Re: [RBW] Speed wobble

2020-03-24 Thread Peter White
I did an experiment some years ago. A customer was complaining about the
bike having a shimmy after he moved his saddle to the rear for a better
fit. He also kept a racktop bag filled with all sorts of stuff. This got me
to thinking, a state which is fraught with danger.

On my own touring bike, which also had a racktop bag, I put a case of 10
SRAM chains at the rear of the bag and filled up the front with a light
jacket to keep the chains at the rear. My bike shimmied badly. I stopped
and moved the chains to the front and put the jacket at the rear. No more
shimmy. I then vowed never to carry that many chains at the rear of my
racktop bag again.

Anyway, weight distribution does seem to contribute to the problem. It's
interesting that large racing frames seem to be more inclined to
shimmy than small frames. And if you look at the position of the saddle
relative to the two hubs it's going to be much closer to the rear than on a
small frame, so the weight distribution is further to the rear.

The tires ride nice, but I've been wondering if they are making the bike
feel a little more sluggish than it could be. I switched to them very
shortly after getting the bike, and I didn't really notice much of a
difference compared to the stock Kendas. I've got over 3000 miles on them
now. No flats, which is good, but I've been thinking about trying something
a little more sporty like the G-One series or maybe even the Rene Herse

The geometry chart and the pythagorean theorem tells us that the Wheelbase
of a 55 Cheviut on the geo chart is 1242mm. If you just add Front Center
to Chainstay length, you are really close at 1249mm, but the real wheelbase
is a few mm shorter because of BB drop.

2020-03-24 Thread Leah Peterson
Bill, are you sure?

I know the WB of the new 55 Chev will be 47.28 inches in the 55 cm, and the
difference between the 2 generations is supposed to be that the new Chev has
longer chainstays (and ability to take wider tires and something about brake
posts). The conversion for 1242 mm is just shy of 49 inches. So Siri says!

That's a good point which I should have mentioned in a convo I had with Roberta
about those tires. I think the stock Kendas are kind of atrocious, but it's
true that big Schwalbes with big flat protection aren't necessarily miles
better in the ride department.

Maybe we can hear from Bicycle Belle, I think she made this tire swap on her
Clem L (I know she did the swap, I can't remember if it was to Big Bens).

I have one hanging in my garage right now. Ask me what you want measured, and
be very specific (e.g. “length of the chainstay as measured from the center of
the BB spindle to the center of the rear hub”) and I will do my best to answer,
within the limits of my manky old measuring tape.

Not at all Brett! Yes, they all include a fork. In fact I just remembered
that the Sam includes the headset, bottom bracket and seatpost(Like Riv
normally does) They were in storage and I didn't have ready access over
the winter.

Cheers!

[RBW] FS: Rene Herse Tires, Teravail 700c

2020-03-24 Thread Collin A
Heyo,

I have in my possession some tires that I would like to get rid of in an
attempt to do some covid-cleaning. See below, prices include shipping:

   - One Pair of RH/Compass Bon Jon Pass 700x35 tires, standard casing. One
has the compass logo, another has the RH logo. Approximately 200 miles on
   them - *$100*
  -
*https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/tires/700c/700cx35-bon-jon-pass/

  *
   - One Pair, NIB, Teravail Rampart 700x28, durable casing - *$60*
  -
*https://teravail.com/tires/rampart#TR7275
   *
   - One Pair Teravail Cannonball 700x35, one is NIB and another has about
50 miles on it, both are the durable casing models. - $*60*
  - *https://teravail.com/tires/cannonball#TR7200
  *

These are tires that I enjoyed and think they ride quite well, but am
slowly phasing out my only remaining 700c bike so these tires need to go. I
am happy to answer any questions about performance, pros/cons, etc. Just
let me know. I'm also flexible on price, so there is that too...

I've also got a surly 8-pack rack that I'll post soonish.

Photos for those that need them:

Cheers,
Collin A in Sacramento
