Thanks for that perspective compendium James. Much of what becomes
contentious about various lubes does focus on a very narrow aspect of its
function (or impact) and environment of use. Props for the article too.

Leah,

Try Simworks if you want aluminum fenders. I have an MIT Atlantis with 700
x 55c Rene Herse Antelope Hill tires. Simworks has a fenders all the way up
to 80 mm wide. Mine are the Flat 65s. They fit only needing a very small
crimp on either side by the fork. Simworks has other sizes as narrow as
35 mm as well as other profiles (Round,Turtle, Fuji and Liner). James at
Analog said that Simworks fenders, which are made by Hong by the way, have
the best attachment hardware. Love your new Platy!

Re-radiusing the wavy fender to fit 700c is very easy. Velo Orange even
has a blog on how to do
it: https://velo-orange.com/pages/re-radiusing-fenders

You'll have to gently squeeze the fender together so it ends up being a bit
narrower. The wavy is pretty wide from the start so you'll probably be ok
if your tire choice isn't super wide.

John,

Per the aerial map in the below link (scroll down), the area I mentioned
earlier is free commuter parking for Seastreak (Lot 2). (The smaller Lot 1
also works, if spaces are available at 11:30.) I think you were looking at
Lot 3.) I believe what you're suggesting is Lot 4, which would also work.
But wherever you may want to park, you'll be sure to see Rivs circling
about.

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-05 Thread Dave
I think all of VO's fenders are the same length. If anything, the fender
may grow slightly in overall length. The squeezing of the sides is going
to cause the fenders to slightly stretch. Think about squeezing a piece of
playdough (or real dough!?). If you smash a round ball, you get a much
bigger (but thinner) pancake. Same idea.

[RBW] Herse v. VO Crankset

2020-10-05 Thread Brady Smith
Hi all,

I'm planning some improvements to my BMC Monster Cross and a new crankset
is among them. I had it built with a 48x34 setup but after riding it for a
while I've decided 46x30 is probably more my speed.

I'm curious as to the group's thoughts on the merits of the Velo Orange and
Rene Herse models. I'm sure the VO is fine, and I've had nothing but good
experiences with their products. But from what I gather, the Herse model
has much nicer finishing and Herse makes a whole line of compatible
chainrings that let you mix and match as you change terrain.

Should I save a little money and go with the VO model or go all in and buy
the Herse crankset?

The primary purpose is randonneuring, but I do plenty of general riding on
this bike as well.

Thanks!

Brady

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-10-05 Thread Roberta
That looks beautiful, Dave.

I was going to bring my A Homer Hilsen (42 tires), but that doesn't have
fenders. And, you mention gravel. Would fendered Joe Appaloosa (47 tires)
be better? Or, is it whichever bike "speaks" to me that day?

I'm OK going up moderate hills that aren't too steep (but nothing like
Leah's killer hill), but if your wife wants to walk it, I'll be happy to do
so with her. I'm also not used to big hills. On my first ride for MS, I
got over the bridge to Ocean City, NJ OK.

[RBW] Re: A brand new Rambouillet made its way to my house...

2020-10-05 Thread Mike Godwin
Must be in the air Julian

I grabbed a creamcycle version too, 62 cm a little more than a week ago.
Even though it had been through 2 other owners, it looks new after all
these years. I had all parts on hand except a stem, so a fellow ibob
offered one up and is the mail. Rummaging around for cable housing, viola,
a Nitto Pearl way in the back and it is together with two rides over the
weekend. This replaced Ram 005 I sold 6 years ago. It was a 61 cm
prototype. The 62 fits nicer for some reason.

[RBW] Green Rambouillet, 56cm, new lower price

2020-10-05 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi all,

I am posting this for a friend who has been unable to ride for a number of
years and his Ram has been sitting unused in his garage. It is "almost" in
almost pristine condition with very few miles. There are just a couple of
scratches on the top tube from a garage tip over. I've got some touch up
paint for those. Everything is in fantastic condition and the bike is
awesome. I've got an original orange Ram and I love these bikes...

He is now asking $1300.

Here are the details:

Rambouillet frame, 56 (cm center to top)
Noodle bars 44cm
Technomic stem - 11cm
Shimano levers and mid reach brakes
Shimano 9spd bar ends
Sugino crank 48/36/26, 170mm crank arms
Nitto seat post
Brooks Champion B17
Shimano Xt rear derailler
Shimano 105 front derailler
Shimano 105 hubs/Mavic Open Pro rims 32 spokes
28mm Ruffy Tuffy tires (nearly new)
Shimano cassette - 12-32
Wellgo SPD/flat pedals

The seat height in the pics is 74cm. There's room for 35 Compass Bon Jon
Pass tires.

Here's a link to a bunch of pics:

Thanks,

[RBW] (Best) metal fenders for Joe Appa?

2020-10-05 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Howdy folks.

I bought one of these off the list last year, came with the SKS vendors as
is typical for an RBW bike. I would like to put metal fenders on it, just
because. I have an unused set of the first generation V-O Zepplins, which
would work, but I suspect wider is really ideal based on the clearances of
the JA. Cheap(er)-but-good is always the best for me, so I suspect the
V-O Wavy fender is the best choice. Am I missing anything?

Thanks, Doug

Re: [RBW] Herse v. VO Crankset

2020-10-05 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
I have a Herse crankset I bought from Jan Hein. They are beautiful and I wanted
one for many years before I decided to pony up. They are costly.
Works as good as it looks, but here is the rub:
I’ve mounted hundreds of cranks over the past 30+ years. I’ve only ever had one
come loose: the very 1st one I mounted. The Rene Herse crankset one came loose
so many times that I kept a Campy peanut butter wrench in my bag. I mistakenly
followed Jan’s directions to the letter.
I finally did it my way, greased the spindle and used a 3/8” breaker bar to
torque it on. Been good ever since.
I tried to contact Rene Herse cycles only to find they don’t respond to emails
and don’t list their phone number on their web site. I thought, what a
stinker!, he’s got all my contact info. The whole experience kinda soured me
towards Rene Herse cycles.

The new Silver crankset would be most enjoyable if bigger chainrings were
available. A 104 four-bolt bigger than 36 is hard to find.

2020-10-05 Thread Kieran J
I've been riding a VO 50.4mm crankset for years and it's great. I certainly
recommend it. I replaced the rings with some smaller TA ones.
SUNXCD also makes a similar set of arms that you can pair with some TA
rings of your choosing.

Not cheaper, but the simworks flat 65 (
https://www.sim.works/collections/fenders-simworks-by-honjo/products/flat-65?variant=5250514812957)

worked on my Joe and look nice. It took some dimpling at the chainstays,
seatstays and fork crown, but they work well enough (and they were
leftovers from my clem). Gives plenty of room underneath for some 650x50
cazaderos.

I just mounted them for the "rain" California is expecting at the end of
the week.

Yup, the SunXCD arms are beautiful and can be matted with TA Cyclotourist
rings. Good luck, looks like you have quite a few options. You can get
the SunXCD from a couple of shops in the UK without breaking the bank. You
can also just buy the arms from them and get the TA Cyclotourist chainrings
from Peter White.

I really appreciate the simple design and the concept. I've found that
most bike tail lights attach to the seatpost. This doesn't work for me

I know they also make clip-on lights that can attach to the saddle bag,

I also don't love this solution because I've found that the angle of the
light can change pretty easily without a more fixed point and doesn't
always direct the light the way you might want.

Anyway, the BL light looks great to me but the shipping cost is just
too much to stomach. If anyone knows of other vendors that sell these I'd
love to find them, but I suspect these are made specifically for BL as my
searching hasn't returned them anywhere else. I was wondering if any of
 you

Bob

Thanks for the link highlighting the Seastreak ferry parking Lots #1, #2,
#3, & #4 as well as the text descripton. It was a very big help. I was
using Bing Maps and they show Hennessey Blvd as West Ave.

I suggest meeting in Parking Lot #1, at 1st Ave and Sutton Way. It
appears paved with painted parking spaces.

The small lot I was referring to is at the southern end of Lot #2 and the
eastern end of Lot #3 and boarding the HHT path. The aerial map you
provided shows this as a dirt lot. The Bing aerial shows it as paved with
parking spaces. But Lot#1 is better and easier to find.

Dave S mentions the HHT between AH and Highlands is gravel. Is it crushed
gravel or loose???

Do you think we need any more directions for the folks coming??? The train
and ferry NYC folks seem to know what to do. Are the driving "directions"
adequate wrt to getting there and parking. Fairly simple: Get to GSP
South to Atlantic City, get off at NJ SR36, take SR36 to Atlantic Highlands
and turn left on 1st Ave (it's a jug handle, make a right to the loop to
1st Ave and cross SR36 at the light). Go down 1st to the almost the end
and go in Parking Lot on Bob E's map. and parking??

I always worry about parking in busy areas. Schools, parks and shopping
centers are ok, but 'downtown' areas could be challenging. Parking Lot #1
looks to be safe and the best choice.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-10-05 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Regarding directions: Plug this into your GPS:

2 Simon Lake Drive
Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716

Regarding parking: Lot 1 might fill up sooner, but Lots 1 and 2 are right
next to each other, so it really doesn't matter; we'll see each other. Even
if you park on the street somewhere, just come down to the trail.

Regarding the trail surface: I haven't been on the HHT since 2018, but I
seem to remember that most of the trail is paved, and what isn't is a very
fine crushed stone surface -- in other words, any bike and any tire will be
fine on it.

Regarding the climb: They are approaches to a fairly high bridge, but the
grade really isn't bad at all.

Regarding the ride from Sandy Hook to Long Branch: It's a nice (and
shorter) alterntive to going back to Matawan. As Dave pointed out, the ride
from Sandy Hook to Long Branch starts off alongside a large rock seawall on
a paved trail, but that's only for a couple of miles -- after that, you're
on Rt. 36 as you enter downtown Sea Bright. After Sea Bright, there's a
wide shoulder and you pass nice homes and some beach clubs. At Long Branch
Rt. 36 turns into a four-lane highway (Ocean Blvd), so I've turned onto
side streets from there to get to the train station. A ride along Ocean Ave
(not Blvd) and on the promenade at this time of year (no crowds) would be
very nice, as it's obviously right along the ocean.

To give you an idea of what some of the route is like, the photos in the
below link are from a ride where I took the train from Linden to
Aberdeen/Matawan, rode east along the HHT, turned right after the bridge
(bypassed Sandy Hook that time), rode down Rt. 36 and hit the beach at
Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch to go for a swim before
taking the train home:

And this one is of Sandy Hook itself:

Have you looked at the Velo Orange hubs? I had a rear on my recently
departed Atlantis and I was quite happy with it, Much less money than the
Oynx, but you don't get fancy colors,

Bob,

Thanks for the directions, which answers John's question. The pictures
look lovely and I cannot wait for what looks like a wonderful route!

Re: [RBW] Platypus: First Look

2020-10-05 Thread Roberta
I'll be getting a pair of these also; at least they are pretty Ergons!
Thanks for the tip!

Prior to Riv, I had a 1990 hybrid bike and my purchase of Ergon grips was
the best investment in comfort I made for that bike. I still have the
grips, but they are too short for this application.

I hope to be back in Las Vegas visiting my sister again this coming spring,
and we can get together and I can admire your bike. ANN, are you still
planning on coming down?

[RBW] Re: OT: FS For Sale Film Cameras, Olympus OM-1, Nikon F

2020-10-05 Thread Mike Godwin
Cool cameras Mark. I used a SRT100 on jobs at a giant factory in Los
Angeles, on the west slope of the Rockies, superfun_d sites in CA and TX,
and in England and Turkey. Ioved being able to control the exposures, but
man it was heavy some times, the electronic point and shoot won out
eventually.

I get a kick out of us taking photos of film cameras with, I assume, is an
electronic camera. An anachronism at its best.
