Bill's call is a good one. I spared my 8-sp Record cassette when it was at closeout prices. All my Brooks Select saddles are spared, and were bought on closeout, each right around $100. Keep an eye on the closeout stuff and buy a couple of it's something you know you're going to use. Yes, there is this prescribed notion you have to wear one or the other. I wear from road riding clothes where it makes sense to me (lighter helmet, sunglasses, gloves, bright colored windbreakers/rain jacket), and wear "comfy" clothes where it makes sense (wool tee shirts, wool pants, waterproof hiking shoes, tennis shoes, etc). I think it's because most of my riding is commuting and recreational, so I make a lot of stops, but I also ride for long periods and for long distances each outing. Hi Bill, I read your above thread and your initial ride report. I saw that you found the Roadini to be fast and stable. I am curious how it compares to your BMC in more specific ways which I attribute to "Sportiness" if you have found any to be discernible. With stouter tubing, is the Roadini less flexible than the BMC? Does either the BMC or Roadini spin up/accelerate faster (neither are racing bikes, nor do I intend to race) Which one has quicker steering? All things being equal, is one more "fun" to ride (might be hard given they are set up differently) I ask because I ride a large frame, I'm mid-40's and want a tall stack, and I want a sporty, lively ride. I'm considering a Road+ vs a Roadini. Currently, I ride a Soma ES but the stack isn't quite high enough. And I have a strong desire for an orange bike--the orange Roadini is really appealing. Thanks! Great story Leah, One thing you might tell your friend is that there is a best bike for the task at hand. Don't ride a race bike unless you are racing or need to race at your peak to keep up with the people you want to ride with. Get another bike that is comfortable, suitable to carry things on a rack and fendered with a kickstand(!) for those other rides when racing is not needed. I am more roadie than casual, and wear my clickety-clacks (road cleats on one bike, recessed MTB cleats on the others) because I believe that they will help me achieve what I want on the bike, but I am fortunate enough to have the finances and space for multiple bikes. They both go where my hips tell them to go All things being equal, is one more "fun" to ride (might be hard given they are set up differently) Both are fun I'm sorry that I don't have the sensibilities or the words to be of more help to you. I do builds with a purpose. If the build serves the purpose, I keep it. If the build doesn't serve the purpose, I move along. I think the Black Mountain and the Leo are both great foundations for a pretty broad array of builds. I think you should buy one of each, and set them up in complementary ways. I have one of each, and I'm happy about that. The bikes in my stable enable a broad array of ride-types. I don't sweat the nuances of "sportiness" that I don't care about. I dwell on enjoying the rides. This morning's ride was a 10 mile round trip into Berkeley to buy some cheese and scones at Cheese Board and a pound of coffee at Vine Street Peet's. The nuance I enjoyed the most was the accordion player outside of Cheese Board on a day so beautiful that it almost brought a tear to my eye. Especially in that neighborhood, near Chez Panisse, on a day where Anthony Bourdain chose to take his own life, I'm reminded to fret less on the things that I can allow myself to not fret about. Cycling is my meditation, builds are a form of my self-expression. "Planing", "Sportiness" and similar nuances just aren't that important to me. I will gladly put money in Mike Varley's register in the future, and I will gladly put money in Rivendell's register in the future. Choose one and enjoy it! [RBW] Keto Rivendell Commutes and 2 questions
Doing keto diet now for almost two weeks (come Tuesday). Been commuting and feel good on rides but I notice that my legs hurt/burn for the first mile or so on rides, which never happened when I ate regular, before the keto diet. Feels like the thighs haven't recharged. Though even when they recharged on former diet they never hurt (hurts like weight lifting burn now). I was wondering maybe without the sugar/carb/glycos coming in that the body hasn't figured out how to recharge after my riding without them. So I was wondering: 1. What does the body recharge with if no glyco stores are available? 2. Few of us drive a Boxster or a 911 on a daily basis or to the grocery store, and few of us must be in a 4x4 with a winch for the commute. So, the family sedan or wagon (or nowadays, the CUV) is perhaps the equivalent of a reasonably high quality, upright, plain-clothes Riv. It would be ketones. The goal of keto diet is for your body to deplete all glucose stores in your body for ketogenesis. Your body will naturally look for an alternative energy source, proteins being the next easiest source of energy. However, your body doesn't want that to happen (as it recognizes it to mean you are in danger of starvation), and it will convert body fat and fatty acids from consumed fats into ketones. [RBW] quality of bike photos on Riv website
maybe it's just me or my computer, but it seems to me the photos or the approach to photos on the website leave something to be desired. I know the bikes are gorgeous since I have owned a bunch. But the large thumbnails with the old world magnifier don't do them justice. In this day and age should it not be really easy to post hires, large photos of your stuff in order to better advertise it and sell it. In one of the actual bike descriptions they alluded to it being a chance to grab one of the last from the MUSA lot. I assume they will be better served with demo MIT Hunqs moving forward. Their brainpower and bike/frame knowledge will determine whether someone will be better off(doubtful based on Grant’s designs and current beliefs) with an old geometries of a MUSA upcharged wait for a semi-custom build. If I was in a standard frame size I would definitely convert to the MIT bikes but at 99.5 PBH eternally grateful for my XXL Hunq(better known as a 64cm Bombadil), my Toyo built 68cm Atlantis, a 68cm Custom, and a Jumbo Mt Mixte. The Atlantis and Custom were bought used (frames only). The Bombadil and Mixte frames new from Riv. Also bought full bike Clemtentine for my 6’0” daughter, 58cm Betty frame for wife from Riv also. They used to have a lightbox plug-in (click on a thumbnail and a bigger images pop up within the same browser window) on one of the previous iterations of the site. Looks like they traded that functionality for the ability to zoom in on the details of the pic at 100% of the image size. This wouldn't be possible otherwise unless the image opened up full-size in the same or another browser window, which of course gets the visitor off the "Buy Now" page. Using e-commerce sites like Shopify always involves a lot of compromise when you are dealing with all options across all devices. Thanks for all the input, all. I settled on an Abus Granit 640 (or something) from Amazon. For wheels I chose the Abus Nut fix, because several of you disliked the Pittlocks but liked the Abus. Abus' solution for saddle and seat post wouldn't work. Drw was so excited about his Hexlox for the saddle and seat post that I braved ordering overseas. I was hoping to use all one system, but I didn't have the heart to call back the local bike shop and cancel the Abus order for the quick release wheels. Now a few hundred dollars poorer, I hope I chose well. The mechanical part of biking is not my jam. I just RIDE the bike. And deck it out in Christmas lights. Terrible, I know. Howdy- Got the Compass Antelope Hills today and tried them on the Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross. Here are set clearance pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/F6d8HBxYMU3lRfNw1 I'm the pictures they are mounted on velocity dyads(18.6mm interal width) with tubes at 55 psi. [RBW] Keto Rivendell Commutes and 2 questions
1) I'm not an expert, but from what I understand, your body can metabolize glycogen from both lactate, and somewhat less efficiently from protein in your diet. I know my performance and energy levels took a real hit for a few weeks when I went low carb, and probably took 2-3 months to really bounce back. Now I can do rides of 3-4 hours without any food, and actually finish stronger. (I'm not hammering, but averaging ~150 watts, and 14-16 mph over a ride). 2) No, I actually don't get burning muscles any more. High efforts are cardio limited for me. Eventually, too much work over my aerobic threshold leaves my legs just weak and rubbery, but not burning or sore. Also, I found I don't get much if any post-ride soreness like I used to. I can do long rides, or some hard efforts that leave me spent, and feel pretty normal the next day. I do notice that all out sprints seem to suffer -- I feel I run out of steam sooner, but it isn't drastic. Maybe a 10% reduction.
