I measured the 53/Med Susie test bike as being 49.2" (125 cm) long.
I guess they're unlikely to be going on that style of bus front rack!

2020-05-17 Thread ascpgh
After my Rambouillet's brake bridge broke loose and I had it repaired
locally, I investigated respray of the sparkly candy orange and cream color
scheme with the same ($1200-ish) response. Having had the bike since new,
replacing the drive side dropout and then rebrazing the brake bridge I
thought I'd aim that sum toward a down payment on a new frame. There's
still enough of the Joe Bell finish to amaze and it has projected Grant's

[RBW] How to get a wide range Bikepacking 5 or 6 speed cassette?

2020-05-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
On my Proto-Gus I've been riding the 1x11 that Riv built up and it works well
for what it is. However, part of what it is is fussy, and this plays poorly
with my own fussiness. Sardonic grin. High torque mountain riding and
waffer-thin mint cogs require fine calibration and my ogre riding and it are
starting to have disagreements. In general, I shift 2-3 gears at a time.
However, I LOVE the wide range it offers, and I love the 1x simplicity. Oh, and
I'd love to shift back to friction shifting and the new Silver Surfer Shifter.
Grin.

Range: 30 (front) x 11/46 yields 18" x 80", a range I'd love to keep.

Ideas for how such wide-range (18"-80") 5-6 gear (but 8 or 9 if needed would
work) friction shifting beastie might be had?

Options I see:

- Could my current wheel lose it's cassette, gain Surly cassette cogs for the
22-13 range, and then ??? for the bigger cogs?

- Sun Race offers an 8 speed 11-40t that might work. (They have a lot of
options for others building up the Gus/Suzie as well).

- BoxComponents.com has a 9 speed 11-50 (pricy), all steel I'd read somewhere
about a wide range steel 8 or 9 speed cassette start-up, but can't find it now.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Hub Recommendations

2020-05-17 Thread masmojo
Eric, I've put SP Hubs on "Nice" bikes too; I just don't think I'd throw down
$240+ on a SON hub unless it was a bike that was worthy. SP's are (or were)
good for those builds where you want something a little nicer than a Shimano,
but a SON is out of the question. Ideal for a Clem., even a Cheviot or a Sam,
but any nicer than that I am likely to want the SON. My exception to that would
be some thru-axle applications and some of my recent builds where I have a
second set of wheels. One set of wheels might be nicer than the other. SON on
the primary set & SP on the second set.

[RBW] How to get a wide range Bikepacking 5 or 6 speed cassette?

2020-05-17 Thread masmojo
I honestly don't think dropping below 7 speeds will gain you any durability and
if you are running 1X you'll surely miss the additional intermediate gears.
7 spead Shimano Deore was pretty much bullit proof with the advantage of having
an awesome indexing thumb shifter ( switchable to friction) the downside is
those systems were meant to be run 2X so the old stuff likely won't work
anywayz the rear derailleur probably has a max capacity of 36(?)
Now Shimano makes some modern 7/8/9 speed stuff that the sell for lower level
bikes, similar to what Rivendell puts on Clems.
I am running Altus 9 Speed rear on my Clementine. But did you need freewheel or
Cassette?

[RBW] Re: In Praise of RBW

2020-05-17 Thread Nathan Mattia
All this is soo true!
I called a month ago for a Large Royal Trunksack, after hearing crickets
here on the forum for a month when I put out a WTB notice.
Turns out they never actually put Large Royal Trunksack into circulation.
 They don’t really exist.
But you know what, they had one at RivHQ in the back. It even had a
missing rivet, so Will sold it to me at a significant discount.
I am loyal for life now.

[RBW] How to get a wide range Bikepacking 5 or 6 speed cassette?

2020-05-17 Thread Clayton Scott
It can gain you at least theoretical durability if you manage to increase the
flange to flange distance for greater spoke bracing angle.

Pairing a Single Speed Cassette hub with 5-6 cogs will get you there. Almost
"old school" at this point, but certainly a viable option.

Did you see this Box cassette? $69 9 speed cassette in 11-46 or 11-50

https://www.boxcomponents.com/Box-Three-Prime-9-Cassette-Black_2

One thing I'd wonder about would be friction shifting with a clutch
derailleur. The tension is pretty high, would the shifter be able to hold?
I have no experience but maybe someone here has tried.

Friction shifting with clutch derailer works just as well as with clutchless

Would I miss intermediate gears? Nah. I'd be delighted with a manual shift
three speed that was 80", 50", 20", so long as it was hearty and solid.
Remember, my other bikes are fixe gear. Grin.

Yeah, Clayton, I've no desire to go down a rabbit hole on this, and great
desire to avoid doing so. Grin.

However, I'm guessing I'll end up with a Box Three Prime 9 cassette, which
works on 11-speed hubs. Hoping it is compatable with my derailure, and I
can shift to a friction Silver Shifter.

You will likely need a new derailleur if you are currently using an 11 speed
derailleur, especially if you go to 9 or lower, because the chain is wider. But
you can try it first with the one you've got and then change it if it doesn't
work.

Leah, you may already be aware of these products but there are some clothing
that are designed to protect the active person form UV. I have never tried
this type of clothing in weather such as you get in Vegas. Good luck! As a
recipient of 3 skin cancer surgeries, I can understand your desire for
protection. Best, Andy

Andy, did you attach a link somewhere and I’m not seeing it?

I’m so sorry about your skin cancers. Ugh, really scary. I had an end stage
melanoma patient once, and it really left an impression on me. I’m going for my
annual dermatology visit when this crisis is over.

[RBW] Re: How to get a wide range Bikepacking 5 or 6 speed cassette?

2020-05-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Looking the specs over, I've shifted to getting the Box two x-wide group
set and the Silver Shifters. This will give me a known working setup of the
beefiest version, albeit annoyingly indexed, and allow me to test out
Silver Shifter compatibility. The Altus doesn't go wide enough for cogs
larger than 36t.

Leah,

Here are some links. My dermatologist said that people often don’t have sun

far so good for me. And I hope he is right!

Re: [RBW] Sun Protection in Sunny Climes

2020-05-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
A number of thoughts from cooler but higher altitude Colorado where all day
bikepacking trips are a sun challenge:

- I sunburn far less since eliminating industrial oils from my diet (soy,
canola, etc).
- Calendula oil does wonders for healing burns rapidly. Also brilliant as a
disinfectent and for rapid healing of scrapes.
- Loose, long sleeve, lightweight chambray or similar all cotton shirt.
Similarly for pants. Gramicci is worth looking into there.
- I wear either cotton shorts, and sunscreen as needed, or wool breeks.
- For heat, a bandana rolled up and soaked works great and refresh as
needed. Cools the blood going up and down the neck and via evaporation.

Patrick

Re: [RBW] Sun Protection in Sunny Climes

2020-05-17 Thread masmojo
Leah, This may sound odd, but I have several Motorcross shirts. (I think
they make ladies as well) or you could look at mountain biking jerseys I
have one by Kona
The things I like about these:
- Long Sleeve
- Variety of designs from Subdued to High Vis
- light weight mesh material that is not tight or form fitting, but not too
baggy either, breaths pretty well and I am not terrible uncomfortable until
it gets to the high 80's and even then it's OK as log as the sun isn't
beating down your neck or there's a decent breeze. Above 88 or so & I am
gonna go short sleeve and likely a cycling jersey of some sort.
I saw some branded Santa Cruz on Epay for pretty cheap and ladies MTB
jerseys can be cheap on there too.

As soon as it gets hot i start riding on the shady side of the street!!!

https://troyleedesigns.com/collections/new-arrival-jerseys (check out the
Sale section as well)

Fox, Has stuff like this; Maybe not ideal, but might give you some
idea's??:
https://www.foxracing.com/womens-ranger-drirelease%C2%AE-3%2F4-jersey/23239.html?dwvar_23239_color=001&dwvar_23239_size=XS&cgid=sale-mtb#prefn1=gender&prefv1=female&start=13

Might be some women's oriented stuff? Terry maybe?

Oh Yeah!

I feel like I should apologize; it certainly seems like the lions share of
this type thing is Male oriented!

[RBW] Re: Sun Protection in Sunny Climes

2020-05-17 Thread Craig Montgomery
Greetings from the Great Southwest.

Here you go Leah. Some good examples. I've worn Railrider stuff. Pretty
good and some are "caped."

https://www.railriders.com/women-outdoor-clothing-sun-protection-clothing-c-125_138.html

But I prefer 100% cotton and, yes, you should be wearing long sleeves or
SPF arm covers. L.L. Bean has shirts are "caped" also, a slit on the back
with a mesh lining for cooling.

https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/512894?page=womens-sun-protection

I won't suggest cycling clothing. Too tight fitting and doesn't breath
(polyester) no matter what they tell you. Back in the old days you could
get cotton cycling stuff but the marketers have nixed that. We're lucky
because a good tight weave cotton (like from L.L. Bean or Cabelas) is
excellent in our low humidity climate. Loose fitting clothes will press
against you then pull away from your skin pulling moisture with it,
enhancing evaporative cooling. I like the RailRider stuff, even though it's
oil based nylon, because it's loose fitting and very thin. Does the
flapping thing quite well.

And get yourself up Charleston Peak. Some fun high elevation riding.

[RBW] Re: Sun Protection in Sunny Climes

2020-05-17 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Leah,

I'm in Sacramento where we have a similar hot and dry conditions, though a
little cooler than Vegas, I think.

My recommendation is to get the lightest weight, 100% merino wool, long
sleeve base layer or t-shirt you can find. 150 weight or lower, not 250.
Get a good one that is soft, not cheap and scratchy. Slightly loose but
not baggy is good. Women's often come in lighter colors, which is also
good. Wool is sort of a miracle fiber, it wicks and breathes better than
any synthetic I've found, doesn't feel clammy and dries quickly, and
doesn't even need to be washed as often as other materials. It also
hangs/drapes better than cotton. Bonus is that you can also wear the same
shirt as insulation in the winter.

I wear a long sleeve merino T or base layer as sunscreen on the bike, on
snow, and on the water. It can still get warm, but the wicking and
breathability combine to beat everything else I've ever tried. I've worn
cotton, linen, ramie, and rayon in knits and weaves and some seersucker.
None of them worked as well, or looked better with sweat marks, or dried
as fast and comfortably as light weight wool. I actually wear merino dress
shirts for the same reasons.

I wish I had something as useful to suggest for pants. I still use
sunscreen on the hands, and on the face and neck when a hat won't work.
Sometimes I wear a buff or bandana for the neck instead.

Cheers,
Eric

[RBW] Re: Sun Protection in Sunny Climes

2020-05-17 Thread velomann
For hot weather touring my clothing is pretty dialed in, simple, and
inexpensive. Loose, knee length synthetic hiking shorts, preferably
gusseted so the seam isn't up the middle, with a padded cycling liner
underneath. Get a liner that can be worn alone if you want - I like the one
from REI. I like Patagonia Gi shorts but there's lots of options. For a
shirt I like a loose fitting long sleeve cotton/poly blend UV protection
shirt with a back vent. I get them at Goodwill for about 10 bucks. Columbia
Sportswear is a common brand but lots of others make similar items. And a
bandana around my neck always, wetted when opportunity arises.
Last summer I did a two-week, 900 mile tour in that outfit. One shirt, one
pair of shorts, two liners, one bandana. On-road temps occasionally at 100,
a lot of afternoons in the upper 80s-90s.

I had a thought formulating before I saw Grant's response: we can blame
the estate of Honus Wagner for the preponderance of made-up names and
anagrams. The thing about names is, most of the time, in the end, the name
becomes the thing, the thing becomes the name.

When auto manufacturers use names from the animal kingdom, they often
choose ones that evoke speed and sleekness--Mustang, Impala, Cougar, Pinto.
Okay, pinto is actually a bean. And also a horse with a patched coat, not
unlike an Appaloosa. It was also a car from the Ford Motor Company known
for exploding. Here's an idea for a Rivendell bicycle name, an anagram made
 from "Edsel B. Ford."

My first thought about Platypus was, great name for a bike!. One that
 looks like this:

But seriously, naming a bicycle "Platypus" is playful and also has
perhaps an element of thumbing the nose at the bike industry, and marketing
tenets in general. Back to what I was saying about the thing becoming the
name and vice versa, there is the perhaps apocryphal story of Picasso's
reaction to someone pointing out that the portrait he painted of Getrude
Stein doesn't actually look like Stein. In the first version, Picasso
replies, "It will." In the second version, he replies, "In a hundred years,
nobody will care what Gertrude looked like, but they will still be looking
 at my painting."

Gertrude Stein wrote the poem "Sacred Emily", and it has this somewhat
famous line (if lines from poetry can any longer be considered famous in
 these times):

Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose
 Loveliness extreme.
 Extra gaiters,
 Loveliness extreme.
 Sweetest ice-cream.
Pages ages page ages page ages.

A Rivendell by any other name smells as sweet. - *Willy "shaking my
 spear" Shakespeare*

Oh, and here is the image that comes to mind when I conjure a
Winthrop-Charlene bike (Stein, coincidentally, bears a passing resemblance
 to Miss Almira Gutch:

The newest MIT Atlantis models do seem to have gotten even longer than the
first round. I personally wouldn’t be able to fit dropbars to one without it
going a size too small, and having way more stem and seat post than I would be
happy with (short stem notwithstanding). I do hope the new Hillbornes haven’t
gotten longer. The roster is pretty chock full of long bikes. Could be what
others want, though. Who knows?

[RBW] Silver shifter upkeep

2020-05-17 Thread J L
Hello everyone,

I have had a few sets of silver shifter #1. Every now and then one of them has
excessive play in the internals. Thicker washers don't help. Tightening it
doesn't help. Does anyone have a trick for these to help adjust the tolerance?
It feels as if the internals are clamped tight but the level body can still be
wiggled side to aide with the slightest touch. Worn paul internally?

I have tons of washers, square hole washers, and several sets of shifters so
I’m open to try just about anything. If there Isn't a fix I’m not to sad about
it.

Thanks

Riv used to sell seersucker shirts for hot weather riding. Seersucker is nice
because the fabric suckers so only bits of it contacts your skin.

I've had over 20 skin cancers surgically removed with one being a melanoma. I
got lots of sun early in life and it all catches up later. I try and avoid
being out between 10 & 3 or so but if I do go out I wear spf 50 long sleeve
