I don't remember that, Joe. Not saying it didn't happen; I just don't have

The only bike I recall Grant having direct input on was the SOMA San

He did give some advice to XtraCycle about head-tube angles early on, as I
recall. Don't quote me on that, though.

Very inspiring video, thanks for posting. It's great to see the pleasure
Vera gets from riding and from inspiring others.

Last week I was riding in an unfamiliar place and stopped to look at a map.
There was a friendly-looking bicyclist stopped nearby so I asked him
directions, and we began talking. He was dressed like me with clip-in
shoes and helmet, otherwise comfortable street clothes. He had a pretty
nice bike, and was telling me about the new components he'd just
installed. I guessed his age to be mid-60's, as he looked about my age or
younger. He told me of two loops he regularly rides, one 18 miles and the
other 25 miles. We had a nice chat and before leaving, I asked him his
age. He said he was 87 years old, born in 1933, and added that his wife
was also 87 and still beautiful.

[RBW] Re: Valuating modified 2003 Curt Goodrich 26" wheel custom frame FS

2020-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
I should add in response to some of the questions and comments that this is
a* road *frame, though one whose distant parent was my 1992 XO-1. It can
easily take 32 mm tire with fenders, and I daresay 38s, only the calipers,
even if you choose widely-arched ones like the old Dura Aces I have on it
now, will be the limiting factor, not fork or stays.

It's a lot stiffer than the XO-1, and I daresay (love that word) that the
tubing is stouter; f + f + hs was 7 lb for a 58 cm frame. But -- this is
the important thing -- it handles immeasurably better on pavement, and it
also works a lot better (IMO) on dirt, especially sandy surfaces; the XO
was scary in sand, since it would immediately plough; the 2003 is no sand
bike, but the front end is far more stable in sand; this while handling
both quicker and more stable-ly on pavement -- signature Grant handling,
tho' quicker than, say, a Ram, at least my Ram.

Carries 40 lb loads on the rear rack with, if not aplomb, at least dignity,
tho 30 lb is the limit if you don't want to affect the handling. 20 lb on
the front lowriders.

I think I've come up with a price, but I want to get the frame back and
examine it closely and photo it in detail before I decide finally. I won't
aim to screw the greatest amount out of the buyer. (And someone is at that
head of the queue, since he made me a cash offer; I feel obliged to give
him right of refusal if he accepts my ultimate price demand.)

One more thought. I was so delighted by Joe Starck's 1999 fixed gear 26"
wheel gofast Road custom that I had Grant design and Curt build this one as
a derailleur analogue ("analogy"). It has been delightful, but over the 17
years of riding there has always been a wee, little nagging doubt that it
didn't feel quite as spritely as the 1999, and I don't think this has been
merely because of the weight and air drag of fenders, lights, bags, etc. I
think I am in great old age finally experiencing "planing", or rather,
realizing that I have been experiencing the absence of it. Still, it feels
("feels") no slower than the XO-1 did, and it certainly handles better. The
Chauncey clone has been built of normal gauge, .8 .5 .8 (I told him, *not* .7
.4 .7) 531, so I hope to get a "feel" more like that of the 1999.

(Regarding "planing." I'd not hesitate to attribute the *lack* of
sprightliness to the 2003's excessively stout tubing --- except that one of
the bikes that felt "planey" to me and in spades was that 1958 Herse that
others had sold on because it was too stoutly built for them. It *was* a
tank, but it consistently made me choose a cog 1 tooth smaller than
"usual." Likewise the Matthews "road bike for dirt:" tho' made from
thinwall heat treated tubing, it is a tank; but it feels *fast!* So I don't
know where tubing comes into the "faster" equation.)

Over and out.

[RBW] Fatty Rumpkin tire opinions, experiences.

2020-06-20 Thread Ryan M.
I have some Schwalbe G one Allround tires on my Appaloosa but they are the
57mm wide variety. Now, these do fit, but the rear is a bit close to the
chainstays...basically a couple of mm's on each side is the clearance. They
work, are nice tires and are comfy but I'm beginning to wear them out and
have always been a little concerned with the clearance when out in stickier
muddy stuff.. I'm thinking about my next tire set and have been eyeballing
the Fatty Rumpkins, lighter variety as a replacement. I like the tan
sidewall and they look like they can handle some stuff. I think I rode
these back in the day on a Sam Hillborne I had, but just cannot remember
how they felt or if I was impressed or not with them. So, I ask you...

What are your experiences with Fatty Rumpkins? Would you recommend them as
an allroad tire? I basically have been riding the Appaloosa on pavement and
gravel roads, so the tire needs to be cool with that kind of surfaces. I
could always go with a Rene Herse tire too, but thought since I'm making an
order through Riv I would check out what they got in stock. What do you
think?

I think that's possible, Ray. I also have a theory that the stem ovalized a bit

that stem that the bar may have been dragging and creaking on.

Which reminds me, we need a nice tall quill stem with an open face clamp!

Re: [RBW] Problems with Nitto stems and bars?

2020-06-20 Thread Jeremy Till
I can't say that I've read every post in the thread but just to echo something
Benz said: in my experience creaking is endemic with all of the various sleeved
Nitto bars, so if the bar in question is of the sleeved variety that's probably
the culprit in my mind. If I remember correctly the sleeved aluminum Boscos
that I rode from 2014-2016 creaked, and those were clamped in a 4 bolt
removable faceplate threadless stem of the appropriate size, so one of the most
solid bar/stem connections out there. The M151 drop bars i currently have on my
Rambouillet with a Technomic Deluxe creak when I pedal out of the saddle. I've
always just lived with it because it didn't really bother me and didn't seem to
get worse or otherwise make me feel like something was about to fail. YMMV, of
course, but if avoiding the creak was a priority and the other solutions
suggested didn't work, I'd consider going back to the steel Boscos (which I
assume weren't sleeved) or other non sleeved bars.

Re: [RBW] Re: Useful use for beeswax

2020-06-20 Thread Ray Varella
For decades I have used beeswax on wooden tool handles and on wooden knife
handles.
Having spent decades butchering meat, poultry and seafood, I found it to be the
best treatment.
I gently warm the handle, rub with beeswax, gently warm again.
It’s ever so slightly tacky at first but burnishes nicely with the first use.

It’s really critical not to get wooden handles too wet lest they dry out and
crack and split.

I used brylcream and Vo-5 under protest as a little kid.
My father used it on his hair.
Butch wax and the Glasspacks was a local band.

[RBW] Re: Useful use for beeswax

2020-06-20 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I bought one of those lumps too. (Don't think the cup survived.) I keep
some in the basement shop and some in the garage shop.
If I'm building a wheel, I'll first drag the threaded ends across the wax
to ease building and maybe give some thread locking, but more in hopes of
keeping moisture from being forced into the junction of spoke and nipple
threads as the wheel spins.
It's very good stuff for putting on any threaded fastener or hook that goes
into wood. Much easier, even with a battery-powered, handheld drill.

Re: [RBW] Organized Rides 2020

2020-06-20 Thread Steve Palincsar
DC Randonneurs is restarting its schedule, beginning with the July 4
weekend.  Your local club may do the same, because recent changes by
RUSA make electronic proof of passage possible.  People argued for it
for years, but it took a Pandemic to shake loose entrenched rules.

Organized rides - probably not.  USA Cycling and LAB issued some Best
Practices documents outlining steps to be taken to put on an event.
They're beyond the scope of a cycling club putting on a club century, in
my opinion.  Although it's hard to see how a club could be successfully
sued by a participant who might have caught Covid-19 (after all, how
could you tell they got it at your event?) if you were in flagrant
disregard of Best Practices put out by the professional organizations in
the field, you sure would look negligent and might end up having to
prove you /weren't/ responsible, and good luck with that.  Add to that,
you know going in your attendees aren't going to respect social
distancing while they're pacelining, and the documents call for everyone
to wear masks all the time they're riding, and for sure there are going
to be people who won't or can't.  (I wanted to and tried, but I just
can't make it work.)

Yes, Jeremy, I think I’m doing 52 steel Boscos on the Platypus. I don’t want
bars with sleeves anymore.

For anyone who needs to know: If you want to rid the Technomic stem of the hex
nut and replace it with the triangular nut from Riv, make sure you also order
the bolt. Neither Mark nor I thought I’d need the bolt, but you do, because the
threads are different from one another. Get both bolt and stem. I just placed
my order for the bolt, so hopefully it comes in a few days and this is the end
of the matter!

Hey Mark
You are right. I had to get a 68 and a 73.

I kept wondering what difference it would make tho- because I would still
just be threading them all the way in.

Now that you say that...so it must be the flange that is wider and will
extend further? (Lol sry if this is obvious and I am being dense.)

Re: [RBW] Seen some Gus builds, no Susies yet....

2020-06-20 Thread Ray Varella
Can someone post a picture of the 68/73mm combo bottom bracket.
I’m having trouble visualizing why it wouldn’t just be a 73mm.

Will a 73mm bottom bracket take a standard square taper crank or are we looking
at a new standard?

Hi ray- good question.
don’t have mine yet (and I don’t know quite how to picture it either.)

Re: [RBW] Problems with Nitto stems and bars?

2020-06-20 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Leah

When you install the bolt & triangular nut, can you post a picture of the
"shelf" without any bolt or nut present?? If the shelf shows no signs of
missing metal where the hex bolt contacted it, then the hole for the bolt
was drilled lower than it should have been drilled. This is a possible
source of the less than adequate tightening of the stem clamp

I still do not see a mechanistic explanation of why the sleeve on the bar
is a source of the ticking noise.I have used a B177 (Noddle) and a B132
(radonnuer) in 225mm quill technomics without any sounds.

Without an explanation, other than it happened to others, I would be weary
of ruling out use of sleeved bars.

Yes it'll take a square taper crank, I've built a bunch of bikes with 73mm
shells this way. You just need a spindle/arms combination wide enough to clear
wider chainstays.

2020-06-20 Thread Joe Bernard
Kim, if I'm going to take a wild guess - AND I AM - I'm going to say your
combination asks for a spindle length they like/can get in a 68 BB, so they're
glomming on (or kludging!) a cup from a 73 to make it fit that shell. Which
probably works great and come to think of it I think I've done this at least
once. I'm pro glom/kludge 😉

Word up joe!

(And if glom is the root of conglomeratIon, than my build is sure to
qualify.)

Thank you 😊

[RBW] Re: Useful use for beeswax

2020-06-20 Thread Craig Montgomery
Touring a backroad in Central AZ. 2 day's ride from anywhere. Lost a
filling. Had a chunk of Grant's Original Beeswax in my kit. Took out my
trusty Swiss Army knife and heated up a pea-sized piece with the magnifying
glass. Pushed it into the hole. Stayed there for a week and half till I
could get to my dentist. He was duly impressed.
