Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Frame - Susie W. Longbolts / Wolbis Slugstone 53cm!

2020-10-10 Thread Paul Budnitz
Thanks Mark.

It’s a super-cool bike. If nobody buys it soon I’m tempting myself to keep it
and use it as a second gravel bike. :)

I’d probably have to throw out our lawnmower to fit another bike in our shed,
however!

2020-10-10 Thread Ash
This's a very good deal! The next batch is probably 18 month out or longer.

Of the two Rivs and two other bikes I have Susie is the one that gets
ridden the most these days. Gravel rides with kid's trailer attached,
grocery runs, bring take out food from next town, a 8-mile quick fitness
ride during lunch breaks.. this bike can be used so many ways. I even did
a 100k a month ago. Now I'm planning a loaded multi-day tour on Susie
sometime this year. Best of luck Paul.

Thanks everybody :^)

So the V-O Zeppelins are really too narrow, correct? They would (of
course) work but would become the tire size limiter rather than the
frame/fork clearance... Does anyone in the U.S. sell the 60mm Berthouds?
I also stumbled across the PDW Full Metal Beast 65mm fenders, pricey but do
they fit?

2020-10-10 Thread Mark Roland
Looks great Paul. Makes sense to give it a try, such a unique bicycle.
Since Susie's first cousin, El Clem, already has Boscos, I wanted something
different. I've got a few options, including Choco-Moose, but I decided to
try VO's Klunker bars. It goes well with my BMX homage build, even though I
never road BMX. Got inspired by a Kooka crank (not really bmx either) and
went from there.
I love the new Nitto faceplate stems, thinking of a 65 or 85 in case I get
tired of the bmx setup. Should work with wavies or other flatish bars, or
drops even. I tend to leave most bikes be once I finish a build, but I may
mess around with the Wolbis over the winter. Now back to that wheel build...

Re: [RBW] Re: (Best) metal fenders for Joe Appa?

2020-10-10 Thread Patrick Moore
If the VOs turn out to be to narrow, try Colin at Kelpie who makes custom
fat tire fenders in a thicker gauge of aluminum with 6.5 mm instead of 5 mm
stays; about $250 or so, IIRC. (He used to make them from titanium at $100
more but said they were so strong that, when he collected a stick under his
front, it bent the fork but not the fender; he started using aluminum after
that incident.)

The finish is not polished, but they're not bad looking, and they are
strong. My Matthews RBFD has 3" of toe overlap with fender, so I kick the
front from time to time; no damage yet. And not too heavy, either; the 80
mm wide ones (to fit tires almost 62 mm wide) with second (tho' short)
front stay weigh about 2 lb the pair, about the weight of a pair of SKS's
in the wider sizes.

[RBW] Silver shifters v1: Force required w. front derailleur

2020-10-10 Thread Eric Marth
Hi all – I just installed a set of Silver shifters, mounted to Shimano
pods. The rear derailleur is working great, with a light touch. However the
front derailleur requires some serious English in order to shift up (adding
tension). The lever moves normally with the wingnut snugged up when the
cable is detached from the derailleur.

It shifts and holds position so far but the amount of force required seems
excessive. Certainly requires a lot more than the Shimano levers I just
removed.

Is this typical of these levers? If not, does anyone have an idea of how I
might correct?

Cables and housing are brand new, housing ends are clean. No tight bends or
kinks to the housing. Started with barrel adjuster backed out one and a
half turns.

Thanks for the help!

Re: [RBW] Re: Any particular grease cleaner you would recommend!

2020-10-10 Thread Todd G.

I’ve been using Dumonde Tech for a number of years and like it. I use it
year round, and it seems to do the job for me. It lasts somewhere around
150 miles or so before I feel the need to wipe the chain down and re-apply
the lube.

Around a year ago, a friend gave me a bottle of Muc Off dry lube. I was a
little skeptical at first because when I was a kid I used White Lightening
dry lube, and it was a hot mess. So taking in to consideration I didn’t
really know what the heck I was doing at that time, I used it. A sit turns
out I really like the stuff, especially in dusty dry conditions. My entire
drivetrain stays pretty clean, however I don’t feel like I get very much
mileage out of a single application. 75 miles or so and I feel like I need
to wipe down the chain and re-apply.

I have some Rock-n-Roll gold that I have had sitting in a cabinet for
somewhere around 10 years or so. I need to finish the bottle off. I have no
idea what it was that I heard, but I heard something about the owner of
Rock-n-Roll that really rubbed me the wrong way. This was at least 10 years
ago. So, now that I can’t recall what it was that I heard, maybe I’ll get a
few rides in with it on a clean chain and report back. FOr whatver it’s
worth, I feel like the Muc Off keeps the drivetrain the cleanest overall.

As far as cleaning, sometimes I use the Sonic Cleaner at work, sometimes I
remove teh chain and put it into a screw top container filled with warm
water and a gentle eco-friendly laundry detergent, and shake, shake, shake,
air dry, or let it bake in the sun until it is completely dry. Those two
are my best and most favorite methods. Between lubes I run the chain
through a shop rag for a minute or so, changing to clean spots on the rag,
then re-apply lube, run t through one more time to remove any excess, and
I’m ready to ride.

That’s my routine for the most part. I don’t really deviate from that, and
I get good mileage out of my drivetrains, so I’m sticking to it!
