Re: [RBW] Re: Would you take the lane?

2015-04-03 Thread Tom Harrop
I live in the South of France where the streets are narrow, drivers are crazy
and there are no cyclists or bike facilities. My daily commute takes me past a
university complete with kids opening their doors, "parking" whilst talking on
the phone (people really do touch park here, and if they don't want to wait
they don't mind ramming other drivers out of their way), two lanes of traffic
going 80 in a 40 zone, buses trying to pass etc.

I try my best to not be in the way whilst simultaneously avoiding the door zone
and usually keep to the smile and wave approach. A couple of times I've lost my
cool when drivers have yelled at me... I wouldn't hurt a fly but on those
occasions being 6'5" and beardy, and swearing in broad Australian has led to a
rapid de-escalation!

That is odd, I was looking at the geometry charts on Sunday and it
definitely was not there then. The double top tube is an interesting
addition too. The 64cm would be getting closer to what I would be looking
for, but I am waiting for the 66 or 68cm to come back.

Re: [RBW] Re: Drop Bar Dirt Hillborne

2015-04-03 Thread Patrick Moore
If I had all the money in the world, I'd get local builder Chauncey
Matthews to build me a road-gauge tubed frame with Ram geometry (as far as
possible) that could fit 70 mm Knards.

Another part timer at Stevie's in Corrales has a Matthews fatbike; 4"
tires. Wonderful frame.

Aside: thinking about the sluggish turn in of the Fargo: One element is
that this frame is much more stable at slow speeds; OTOH, turn-ins require
much more active or deliberate intervention; IOW, a different riding style,
for one who is used to the "telepathic" turn in of the Rivs at their best.

up front and 12-36 in back. I rode the middle ring for most of the flats,
rode the granny gear pretty hard around Big Sur, and was very thankful for
the big ring on slight descents and the glorious 20 miles of hard tailwind
I rode into San Louis Obispo county, it helped cover some extra miles after
a day of slogging up hill after hill. V thankful I had all three rings up
front.

For sale is my wife's Terry Classic. Designed specifically for a smaller
(4'9"-5'3") lady, the frame and fork were made in Japan using the highest
quality lugged steel. The bike was custom designed by Georgena Terry, with a
smaller (24"/520) front wheel and standard (700c) rear wheel. Feel free to
Google the old Terry bikes to read more about their quality and unique design.
I believe this is the 16" model in light purple/magenta. Classy paint job!

I am selling the complete bike, with touring wheelset (Sun/XTR rear,
Weinmann/Suzue front), Planet Bike fenders, rando drop bars with short-reach
Tektro brake levers, Dura Ace brakes and Dura Ace bar-end shifters for $500
plus actual shipping costs. The tires currently mounted are 1" Panaracer in
front and 32mm Schwalbe Marathon in rear. The frame has braze-ons for front and
rear racks. I will include matching Tubus Tara and Cargo racks for $75 more to
whomever buys the bike, or $100 separately. Make an offer on the frameset +
wheelset only.

I will make a deal for a local (PDX) cash buyer.

Email me off list at the_struggler AT hotmail DOT com. Photos upon request.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam 58CM Green Machine Phil Wood Hubs Brooks Nitto

2015-04-03 Thread Hobo
Thanks for the kind words.

The tires barely fit in there. But wow are they a comfortable ride!

The TT is effectively a bit higher due the large sidewall of these tires.

Someone buy this guy! I can't ride 10 bikes!

[RBW] FS Sackville, Brand V, Patagonia, Soma, Chris King

2015-04-03 Thread EGNolan
On the sale block are the following:

Sackville Saddlesack Large: Good usable condition, but does show wear from
riding on a rack for quite a while. All zippers, buttons & snaps work
flawlessly. It's great for camping & grocery loads, but I don't use it
enough to warrant keeping it around. I'm thinking $185 shipped.

Brand V Bar Bag: Good condition, has marks from rubbing against bars &
cables. Zipper works great, I just don't use it enough. I'm thinking $50
shipped.

Patagonia Organic Cotton LS Shirt in Men's M, though it fits bigger than
MUSA branded M's. I've lost a bit of wait & this was always on the big
side, so I'm selling. Let's say $30 shipped.

Pics can be found
here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ericgnolan/sets/72157651737376525/

Offers will of course be entertained.

I also have a 54 cm Soma Double Cross f/f/hs for sale, though it isn't torn
down yet, shouldn't take long to get pics up. It's an 2011 model I believe,
a small, small dent in the top tube & comes w/ a Chris King HS for $300 +
actual shipping. Fork is matching Tange in the same ivory (nearly perfect
match to longboards) finish. I also have cr720 brakes I can leave attached
if needed.

Shipping will be handled as quickly as possible once payment is made. My
paypal is under a different/business e-mail, so please message me if
interested for payment info.

Best,
Eric N.

Maybe that's a heavier built version then the smaller one. The rack
reinforcement and handlebar attachments look really solid, but the long
stays are the weak point. They have crumpled on me, folding into the spokes
when I overloaded a basket. Nitto 32F with a basket zipped onto it has
never done that.

I bet you could justify keeping it somehow!!!

Does that large of a tire with tight clearances limit the adjustability of
the drivetrain? I see you have it set up as a true SS without a double

2015-04-03 Thread Garth

As far as I'm concerned, every bike is a single speed , ya' can only
ride one gear at a time after all . No one says ya' gotta shift if ya'
got more , and no one says ya' don't :)

More isn't any less complicated than less, and less is no more simple than
more ! There's only the One . Howz 'bout that , no mathmajician required
, every gear is a great one !

Ahahaahahahahaahaha !

I really like having a road bike with 60mm slicks. Ideally, it would be a
light-gauge steel non-disc road frame that fit tubeless Supermotos with
room for fenders. Instead of an aluminum disc brake bike with a superlong

The Sam's seem fairly low profile for a 45 mm tire. They fit nicely in

Re: [RBW] Re: Drop Bar Dirt Hillborne

2015-04-03 Thread James Warren
Regarding the bar height: when Mark builds the bike, he always cuts the brake
cables so that the bar can be at its max height. Then the user or owner can
always bring the bar lower. When freshly built Rivs are on display, they always
have the bar all the way out to show its max range. It's informative but not
prescriptive.

Take it easy with the recovery. I had a hip replaced a few years ago
due an incident, and it took me significantly longer to get full recovery
than was typical for scheduled hip replacement surgery. I don't know if
that's common, due to the trauma, or what, but it was my experience (I was
fortunate in that it was a relatively low-speed event, and the rest of the
damage was confined to my ankle and elbow.).

Please, do well and read lots of amusing things. Let us know where

Certainly, file a police report -- not only for your own benefit,
but as a civic duty. Also -- I used to sell insurance -- inform your
 own
auto insurance company and agent. UIM should cover your losses if you
 can't
 find the OP's insurance information.

[RBW] f/s 27-inch Pasela TG, new, never mounted

2015-04-03 Thread Ron Mc
I have a brand new pair of 27-inch tires, never mounted. Pasela Tourguard
27 x 1-1/8".
These are arguably the best and lightest-weight 27-inch tires made today. I
also have one new, never mounted 27 x 1-1/4"
All are folding kevlar bead with a kevlar puncture-resistant belt.
Right now, these are hard to find - none of the typical suppliers have them
in stock. When available, normal price on the TG folding bead tires is
$38/.

I'll sell these individually, as a pair, or all 3.
Would like to get $20/ each tire, $5 to ship one, $10 to ship 2 or all 3.
So $30 for one, $50 for a pair, $70 for all 3, including Priority mail (to
US)
Please reply offline.
Thanks for looking !!!

David,
Don't rush it. Take it easy, and know that all of the easy-taking is exactly

[RBW] Hypothetical 2nd Wheelset

2015-04-03 Thread Justin August
As always I am debating a 2nd wheelset as a way to avoid buying another
bike. I'm curious as to whether I should go heavier duty or lighter duty.
The facts:
- Saluki
- Current is Shimano Dynohub/XT rear to Synergies (32/36)
- Currently splits commute duties with the SimpleOne

Wants:
- One wheelset for Hetres (maybe Babyshoe Pass in the future)
- One wheelset for Cazaderos

Should I go:
OPTION 1
- Synergies with Caz
- Lighter with Hetres

OR
OPTION 2
- Synergies with Hetres
- Heavier (Atlas/VO/etc) with Caz

OR...
OPTION 3
- Lighter with Babyshoe EL
- Synergies with Hetres
- Heavier (Atlas/VO/etc) with Caz

I'm getting married in November so I think option 3 is probably a no-go.
Whatever I do now would be an intermediate step towards that. Thoughts?

[RBW] Re: Hypothetical 2nd Wheelset

2015-04-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
My eventual plan for the Hunqapillar is:

-- (Current): Atlas rims with Smart Sams for trail and rough road and
bikepacking
-- Set of lightish weight Velocity rims with Compass Barlow Pass

This will likely require barrel adjustment, or I'll get the same width as
the Atlas for the light rims. That to compliment my QB with Barlow Pass
(eventually, Clement MSOs now). I suspect it will be a while to get there,
with the short case of Clementine on the way, build kits for them etc. But
that's the long range plan (unless a Hilsen comes my way -- that's the
dream plan).

With abandon,
Patrick

2015-04-03 Thread Patrick Moore
Oh, and more recently I had 2 wheelsets for the Fargo: the off road one and
a Rhyno Lite one with Kojaks. The disk brakes made the swap relatively easy
(tho' it's hard to dial in different rotors for the same calipers).

Again, 2 bikes works better for me.

David,

Help me to understand. The rated capacity of a Nitto 32F front rack is 4.4
lbs. I have no idea what the weight capacity of a stock Wald basket is.
Are you saying roughly 5 lbs will crumple the Wald basket stays?

fact that the Smart SAMs just clear it with Silver brakes. It's a great setup,

Re: [RBW] Hypothetical 2nd Wheelset

2015-04-03 Thread cyclotourist
If you're not really carrying much, the Synergies are probably heavy enough
to go with the Caz. That said, how about a fourth option:
-Lighter with BBShoe for fast recreational rides
-Current Synergies/dynamo with Hetres for commuting/all-roundering
-A third inexpensive front wheel (Deore/Synergy?) with a Cazadero on it for
dirt.
Then swap out from Hetre to Cazadero on the existing rear wheel. Still a
bit of a hassle, but probably won't be doing it too often. And it saves the
dynamo hub from off-road abuse it probably doesn't need.

[RBW] Re: Hypothetical 2nd Wheelset

2015-04-03 Thread Surlyprof
As per my earlier posting, I now have a Hillborne with a set of 36h Mavic
A719s with Phil hubs and Schwalbe Marathon Mondials for commuting and
trails and a set of 32h Velocity Synergys with XT hubs and Compass Barlow
Pass tires for road riding. Feeling much closer to bike nirvana. That is
a 25.4mm rim and a 23mm rim. I found very little barrel adjustment was
required. The performance difference between the two are HUGE. As long as
you have the clearance (I'm not sure what the clearance is on the Saluki),
I would push the width as far as you can go on the beefier wheelset and
lean toward a supple, 35 or 38 tire on 32h Synergies (I'm loving life on
Barlow Pass). I've also found the 32h Synergies to be plenty light and
nimble. I'd lean toward setting up your current wheelset as the light set
and get a sturdier set for the touring and trails. I believe the standard
Riv sets are Velocity Atlas which are 25.4mm wide and seem plenty sturdy.
I'd also probably consult Rich Lesnik to get his thoughts before pulling
the trigger. Being a standard set, you could probably get them faster, too.

With all these Smart Sam Sams being posted, I'm now dying to replace the
Mondial 40s with some Smart Sam 45s. So much for bike nirvana. I think I
could handle a little road buzz during the commute for a truer
trail-riding Sam that looks that awesome!
