[RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-17 Thread Garth
Hey George .. Among my recent bag pursuits which included all things
Carradice, the standard Bagman Sport(saddle loop dependent) is as available
the Expedition and the QR versions. Perennial Cycles in MN, Britishcycle in
OR, and Ben's Cycle in WI all have it in stock in the USA, not to mention
the plethora of UK vendors.

For George and/or Anyone Else . how much open seat rail space does the
Bagman clamp require, in millimeters ?

What prevents/minimizes the bags from swaying laterally when cornering,
sprinting, mashing, thrashing, whaling ... you know throwing all
thought to the wind in playful abandon ? Since the answer depends on how
heavy the load, for reference I'm talking a lighter/smaller bag like a
Barley or Lightweight Audax loaded with whatever you carry ?

The Nelson's lateral shape keeps things as well forward as possible. I got
it for a ridiculously light ride across the country (credit card camping

Re: [RBW] Re: If you want to see someone's Clem L this is the thread

2022-04-17 Thread Johnny Alien
The bear traps are really nice. There is something about the look of them
that really appealed to be and the options for some color is a huge plus.
They grip super well but also not to the extent that moving the foot is
difficult. My normal pedals have pins that are so super grippy that you are
practically locked in when you put your foot down. Its nice until you want
to slightly adjust and then you realize that sometimes things can be too
grippy. The bear traps are much better in that regard. I never tried the
Bubbly ones but they do look pretty similar. I prefer the rounded off look
of the bear traps (plus they are a touch cheaper which is always a plus).

There are three stems similar to that new Blue Lug stem. The blue lug one
(of course), the new Rivendell IRD stem, and the Nitto MT-54S. They are all
tig welded steel.

I have experience with the two nitto models (Blue Lug and MT) but have not
held or seen the new Rivendell version. With that in mind this is what I
would suggest with them.

   - If you need to clamp onto 31.8 bars then the Rivendell option is the
   only choice
   - If you need to really raise the bars up then the Rivendell option is
the best choice. The angle is larger and the stem length is much greater
   than the other two
   - If you need a shorter extension then the Rivendell and Blue Lug
options are the best bet. I would lean toward the Blue Lug one as it has
more size options however if you need the extra height then pick the
   Rivendell
   - The Nitto MT is the lightest. That's because the stem length is low.
If you don't need that extra length or a shorter extension and are OK with
the dull color this is a great option
   - The nicest looking of the bunch (IMO) is the Blue Lug version. Its not
a TON better than the MT but it IS nicer and its the only one that gives
   you a color choice
   - The Blue Lug allows you to change the stem cap so you can add some
flair. It looks like the Rivendell model should as well but I can't confirm
   that. The MT does not

Indeed I am looking for a 58cm Yves Gomez, and I am still looking. My
offer stands at $1000 for a frame+fork+headset. My 52 is claimed, and
we're now negotiating whether I keep my build kit or sell the 52 complete.
If I can find a 58, I'll want to keep my build kit. Let me know if you've
got one.

If the Rivendell model was available when I ordered this I may have went
with it to get the 65 wide Toscos that only have a 31.8 clamp but I am not
sure that it would have worked out for me based on the length. I am not
sure I could get them low enough. I think that Riv stem and 65 Toscos is
going to be a powerhouse combo though.

Clems are the heros of the Rivendell line. I was just discussing this

whatever you want to it; it will never complain. Clems are good-natured

Re: [RBW] Re: Crust Clydesdale Forks and Rivs

2022-04-17 Thread luckyturnip
I *really* want a Clydesdale fork. I had a bike in mind to put it on, but now
that they’re right in front of me, I can’t decide which to buy. I can only
afford one. My current bike has a 1” steerer (Klunker bike). But it’s an
expensive enough purchase that maybe it makes more sense to get the 1 1/8” for
more applications, and get a different bike…
I wouldn’t put it on my Atlantis personally because I think it would be too
heavy.

Re: [RBW] WTB: Analog Cycles Fifth Season Squall Sack

2022-04-17 Thread Christopher Wiggins
Hello!
When ordering Squall Sacks (or any Fifth Season bag) I’m limited to the
fabric that the maker has on hand. Most of the colors were not available
at the time of ordering, and there was no eta on when they would be back in
stock. I took the best options that were available to me at that time.
I am enjoying Naples, but I understand. I wouldn’t want to move back to my
home town either.
Thanks!

2022-04-17 Thread Jason Fuller
Platypus has more generous clearance than the Hillborne - I think the Platy
uses the same fork crown as the Atlantis, though I'm not 100%. Platy will
fit 48's and fenders, while the Hillborne stops at 42's and fenders.
Without fenders its more like 55 vs. 48mm max

Re: [RBW] Do the Sam Hillborne and Platypus have the same clearances?

2022-04-17 Thread Jon Dukeman
Ray
I have a 58 Canti Sam & a 55 Platty.
I run 700x 40C knobbys on the Sam and sometimes Little Big Ben's. I've run
Schwalbe g-one alrounders too all about 40mm wide or 1.5"
The 55 Platty I run 28 x 2 Schwalbe G1 extra grip knobbys or sometimes
Schwalbe Big Bens
Each about 50 mm wide.
Issues with clearance is at the chain stays on the Sam trying to fit the
28x 2s
My best answer is the 700C tires on the Sam will fit on the Platty but my
tires on the Platty will not clear
the 700C Sam. 700c & 28 are interchangeable.
I have v brakes on the Platty. Cantilevers on the Sam. No fenders.
I have not tried to interchange tires I just took measurements at the chain
stays.
Hope this helps.
Jon

2022-04-17 Thread Joe Mullins
Looking at the construction I’d say it should safely hold well over 65 lbs
although my pup is about reaching the max size that can comfortably fit in
there. I’d say it’s designed for medium sized dogs and a full size Labrador is
about as big as you’d want to ride in there.

 Hi Max, I have a Clydesdale fork and a 10lb dog. It's perfect. 45lbs
