logic are we talking about?

I shove back and sit up for low-cadence, high-torque pedaling, and I move
forward and down when I want to spin fast. My riding includes both extremes
but it also includes the entire middle ground. So again, I don't understand
"logic."

Erl, that Hunq looks like it means business! Very nice. Beautiful photos

Very groovy looking Hunq, Weth! How big are those tires? Bikie's right.
They mean business!
