John, the rear pockets on the Reigns are not in contact with the saddle for me
(being up and outward), and that’s where I like my wallet and phone. In the
front or cargo pockets those weightly items are annoying as every motion has
them moving.

True to actual bare-skinned waist measurement?

They look to fit to the real waist rather than hips, is that accurate?

Other input?

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers questions

2018-02-21 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Patrick,
I wear 30 in most pants, and 30 Compass knickers fit as expected.

I'm not sure I understand the real waist vs hips question.

As for heartiness: I've been disappointed with the knickers. They started
to pill along the upper thighs after only a few rides. I wear wool upper
layers, perhaps a Riv-MUSA long-sleeve shirt, and I wouldn't expect pilling
so early.

YMMV,
Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers questions

2018-02-21 Thread Garth
Forgive me for "budding" in, but DP is referring to the actual waist
measurement. Just for some FYI , in the garment industry the designers call it
the "garment waist" or some may just say "actual". With the garment laid flat,
measured about 1" below the very top of the waist fabric. Many manufacturers
will gladly tell you all the actual measurements for a given article of
clothing just for the asking ! It can really help for comparing with a garment
you actually have.

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers questions

2018-02-21 Thread Deacon Patrick
Shoji, Garth is right, the actual measurement is part of my question
(manufactures often make people feel good by shifting the size of their waist:
“Wow! In XYZ jeans, Im a 34, not a 38! I’ll buy XYZ” But another aspect is the
rise. The trend is hip hugging low rider pants, which require sizing up to get
more room to wear them if you prefer (as I do) the waist to actually be at the
waist. At which point, sizing is very odd, having a lot of extra room at the
waist that has to be taken up by a belt. That’s how the Reign knickers fit, but
the fabric is thin, so not a huge deal.

Patrick

[RBW] San Francisco/Walnut Creek Trip Report

2018-02-21 Thread rob markwardt
Greetings,
Back in frosty Seattle after a fantastic trip to San Francisco/East bay.
The highlight was riding with listmember JoeB. yesterday who took me on a tour
up Mt. Diablo and then down the trails leading back to Walnut Creek and
Rivendell. If you've never been here put it on your must do list. The trails
go on for miles and it's even more spectacular than the Rivendell catalogs
make it look. Rivendell HQ is just as funky as I expectedcrammed warehouse
shop, bikes leaning all over, rides around the building on new bikes, Grant and
crew looking just like you'd expect them to. Great fun...THANK YOU JOE!
Other highlights from the weekend included riding a rental bike across the
Golden Gate bridge up into the hills behind Mill Valley and Mt. Tam. Wish I
had more time to explore this area but still had a great day...even on a
Cannodale "sport hybrid"!
Also walked miles around the city seeing the sights and checking out many
different neighborhoods. The architecture and "oldness" of the city is
amazing. Definitely a big city feel with a lot of grittiness in many areas but
a nice a change from current day Seattle where we are leveling entire blocks to
accommodate the current boom.
Thanks to Joe and others who offered me the use of there bikes...happy to
return the favor to any of you.

Spent more time soaking it in than taking pics but here's a few on my Flickr...

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers questions

2018-02-21 Thread Deacon Patrick
Great question, Lum. How much of an answer do you want? Ready? Duck! Grin.

For me, pants create a lot of fabric motion on the leg, which most people never
notice, but which adds to the “noise” my brain has to cut through to function
in the world. Shorts, less so, but can easily be more than knickers. Knickers,
cinched at the knee, allow full freedom of motion with minimal fabric motion
over the skin. Less clutter for me brain to deal with means more, better,
longer rides, and greater recovery and healing over time.

The macro concept that is part of is that we all get a daily allotment of
“brain energy” and we have to stay in the “black” like any wise budget does.
But with brain injury, instea of $10,000, I get $100 per day. And costs are
more (anyone under any kind of stress pays more in daily brain energy costs),
so while a car ride may cost a brain healthy person $5, it costs me $25.
However, riding my bike (and running) increase my daily brain budget by 50%
each day I ride. Fixed gear by 175%. So even with the “costs” of traffic noise,
I usually come out ahead. But I have to save wherever I can. Also, healing and
long term recover only happen when I am in the “black.” When something
overloads my brain and costs me $300 (three days budget) in a few seconds, I am
in debt and need three days to recover. One of the gifts of fixed gear is I can
ride even on some of these recovery (in the red) days, speeding up my “income”
and thus my recovery.

Just remember... you asked. Grin.

Patrick

Re: [RBW] Chroming a Rivendell?

2018-02-21 Thread Eric Norris
You might find someone who will do it cheaper, but if you’re looking for
bicycle-quality chrome plating, it’s not cheap. Here are Joe Bell’s prices,
which include $350 to chrome plate a fork and $500 to plate just the rear stays
and dropouts: http://www.joebell.net/pdf/JB_form_09-17_v2.pdf

Custom plating an entire frame would be prohibitively expensive.

doing this I also got an email with the request. I’d encourage you all to read

[RBW] Re: Riv request for store credits

2018-02-21 Thread BSWP

I just bought a bunch (and got email confirmation for each individual $10
store credit). It's an easy call - RBW needs the cash, and they have what
I'll be needing, down the road.

While I'm here, let me also just say how GREAT the new MUSA Can-Tuck-It
shirts are - fit, looks, feel, coolness. The green, especially, has a
shimmering color quality that shifts as you look at it from different
angles. I already have two, but need to get a couple more, for the long
haul. The sizing however, on the website, is all whack... those instruction
would have had me in a M, where the XL is the right size (I went there in
person to try on).

I bought two Snoqualmie Pass tires and one arrived with an area across the

Re: [RBW] Chroming a Rivendell?

2018-02-21 Thread Brewster Fong
Agree, besides the cost, there's the maintenance. Yes, chrome does require
some upkeep. I recently bought a used Ron Cooper bike with chrome fork. The
chrome fork probably isn't original, but it had a nice layer of rust on it.
Using a stainless scrubber, I was able to remove most of the rust without
damaging the chrome. But, there's still some pitting that can't be
removed.

So yes, you can do it and if you have the money well, it would be
different! However, if you're really going to spend the big $$$s on
chroming a Riv, then you really should have a custom! Of course, YMMV! Good
Luck!

[RBW] Roadini vs Homer

2018-02-21 Thread Tim Butterfield
It's a good thing that 54 Roadini demo is blue instead of grilver or I
would probably have it in addition to the Hail Mary. Thankfully, I don't
need another blue as I already have my Homer. I don't really have room for
another bike in my RV either. But, if it were grilver, I might have to
find a way; good thing it's not.

I really should not be having this conversation, but thinking of this has
me wondering something. My Homer is decked out with dyno, lights, fenders,
and racks. With a stripped Roadini, how much different might that be in
the riding/handling department given my current 220+ pound weight?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Roadini vs Homer

2018-02-21 Thread Brian Campbell
I think the lighter bike feels different enough to warrant having it. I
bought a used Riv Custom off the this list as a partner to my fendered and
dyno equipped Homer. There is a bout a 7lb difference between them, so not
really a huge difference but the Custom gives a different feel when riding
and I notice it most when climbing hills. More lively. Not scientific but
variety keeps riding interesting.

[RBW] Re: Chroming a Rivendell?

2018-02-21 Thread Ian A
I read one of Tony Oliver's books, mostly about touring bikes if I recall.
I do recall that he was against chrome on a bicycle, the reasoning that it
actually weakened the metal as well as adding unnecessary cost.

I'm going from memory, so I may have misremembered the reasoning against
chrome, but he was definitely against chrome.

I've always liked chrome chainstays and fork tips from an aesthetic
perspective on vintage bikes though.
