[RBW] Re: So why no Titanium Wald basket?

2015-09-10 Thread Garth
FWIW John , I thought the same thing about the Soma price, but then
shopping around online I found retailers sell the Soma and it's fence for
the same total price as the VO and free shipping. Here is one place
http://www.outsideoutfitters.com/ps-23468-1112-soma-porteur-front-cargo-rack.aspx

I'm not concerned about that it's designed for heavy loads that I don't
carry. The shape is what is appealing, and it's rock solid. It's just a
nice platform shape (14"Wx12L) and much more versatile than a mini or a
Nitto big rack or double strut front with their longer but still
narrow(traditional) (12"Lx5"W) platforms.

Titanium apparently just is easy to get and in any shape you want like
steel. This apparently makes it costlier , so would people still love their
Wald if it was well over $100 ? Likely not . There is nothing wrong with
them as they are made and *intended* . Placing one on top of a tiny
platform and expecting that small area it to bare all the stress on it is *not
it's intent* ! So would a Titanium basket used the same non-intended way
solve this problem ? I don't know . Still sounds iffy and sounds like
barking up the wrong tree .

Wald baskets are a "cheap" way to make a tiny rack a big one , but really,
I'd now rather just have a really nice big platform rack that I like to see
and discard the price or weight or if it's a "nitto" or not .

[RBW] Re: So why no Titanium Wald basket?

2015-09-10 Thread Kieran J
The Soma/VO porteur racks are not as sturdy as you might think - the fork
crown attachment hardware is quite flimsy and exhibits noticeable flex
under anything more than a modest load. It looks solid but it doesn't
really perform that well in heavy use.

There are ways to beef up that weak point - a heavier gauge tang or the
brazed-on hard mount that Anton Tutter worked into his. That said, I would
agree that the shape and size does work well with the large Wald footprint,
or with a lashed-on/bungeed-on bag with the fence thingy installed.

KJ,

I was curious about this as well, and if you look up the Soma rack, they've
added a mounting point for mid fork braze-ons.

[RBW] Re: So why no Titanium Wald basket?

2015-09-10 Thread Minh
This thread has taken such a Manny turn! I think the problem is not the
baskets but the driver! Personally i use a platrack to avoid this, mostly
because i'm clumsy and bump my basket into a lot of things. in retrospect
i think a porter rack (like a haulin colin) would make more sense then the
platrack.

FYI, this is unlikely to affect you but the Army Ten Miler is the following

[RBW] Re: So why no Titanium Wald basket?

2015-09-10 Thread John
Recently, I was changing my racks to make my Hunq easier to carry up & down
stairs, and found that my medium Wald and Nitto front rack combo (w/o
lowriders) was a couple ounces heavier than my Pass & Stow.

Since I use a bag, Capt. Hook cargo net & Irish straps to hold stuff either
way, I went with my Pass & Stow.

I like my Wald baskets, but this set up has been sturdier & way more
flexible.

[RBW] Nitto Big Front Rack + Front Fender

2015-09-10 Thread Minh
Hi all, i've got some Honjo Fenders waiting to be swapped out on my
Hillborne. Currently i'm running VO fenders with a Nitto BFR (the big rack
on the little one). These racks do not have a boss on the underside to
secure a fender. Has anyone come up with a creative way to secure this?
At the moment i have a ziptie on the rack crossbar going through a daruma
bolted (on the topside of the fender). it works but not all that elegant!

[RBW] Re: Nitto Big Front Rack + Front Fender

2015-09-10 Thread Anton Tutter
There's no true elegant fix for this since your rack doesn't have a
dedicated braze-on mount for the fender, but you can improve on the zip-tie
fix. You can get a small nylon R-clamp from your local hardware store and
attach it to the rack cross-bar. Use a spacer and bolt for the R-clip
that's long enough to reach and thread through the fender. Basically like
this example, securing a fender to a bridge without a boss on it:

[RBW] Re: Classic Bike Show + Swap Meet in Frederick MD @ Gravel & Grind, Sept 27th

2015-09-10 Thread Gravel & Grind Espresso + Bikes
There are a bunch of great dirt roads worth exploring up this way if you
are looking for something a bit off the beaten path. The covered bridges
are great but they are the tip of the iceberg in terms of good riding up
this way. The backroads have less traffic, more good climbs, bigger
views... just have to be willing to climb! I can get cue sheets from
30-100 miles going for anyone interested in combining the swap and a big
ride. You can access it all right from the shop and there is free street
parking Sundays in Frederick. Email me: james@graveandgrind (dot) com

[RBW] FYI: Saluki on Ebay

2015-09-10 Thread Minh
I'm sure most folks have searches on ebay, this one popped up this morning
and it's interesting/odd to me. From the seller, looks to be a
non-bikeshop (maybe a pawnshop?) so i don't trust the sizing and there are
no measurements (though from the pics, it looks to be a 54-56).

One odd thing, i did not know these ever came with threadless stems. and
from the (poor) pictures, there is a locknut under the stem. Would that
even fit if you went from 1" threaded to 1" threadless?

Maybe i need another cup of coffee, this just looked odd to me.

[RBW] WTB - various non-current MUSA clothing in specific sizes - pants, boosucker, blue chambray, railroad, seersucker

2015-09-10 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean

Hi, all.

   - MUSA pants XL
   - MUSA boosucker shorts in XL
   - MUSA blue chambray shirt XXL
   - MUSA railroad shirt in XXL
   - MUSA seersucker shirt in XXL

None of the items in the list are being produced right now as far as I
know. Does anyone have something in the list they'd like to part with?

Normal wear on an item is okay. I am hoping to get some more life out of

That's a wonderful story, Leah! I enjoyed every word. We live very close
to our local elementary school, and a great proportion of the neighborhood
kids walk, but I don't see them biking. It's weird. Our kids are
home-schooled, so they don't do the morning rush.
Also, I really wish my family lived close enough to yours to take you up on

Re: [RBW] Re: FYI: Saluki on Ebay

2015-09-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
That pewter Saluki appears to have a Schmidt front hub and two Schmidt
Halogen E6 lamps on it. Peter White used to sell those lamps, when they
were still made. At that time, they came configured as Primary or
Secondary. Many people ran two, and it worked.

Peter White states that you can double up LED lamps, but it is recommended
that they be the same. Mixing and matching different lamps is risky.

Here's a link to Peter White's words on the subject

http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/wiringinstructions.asp

Here's a quote: "CYO, Edelux and Syupernova E3/E3Pro headlights can all be
"doubled up", You can use two CYOs, two Edelux or two Supernova E3. But
don't mix and match between brands. That hasn't been tested."

[RBW] Re: Nitto Big Front Rack + Front Fender

2015-09-10 Thread Peter Adler
The last time this subject came up (here? iBOB? wherever), someone
suggested the Tubus SS seat stay mounts, typically used as rear rack
attachment points. This is a brilliant idea! I dope-slapped myself when I
read it; I've had Tubus mounts on my racks for years, but it had never
occurred to me that I could use them on my chainstay bridge to attach the
fender.

The Tubus mounts have a spacer between the clamp arms; they're
slenderer/more elegant than hardware store/Nitto P-clamps. The big payoff
is that they're *sized*, so you can get one that fits your tubing exactly
(14mm, 16mm, 18-19mm, 21-22mm, 24-25mm).

[RBW] FS: Parts Bin Clean Out

I spent the long weekend sorting through my parts stash and have quite a
bit to part with.

Everything is pictured, described, and priced here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/27268976@N05/albums/72157658310108362

I was thinking $5 shipping per order, some little things I'll cover, the
rack, fork, and frame would be charged at actual shipping cost.

If you have any interest, questions, think a price is out of line, etc,
please let me know.

I take Paypal and will ship within 24 hrs of payment, thanks!
