If someone has to have pink fenders, there is this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/265580783485?hash=item3dd5d9277d:g:RqAAAOSwS0diI8T7

I have no affiliation with the sale, but I remembered spotting them while I
have been searching for 2 sets of the old beige SKS fenders that are also
no longer in production.

Best regards,

[RBW] Re: FS: 650B Wheelset (Alex/Deore/Novatec)

2022-04-25 Thread Johnny Alien

If you want to try out some big but very light and supple tires I can throw
in the Continental RaceKing tires that I had mounted to these wheels. I
went to Cliffhanger rims with Deore so I could try out tubeless otherwise I
would have kept these. Very nice wheels that honestly are as light or a
touch lighter than the Cliffhanger set.

[RBW] 1400 front derailers

2022-04-25 Thread Bill Lindsay
On the March 18th email update, Rivendell reported that the container full
of frames would also contain *1400 Front Derailers*. They indicated this
model will work with all their bikes, but they didn't say exactly what it
is, giving it the nickname "skeleton key". I wonder how much space 1,400
front derailers will take up.

For those who don't know what's special about "Rivendell Front Derailers",
it's a combination of a few things:

1. Rivendells typically have a bit more BB drop than most other bikes
2. Rivendell builds often have a small-sized "big" chainring. Like a 42
big ring, or a 38, or a 34!
3. Rivendells typically have a more laid back Seat Tube Angle than most
other bikes

the combination of those three things brings the trailing edge of the front
derailer down close to the chainstays. So close, that in many cases you
flat out can't set up the front derailer "correctly". You have to run it
floating way above the chainrings. For a lot of people, this works just
fine, and some people actually brag about it. When somebody claims that
Combination X is a problem, it's fun to retort "I have Combination X and
it's just fine!"

Anyhow, 650B bikes have less of this problem (because less BB drop).
Still, it's something to think about. I prepared by stocking up on Shimano
CX70 Front Derailers when they existed, and now I'm super stingy with
those. I'm going to give the "skeleton key" FD a look and may buy a few of
those also. As an amateur machinist and maker, I've even dabbled with
making my own Front Derailers.

Or, you can avoid this altogether and run a 1xDrivetrain!

[RBW] It might be even nicer on a Rivendell: 1975 news feature film on bicycle postman in rural Ireland

2022-04-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Cribbed from the CR list but I'm sure will be appreciated here.

https://youtu.be/5k3SY_S7O_M

The only words of the subject I could understand were "No" and "It's bad."
Perhaps he was speaking Gaelic.

27 miles (besides the 3 miles from and back to home) up and down hill in
all weathers on a 50 lb, over geared single speed at age 65. But simple
life (he's a small dairy farmer too) in bucolic if wet country and
apparently very little motor traffic.

A fellow classmate in college about the time this film was made told me of
visiting her grandmother in rural Ireland a few years before, with the
statutory whitewashed, thatched cottage, peat fire, and usual crowd of
untrammeled pigs.

Re: [RBW] 1400 front derailers

2022-04-25 Thread Garth
The reference of a "skeleton key" derailleur is a figure of speech, dontcha
know ?
You betcha it is .
Referring to "one derailleur suitable for everything" . like a master
key to open any lock, so to speak. The "everything" in this case refers to
the bikes Riv designs, contracts, and configures for customers.

I emailed Grant a while ago about FD's and he mentioned the incoming FD was
a model that they had sold before, that took 48-50 tooth rings. So if
anyone has a good memory or archive it would reveal itself. So no, it won't
be some odd doohickey to move the chain around !

Re: [RBW] 1400 front derailers

2022-04-25 Thread E. Ricky Creek

It is probably some version of the IRD sub compact.

My last apartment had a side door that took a skeleton key. I had a box of
old keys and one worked on that door. I found another similar key and filed
it down to work, too. So that became the door we always used, because why
wouldn't I? This was just a few years ago.

exactly what it is, giving it the nickname "skeleton key". I wonder how
much space 1,400 front derailers will take up.

For those who don't know what's special about "Rivendell Front
Derailers", it's a combination of a few things:

 1. Rivendells typically have a bit more BB drop than most other bikes
 2. Rivendell builds often have a small-sized "big" chainring. Like a
 42 big ring, or a 38, or a 34!
 3. Rivendells typically have a more laid back Seat Tube Angle than most
 other bikes

the combination of those three things brings the trailing edge of the
front derailer down close to the chainstays. So close, that in many cases
you flat out can't set up the front derailer "correctly". You have to run
it floating way above the chainrings. For a lot of people, this works
 just
fine, and some people actually brag about it. When somebody claims that
Combination X is a problem, it's fun to retort "I have Combination X and
 it's just fine!"

Anyhow, 650B bikes have less of this problem (because less BB drop).
Still, it's something to think about. I prepared by stocking up on
 Shimano
CX70 Front Derailers when they existed, and now I'm super stingy with
those. I'm going to give the "skeleton key" FD a look and may buy a few
 of
those also. As an amateur machinist and maker, I've even dabbled with
 making my own Front Derailers.

Or, you can avoid this altogether and run a 1xDrivetrain!

one more thing to note, check the geo specs. While this is a 61cm, the
TT is relatively short, at 59cm, so it fits more like a 59. At least for
 me.

[RBW] Platypus/Clem sizing

2022-04-25 Thread 'Keith Swanson' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have a 52 Clem L that feels a bit large for me and am trying to decide
whether to replace it with a 50 Platypus or a 45 Clem L (If anyone has a 50
Cheviot frame in silver or blue I would be interested). Does anyone know
if there's much of a difference between the two sizes? The 52 Clementine I
test rode felt much different than the one I have now.

[RBW] Re: Platypus/Clem sizing

2022-04-25 Thread Joe Bernard
This is strictly hearsay because the geometry charts are gone and my memory
skills are questionable but I'll start here: the current Clem L is crazy
longer in the effective toptube than the originals. I believe the 52 is now
65cm ETT and the 45 is 62cm ETT. If I recall correctly - maybe Leah can
help us here - the 55 Platypus is about 62cm ETT, matching the 45 Clem L. I
have it this way in my head because I have a 79PBH and concluded I would
ride a 45 Clem (current) and 55 Platy.

Conclusion? Don't listen to me, call Riv!
