Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-06-21 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Ash. Thanks for the mini review. How does it compare to other Rivs? Have
you had a chance to ride a Clem? Clemsters are quite upright friendly!

I spoke with a Riv spokesperson and I thought he said presale in September.
But now it's starting to sound like possibly sooner, and maybe the actual
bikes will be shipping at that time? Although it could take the better part
of the summer to test the lighter bikes, so maybe that target date was...on
target. Who knows, but I am preparing by selling some stuff to build up the
bike fund account.

[RBW] Re: Tange Cup & Cone Bottom Bracket

2019-06-21 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Despite having a bin full of these, I am seriously considering one of the
new ones for my upcoming Hillibike.

Rich, if you enjoy working on bikes, I would say definitely worth the time
and investment, especially if you have never worked on a classic cup and
cone bb. The couple of folks over on iBOB who have received theirs have
remarked on the high quality.

The basic tools are not all that pricey. I'll bet you could pick up a good
used set on ebay.

I think The Cup & Cone would be an excellent name for a "bike cafe" except
that it could be confused with an ice cream shop. Too bad, that. Maybe The
Cup, The Cone, and the Scone?

2019-06-21 Thread Joe Bernard
Ash, how "upright" is the build on that Boots? I'm pretty much out of the game
for regular bikes now - I'm currently riding a Crank Forward semi-recumbent -
because of arthritis in my right hand, but am hopeful I can find a workaround
eventually. It might be worth a trip to RBW to take a spin on that bike if the
riding position sounds workable to me.

[RBW] Economical Clem

2019-06-21 Thread J Edward
I’m with what others have said—your friend is better off saving up for a Clem
and keeping an eye out for a used one. They seems to have a criminally low
resale value, it’s exactly what she’s looking for, and will be easier than
piecing together something from an old mtb.

And I say this as someone who is currently piecing together an ‘84 Schwinn High
Sierra, which is taking triple the expected time, money and effort to build and
is also looking more and more like my Clem every day.

Re: [RBW] Re: Economical Clem

2019-06-21 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I'm in this camp. I looked longingly at Rivs and bought a Surly instead.
I spent more money converting it to 650b to get the wider tires, but
(obviously) still not a Riv. I finally bought a Riv and haven't looked
back. My brother in law did the same thing. Ditched the Surly for the Riv
Sam Hillborne and has been smiling ever since.

I know that sometimes you just need something that will get the job done,
but the Riv will do that with a grin on your face, and that is worth a lot
in my book because the utilitarian bike will only be ridden when you have
to ride it, but the bike you want to ride will be ridden to be ridden, and
that's good for you and the planet.

if you are trying to do this super budget, find an old fully rigid complete
stumpjumper or rockhopper from the early 90s, add the riv accoutrements,
(swap the bars to boscos, add fenders, brooks saddle, basket+racks,
schwalbe fat tires). done deal for easily under $600. alternatively, find a
vintage MTB frameset with good clearances and build it up riv style. i have
done so many builds like this.

[RBW] Re: Where to buy Pletscher Rack Easy-Fix adapter and/or basket? [In the USA]

2019-06-21 Thread LeRoy
Thanks, especially, for the on-topic replies and the pointer to Bike 24 in
Germany. They do indeed carry the full assortment of Pletscher accessories,
including the Easy-Fix baskets, bags and rack mounts. Their prices are
fair, especially when you delete the German value added tax
(Mehrwertsteuer). However, shipping is still on the high side for a bulky
but low-priced item like a basket.

But wait, there's a bit of good news. I happened across the ThrorUSA site,
a bike supplier specializing in folding bikes and related parts and
accessories. See http://www.thorusa.com/

Among the accessories they stock is the Easy-Fix adapter plate for the
Pletscher rack. Those of you with a Clem Rack may want to take note. With
this adapter plate you can add your own basket, bag or case and have a
strong, tidy, tool-free quick-release system. The adapter plate located in
the three holes cast into the Pletscher rack, latching securely in place.
It releases by pulling the spring latch and everything comes off in one
smooth move. Scroll down to the bottom of the page linked below and check
it out. For full details on the versatility the Easy-Fix system brings to
the Clem Rack, check out the link in my original post.

http://www.thorusa.com/accessories/pletscher.htm

I've ordered the adapter plate and will post pictures with a basket
installed. I have no financial interest in the products or sites mentioned
here, apart from my purchase of the adapter plate at retail.

Thanks again for the helpful replies.

Leroy

[RBW] Re: Economical Clem

2019-06-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
(swap the bars to boscos, add fenders, brooks saddle, basket+racks,
schwalbe fat tires). done deal for easily under $600.

Bosco bars are $70
All new cables/housing and grips $40
Fenders $50
Brooks saddle $120
basket $20
Racks $100 - $300
Schwalbe fat tires $90

If you are a bike mechanic and pay yourself $0 then you just need to find
that complete Stumpjumper for easily under $100 to keep the project easily
under $600. If you are not a bike mechanic and need to pay for labor, then
you need to find somebody to pay you to take their Stumpjumper.

Not that another 'I agree' is needed, but...I agree.

If your friend is willing to keep it fairly stock and is under 5'10" (those
80s and 90s Specialized mountain bikes were not designed for taller
riders), an old Rockhopper might do the job nicely. They were really
wonderful bikes. But as Bill pointed out, replacing parts to turn it into a
Clem adds up real quick. And then you don't have a Clem. You have a
Rockhopper. Who's resale value (with all the fancy new parts) probably
still isn't too much more than what you paid for the stock bike.

There are different levels of finish for fillet brazing. I understand the
Lyon/Norther bikes are mostly Jeff just laying in the brass, not much
filing. I have an old Viscount where they obviously left it completely raw
(and some pinholes, boo.) I would imagine the Hilli-builder would do some
cleaning up and a bit of finishing, but perhaps not to the level of a
$3,000 custom bicycle.

But yeah, fillet brazing bicycles by hand takes time. And no doubt the
builder Riv is using is good.

2019-06-21 Thread sameness
