Re: [RBW] Re: Clem L For Sale

2022-02-08 Thread Doug H.
Good morning Yaheen,
My PayPal email is dhansford1...@gmail.com
I would like to get the bike packed for shipping prior to payment if that
works for you. I should be able to get it done by Wednesday evening at the
latest. I'll buy shipping materials today and start on it. Could you give
me the shipping address so that I can go ahead and buy the shipping label?
Thanks,
Doug

[RBW] Re: BikeSnobNYC, 2022 Five Boro NYC Bike tour promo video on Platypus. Reviews of prior tours requested.

2022-02-08 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
+1 on all the advice given so far. It's definitely worth it.

I would add that if you're like me and don't really feel comfortable in big
crowds, don't hesitate to stop at bars/coffee shops for a
refreshment/rest. The rest stops were overwhelming-ish for me and stopping
at a cafe with outdoor seating was more relaxing (while watching all the
riders go by :-)

DIY snacking is better than waiting in big lineups.

DON'T take the ferry back at the end, absolutely park at the finish.

Done with a friend is great. Done with a small group is great. Trying to
do it with a big group was challenging according to friends of mine.

ADVENTURE!

Firth and Wilson Transport Cycles -> transportcycle.com

Repairs sometimes cost more than new so check first, but I do understand
attachment to old parts.

I had them build me up a Honey B-68 from parts including a chromed B-68
frame that I sent them with a Honey B-67 cover. I call it a B-678
Frankensaddle. Not the cheapest saddle on the planet.

[RBW] Re: Clem or other chainstay protection

2022-02-08 Thread RichS
Richard,

As Ben noted, cloth and twine is "bulletproof" chain stay protection. One
caveat though: if you ever decide to remove it, the adhesive quality of
cloth hbar tape has the ability to remove paint (ask me how I know!). Riv
sells these chain stay protectors - currently out of stock - and other
retailers also sell them in colors and I believe leather as well. They're
tricky to install. I've only applied the clear versions. Proceed slowly
lest you trap air bubbles between the stay and the protector. Clean the
chain stay thoroughly; a pin is somewhat helpful to remove any bubbles;
ideally, avoid them if you can.

Re: [RBW] Brooks saddle repairs

2022-02-08 Thread Joe Mullins
Has anyone ever repaired an old old B-17 with a tear in the leather? After
sitting for nearly 20 years, I took my fathers old Brooks from 1975, threw some
Proofide on it and began using it. Unfortunately it was still totally dried out
deep within and it tore slightly right where the sit bone lands. I’d love to be
able to keep using it if it can be repaired! Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Clem or other chainstay protection

2022-02-08 Thread Ryan
It's interesting that on Riv's Custom page they offer a chainstay slap
guard for a $50.00 upcharge...but don't think it's really required.

https://www.rivbike.com/products/custom-framesets

Looked at my 3 Rivendells...and nope, nothing to see there. I don't recall
this option ever coming up on my last two customs...and I'm not fussing
about it too much.

So, Joe, did you have to request the 3M wrapping specifically?

2022-02-08 Thread lconley
My Rivendell Custom came with extensive clear film over the chain stay. It
is basically invisible, didn't know it was there until I was working on it
real close up one day and saw the edge lines. Most of my other Rivendells
came with a single clear piece of film like what they sell. I tried to go
old school and get my stays chrome plated but that was a no-go with Grant.
The only Rivendell complete that I ever purchased has a clear chainstay
protector that is dying of old age and twine wrapped kickstand. Interesting
thing about the kickstand is that the twine is not where the crank contacts
the kickstand, must have come from another bike.

You can, or could, get NOS steel chainstay protectors a few years ago on
eBay. I found a couple from a US seller.

The closest thing I found just now on a quick search is this, UK and
aluminum:

https://www.velobitz.co.uk/chainstay-protectors/velobitz-vintage-retro-plain-aluminium-chainstay-protector-self-adhesive

Long ago (I was 16 or so) when a heavy 1/8" chain on a smallish ring and
cogs with lightly sprung derailleur cage would bounce on the stay over
bumps, I cut a "silver" cs protector out of the "tinned" inside of a tin
can, with tabs on each end to bolt it under the stay, It looked good (or
so I thought then) and worked well.

My 2015 Sam came with a clear protector too that is nearly invisible. When
I wanted something similar for my Surly I purchased one of these Wheels
Manufacturing clear chainstay protectors off eBay. Looks excellent. Now,
the chainstays on the Sam (463 mm and on the Surly 450 mm) are nowhere near
the length of those on the newer Rivs, so that is to be taken info
consideration.

2022-02-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Ryan,

My experience is just like Laing's, the whole chainstay is wrapped and I
didn't notice for months.

What I believe Grant means by "slap guard" is those old timey braze-ons
touring bikes used to have that you would stretch a piece of leather
between. He's not a stickler for paint staying pretty and probably thinks
the clear stuff isn't necessary, either.*

*In fact he'd probably be appalled at how pristine my custom still is after
a year and a half. I don't like scratches! 😬

I want that Glorius but I'd be so tempted to ship it straight to Joe
Bell for very expensive paint. Probably not the best idea! 😜 💸💸💸

The Athens Clem L is Doug H's, I think he sold it this morning.

[RBW] Re: Clem or other chainstay protection

2022-02-08 Thread Ryan
Oops...the fingernail test reveals that my 2001 Road and 2016 Mixte do have
that clear protector you and Laing are talking about. They are Joe Bell
paint jobs The allrounder is um...rather dusty, so I'm not going there.
That was a Waterford which may or may not have the clear wrap...there is
clear wrap over the "handcrafted in Waterford Wisconsin" on the non-drive
side chainstay

Oh Wow! Barn find???

Paint around the head lugs looks a little rough, like some sort of rust

cream accents.

Definitely an orphan in need of a good home

2022-02-08 Thread Joe Bernard
It's one of the clearcoat-over-raw frames Riv did in the later '00s. That
gave up on it for exactly the reason you state, the steel starts to rust
under the coat and freaks people out. I briefly owned a Bombadil with this
and didn't like it (the finish) much, I sold it to listmember Jason. He
painted it!

This one is a stunner. I love the look of the raw steel frames especially
with brass brazing... I don't mind the look of the rusty brown though I
would worry about corrosion and maintenance of course.

Probably pretty similar to a Betty Foy 52 as thats the model that came out
after the Glorius and also used 650B wheels. Rivendell says 70-81 for the
BF in the 52 size.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem or other chainstay protection

2022-02-08 Thread Richard Rose
My Clem came with a single layer of clear material protection. Hard to see but
it is there. Seems inadequate though? That is a long chain & I imagine it might
sag quite a bit at times. In addition the cable running below the stay nearly
hugs the stay. On other bikes I have experience paint scuffing from similarly
close cables. Don’t get me wrong - I know bikes that get ridden will not remain
perfect. But an extra layer of clear protection cannot hurt.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem or other chainstay protection

2022-02-08 Thread Nick Payne
My experience is that the clear stick-on plastic chainstay protection lasts
for decades without visible deterioration. My late 90s Riv custom came with
one installed, and it's still in place without visible damage - in fact
it's very hard to see unless you look closely. And on my Bleriot, as well
as chainstay protection, I also fitted some protection along the top tube,
because the bare brake cable runs at about 2 o'clock along there and my leg
presses it into the tube whenever I stop at an intersection. So I protected
the paintwork shortly after I started riding the bike (about 15 years ago)
by sticking some transparent plastic along the top tube where the cable
would rub, and it similarly is pretty much invisible unless I point it out
to people.

I didn't buy the stick-on frame protector kits that bike shops sell. I went
to a motorbike shop and bought several sheets of the 3M film intended for
paint protection (each sheet was about 12" x 15") and cut the sizes and
shapes I wanted from that. I still have a couple of the sheets left,
waiting to be used.

Nick
