looks like I'll go with the James gang again for the same for the Riv.

[RBW] Re: Salt Lake City Cycling Question

2021-03-08 Thread Robert Hakim
I'll echo the others- I only find goatheads a real issue in the central and
western parts of the valley, particularly along the Jordan River Trail
corridor. Most of the cycling on Wasatch Blvd and up into the canyons you
won't have much of an issue with them, thought they do appear occasionally.
I never found any near Park City. Good luck with the move!

[RBW] What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Roberta
Riv content: I'll be listing a Riv soon. Lots of us sell bikes.

What is the seller's safety in getting paid with a cashiers check, PayPal,
Zelle, cash, other options? I''ll be listing my complete bike here and on
CL, so likely I'll be selling to a stranger. I'd want to protect myself
again someone taking my bike and then, somehow, I wouldn't get the funds.

When I bought a bike from a list member, we met in person, I paid him with
PayPal, he accepted the money and then I took the bike.

[RBW] Re: What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Hi Roberta!

I don't know anything about seller protection stuff so I'll let others
chime in on that, but the way I've always done it over 20 years here and on
the BOB is the buyer pays for the bike then I ship. I've always bought
stuff this way, too, which can be a little nerve-wracking for the buyer but
this is a small group of folks who've built a lot of trust over the years.
I wouldn't do that on Craigslist as the buyer, but if someone there wants
give you the money to ship just tell them the dollars have to be securely
in your account and cleared first.

The easiest for me is PayPal, the money shows up in my account right away
and that baby is in a box and out the door!

2021-03-08 Thread Eric Daume
PayPal has two modes, Friends & Family and Goods and Services. G&S charges
a fee to the seller, I think 3%, but offers some protection for both
parties. F&F doesn’t offer any protection. I’ve heard of cases where the
buyer paid in F&F and then retracted the payment after they got the part.

But it will be old news soon, because there will be a pile o’ new Platys

Well, while we wait for the ship to be unloaded (MONDAY! 🥳), I made a
video of my Platy because...IT’S FINALLY COMPLETE. I was waiting on a
 bunch
of rose anodized parts and a Randi Jo bag in custom colors and all of
 those
things arrived on Thursday and I whisked the whole getup to the bike shop
for assembly. Here’s a video that may not show up. So after that, I’ll
 send

The way this would work in real like (cuz I'm the ebike liker around

[RBW] Re: What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Roberta,
Cash is best. I've done transactions with RBW listers (who are "known
listers") via check.

I was under the impression that PayPal G&S is more favorable to the buyer
than seller-- but I haven't looked at it recently. Also, note that PayPal
submits tax forms if your sales exceed a certain amount. As it's the sale
of a used item, it does qualify for IRS exemptions, but documentation could
be a pain.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Dave S
I've been selling a lot of things online during the pandemic and the seller
protections are very minimal across the board. It seems like most of the
payment services treat individuals like businesses who just have to accept
some amount of loss due to damage, theft, etc. I've had:

   - issues with buyers claiming something didnt work, return it (my
shipping cost both ways) only to find it works perfectly upon its return.
   - freight damage from fedex ground (purchased through shipbikes) that
resulted in weeks of runaround with claims. Fedex actually picked the bike
up, brought it back to their facility and weighed it, verified it was
"light" and then returned it to me. All the seller wanted was a credit for
missing parts that fell out of the box when it was destroyed. He ended up
saying "forget it" and I gave a full refund.
   - Right now I'm dealing with a chainring that went missing (USPS) after
shipment. USPS told us to wait because things are backed up. Now we're
past the USPS claim window, but not past the Paypal claim window. Not sure
   how this ends.

None of these seem to be malicious but all the payment systems definitely
favor the buyer and most all of the risk is on the seller.

Roberta:

I’ve never had a problem buying or selling using PayPal. I would never, ever
take a check of any kind, cashiers or otherwise.

Craigslist offers advice on how to avoid being scammed:

Among their recommendations: “Don’t accept cashier/certified checks or money

[RBW] Re: What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread David Person
The lead article in latest issue of Adventure Cycling magazine is about
buying a used bike. There is a section on "How to Pay". Several methods
are mentions. The section on PayPal mentions that as a seller you can send
the buyer an invoice on PayPal, which adds add'l safeguard (I suppose in
the form of documentation should a dispute arise). Purchase Protection is
automatically included when Goods & Services is used (3.7% fee charged to
seller).

[RBW] Re: What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Minh
most everyone has it covered, paypal generally covers the buyer more than
the seller, if you are selling remotely its really your only option so a
little bit of due dilligence is warranted, like someone thats active in the
list etc.

when i sold my stable a few months ago (5 bikes in a month), it was in
person, so i accepted pretty much anything, usually Venmo or Zelle--Venmo
there is a little bit of risk for chargebacks, Zelle i'm told cannot be
taken back. either form once its in you app you are fine. and ofc you
still have option of cash! i would not accept any form of check unless
you do it at the PAYERS bank and they cash it on the spot--but in that case
why cant they pull it out in cash!

[RBW] WTT: 63cm Canti-Rom for 60cm Hillborne (original green one)

2021-03-08 Thread Dan Sullivan
Not sure the moderator(s) will let this through; most of my infrequent
posts are on the iBOB list. But if they do here's the deal: I am tall with
pretty short legs (I broke Trek's "what size frame should I get" app when I
entered my dimensions) and I've always wanted a bike in the 60-62 seat tube
range with a longer-than-60-cm top tube, which seems to be the limit for
nearly all production frames. One of the exceptions was the first
Hillborne run, which had a 61cm effective TT. I had a line on one last
year that never panned out, meantime I got the Rom, which is a great bike
and I will ride it happily but I'm using a long-setback post and a
ridiculously long stem and it still feels a little short for me (it has a
59.5 TT).

So if you have a green Hillborne from the first run and wanna trade for a
slightly sprightlier bike that is equally rare, let's talk.

Dan, where the snow is almost gone in southern WI

I have the (formerly front) Microshift shifter reversed on my MB-1. The
problem I've run into is that it doesn't quite clear the grip perfectly
(I'm using the Rustine's rubber grips because I'm quite vain.) The is a
small window where the rubber from the grip and the rubber from the shifter
rub. I probably need to move the shifter, but there's really no more
forward space on the handlebars. (The older VO Porteur version.)

Still the complete friction shifting is pretty easy to figure out.

[RBW] Re: Convert to Tubeless?

2021-03-08 Thread Justin Drake
I have done tubeless setups with and without tubeless ready rims and tires.
Tubeless ready stuff is much easier, but it can be done without if
pressures are low enough. Think large MTB tires. I rad tubeless on supple
tires for a while a several bikes but found ride quality was wonderful.
Very little issues with flats until the tire got a giant gash in the middle
of the tread and took lots of little pieces of torn fabric to seal. I also
found it was more work as sealant dried out and tubeless tires leaked more
than tubes. So I have gone back to tubes on everything but my MTB. On
supple tires I have found a little sealant in the tubes goes a long way in
protecting against run of the mill tiny punctures. YMMV.

[RBW] Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-03-08 Thread joshuamarx
Hello!
I've been spending time on this group for years, for inspiration and
information, and for general entertainment. It's high time I join the group
properly so I can contribute every once in a while.

I'm a proud owner of a 60cm 1st gen (I think) Cheviot, and a 59 cm MIT
Atlantis--one of the demo completes that Riv sold a while back. Links to
pictures are below (crossing my fingers that they come through properly).

Pre-COVID, 99% of my riding was commuting (downtown Pittsburgh) and errand
running. The non-commuting of COVID has really cut into my bike time--I may
need to figure out how to work recreational rides into my life this spring!
Best,

[RBW] Re: Salt Lake City Cycling Question

2021-03-08 Thread Mark Anderson
Brady,

First off, welcome to the neighborhood. I hope you and yours will like
living here.

I suppose my experience since moving here a couple years ago is similar to
that of Jay, Glen and Robert in that I rarely have trouble with goatheads
in the Wasatch bench/front/up-on-the-hill areas and mostly encounter them
down in the valley especially through the corridor along Jordan River Trail
and connecting trails like the Denver & Rio Grande Western Trail going
north towards Ogden. However, I would note that most of Salt Lake City,
its metro area and associated business/government/cultural services (e.g.,
breweries, bowling alleys, the Bicycle Collective, most but not all of the
better Asian takeout food) are in the very same valley where all the
goatheads lie. That is also where I live and do much of my riding and I
get lots of goat head punctures.

Regarding armored tires, my partner's 'round-town bike has Schwalbe
Marathon green guard (MGG) tires and hasn't had any flats, but it also
hasn't been ridden a heck of a lot. The MGGs are heavy, stiff and basically
just so damn thick along the tread that thorns can't reach all the way
through to the tube. My trike came with Schwalbe Marathon Racers which have
a nylon fabric belt under the tread. Thorns go through the belt pretty
regularly, and the local thorns are long enough to get picked up in the
sidewalls above the narrow belt. A Shikoro might fare better, but I recall
various kevlar tires getting punctured by thorns in my distant youth in
northern California as well.

My solution on the trike has been to use lightweight tires (Tioga
Powerblock/Powerband S-Spec and Compass in ca. 40mm widths) with inner
tubes containing Orange Seal---a solution cribbed from Patrick Moore's
posts on this list and on iBOB (thank you Patrick!). With this setup I
occasionally have a puncture which noticeably leaks sealant for several
minutes and requires a few stops to add air as it leaks slowly before
finally sealing. In the past year (9 mo. riding, about 4500 mi. on the
odometer) there have been two or three times when I had a puncture that
wouldn't seal enough while riding and I had to change tubes. Inspecting
the tires and tubes at those times shows that dozens of punctures went
unnoticed in that same period. Unfortunately that meant having to put a
new tube into a tire the still had a score or so of thorns still sticking
through it, which is about as much fun as it sounds. A few times I have
gone out to the shed and found that a tire has gone flat overnight with all
the sealant having leaked out between tube and tire through some hole
making a big old mess.

I have not tried a tubeless setup yet. Maybe after my current tires wear
out, though I don't know that any of my current rims are
tubeless-compatible. My suspicion is that at least some of the poor
sealing with tubes is due to the hole is the tube becoming misaligned with
the hole in the tire, preventing the sealant from spitting out nicely and
drying to form a plug. Also, I find that some of the seals or plugs in the
tube can be pulled open upon removing the tube from the tire or even just
on fully deflating a tire so that the tube pulls away from the casing. I
imagine a tubeless setup could fix both of those problems.

I have observed that most of the thorns I pull out of my tires, at least
away from the very center, are stuck in grooves/holes/corners of the tread
pattern as though the thorn tip was sliding away until grabbed by the shape
of the tread. Thus I suspect that slick tires may fare better w.r.t.
thorns.

In short, goatheads can be a real scourge around here if you like to
explore the low-lying (4500--5000 ft.) areas, but sealant in tubes can
largely solve the problem. In addition, I think that using full-sized tubes
(i.e., ones that need not stretch much to fill the tire) improves things
further by helping to keep the tube and tire holes aligned, and that slick
tread (e.g., as on your current tires) will help even more by avoiding some
punctures in the first place.

[RBW] Re: What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread 'Joel S' via RBW Owners Bunch
Roberta, I’m not sure if paypal friends and family offers protection, it
should be a non reversible transaction, you need to call . Once payment is
made on non friends and family paypal, I believe the buyer only has 1-2
hours to reverse the charge, and they can always file a dispute. You can
call paypal for more info. Take a lot of pictures, both before and during
packing as well as keeping your listing with those photos. A cashiers
check you need to wait for it to clear prior to shipping. Cash is good
face to face but get a pen at staples to make sure the bills are legit.

I’ve sold once on CL for cash, not an expensive bike. If you use eBay the
buyer can always try to file a dispute so care needs to be taken.

Not sure this is helpful, I prefer to sell on list, sell a bit cheaper as
you know most people ob these lists but that is not a guarantee.

I sold a complete Bleriot on eBay some years ago with no issues but every
transaction can be different.

Good luck

Joel

[RBW] Re: What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Joe M.
With PayPal, if they pay you as “friends and family,” you receive the full
payment amount with no fees taken out. They are offered no protection by
PayPal and they must trust that you will be sending them the bike. If they
choose “goods and services” when paying, you pay a fee but PayPal may offer
them money back if you don’t ship the bike.

As far as sellers protection goes, I never ship until the money is in my
account. I do not accept personal checks or cashiers checks. No checks of
any kind. These days everyone has Venmo, PayPal or Zelle. If they don’t, I
don’t sell to them.

And of course, cash is king. I only meet people in high traffic public
places like Starbucks or bank parking lots.

I can easily get a sense of someone’s legitimacy by talking with them. If I
have a bad feeling about someone or a transaction then I abort.

And if someone messages you on Craigslist asking for your phone number,
NEVER give it to them. They can use it to steal your identity.
When it comes time to meet with someone I ask for their number and I use a
Google voice number to communicate with them.

[RBW] Re: Riv-ersed Shift Levers Install

2021-03-08 Thread EricP
Did similar on the Clem last year. Had a Paul Thumbie for the front and an
extra Shimano bar end. Ended up having to buy a SunRace rear thumbie for
the front.

What I find amazing is we used to do this back in the day. Maybe early
1990's? Some racers started doing this with the SunTour SC shifters. Then
others realized the big Shimano XT also worked, but they weren't as good as
the Dia Compe. FWIW, I remember being told once that this trend is what
lead to the paddle shifter idea in the first place. Not sure if it's true
(probably not). But it makes for a good story.

Did have my brake levers reversed at one point, but switched back quickly.
Didn't like the feel that way.

(FWIW, got my first outdoor ride today in the 55 degree weather.)

Note that transferring the funds out of Paypal and into your bank account
does not protect you from Paypal reacquiring those funds back from your
account in a dispute. That's why they have you "link" your bank account
rather than it just set up as a direct deposit.

[RBW] Re: Shoe recs for platforms

2021-03-08 Thread Robert Hakim
I bought a pair of these :
https://www.specialized.com/us/en/2fo-flat-2-0-mountain-bike-shoes/p/155830?color=237107-155830&searchText=61119-6237
And I quite like them. They're a bit warm in the summer but are stiff,
comfortable, durable and shed reasonable amounts of water.

I bought mine last year, they had better color options- i.e. not super
bright and not white.

 Hi all,

I've seen a few old threads on this topic, but am curious what shoes
people like for their platforms? I'm using the newish grip monarchs.

I've been riding in an old pair of running shoes for a number of years,
but the holes are getting out of hand and it's time for them to retire. I
tried a pair of fairly rigid spd shoes that I had sitting around from a
 few
years ago (without the cleats) and while I like the rigidity, the grip
doesn't hold up when they're wet.

I'm finding that I like the additional stiffness. Trying the mushy
running shoes again, they feel pretty bad. I'm not sure how they didn't
 bother me all those years.

So what's grippy (esp when wet), not too hot, decent in the rain, and
reasonably stiff?(doesn't have to be cycling specific)

 Thanks for your thoughts!

Thanks Doug. You are right it needs more information. I can't find the
MUSA Geometry chart but I am confident someone has it. I think it is
similar to the Toyo Atlantis but with longer chain stays - I want to say
47-48 mm for Waterford, versus 52 range for the new MIT version, and 45
 for
 the Toyo.

Here is an old listing that the previous bike mechanic posted I traded
for it. I traded a 58 Atlantis that Doug connected me with and I bought
from the list. I rode it maybe 200 miles since I traded for it, mostly
because of Covid and very little bike commuting.

It has Nitto Noodle bars, Shimano brakes, bar ends but not Shimano
(can't tell name), Origin Seatpost but probably have a Nitto and can look,
Brooks C17 but could trade it for a leather B17, Cx-70 Canti Brakes,
 Sugino
Crank triple, 9 speed cassette, Deore Rear derailleur, and Pasela 42 mm
tires. The Wheels are Velocity Atlas wheels, Atlas rims with Velocity
 Hubs.
Everything looks in great shape. I found one small paint chip on the top
tube and will add a picture when the sun is shining.

 https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/2629426/

I would love to sell to someone local. These bikes are hard to price.
I'll drop to $2250 plus shipping. Happy to talk build and price. I don't
want to part out, because of the hassle of selling each part. I have
 enough parts.

I am not in a rush to sell and if I don't sell this one, I might try
selling a 55 Joe Appaloosa or Some Grand Randeneur.

[RBW] Re: question re Brooks leather bar tape

2021-03-08 Thread KenP
Yes, nice tape. I bought from ebay, then when I tried to wrap it broke at
the seams; lengths were joined together somewhere in the middle. That
must have been a bad roll. Too expensive to keep trying. So, I bought
another set from bike shop. Let them put it on. I like that it feels
comfortable and matches my saddle. Make sure you like the bars and the
color first. I wrapped different bars myself with success after watching
a bunch of youtube videos. There are so many ways. Hope you enjoy the
tape.

[RBW] Re: Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-03-08 Thread E. Ricky Creek
Welcome!
Cool bikes!
My wife and I visited Pittsburgh a few years ago and brought our bikes.
Lots of hills, lots of busses, but we had a great time pedaling around a
new city.

I moved to a new town a three years ago and my daily bike commute stopped
being a daily thing. I found that recreational riding is boring if there
isn't a theme or destination. I got back into film photography and now have
things that I search out. Right now I'm super into ice freezers that you
find outside of gas stations or liquor stores. I don't know why, but they
seem really classic to me. Cemetery rides can be fun, too.

Re: [RBW] What is the seller's safety with PayPal and other payments.

2021-03-08 Thread Peter Adler
PayPal now has a third option, which I discovered last night when I paid an
RBWer for a shirt: The buyer pays through Friends & Family, but pays an
additional fee on their own end to preserve their buyer protection (e.g.,
seller pockets money then sends damaged product/product not meeting presale
description/sends no merch at all). This displaces the standard seller
concern (*the percentage comes out of my end!*) while allaying some of the
buyer's equally valid concerns when dealing with a seller they don't know
IRL (*how do I know you're not going to rob me?*)

Most of the voiced complaints re PayPal/Venmo/Apple Pay etc. around here
are those of sellers who think they've gotten burned, or who fear they
might get burned. As a person who's been exclusively on the buyer end for
25 years, and who is still wrestling with eBay/PayPal over a $750 laptop
that was allegedly "delivered" by FedEx (where the only evidence for a
delivery is a BS FedEx delivery/tracking notice - I was standing on my
porch when FedEx claims to have "delivered" it, and there was no truck),
for which the commercial seller refuses to accept any liability (even
though they said they didn't trust FedEx, for obviously good reason)...may
I say that I think there are two sides to this issue, and I'm glad that
someone with muscle is at least willing to pretend to contend for my
interest. Because otherwise, I'd be out the price of a lot of bicycles,
with nothing to show for it and nowhere to seek redress.

And let's not ignore that in a lot of metro areas, there's a long history
of attractive Craigslist ads as bait, placed simply to set buyers up to be
mugged for the cash brought as payment for non-existant goods. In San
Francisco (CL Central), the problem got so bad that the SFPD had a setup
for awhile where exchange of payment/goods for CL purchases could happen
under police supervision, in the parking lots of police stations.

Sure, seller beware. But buyer beware, too. There's a reason that the
latter one is a commonplace saying, and the former one isn't.

As for "hearing of cases", I think that's a show-your-work thing. As I read
it, once I send money F&F, it's gone; I have no way to get it back, whether
the seller makes good on the transaction or not. Members of this group
should note that every PayPal payment I've made to anyone here has always
been F&F; this reflects not so much my trust of people's inherent decency
(only people who don't know me would think I'm like that) as my
pinchpennyness, my fatalism, and my hope for intolerable social censure in
the event the transaction goes south.

One thing to consider is, if a seller isn't willing to pay the Goods &
Services fee to offer protection to a buyer (a fee which they should be
incorporating into the total sales price, just as would happen with a
shipping fee), why should a buyer trust them? Personally, if I insisted on
buying a big-ticket item from a buyer too far away for me to pound on their
front door who refuses to go the G&S route, I'd bite the bullet and pay the
F&F protection fee, purely for my own safety.

[RBW] Re: Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-03-08 Thread Roberta
Welcome.
I was out to Pittsburgh about 1 1/2 years ago for business and I bought my
bike. Each day, I started at a different point on the GAP for a day ride,
went south 10-15 miles and then back, as my hotel was in Pittsburgh. It
was 90*+ but you have some nice shade on that trail, and some beautiful
views.
