Re: [RBW] Re: Dealing with wind

2022-03-16 Thread Ryan
Hah! That reminds me of my own experience in the early 90's when my son was
a toddler and I was in my much fitter early forties. I had my hot-rod
Cannondale M2000 mountain bike and the excellent Burley D'Lite trailer to
haul my son, picnic , and paraphernalia required for a small child. One of
our favorite trips was out to Fort Whyte Nature preserve in the southwest
part of Winnipeg. Fort Whyte is still there , but the surrounding area is
now developed. They have since paved over Paradise; but back when we rode
out there in the 90's , the 5 or 6 miles south of Assiniboine Park were
rural with horse farms and a mixture of gravel and hard-packed road leading
to Fort Whyte. In the spring and summer I would be riding into a stiff
headwind. If I was lucky, after several hours at the little museum, a
picnic , and time for Marston in the playground, I would get a nice push
home. It was a workout. Like you, I remember our wanderings to Fort Whyte
and other destinations on that Cannondale hauling the trailer with great
fondness, since I didn't and don't own a car and I lived downtown. Which
did have child-friendly spaces such as the Forks and museums and small
parks not too far from where I lived.

I ask those of you who often ride in high winds: How do you deal with
strong headwinds when you are sitting bolt upright, particularly if you
 are
 riding a Quickbeam or Uno?

Winds require more power, so a bolt upright position is tiring both
because of wind resistance, and because an insufficient angle between
 torso
and hips means it's hard to generate torque -- or so I've always found.

So if you are riding a bike set up like this one, how do you deal with
 strong headwinds?

Here in Albuquerque we are entering Spring Wind season -- ABQ is breezy
year round, in fact -- which can start as early as late February and last
through June in a bad year; but routine W and SW winds of 20 mph with
 gusts
to 40 not uncommon are common from late March through May.

When I started riding fixed a great deal back about the turn of the
20th century I found headwinds hugely annoying, and it took me several
years to overcome the biggest handicap, a mental one, by, basically,
reducing my expectations. You learn to accept riding at half speed in
 order
to maintain sustainable levels of exertion.

But I also fine tuned my bikes' setup and my riding position so that I
can ride in the hooks of drop bars for several miles at a stretch, and I
certainly find that riding low makes a huge difference to reducing the
wind's force and to making it easier to generate pedal force.

Now, 67, I've finally conceded the need to compensate for failing
strength with newfangled technology, and when a ride involves headwinds I
have a choice of drivetrains with multiple gears you can shift from the
saddle. The Matthews 1 has a 2X10 derailleur system, Matthews 2 has the
72"/65"/56" hub gear -- 65" is just right for long shallow inclines and
modest headwinds on the flat, but I occasionaly find the 56" low a relief
for strong winds even on flat surfaces; and the 1999 Joe Starck gofast
 will
God willing [rims and hubs sent off to Earle Young last Frid

[RBW] Re: Share some pictures: Raw steel bikes

2022-03-16 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks, Robert! Is this totally raw or is it raw with a clear coat and the
patina is under the clear? I ask because I'd figure a raw steel frame would
weather more quickly that the time frame you mention. I am prepared to be
wrong about this assumption!

[RBW] Re: Share some pictures: Raw steel bikes

2022-03-16 Thread Robert Hakim
My pleasure Eric!
It is completely raw, but living in the American West, the patina has
matured slowly. It has been on the back of the car next to the ocean, in
the rain multiple times, I spent a few months with family in humid
Virginia, and I can't even tell you how many creek crossings. The majority
of the rust is likely from being stored in a garage during my time in Va.
As cool as the finish is, I think it is making me subconsciously feel like
the bike is 'old' or 'worn out'. Looking back through the pictures I think,
for my tastes anyways, I should have curtailed the development of the rust
a little while ago, hence the desire to get it painted. Though sometimes it
is fun to show up at the trailhead with a rat bike, surrounded by all the
modern carbon enduro bikes and their loud graphics.

Cheers,
Robert

 Hi Eric,

Here is a photo of my 1980 Trek mystery model in a pewter color. I know
it's not quite raw steel, but it's fun to imagine what's underneath and
consider what makes steel more exciting than steel-colored paint.

 Cheers,

I’ve been commuting until it’s below 30ish degrees. Sort rides though.

In Philadlelphia, I found a local group going on a Full Moon ride Friday
night, and it should be a perfect night. The rest of the weekend : “French
kiss.”

I know it’s a bit warmer here but hopefully you’ll get out, too. Lovely
Saluki.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dealing with wind

2022-03-16 Thread Nick Payne
I grew up in Perth, Western Australia, which is certainly the windiest city
in Australia and probably somewhere up there on a world basis (I think
Wellington in New Zealand is generally regarded as taking the prize for
that). During late summer and autumn in Perth, we often get strong easterly
winds in the morning, gradually dying away, and then strong south-westerly
winds in the afternoon. I can vividly recall one particular job I had for a
couple of years where the relative location of home and work meant that I
was plugging into the easterlies when riding to work in the morning, and
into the south-westerlies when riding home in the afternoon.

Even the pedestrians have problems with the wind in Perth. The high rise
buildings in the city centre create a wind tunnel, and it's not that
uncommon for pedestrians to be blown off their feet.

Nick

[RBW] Flat Pedal Users: Favorite size/shape?

2022-03-16 Thread John Bokman
Hi all.
I've been riding VP Vice pedals for a few years now. It took a long while
(aprx. a year) to get used to riding flats, coming from Speedplay Frogs.
Finally, it took, and I'm happy on the flats for my commuter (Sam Hill).

However, the Vice have developed play, rattle a bit, and generally feel
gritty, and I have been experimenting with different ideas. I've recently
used the old MKS Touring pedals, and RMX sneaker pedals. These are okay,
but what I've discovered is that for my riding, flats without connection
(no clips/straps, powergrips) feel better underfoot with a fairly large
platform, and low stack height, like the Vice. And yet I know many of you
enjoy the Riv-approved MKS Gamma, lambda, and Allways models. All of these
appear to be taller, and all are narrower than the vice. And yet...I
wonder: how big is big enough? I'm not racing downhill, fully padded and
helmeted, on a double boinger, like my neice. I just ride my bike here and
there, long distances, when time allows.

I always want to support Riv when possible. But I am looking at many other
pedals that Riv does not sell. What are some of your favorites, and why?
For what use? If you use the aforementioned MKS pedals, what is your
opinion of them? Do you like the size/shape? I'm wondering if the length of
the pedal is more important than the width. The Gamma, Lambda, and Allways,
for instance, are all longer than the Vice, while being slimmer.

Thanks.
John

Re: [RBW] Flat Pedal Users: Favorite size/shape?

2022-03-16 Thread Jay Lonner
I really, really like the Catalyst pedals from Pedaling Innovations:

https://pedalinginnovations.com/

Thin, long, wide, grippy – they check all the boxes for me. I ride wearing
either Vans, Chucks, or Keens, none of which offer much support (esp. the
Chucks) and there’s enough real estate on the pedal to keep me comfortable all
day. I’ve tried all the options that Riv sells and have replaced them with
Catalysts, with the exception of my Bike Friday where I use MKS rinko pedals
for ease of packing:

https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/pedals/mks-allways-pedals-ezy-superior-rinko-2/

These are also great, esp. for their intended application, but the Catalysts
are just 👨‍🍳 😘👌

Re: [RBW] Flat Pedal Users: Favorite size/shape?

2022-03-16 Thread Damien
I have been using Blackspire Sub Four pedals on my Bombora, and SimWorks
Bubbly Pedals on my Sam. Both are pretty great and I'd recommend. The
Blackspire pedals are super grippy - almost too grippy? Whatever, I
don't hate it and they do feel really nice when ripping around on trails.
The SimWorks pedals are just really pretty (got them in Copper). Not as
grippy but honestly a good amount of grip for my purposes with the Sam, and
a nice platform. Look a bit chunky, but I'm over it and actually enjoy the
way they look.

I had MKS Lambdas before - they're ok. They have a nice platform but my
Vans/Chucks would slip a bit on them. Not sure if you can put pins in them,
but you may not need/want them. For what it's worth, my wife absolutely
hates these pedals. I think it's because she has shinned herself more with
these pedals than any others.

I have another bike coming and I may try some composite pedals - Kona Wah
Wahs or something like that.

Re: [RBW] Where in the world has your Riv been?

2022-03-16 Thread John Rinker
A well-traveled Riv, Doug! Love the firetruck shot as the red and
Soviet-MIG green/blue is a nice contrast. Is Dante's View in Death Valley
perchance? Also a very nice shot. Thanks for sharing. Our 'Riv's of the
World map is growing.

Cheers,
John

[RBW] Re: Flat Pedal Users: Favorite size/shape?

2022-03-16 Thread Ed Carolipio
The Vice's are my favorite flat pedals so you've already identified the
Superior Option. My impressions on other flat pedals I have now:

   - MKS Lambda - put these on my "street" bikes for the reflectors, the
bling, and to avoid the pedals rashes but as others have mentioned they
could slip when wet or with certain outsoles.
   - MKS Grip Monarch - definitely superior to the Lambdas with a broader,
more square platform and metal pins while still housing reflectors. I'd
recommend these pedals if you want to shop at Riv. (Currently in stock in
Silver and Black. Get a black and a silver one to create Panda/Adnap
   versions.)
   - MKS RMX Sneaker pedals - Only reason to get them is they're silver.
I'd take the Clem plastic pedals (VP-538) for "sneaker pedals" over these.
   - iSSi Thumps with Molded Pins - a great value option for a low profile,
large platform, composite pedal. Molded pins are tall so grip is good even
in the wet but pedal rash isn't too bad since the pins are plastic.
Definitely feel stiffer than the venerable VP-538.
