[RBW] Re: Make and model of stock Clem L saddle?

2022-08-15 Thread Garth
You're best off to contact Riv Yakeen as they may still have some to sell
you. I can't tell by your photo which version it may be currently, and/or
if it is the same model that had originally came with Clems, which appeared
to be a non-retail OEM version of the Tour E-Grip. That's the model Joe
referred to, but non-retail OEM versions typically have a more bland
looking/unmarked cover as opposed to the retail versions which are nicer
looking and branded.

[RBW] 2021 Homer wheelbase numbers

2022-08-15 Thread Daman Kumar
Hello, Rivsters,

Has anyone here measured the wheelbase of their 61.5 cm Homer? I've been
meaning to replace my 59 cm Clem H with a shorter (emphasis on the *er*)
wheelbase-d bike for months now, and only just started actively looking at
options. The wheelbase is the only real complaint I have with the Clem --
it is way too long to fit on a bus rack, which diminishes a bike's utility
for me.

Given the increase in chainstay length for the 2021 model, I wanted to
check with the group if anyone has measured, or could measure, the
wheelbase of their 61.5 cm bike.

I was originally considering picking up a Sam frame from the next batch,
but I do want to get an Atlantis a few years down the line as my forever
bike, and I felt there's a considerable overlap between the two. I intend
to use the Homer as an S24O/bike-camping, go-fast (when not bringing
groceries) bike. Randonneuring has interested me for a while, and it just
seems perfect (although, I don't think *I* would have much trouble using a
Sam or Atlantis for brevets given I'm not really a fast rider). At under
170 lbs. I believe it shouldn't be a problem. I digress.

So... anybody?

Clem tax: a picture on a typical PNW winter morning at Lake Sammamish
P.S. How cool would a canti Homer be, eh?

[RBW] Re: One Rivendell to rule them all

2022-08-15 Thread 'Jim Kofron' via RBW Owners Bunch
Alexander, I'm out in the western burbs (Downers Grove) with a big
Platypus--if you're interested, give me a shout. I love mine, but my last
bike was a Sanwa from the mid 80's--and that's the last time I rode it...
so I'm not a good resource for comparisons.

As Emily said, I was a bit mortified that I spent this much on a bike, but
it is a ridable piece of art... and it makes me very happy.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Sycip "singles bar"

2022-08-15 Thread Adam Ratcliffe
I was running the Soma Oxford bar (essentially the same as the Albatross)
on my Midnight Special and wanted something a little wider and less swept
back but still with some rise. I put the Sycip JJJ bar on and have been
really liking it so far. It has similar sweep to the Singles Bar and is a
little wider, but not by much, and has 20mm rise. I've found it a pretty
nice balance between on road comfort and control on rougher terrain. I'm
using ESI chunky grips on them.

I have a Jones Bar SG 2.5 Loop in Silver Aluminum, still in the packaging

Also have an aluminum Albatross bar I would trade.

OR I could buy outright from you.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Sizing

2022-08-15 Thread Brian Turner
I'm right there with you; 83.5 / 84 PBH, and my saddle height is around
72-73cm. From what I've read and seen, you'd probably be a solid 53 on a
Toyo-built Atlantis. I've ridden a Toyo 58, and while I found it
comfortable to ride, it was really only because it had skinny tires and
swept-back bars. I would love to find a 56 Toyo to try out.

Current models, you'd be a 53 or 55 depending on what tire sizes you'd
prefer to run. Personally, I like fatter tires and prefer riding rougher
terrain, so if I were to look at a current Atlantis, I'd go for a 53.

I'm sure there are folks who have more real riding experience spanning all
years of the Atlantis, who could better advise.

Not trying add complexity to the topic. I have a 83 PBH and ride a 54.5

am not sure how long Rivendell actually made that frame size but for me it

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Sizing

2022-08-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Well it's all quite subjective and there's so many variables involved,
which is why Grant doesn't like to post geometry charts. According to your
PBH and saddle height numbers you're kinda on the cusp of 53 and 56cm on
that early Atlantis page, and you have to consider that this was still deep
into the drop/moustache bar era. The 56 is pretty dang stretched so you'd
probably want the 53 unless you're running pullbacks. Simple, right? 😂

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Sizing

2022-08-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Ah dangit, I think I said that backwards.

Shorter version: the original Atlantis was designed with drop/moustaches
bars in mind, the size you need depends a lot on which types of bars you
run. Pullbacks like Bosco or Billie? Go big!

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Sizing

2022-08-15 Thread Brian Turner
Nah, your point was understood. This explains why when I ride my friend's
58 Toyo (with the equivalent of Billie bars), it's doable, but just to big
of a frame size to try to shoehorn into my riding style.
Now this discussion has me pondering a search for a 56 Toyo (last thing I
need bc I haven't even fully funded my current Riv project!). H

[RBW] hunqapillar history

2022-08-15 Thread Jason Zakaras
I've been searching around to try to find some of the historical info on
the Hunqs and the various MUSA/MIT variants. Does anyone know *roughly*
the release dates of the hunqapillars, batch quantities, and locations of
production? I'm mostly interested in the MUSA variant, were there multiple
paint options from Waterford or just green/cream and what order these were
produced in comparison to the MIT hunqs...

I appreciate the help linking the history together!

Cheers,

Jason

[RBW] Re: One Rivendell to rule them all

2022-08-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
The OP asked the classic "which Riv if you could only have one?" It's not
clear to me whether the OP realizes how little that question has to do with
bicycles or Rivendells and how much that question has to do with people.
There have been a good spectrum of replies, not directly because there's a
broad spectrum of Rivendells, but because there is a broad spectrum of
people who ride these bicycles.

One category of people is the "versatility" group, who would choose a
particular Rivendell model because they can set it up with different
cockpits, different tires, different rack and luggage configurations and
make one bike into many bikes over its life. Another subset of the
versatility group are those with a single Riv build and it does everything
they need to do on a bike. It's a grab and go machine that is down for
whatever. Others have a much more surgical approach to their stable,
having a particular bike optimized for a particular kind of use-case. For
those people, many would first choose "one type of cycling" and then choose
the perfect bike for that one limited use-case.

I'm one of those many-bikes people, and I have several Rivendells. As of
now, I've got a Legolas, Quickbeam, Hillborne, and HubbaHubbaH. I've also
had a Bombadil, Hilsen, two Atlantis', two Rosco Bubbes and a Roadeo. I
have another Roadeo on the way. If I had to limit down to one Rivendell,
and got to fully stock the rest of my stable with other things, maybe I'd
keep the Quickbeam. If I had to limit my stable down to a single bicycle
and it had to be a Rivendell, I'd likely stick with the Hillborne. If I
had to limit my cycling down to a single particular use case, and then pick
an optimized bike for that use case, and it had to be a Rivendell, then I'd
probably choose my forthcoming Roadeo.

[RBW] Re: One Rivendell to rule them all

2022-08-15 Thread Roberta
Jim,

Like you and Emily (three happy Platy riders--mine is 55 Mermaid) at first
I was taken aback by the prices, but I got to test ride the Chev,
Appaloosa, Sam and Atlantis all in my size at the shop before I bought in
2017. For me, it was that one run around the parking on the Appaloosa that
that clinched it (I loved the Atlantis, too, but at that time, it was MUSA
and way out of my budget). So, how much is it worth to me to have NO NECK
PAIN (vs wanting to cry after each ride with my previous bike)?

The joy of being comfortable on a bike and to bike more often and longer
without any pain than I could ever do before is nearly priceless. I bought
the bike for exercise, but it's brought me so much joy than I ever thought
an inanimate object could! Worth every penny!

[RBW] Re: 2021 Homer wheelbase numbers

2022-08-15 Thread Bones
61.5cm Homer (most recent batch) ~118.75cm wheelbase. The Homers have
definitely gotten longer faster than the Sams have. I found considerable
overlap (for my uses) between my Sam and Appaloosa. I no longer have the
Sam but I still have an Appaloosa. I now have a Homer as well. It has Paul
centerpulls and I wouldn't want any other type of brake on this bike. The
blue on this recent batch is out of this world.

 Hello, Rivsters,

Has anyone here measured the wheelbase of their 61.5 cm Homer? I've
been meaning to replace my 59 cm Clem H with a shorter (emphasis on the
*er*) wheelbase-d bike for months now, and only just started actively
looking at options. The wheelbase is the only real complaint I have with
the Clem -- it is way too long to fit on a bus rack, which diminishes a

Given the increase in chainstay length for the 2021 model, I wanted to
check with the group if anyone has measured, or could measure, the
wheelbase of their 61.5 cm bike.

I was originally considering picking up a Sam frame from the next

Re: [RBW] Re: Club Rides On A Racing Platypus

2022-08-15 Thread Max S
Patrick,

This is a deeply and widely explored topic. There are some numbers and
graphs to look at here: https://www.wheelscience.com/pages/aero-v-weight
In my personal experience, deep rims can save me ~10-20 watts, depending on
how fast and where I ride. So, it can get me from 16.5 to 17.0 mph or to
17.5 mph average over a 50 mile ride on our local gravel roads, for
example.
If those rims are carbon, that nets a 1.3-1.5 kg wheelset that is both
aerodynamic AND sturdy. If I try to hit that weight mark with aluminum
rims, I get a less aerodynamic and a flimsier wheelset.
Speaking for myself, the upshot of running deep dish carbon wheels is that
they let me give up an hour of sleep the night before to keep up with my
riding pal... But if you're riding by yourself, and your sleep hygiene is
good, and you're eating right, and you're not checking the local rankings
on various "segments" on Strava, it doesn't make much difference.
Well, no, let me take that back. What I've discovered of late in riding
gravel roads is that half of my aluminum rims have developed dents, whereas
the carbon wheels have not. I'm not a particularly heavy rider and I like
to think I'm a careful rider. But running the same size tires on carbon
wheels seems to not result in the same number of dents. Now this will
probably at some point turn into a chipped / delaminated section on that
carbon rim, but for now, they seem to suffer fewer of those dents.
Carbon frames and forks do save a significant amount of weight – expect
about 2-3 lbs saved over a similarly sized steel frame & fork, especially
from Rivendell. The weight is felt on the hills – about 10 seconds per mile
of climbing at 4-5% gradients, in my experience, but I could be
mis-remembering. It's easy to stick two extra 2-liter soda bottles in your
saddlebag and test the effect quantitatively and qualitatively for yourself.
If the above makes me sound like a carbon apologist, I'll say that all my
bikes have steel frames and forks, and most have aluminum rims. I just
prefer those for now, for a variety of reasons. But sometimes I do ride
carbon wheels and enjoy the looks and the very very slight speed benefits,
and noticeable durability benefits for some aspects of my riding.
