[RBW] Trainers?

2020-03-18 Thread Joe Bernard
I'm sure I could learn all about this on the Google, but I'm also sure it's
going to take me down a road of fit 29-year-old guys in Lycra living a cycling
life I neither understand nor want to. So:

I was just getting back into the swing of regular (read: non-ebike) riding when
this Covid19 thing pretty much shut down my outdoors time (long story I can't
explain here). So I'm looking at my Clem L and thinking maybe I should hook it
up to an indoor trainer, but I know nothing of how these things work and how
you ride them without being bored to tears in 15 minutes. Does anyone here use
them?

[RBW] Trainers?

2020-03-18 Thread ted
I have used trainers in the past. The bored to tears thing was a real problem.
I listened to music. Some folks watch videos. These days there is also zwift
which gives a virtual group riding game like aspect to the endeavor.
Aside from boredom, riding trainers also can get painful as folks tend to have
a much more static position than when out on the road. There is also the
problem of overheating and sweat with no breeze, you’re liable to need a good
fan.
I’ll put in a favorable word for rollers over the more ubiquitous stationary
varieties. Learning to ride them well is a challenge that lends more interest
and satisfaction. At least for a while.
Good luck with finding a solution that works for you.

[RBW] Re: Trainers?

2020-03-18 Thread Garth

A very long ago I rode the original "Turbo Trainer" , then later Krietler
Rollers. The TT was most disliked as the bike itself couldn't move and it
was indoors. I'm not one for indoor or stationary "exercising". The rollers
at least you are actually riding and balancing and you realize quickly how
to handle your bike amazing well, just all in the same one place. I tried
doing these outside too, that takes care of overheating, but still I felt
like I was in a cage outdoors. If I had to do such again I'd get rollers
as all you do is get on and ride the rollers with your complete bike and no
attachments or detachments. I found them very easy to ride too, no handed,
standing etc. There is just no substitute for riding outdoors on the road
over hill and dale, all the nuance of wind and road and sun and the smells
and the people and the scenery.

In the winter I walk every day for an hour or two. I live amidst hills and
woods and steep ravines withe waterfalls unnoticed by anyone who doesn't
explore the woods right under their noses !

If I was "advised" not to leave the house because of potential danger to,
or I myself was "the threat" I'd consider the validity of that source.
Threat to/from who or what ? The "advice, the claim of power/authority" of
course. It's validity.

It's like a Mafioso coming to your house and telling you you need the
Mafia's protection. Protection from who ? The Mafioso of course. "Pay up,
heed my advice ... or else I'll be the threat to you and your home". And
so it goes with "threats" disguised as "keeping you safe". Consider the
source and their "intentions"... which are always ... "serve me and what I
tell you, all you gotta do is give up your Life to me trust me and let
me run things ... I know what's best for you. If you don't follow me, you
are against me and I will do everything in my power to let you know it, you
will pay dearly."

The Truth is Truth... ITSELF ... Indivisibly Indivisible. Truth is
not under threat , never could be and never will as there isn't anything
"else".

You know that saying .. "If God be for Me, who be against Me ?"
None, neither for OR against . simply " Perfection ... Wholeness
Indivisibility "

Yeah ... Party on indeed !... and this Party is Existence Itself .

You don't get to choose collar bones, but they do tend to choose
themselves a lot.

Still, if you can manage it, the best thing is to not crash at all.  The
point of my sending photographs along with descriptions of the crashes
at those places has been to make explicit the little-noticed dangers
that have brought others to grief in the hope that you can, forearmed
with knowledge, avoid experiencing them yourself.

[RBW] Crash Stories

2020-03-18 Thread ted
When I was fairly young (pre teen I’m pretty sure) I took a judo class at the
ymca. The first thing they focused on was “learning to fall”. Of course I
can’t be sure but I suspect that that early training is part of the reason I’ve
been lucky enough to get through several “unplanned get offs” over the
intervening decades without a broken bone.

Try not to worry, find someone to do bump and touch drills with, and maybe take
a beginner judo class. Though many folks have been seriously hurt riding a
bike, many of us have not. Though I don’t think I’ve ever met anybody who’s
ridden a lot that never fell. Please don’t fret about it too much. Usually
there is no damage or just some “road rash.

[RBW] Trainers?

2020-03-18 Thread Howard Hatten
I have the kinetic fluid trainer. It will give you a workout. It will not give
you the fun of cycling. If you think you would be satisfied riding one of those
spin bikes in your home I would recommend the fluid trainer. If you get one be
prepared for the puddles of sweat on the floor and on your bike. I ended up
buying an old 80’s trek road bike so my good bike didn’t get all salty from the
sweat.

I too learned to practice falling from age 10-up (IIRC inspired by cub
leader), and that has really helped me avoid injury in countless bicycle,
motorbike, and ski crashes over the years...

My best non-crash was riding at local market area (Granville Island) with
old rail tracks still in place. One wet day, I was riding my Fargo where
the tracks were parallel to the direction of travel, and tried to ease
across these tracks. Something did not work as hoped, and the front wheel
must have "tripped " on the rail, causing me to do a 180. I ended up still
right-side up but facing the opposite direction I had just come from!

Happily, no motor vehicles were nearby..

[RBW] Re: Trainers?

2020-03-18 Thread Ryan M.
I've had several trainers in the past, from magnetic drive ones, fluid
ones, to a Wahoo Kickr smart trainer. The best and most enjoyable I've used
is the smart trainer. Get on Zwift, or Trainer road and you don't have to
think about shifting and have proper power levels throughout the workout.
Zwift will give you some sort of gaming function, where Trainerroad is
purely workout related. You can even use the Wahoo app to control the
trainer if you don't want to up for a subscription service. I've used every
Riv I've owned on a trainer at one time or another and the bikes work great
for it.

what I like to do if I'm just looking to move the legs is stick on a movie
or a tv series, stick a easy workout on trainerroad onto my phone and just
spin for an hour or so. It's great for those days that weather-wise don't
work for outdoor riding.

I had a thought. Considering the current situation it could be fun to get ideas
on how you ride solo. I want specifics. Where, how far, what bike, how you make
it special? Do you bring coffee, bourbon, a pipe, food? Do you pedal hard or
take it easy? Maybe read at a favorite spot, meditate, whatever. Go nuts.
This could give us ideas on how to reinvent our time on the bike while we deal

I just bought a set of rollers this week for the very same reason. The
learning curve was short-- took about 15 minutes from zero to being
(mostly) comfortable.

There was more resistance than I was expecting, so it's not a bad workout
at all. A friend who used to race helped me with adjusting them and sent
links to good cycling YouTube videos. I'm going to post my laptop on a
plant stand, watch the videos (mostly to keep my eyes from wandering-- the
wobbles come fast if you stray!), and listen to my favorite radio shows.

They have a nice aural feedback that tells you how round (or not round)
your pedal stroke is. Looking forward to coming out of this ordeal
stronger, more stable, and more efficient!

Good luck, and stay safe.

My rollers won't get long enough to fit my MTBubbe, so there's one more
quirk of long bikes I guess. I'll try the 45 Clem L, just to see some time.

I do like rollers more than trainers though, for what I use 'em for.

:)

The extensions cost as much as my rollers! I could probably find the right
size extruded aluminum if I really wanted to.

Pretty cool that people ride tandems on rollers though.

[RBW] Re: How do you ride alone?

2020-03-18 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
I wave at every car (being fairly rural helps with that), which is both
friendly and increases safety. I look like a regular guy, I ride in the
right tire "lane" and I get passed slowly and curtiously 99.99% of the
time. I ride to a trailhead about 7 miles away. It is 4-5 miles, depending
what route is taken, which depends on snow/ice conditions mostly. I have a
number of spots I pipe, coffee, and write at for a few hours, then I ride
home. I write with a raw wood pencil, knife sharpened to get a tip that
writes for hours, cursive to paper on a leather folio that doubles as a lap
desk when flipped over. Coffee is home roasted, brewed at home and kept hot
in a 20oz narrow neck Kleen Kanteen thermos. Sometimes I also pray the
rosary.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: How do you ride alone?

2020-03-18 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I am the queen of riding alone...because I never have anyone to ride with.
☹️

Living out here in exile (Vegas) I have had to be creative to keep my bike
culture fresh. I’ve taken to making dumb videos that I set to music and
post to Instagram, because that’s where the bike people are. Then we chat.
Sometimes my videos showcase something beautiful I’ve found, sometimes they
show my love for my Rivendell bike, but more often than not, they’re
spoofs. Usually at my loved ones’ expense. I’ll include my video of my
“shakedown ride” for my new Clem L from this fall. And if you want more of
that kind of nonsense, all you must do is ask. What else do we have to do?
😜

I am always on my Clem L these days, and I rarely bring refreshments. I
have my favored routes which always take me somewhere pretty or to
accomplish an errand. Sometimes I stop and let the sun bake into my bones
at a park, but usually I keep moving. I love to listen to music or podcasts
or even audiobooks. Or, I make dumb videos.

What do you do?
I’ll send the video in a second post, because that’s how this platform
works, I guess.

[RBW] Re: How do you ride alone?

2020-03-18 Thread aeroperf
Well, I can give you the “do it for the exercise” version. I’ve been
riding solo for the past 5 years.

I live on a bike trail and can go either east or west. Which way I go
depends on the wind - I ride into the wind going out, so it is behind me
riding home. How hard I pedal depends on how I feel that day.

I roll out my Sam Hillborne with one bottle of water and a Snickers bar,
loop once through the neighborhood, and head down the trail. If I go east,
I typically do 14 miles. If I go west I do 9, 14, or 20 miles. That is
total for out-and-back. At the furthest point I eat the Snickers bar.
:-) When I get back I loop through the neighborhood again to cool down. I
try to get in 50 miles a week during the good months - April-October - and
slightly less during the winter. My biking goal is to beat the same
month’s mileage from the previous year.

I used to have my phone in my rear pocket and use wireless headphones. But
I found I really liked listening to what was going on around me rather than
music, so the phone went into the bike bag for emergencies.

I thought doing the same trail every ride would be boring, but it turns out
that a lot happens in a green corridor. Wildlife, trees, and even the
pavement change with the day and with the seasons. For me the wildlife
makes it special, everything from deer and foxes to Cooper’s hawks and
feral cats.

Andrew:

I ride alone a lot. It's nice to just walk out the door & hop on my bike,
without making plans. I'm lucky to live in an area with a good bike trail
system so taking the same loop doesn't become a problem. My short loop is
11 miles, and longest one frequently done is 28. The trusty Atlantis is
perfect for these rides. There's a couple of excellent parks that make
good destinations. One has extensive formal gardens, while the other one
has small lakes, and a regular group of radio control sailors that are fun
to watch. Life at bike speed is enough excitement for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: How do you ride alone?

2020-03-18 Thread Benjamin L. Kelley
I actually never really fit in with a bike community anywhere I've
lived(Currently Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY). So I ride alone by choice and by
default. I'll occasionally ride with friends that do, but not often.
Sometimes I'll chat it up with another rider in the bike paths.

What I'm taking, depends on what I'm doing. Sometimes I carry my flask,
usually pineapple rum or Rieger's Kansas City Whiskey. Sometimes a pipe.
Often, especially if I'm riding w/o a destination, or in the case I'm
riding thru a desolate area like Bushwick, I have my bluetooth speaker,
usually playing he crypto-homo rockers(Hedwig and the Angry Inch reference
to Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie) or lately, lots of Brian Eno and
Patti Smith.
Usually a film camera. Coffee I get to go iced coffee and depending on if
I've eaten or not a hard boiled egg from the bakery near my apartment.
Coldbew coffee goes into a Makeshifter Canvasworks Snackhole on the
Quickbeam. If on the steamroller I get a medium coffee in a large cup, or
a large and drink it down so it doesn't slosh out, depending on how much
time I have.
Very rarely bring food on a ride unless its a long ride, mostly I choose to
stop and grab a bite at a place along the way. Tho that might not be an
option at the current time for some of us.

I pedal hard thru the areas filled filled with people, but take it slow and
enjoy the ride most of the time.
If I see something else interesting along the way, I'll stop for it. A
pizza, a beer, a dog to pet, a picture to take, a sight to behold, etc...
A fun detour, a shortcut, a long way, go for it.

I always stop for another cyclist in need. Even if you don't have a spare
tube or a pump handy, they might have one and are bad at or don't know how
to change a tire, or just want someone to chat with while they're doing it.
Sometimes someone has a crappy wrench and you have a better one. Always
stop and check on them if you can.
Say hi to, wave, or acknowledge everyone on the same path, bike or ped. For
me usually it's a nod and raising my hand off the bars in a low wave.

I make up errands: returning books to the library, running to the grocery
store. Lately I’ve been finding the “little free libraries” and circulating
books through them.

I used to never use headphones, but now I almost always do. Music or
podcasts. I have a big network or little used MUPs around me, so I don’t
really worry about traffic.

I also bought a tandem last fall. Now my kids always want to ride with me.
So there’s one answer: grow your own riding companions.

I ride alone 99 percent of the time. I ride my ss if I'm only riding on a short
15 miles ride without a ton of incline. If I'm riding further into the country
I take my geared bike for the hills at until I'm in better shape I only have
short spurts of dirt and gravel available from my house. So road it is for me
most of the time. I have my bags so I can take things or pick up grocery's but
not so much now. I take a thermos of cold or hot coffee and some snack. Solo is
my meditation.

[RBW] Re: Group Riding / New Covid-19 World

2020-03-18 Thread Scott Calhoun
There is another perspective on this from Spain. A doctor there (who is
also a cyclist) made a video pleading with cyclists not to ride at all in
this point in this point in the outbreak as there are simply not doctors
and space to handle cycling accidents on top of the virus patients. My
daughter lives in Madrid and she and her riding friends are only riding
home trainers right now.

I'm not suggesting we are there yet, or telling others what to do, but I'm
personally only doing solo rides right now. The majority of cycling
accidents I've been involved in and know of occured on group rides. Riding
solo is risk mitigation. Keeping out of the emergency room helps everybody
at least as much as social distancing.

[RBW] My Clem Smith JR. Build revealed!

2020-03-18 Thread Tim Bantham

Hey Bunch, I am excited to share my Clem Smith build with you all. This is
my third Rivendell which will complement my Sam Hillborne and a Joe
Appaloosa. My Sam is my go-to for all kinds of riding where my Appaloosa
serves as my traditional touring bike with racks and fenders. The vision
for the Clem was to have it serve as an analog mountain bike as well as a
capable dirt tourer.

The build is modern and non-traditional in the Riv sense. This was not my
original plan but it sort of morphed into that. My first purchase for the
bike after the frame was a Son Widebody dynohub that I purchased here from
a fellow list member. The hub was black so I decided that I would make all
of the components black with a touch of gold. I had the Nitto R10 ceramic
coded in matte black along with the King cages, seatpost and lamp holder.
My good friends Candice and James at Analog cycles helped me with the
parts. As a result, a touch of Analog’s style and influence is evident in
the build. I also built the wheels myself. This was my first time building
wheels from start to finish. I want to thank Bryan from Utility Bicycles in
Kingston, NY for coaching me through that. I am super happy with how the
bike came out and especially proud because I did all of the work myself.
Not bad for a careerist with a desk job!

That's a big order Andrew. Do you mean solo for local stuff? To keep
yourself healthy, supplied, and giddy? Or do you mean solo touring? Which
is a whole 'nother ball of wax and could fill a book. Or at least a thick

[RBW] Re: How do you ride alone?

2020-03-18 Thread Andrew Huston
Craig, thinking of those local rides mostly but I’m happy to hear how you go
long and solo.

As for me, my rides are pretty short generally. Anywhere from four to 20 miles
at longest. I have small kiddos and they require (and I’m happy to give) my
time. I’m more than pleased with the length. I find some comfort in the
familiar country roads around me. Much of it is flat, low traffic, with some
gravel and woods here and there. I take a beverage, usually water but sometimes
a bourbon flask. No snacks. I’m taking my time lately, looking in the fields
for deer or turkey. Often I stop somewhere particularly quiet to soak that in.
I long for some warmer temps here in Michigan but the cold has a way of making
you feel alive.
Either my Clem H or newly acquired Kona Rove ST take me there. Flat pedals for
sure.

Tim,
A brilliantly created high end Clem. Love to see that others have no
hesitation upgrading a Clem beyond a standard build which meets so many
perfectly as an introduction to Rivendell. Jealous of your successful Wheelset
build. Looks fabulous love the color combos and emphasis down to the smallest
detail.

Happy travels; Just ride!

Tim, that Clem looks too clean! But In all seriousness, that bike looks
gorgeous. It also looks like the parts and build are super dialed, so
hopefully you won't do what I've done and slowly replaced everything on the
clem over the past 2 years :)

I hope it brings you miles of dust and mud and plenty of good stories.

2020-03-18 Thread Chris L
A co-worker showed me his wireless, bone conduction earphones, which loop
around the outside of each ear and the back of the neck. You can hear
everything that is going on around you thru your ears while at the same
time, hearing music thru bone conduction.

My first thought was that I need a set of these for bike rides.

I don't know what brand he has but this is an example of how they are worn:

[RBW] Re: Group Riding / New Covid-19 World

2020-03-18 Thread Nick Payne
Present US population ~330 million. On Johns Hopkins figures
(https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6)

so far from COVID-19 there are ~8800 deaths from 218000 cases - that's
about 4% death rate. If half the US population gets this in the next 12
months, which is a reasonable ballpark figure given that there is no
immunity and no vaccine, even if we say that the death rate is really only
2%, because a lot of mild cases have been missed, you still have
330,000,000 / 2 * 0.02 = 3.3 million deaths... Extrapolate that to the
world population, and you get about 60 million dead - pretty much the same
as the Spanish flu in 1918-20.

2020-03-18 Thread Drw
I’d classify members of my family as science-skeptical, like a number of the
higher up posts, so I am not As deeply offended as others, but I’m growing more
and more curious. I would ask what anyone who resists doing what every
scientist and expert is suggesting expects to gain from such resistance.

My father found a small flaw on a graph today and used that as evidence that
“nobody really knows what’s going on”. That seems to be the line on a bunch of
stuff. Climate change- “nobody knows everything/the jury is out.”. I don’t
understand the need to shove these tiny wedges into what we do know. Who does
it help? What does anyone gain? What do you personally gain by downplaying the
information of people who know more than you on a certain subject? Where does
the need to do that downplaying come from?

Seems like the potential damage of using irrelevant info to dismiss relevant
info is...risky.

The conversation I had today was frustrating. Excuse the venting.
