Although you really should shift into the small cog before trying to rest
that chain (as I was reminded this afternoon when I did a quixotic wheel
swap to avoid having a blowout on my rear tire on a trip to downtown
Oakland to pay my water bill). If the chain isn't lined up with the inside
of the seat stay, said chain may pop right back off.

I'd likely shrug my shoulders and smile.

I put myself in the "other" shoes, so to speak. From that position, fully
aware of the comedic situation I apparently now find myself playing
"both".I "return" to where I never left.

So where's the offense, the call for justice, equality and such ?

Nowhere.

Now what ?

I shrug my shoulders and laugh, smile .

[RBW] USPS Crazyness

2021-06-28 Thread David Person
Crazy things are going on at USPS. This past week I had two packages
shipped to me via USPS. One from San Diego, CA and the other from Chico,
CA. I live just outside Los Angeles and both packages were due to arrive 3
days after being shipped. The package from San Diego made it to the USPS
distribution center about 25 miles from my home in one day, which delivery
expected the next day. The next update had it in Macon, GA. I didn't
receive it till 4 days later. The package from Chico was supposed to be
here this past Saturday, but has been routed thru Birmingham, AL. Who know
when I'll see that one. It's no wonder they are losing money, I how they
get their act together.

I'm probably pre-conditioned and biased, but $3.5k seems like a good deal
for a nice complete bike like an Appaloosa. WorldTour road bikes are $8k
and up (>$12k for a few
,
*excluding* fancy wheels), and World Cup mountain bikes are similarly priced
. Looking
at the other end of the spectrum, the cheap (and I don't mean inexpensive)
bike-shaped objects sold at Target and Walmart are just wasteful
expenditures of natural resources that are analogous to Harbor Freight and
Old Navy stuff – good enough in a pinch, but wouldn't want to use them
long-term.

Looking at the items themselves, bicycles are useful devices whereas
jewelry is mostly for show. In addition, a bicycle like an Appaloosa, if
well cared for and properly maintained, will likely last for decades.
Amortized over such a long period, even including replacing consumables,
$3.5k is an absolutely steal. And we haven't gone into the physical and
mental healthful aspects that riding a bicycle can bring, nor the fact that
if you use a bicycle for short trips, you're effectively extending the
useful life of your car and helping keep climate change at bay.

Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world —

[RBW] Re: Comebacks for when people think your bikes cost too much

2021-06-28 Thread aeroperf

The only people who have ever asked the price were fellow bicyclists. They
usually preface the question with “Nice bike!”
I note that most ride carbon frames, and don’t bat an eye because their
bikes typically cost more.
And I only think they asked because they recognize that it is a modern
lugged steel bike.

It is an interesting point, however. I’ve become well acquainted with the
owner of an LBS, who has an RB-1.
His comment - “The boomers come in here and drop 2, 3, 4 grand on a bike.
They want carbon. They want Ultegra. I’m glad to sell it to them, if I
have it.”

Well-meaning loved ones know that I owned a Lotus 7 sports car for 30
years. “I sold the Lotus and bought a bike” would suffice.

2021-06-28 Thread Kushan
Thank you all for the interesting perspectives. Keep'em coming.

I agree that how we spend the money is our business and don't need
validation from anyone else. However things always get interesting in a
family like mine with boundary issues when it comes to cost of things (the
first things my uncles, aunts, and cousins asked me when we got our first
home or get a new job was "how much?" :) ).

I think the biggest surprise for me was that there was the lack of similar
to my wife's similarly priced jewelary. As a culture, we have accepted cost
of things like cars, vacations, jewelry, fancy dinners. Even the simple
analysis will concede that you get a lot of value out of a good bike. But
most people,, unless you're a cyslist yourself, still think of bikes as
kids plaything (as opposed to a form of recreation or transportation) and
so anything above $1k triggers a reaction.

With all respect to your wife's taste in jewelry, I just can't get past the
fact that people question spending a few thousand dollars on a complex and
immensely useful machine like a bike, but don't bat an eye and spending
that kind of money on a few grams of stone and metal that has no moving
parts and offers no function beyond being an accessory. What a wild
society we are a part of!

I would just counter that this is what a bike costs if you want dependable,
quality parts made by fairly paid people - and that in the long run, it'll
be a good deal, because it's made to last. (Plus it has super high resale
value but I prefer not to think about selling!)

Re: [RBW] Ride Quality Difference between the Atlantis and Clem H?

2021-06-28 Thread Jim Whorton
Great question and thread. I've been wondering the same thing. While I
appreciate Riv's insistence on keeping stuff like frame weights and tube
specs in the background, I have wondered what kind of difference I'd feel
between the 59cm Clem H that I have now and an Atlantis. We had a great
Riv dealer here in Rochester for a while, but Yellow Haus has closed,
unfortunately, so a test ride is unlikely.

Like Joe and Jason, I've found the Clem rides really nicely with a load.

Most people understand the concept of a "mid-life crisis car". I can buy
10 bikes for the price of the "crisis" car, which I will never buy, so I
don't feel too bad. Yes, it is non-essential to buy such a "fancy" bike,
but it is used and has big contributions to my health and well being.

[RBW] Re: Comebacks for when people think your bikes cost too much

2021-06-28 Thread velomann
There are so many possible comebacks...

As others have pointed out, f you're not a bike person, that world is a
different planet for you, as evidenced by transportation planners and
politicians who can't see beyond bikes as toys that some adults apparently
haven't outgrown.

I realize this doesn't apply universally, but for me if I felt the need to
justify the costs (I don't), it would go something like this. there's four
of us living in our home and we've chosen to own one car. I ride
everywhere. AAA estimates the cost of owning a car (NOT counting the
purchase price) at about $800/month, which includes insurance, fuel,
maintenance, depreciation, licensing, etc. And that does not count the
health care cost incurred by people who live a sedentary lifestyle. I'm 61
years old, weigh the same as I did 30 years ago, my resting heart rate is
in the low 50s, and I spent zero on prescription drugs last year. It's not
all about the bike, but a lot of it is. And every time I ride I smile.
Every. Time. Which from what I can see is not the experience of most of the
drivers around me.
Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy a bike and that's pretty close.

There's no integrated stand (Grant would have a field day with this) so
this is used to support the bike sans rider. But your idea is actually
pretty brilliant, except for the carbon monoxide part I guess?

2021-06-28 Thread Jeffrey Arita
I 100% agree with Joel Stern - better to simply not state how much it
cost. Cost, like many things, is relative. What is inexpensive for some
is extravagant for others. Keep the cost private.

[RBW] Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-28 Thread Damien
So here's the situation. I've got a super hot lead on an orange 51
Appaloosa, but I'm already deep in it with a sage 51 canti Sam. Initially,
when I was looking at these bikes, I was torn between the two. I ultimately
leaned Sam because at the time I liked the colour and it was more
available. Well, things change I guess! I'm more seriously entertaining a
move to the Appaloosa because:

   - Sweet long chainstays
   - Can carry more (?? Is this true??)
   - Will likely work better for me with upright bars (Sam felt too cramped
   for me with Albas)
   - Better tire clearance for fattish knubblies or fatter tires + fenderage

What I would love to do here is tap the forum's collective wisdom to see if
the grass is really greener. Has anyone made the move from Sam to
Appaloosa, or vice versa? What were your feelings? What did you miss on the
old bike when you made the move? What did you love about the new bike that
the old bike couldn't live up to?

I'm approaching this a bit more cautiously since I already regret selling
another Riv I owned (Roadini - my regret is well documented, I believe).
That said, I imagine I'll need to act fast to get the bike before someone
snags it. In a perfect world I'd keep both, but we all know the world isn't
perfect, and I do have to live within the very real constraints imposed
upon me by my lovely partner who for some reason isn't cool with me having
umpteen bikes.

Anyways, enough of my incessant rambling. Thank you for reading and helping
to encourage my hobby of buying bikes then selling then replacing then
modifying then selling then replacing then buying then crying then selling
then complaining then... (and so on and so forth).

[RBW] Re: Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Clearly you need both. The Samuel Hillborne should be set up with drop
bars and road tires, and should be your all-road machine. A Joe Appaloosa
with much wider tires and Albatross bars would be a great complement to
that Hillborne. The one you discard from your stable is the one you would
never ride. Those two bikes are very different bikes. You need them both,
unless your cycling activities are a single, focused kind of activity. It
would be a stretch to build out a Hillborne trying to make it be an
Appaloosa. It would be a stretch to build out an Appaloosa with skinny
tires and drop bars and try to make it into more of a sporty road bike.

[RBW] Re: Comebacks for when people think your bikes cost too much

2021-06-28 Thread A. Douglas M.

This is such an interesting topic from a sociological perspective.

The idea that we don’t want to talk about costs with others has always
confused me. My wife says it’s because people make judgments about others,
but who cares?

Ultimately, it’s a conversation about the application of subjective values.
Do Rivendells cost a lot? To me, with my income, yes. To others with
theirs, no. Do I think they’re a great bargain? Totally. Do I care if
someone thinks I spent too much? No. Unless I overpaid out of ignorance,
but that’s really my own fault.

I wouldn’t want a comeback for someone having a different opinion of value
than me. It’s one of the great things about people. We value things
differently. Even people spending the same amount on a specialized carbon
bike would think were silly for spending that much on a heavy steel bike.
And what do we think of their purchase?

Did you know some people don’t like Brussels sprouts? I can’t believe it
either.

Best,

Aaron in El Paso

other nice presents. She is getting me an Appaloosa built and I got her
something she really wanted in the jewelry department (of 20-30% higher
 value than the bike).

We are both financially responsible people, don't live lavishly, and
can afford both items. However, the reactions of the friends and family
 who
hear about our gifts and their values have been somewhat puzzling for me.
While no one has given a second thought to the price of the jewelry, the
reactions on the bike have almost universally been that of astonishment.
And these are from people who know me well, know I enjoy cycling, and that
I only have one bike right now which I am planning to sell when the new
 one
 arrives.

So that got me thinking, I can't be the only one who has experienced
this. What are some other similar stories? More importantly, what do you
say to a well-meaning loved one when they ask things like "$3500 for a
bike?" and "but isn't your current bike orange too?"

2021-06-28 Thread dougP
When I'm asked the "how much it costs?" question by non-bike people, my
response is "...oh, are you interested in getting one?..." If the answer
is "no", my rude response is "then it doesn't matter". It's curt enough to
end the conversation. I recall the old adage about someone who knows the
price of everything but the value of nothing.

[RBW] Re: FS: PARTS & ACCESSORIES

2021-06-28 Thread Peter Adler
FYI: I rode Conti Top Touring 2000s in 700x32 for years; they're utterly
indestructable, and much lighter and better riding than the Top Contacts
with which Continental replaced them. I didn't switch to luxo lightweight
tires (Soma New Express, then a pair of much heavier Panaracer prototypes I
got at a Riv yard sale, now Gravel King slicks) until I'd burned through my
entire stash of the Top Tourings and resigned myself to tires someone was
still manufacturing. If I hadn't switched to wider+lighter tires already,
I'd buy Gunner's four TT2000s and get 15 years and/or 15K miles out of them.

Somebody buy these.

[RBW] Re: Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-28 Thread Joe Bernard
It's a sellers market right now, which may not be helpful on the Appaloosa
end for you but you'll definitely get decent money for your Hillborne. I've
only ridden the Appa (it's great) so can't compare, but I say get the model
and color you really want.

Re: [RBW] Re: Comebacks for when people think your bikes cost too much

2021-06-28 Thread 'JRStern11' via RBW Owners Bunch
I grew up in metro NY, we always asked what something costs, it was an ok thing
to do. I moved to CT after grad school, then later to MA. That’s when I learned
here it is considered rude to ask what something cost. But a little preface,
‘do you mind if I ask’ goes a long way. Still, I don’t like to talk about cost
of things with those that would not get it.

[RBW] Re: a worthy Bombadil is back on the road at long last...

2021-06-28 Thread 'WilletM' via RBW Owners Bunch

Those fenders actually made it into the final build based on a suggestion
that you (Jason) gave me many months ago as I was contemplating which
direction to go with the frameset. I eventually decided to go "all silver"
or as close to it as I could possibly get, and the Flat 65's from Simworks
were a good match for the 29x2.1 tires that I was planning on using. They
ended up being perfect for the tires, and they didn't take up much room
vertically either. But both front and back fenders were too wide for the
fork blades and seat stays, so I did have to notch them pretty
significantly and then try to keep the notches aligned as I mounted
hardware to the fenders and then the fenders to the frame. Somewhat
shockingly, the notches fit so closely and line up so perfectly that it's
hard to tell they've been modified without shining a flashlight on it.

At $167 shipped for the fenders, I was HIGHLY motivated to get it right the
first time!

Thanks again for your helpful suggestions over the winter. I still have
the Proto-Bombadil built up and it fits my short-legs-long-torso dimensions
better than this one does (mostly due to a different bar/stem choice). So
this one is for Show and the Protovelo is for Go. I couldn't be happier or
more proud of both, as they were bucket list items for a number of years
before I somehow lucked into getting both of them as framesets within less
than a year of each other.

2021-06-28 Thread Chris L
That's a great looking bike!!

I have a Hunqapillar but I still sometimes feel like the Bombadil was
actually THE Riv for me. I don't know if the geometry and tire clearance
would even work for me but something about it speaks to me, and they are
even more rare than Hunqapillars!

My package was from them as well so maybe it’s the Carlsbad Post Office

[RBW] Re: Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-28 Thread brendonoid
The trick is to only sell a bike after you haven't ridden it for five
years. *looks at shed full of bikes*. Works perfectly.

Honestly though I have both and the last 3 years the 2 Appaloosa's (one
crashed then replaced) have been ridden a lot more than the hillbourne. But
that is my preferences, my type of riding, my local terrain, my bike
setups, climate etc etc etc.

On the bright side, it did provide hours and hours and hours of

lots of practice using various dremel attachments and hand files and many
other specialized bike tools in order to fit the fenders under the rack

did turn out better than I had ever hoped for and it is the sort of a bike
that looks even better up close than it does far away.

2021-06-28 Thread Bones
Nice lookin bike; looks fun to ride. You definitely need some bigger tires
though! I once tossed some Mini Motos on my Appaloosa with 50cm Cazaderos.
There was about 2mm between the brake wire and the tire. I was not cool
with that. Maybe a 48mm slick would be ok, but I'd guess that's about the
limit.

[RBW] Re: Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-28 Thread Bones
Have you ridden the long chainstays? If you have, and you like them,
there's a point for the Appaloosa. Sure the Appaloosa can probably carry
more, but do you need to? The *NEW* Appaloosa is definitely better for
upright bars (I had both a 2019 Appaloosa and Hillborne, which were very
similar geometrically). The tire clearance and fenderage is definitely a
big plus for the Appaloosa as well. I have since sold both older bikes and
I have a new Appaloosa and Roadini. I went with a new Appaloosa for all the
reasons you listed. Honestly I don't know what I would do if I could only
pick one bike. I guess I would pick an Appaloosa! But Bill is right, you
need both. Have you considered purchasing some bikes for your partner?
That's what I did. Now if my wife gets on my case I just point out that
*SHE* doesn't need four bikes and to stop counting mine!

Good Luck!

The long chainstays on the Appaloosa are really good and its hard to go
back to shorter chainstays now. All those reasons you listed for trying the
Appaloosa are why I love mine. I sort of feel like you won't ever feel 100%
happy with the Sam.
You SHOULD try both, I agree with Bill, but sometimes practical
considerations do not allow such things.

- Sweet long chainstays
- Can carry more (?? Is this true??)
- Will likely work better for me with upright bars (Sam felt too
cramped for me with Albas)
- Better tire clearance for fattish knubblies or fatter tires +
fenderage

What I would love to do here is tap the forum's collective wisdom to
see if the grass is really greener. Has anyone made the move from Sam to
Appaloosa, or vice versa? What were your feelings? What did you miss on
 the
old bike when you made the move? What did you love about the new bike that
the old bike couldn't live up to?

I'm approaching this a bit more cautiously since I already regret
selling another Riv I owned (Roadini - my regret is well documented, I
believe). That said, I imagine I'll need to act fast to get the bike
 before
someone snags it. In a perfect world I'd keep both, but we all know the
world isn't perfect, and I do have to live within the very real
 constraints
imposed upon me by my lovely partner who for some reason isn't cool with
 me
 having umpteen bikes.

Anyways, enough of my incessant rambling. Thank you for reading and
helping to encourage my hobby of buying bikes then selling then replacing
then modifying then selling then replacing then buying then crying then
selling then complaining then... (and so on and so forth).

[RBW] Re: Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-28 Thread Ed Carolipio
Hi Damien,

I like Bill's response the best - get both - but as a former Appa owner and
having read discussions on these comparisons on the board, here's my
opinion on each of your points:

   - Sweet long chainstays - Likely not something you can sense - I think
chainstays are balanced with other parts of the geometry - but it helps
with heel clearance for rear panniers
   - Can carry more (?? Is this true??) - Sams easily can do "practical"
loads, like a commuter bag or some groceries. Appa and the Atlantis are for
if you plan on hauling far more impractical loads. To be fair, the Appa had
a talent for riding about the same no matter what I was hauling. Can't say
that for the Surly Troll I owned previously, which felt dead unloaded and
didn't come alive until it was absolutely loaded down.
   - Will likely work better for me with upright bars (Sam felt too cramped
for me with Albas) - Might be a discriminator. The Appa was ideal for all
sorts of swept back bars and had that wondrously expansive top tube. That
also made for a larger front triangle so, even at 51 cm, I could run carry
a frame pump and run 24 oz bottles.
   - Better tire clearance for fattish knubblies or fatter tires +
fenderage - Published difference is 6mm. Probably only significant if you
want to run knobbies off-road, and even then it's just to increase your
tire choices (lots of options for knobbies at 27.5 x 2.1, though
manufacturers are offering more options at 650b x 48 for gravel) than the
   extra volume.

No regrets on selling the Appa since I replaced it with two Rivs (a Homer
and a GBW) to cover a broader usage spectrum without having to change over
the bike.
