Well that was borderline rude.Beautiful looking bicycle frameset. I look
forward to seeing the build! All silver? Mix of silver and black would be
my choice with this color palette. Are you planning on fenders? Black
fenders would be killer on this rig.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bread (and bikes)

2020-04-30 Thread Garth

Oh Yes ! The frozen pound cake and frozen zucchini and pumpkin quick
breads and of course even cookies. While I don't eat any of that
anymore, I do freeze nice and very ripe bananas, peeled and left whole.
Utter magnificence. I also refrigerate them after they get nice and ripe
and they keep for at least a week. I They can get very dark on the outside
and remain perfect inside, What I grew up with as a "ripe banana" , the
yellow with a green tip, I cannot even touch anymore. Those
once-in-a-great-while Dairy Queen treats of a banana milkshake/banana split
would have tasted so much better with real ripe bananas ! Frozen grapes
are awesome too, as is very ripe pineapple, but to get it that way you
gotta know how to pick them and let them sit around for awhile until they
ooze sweetness.

The bananas and pineapple I cook with oatmeal, rice and masa flour(Maseca
Tamal in particular) every day. Not to mention berries, apples, plantains,
stone fruits and raisins.

Back to bread though, I assume you're using a decent brand of freezer bags
?

[RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-30 Thread truegolden
Yes, Nathan very similar bikes.

I owned a very customized 1983 Expedition similar to yours and subsequently did
2 self contained bike tours on it of one month each back in 08 and 09. I was
loaded up with 60 pounds of gear and supplies and
toured with a friend who also had an Expedition.

The Expeditions performed very well for those trips.

One trip was across Nevada on Hwy 50 in July. The other was about 30 miles
south of Denver all the way to Yellowstone National Park.

I have very fond memories of both trip. They were quite challenging but very
rewarding adventures for me.

These vintage tourers are no Rivs but have some good qualities for more budget
oriented builds.

Re: [RBW] Re: Joe's Custom

2020-04-30 Thread Joe Bernard
About parts. I'm starting with stuff I have around here, most of it off my
recent Clem L (plus a 650B wheelset from a bigger Clem H I had). It will indeed
be a black/silver mix, but this is just a starting point. I'm probably going to
end up hitting up James and Candice at Analog for a fancy tubeless-compatible
wheelset, which may have blingy red hubs. But I need to see it built up with
non-blingy silver wheels first to decide if adding more red will be too much.
The adventure soon begins!

I've received a few emails asking about the geometry of the bike. I had
assumed that since this is the Rivendell list, that everyone here has
memorized all the Riv bike geometries since the first catalog. I guess I'm
the only one weird like that, so here's a link to the original geo:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/atlantis/atlflyer/04.html

Additionally, the standover height with the RTP tires is 83cm to the top of
the top tube, in the center (sloping top tube, so it's a bit less at the
seatpost, more at the stem). I got a quote for shipping to SoCal from
shipbikes.com for $100. Looks suspiciously low, but I haven't shipped a
complete bike in many years.

Re: [RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-30 Thread Bill Schairer
Leah, your story reminds me of the time I was stopped at a red light and a
young guy pulled up next to me and said “Good morning, SIR.” Rightly or
wrongly, this got my dander up and when he later turned up the same 7% grade I
was taking, I made damned sure I passed him on the way up.

Otherwise, not 30 days for me but close and staying ahead of mileage goal for
the year.

2020-04-30 Thread Leah Peterson
Me with drop bars rather unimaginable.

That would mess up my points system! I would only get points for beating men in
cycling kit on road bikes. See the key to my happiness is to be an unassuming,
unsuspected rival. An underdog. In stealth. Who is pretending this is her
normal speed and not a race. Because then winning is just really funny -
imagine Grant’s expanded geometry suuupeeerrr long 2019 Clem with the
tallest and shortest-reach stem that money can buy, so the goofy rider can sit
bolt upright, outfitted with front and rear racks and a basket- beating
cyclists in a race up a mountain.

But, I *am* getting lighter wheels for my Clem, which is kind of like getting a
Madone, right?

[RBW] Rock n' Road Tires on a Sam Hillborne

2020-04-30 Thread greenteadrinkers
Hello, I've been a lurker for a good bit, my name's Scott.

In the process of spec'd out a build for a 2019 Sam that I picked up from a
list member recently.

Wanted to know if anyone had any experience running Bruce Gordon Rock n'
Road tires on a Hillborne?

Pro's, Con's?

Will be riding gravel roads, roads, and hopefully trails.

Thanks!

So to that end, I went back to riding one speed Cruisers (OK a couple 7
speeders as well), but the point was, although I was on a light weight
cruiser (but portly by comparison) & very upright bike and I really didn't
have much chance to PASS anybody! This really dissuaded me from the urge to
chase and see how fast I could go, it also encouraged me to stop and smell
the roses (and have a Taco)

Nowadays I have a Groove; I know just how much I can put into the pedals
and A) make it comfortably to my destination B) Not punish my knees too
much! and C) not be a red faced sweaty mess when I got where I was going.
Still, it happens pretty regularly that I have some guy on a road bike come
blowing by me only to get about 50 yards in front of me and basically drop
anchor for several miles. That tells me one thing; I was the target of
some misguided overtaking maneuver! This kind of makes me roll my eyes,
but otherwise I find it amusing.

There's a guy who rides the Northhaven Trail, he must be 70. He's got his
kit on and a pretty nice road bike with 23mm tires; about 10 days ago I was
riding my Bombora just after I had put the tubeless tires on I had too low
of tire pressure so as a result was going slower than I should have been,
but at the turnaround I stopped to eat a granola bar, he came & turned
around headed back East. I started up going my normal pace when I came up
on him. at first I hung back figuring he was going slowly temporarily, but
after a while I just decided to go around him and I made some sort of small
talk as I went by just to be friendly. As far as I knew that was it, I
really wasn't paying any attention to where he was or if he was still back
there. Then about a mile before I turned off he comes up by me and says
"oh, I finally caught you" Since I really wasn't racing the guy I said "
hey, there ya go!" (Or something like that) Point is I may have 15 years on
that guy, but I also have about 50 extra pounds he doesn't have!!!
Additionally I've seen him there a couple more times and he seems to live
right close to the trail. It's an extra 6 miles for me to and from the
trail head.

Thing is if you are passing someone or they are passing you, the two of you
are not only on different bikes, but different schedules as well.

Leah, Congratulations on your "win" but maybe that guy was just finishing a
Century? Doesn't matter though as long as you got some satisfaction out of
it! ;-)

2020-04-30 Thread masmojo

Your local Hobby Lobby, Michael's or other craft store may have it;
frequently the Hemp nature of twine is not it's calling card; many times
you have to pick t up and read the label to see what it's made of! Many
times it is hemp and sometimes it's Jute (whatever that is?), But you
should be able to find something that will work there. I got a big ball of
hemp twine somewhere many years ago for like 4 bucks; a lifetime supply!

2020-04-30 Thread James Warren
It’s a beauty. Looks like a great bike. My guess is that it’s a 67 cm. Maybe a
69 and they measured Center to Center and called it 68? But it doesn’t look big
enough to be a 69.

I think those were always odd sizes in the big ones, so I doubt a 68 was made.
But who knows for sure?

Interesting how the "Bubbe" has become the "Bebe!"
Was it meant to be a kid carrier or just a stout bike that incorporated
existing forks?
I think that the Rosco has my favorite head badge of all the Rivs!

Funnily enough, I'm also thinking about Snoqualmie Pass as an option.
Currently on my SimpleOne, I'm riding a pair of tubeless Compass Hurricane
Ridges, mounted on Cliffhangers. Can't complain, other than $$$ :) Gotta
say, the SimpleOne is amazing, I get the vibe its totally underrated, but,
it's a total ripper with the right wheel set. Too bad it has only around
for, I think, one year. Kept light with minimal or no racks and the rest of
the jazz, it's one hell of an excellent ride.

They're separate projects. The Bubbe wasn't necessarily intended to be only

2020-04-30 Thread Roberta
Wow, everyone's stories and pictures just warm my heart and motivate me!
But, tonight it's storming and I don't like riding in the rain. Ann, I've
rarely seen a sky so blue. Leah, I'm impressed, but not surprised that you
went down part of that hill and up AGAIN to get in your 12 miles

For April, I did 17 rides. Not as much as many of you, but more than my
average summer month schedule. I guess my average summer month would be
3-4 rides per week, meaning about 12-16 for a month. So, I'm pretty
happy. My goal for May is more rides than in April, but it rains as much
in May as in April here (more than in Seattle).

Happy riding, everyone, in May.

2020-04-30 Thread Joseph Beuys
Let's do it! I'm in Napa. I'd be happy to meet you halfway at Sears Point
or in Napa if you are looking for a longer drive.

Thanks for reaching out!

Paul, I can't imagine running a brevet in Singapore. The routes must be
mostly, if not entirely international, with Singapore being so small and
well-connected internally (hard to find a route that doesn't have multiple
alternative connecting the same waypoints). And the heat. Oh my!

[RBW] Re: Rock n' Road Tires on a Sam Hillborne

2020-04-30 Thread Mark Roland

I found the Rock n Roads to be more capable in moderate mud and trail than
the Gravelking SK. The RnR tread is more like the RH Steilacoom, whereas
the SK is probably more akin to a Thunder Burt tread--has a bit of bite,
but looses it quicker on the rougher stuff. I'm usually not in a particular
hurry, but I don't like to feel bogged down by rubber. I find all four
tires fast enough on pavement, none have that riding in soft asphalt
feeling. (I only have the TB in 26" and more recently 650B, the other 3 all
700C. I think the RnR are underrated. They are a bit heavier, perhaps, but
I like the rubber compound. I'm building a wheelset with them in mind, to
go on my BG Hikari. Only fitting.
