Re: [RBW] Re: 48mm tire choice?

2023-03-08 Thread Tom Wyland
Yes, thanks everyone. I'll give the "high end" RH tires a try this go
around. I'm a fan of Schwalbe so those will likely be my second go-round.
I've tried Big Bens and Schwalbe Marathon HS in the past as well. I'm not
sure I'm sold on *suppleness *yet. The good news is the Platy already soaks
up lots of road vibration.

I just did this entire exercise in my head this week: * Need 1 new 42mm
tire > replace both tires > get bigger tires 48mm > get bigger fenders to
fit tires > upgrade fender-mounted tailight? > upgrade wheels*?!

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-08 Thread Pam Bikes
I tried a poncho but didn't feel like I could adequately signal. When it's
cold, I prefer the jacket/pants. When it's warm I like a jacket/rain skirt
with shorts. Next I'd like to cut the sleeves off a jacket and use a rain
vest or short sleeve jacket so I won't heat up too much. I'll go half
sleeves then short sleeves then to a vest to see what works better.

p.s. Newer jackets w/less PFAS seem to be less durable.

Re: [RBW] FS/FT

2023-03-08 Thread John Johnson
Hello Edward,

When you say the bars go in too much, do you mean you're looking for more
width? Or something with less backsweep?

I love the Toscos for general riding/bit offroad. But there are a million
bars out there and whatbars.com is a great resource.

Otherwise I'll but the pedals if you still have 'em.

I'll send you a PM for that.

Cheers,

John

[RBW] Taking it to 2

2023-03-08 Thread Patrick Moore
On-topic content: Bike in question is the 1999 Joe Starck fixed gear road
custom.

Well, a year after I received the 2-speed fixed TF and TC-hub wheels, I
finally got the shifter sorted, or so I thought, and I've ridden both hubs
briefly and they're pretty nice! TF gives direct and 75% (52/17 X 24.8"
wheel = 76" and 57"), TC gives direct 76" and 86.5% or 66". The TF drop is
like shifting from a 52 t ring to a 39 t ring while using the 17 t cog.

The TF has hardly any lash; it feels like a fixed cog and a well-adjusted
chain. The TC has much more slop, but less than the annoying S3X, and the
direct-to-2nd gap is far, far more useful.

The NOS TF top-tube-mount quadrant shifter pulls a shortish amount of chain
and, of course, shifts the TF perfectly. I had hoped it would work as well
with the TC, but that hub was modified by having a modern AW 3-spline
driver replace the original 12-spline driver for which cogs are very hard
to find, all of them 1/8". (I've filed modern 3-spline SA 3/32" cogs to fit
the 12-spline TF driver, and I suppose I could re-swap the TC driver, but
it's easier to get a new shifter, and I found a NOS SA 3 speed quadrant
shifter on British eBay which I hope will arrive this month. The longer
pull of the 3 speed shifter ought to allow installation and adjustment to
shift the 2-speed TC and perhaps even the TF, since the cable pull from 2nd
to 1st is considerably more than that from 3rd to 2nd.

Pictures soon, and more ride reports after I ride them more. But what's to
report about 2 speeds???

The TC hub was rechromed nicely by a Seattle shop; the TF is 85-year-old
NOS (both hubs are dated 1937), and Aaron at Rat City Bikes did the
overhauls.

On that subject, I recently bought a rear derailer made by S-Ride, one of

big discounts (if you subscribe to their emails) - usually 30-50% off.
Anyway, I got mine for $15 and it's good.

In the meantime - a dis-assembled NOS 1972 40 hole AW and the longest axle
that I could find. Just a standard 3 speed, not one of Patrick's exotic
Sturmey-Archers. For the Rosco Baby. Original grease/oil was fairly
petrified.

What kind of oil do you use in your SAs, Patrick?

Re: [RBW] Re: Taking it to 2

2023-03-08 Thread Patrick Moore
I use any light-midweight oil; currently chainsaw oil because I have 3/4 of
a pint but I've used 10-40 or whatever my car uses and I think even
transmission fluid. FWIW, the experts say that regular motor oil is fine. I
daresay that 50 weight oil in winter might be to thick; I'd not use a very
thin oil like sewing machine oil. I see a bottle of Phil: That is also
recommended at least by some experts.

A few years ago I pulled the almost-unused S3X out of my box to ponder what
to do with it -- I dislike the lash and gear gaps (tho' setting it up for a
~90-95" High with big ring and small cog so that you get a downhill gear, a
moderate cruising gear, and a better than nothing climbing gear works
alright. Maybe that's how it was designed?). I had casually read somewhere
about someone filling his up with grease, so I took my grease gun and did
just that, with sticky auto bearing grease. Then I read that this is a
stupid thingh to do. I'll have to disassemble it and clean out it if I use
it again.

Is your work tray magnetic? I should get something like that; can you give
product maker or link? Thanks.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Noodle 54cm, Nitto Technomic 70mm, Silver Chainguard

2023-03-08 Thread Bryan Dalik
Hi all,

Have some excellent condition parts for sale that didn't work out for my
build.

120$ - 54cm Nitto Noodle Drop Handlebars - Brand new. Riv is sold out so
I'm pretty sure they're unavailable from anywhere else. I literally mounted
them and took them around the block before decided they're too wide for me.
Some scuffing from mounting onto the stem, but brand new and in packaging.

50$ - 70cm Nitto Techonmic Stem - 25.4 clamp - ended up needing a 26.0,
this is also brand new and in original packaging.

30$ - 38t Silver Chainring guard - I ended up going with a 42t instead so
this is available and in great shape. Some light use on it. Will work with
a 36 or 38t outer chainring.

Feel free to contact me. Will cut a deal for a bundle. Thanks!

Bryan

That light and bag aren't going to play well though, at best the Edelux

Yup. Going to have to work on that, either modifying the existing bracket or
switching to a shorty.

The brass bits are nice but if you just bend the original light mount a bit
it would fit under the straddle cable and do the job nicely.

[RBW] Long ride on a Sam Hillborne

2023-03-08 Thread st nick
I just saw inquiry on my Sam's handlebar and stem.
The bars are Sunlite North Road in the alloy version.
They are also offered in a slightly heavier steel version.
The stem is a bit of a Nitto dirt drop knock off I found on amazon.
It works well but the name on it is laughableFito.

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-08 Thread Slin
I'm a huge fan of ponchos (with fenders) and riding in the rain in general!
I wear regular clothes riding a bike, and putting on rain pants and jacket
just felt like too much so I wouldn't put it on in drizzle and I'd get wet
anyway. The few times I did wear rain pants and jacket, I got soaked from
sweat.

As others have mentioned, a poncho is nice and breathable from the big
opening on the bottom so you can avoid waterproofing treatments that wear
out or expensive 'breathable' fabrics.

And back to my other point, putting on a poncho takes less than 10 seconds
and when I get to my destination, I just slip it off!

Yeah, it's been fun for me now that there's been some rain again here in
the Bay Area. I feel like Yehuda Moon.
