[RBW] Albastache Question

2013-11-29 Thread Matt Lynch
I'm contemplating switching Sam from Noodles to Albastache's.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to find the actual measurements for these
handlebars. What I would like to know is how far behind the neck of the
stem your Albastache's extend. I realize this won't be an exact science
and there will be differences between frames and stems, so it will be
helpful if you could also include this information. For example

   - 60cm Hillborne
   - 8cm Nitto Dirt Drop
   - x # mm or inches

The more who can provide this info the better.

Thanks,

Matt

I think it really depends on the terrain. Jan mentions that GB tires are
just not appropriate for jagged rocky terrain like shale for example. I
have been really happy with mine. I'm at over 10,000km on a set on all
manner of rough terrain, wet commuting etc. Very few flats too. This is
definitely a YMMV. I am a bit leery of the GB EL version for mixed terrain
however.

[RBW] Re: Rivendale "Hunqapillar" Re-finish powder coat completed

2013-11-29 Thread David Rainey
George,

Prep can vary depending on the frame. It is actually a pretty long
process. We media blast the frame "in house" to protect the frame. Most
commercial blasters use WAY to much pressure. We use only fine crushed
glass (no sand). We also chemical soften some finishes first if they
appear to be to hard. All our bikes are then blown out with high pressure
air and hand sanded...after that they are given an alcohol bath to and
wiped clean. After coating we face and chase the bottom bracket and
threaded openings. We are also bike mechanics so we are pretty anal about
making sure they are easy to reassemble for the customer.

We do mask and save any chrome that a custom wants preserved, we also
remove and replace the head badge.

2013-11-29 Thread David Rainey
Absolutely, we do custom lug work and detailing in whatever color the
customer wants. You can get as creative as you want with the colors and
patterns. When you get into the two color schemes the price is around
140-160.00 depending on the complexity.

[RBW] Re: Rivendale "Hunqapillar" Re-finish powder coat completed

2013-11-29 Thread David Rainey
Anton,

Actually most of our work comes from out of state. It only costs around
25-30.00 to have a frame sent in on FedEx. As for the frame modsit is
varied...we add a lot of braze-on's, rack mounts, fender mounts ect...
Customers also will want cable guides removed and re-routed or switched to
internal routing. We also do dent repair, this can be done with brass
brazing, metal filler or other techniques.

Re: [RBW] Rivendale "Hunqapillar" Re-finish powder coat completed

2013-11-29 Thread David Rainey
That is really why we started doing a "bike specific" powder coat
business. We saw what most of the commercial coaters did and we were not
impressed. 90% of the time they would apply the powder too heavy and fill
in the beautiful lug work and details of the frame. Most will not mess
around with masking lugs or pinstripe or graphics or save the head badge or
properly protect the threaded openings. The beauty of a bike is in the
details.

Hey Hugh, the Conti Tour Rides in 650B might be a good mixed surface

You might try contacting RBW, but I posted a similar question a while back
and remember one person pointing out that you could likely use the same
stem with Noodles or Albastaches. I know with the previous moustache bars
it was recommended to use a stem that was about 2cm shorter but given that
the Albastaches have a shorter reach, greater return and less drop, they
don't require as short a stem.

Hugh, I was just getting ready to suggest these tires as I read through the
thread. It's too bad Schwalbe isn't making the Mondial available in 650b.
I've become a big fan of Schwalbe Marathons as they're quite durable and
roll nice enough. Sure, they're sluggish, but so am I. Hell, i used 32mm
Marathons twice on 600k brevets, both of which were in the rain and took in
stretches of road with shoulders that were quite cluttered with debri and
had no issues. I did not want to deal with tire issues or flats in the rain
or at night. certainly don't think the tires held me back.

But since you already have the Fatty Rumpkins, just use those for a while.

Re: [RBW] Caveman Ketchup -- take one

2013-11-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Eric's recipe calls for one Anaheim pepper.

Also, I just realized that the excessive clove taste was due to my not
putting spices in a cheesecloth, but dumping them in and forgetting to take
the cloves out when I pure'd.

Next batch, I will use cheesecloth or equivalent. A gallon can of tomatoes
from Costco leaves many for several more batches.

Patrick Moore, who are ~ 1 64th of that amount today with 2 Idaho's worth
of french fries.

Cannabinoids is what I meant, Steve. Did you check out the links in my two
previous posts? Our body produces them during exercise (along with
endorphins) and they help prevent brain injury and help heal brain injury

[RBW] Re: FS- INUJIRUSHI handlebar bag

2013-11-29 Thread Corwin
Great to see this bag getting put to good use. Never made it out of the
original packaging while I had it. The really wild thing is that I live
about three miles from Jitensha. Got the bag from Mike and sold to Tom -
both of the North San Diego County area.

Thanks,

Corwin

[RBW] Today's Ride

2013-11-29 Thread Don Compton
Did you ever have a ride that started so screwed up that you're wondering
wtf I am doing here. Well, my wife and I went on our club ride, but the
start location's gate was closed. OK no big deal, we'll just drive to the
next parking lot and meet everybody. No dice. Next we park at another lot
in town and meet one of our riding buddies and we're good to go. The rest
of the club parks in another lot. Its getting late and our friend rides to
the other lot to join the main group. Well, shit happens. My wife's front
wheel is flat. WTF! I fix the flat and we ride and find that our group has
left us behind.
Anyway, it all came to a good ending. We caught up with the club and they
thought that we had left early and all was well. The real story is that
with all the B.S., the ride in the Ione, ca. was spectacular and coming
home on a gradual, rolling downhill, in 60 degree weather with little or
no wind makes you forget any of the early crap in a ride.We all ended the
ride with giant smiles. Another good ride on the Roadeo.

[RBW] Re: When to say goodbye to a bike

2013-11-29 Thread Joe K
Finally, about a week ago, I got rid of my old circa 1972 Raleigh Super
Course. It had served me well for maybe 15 years; I had it repainted and
all, but I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it (second-hand)
because it was too small for me. Amazing what the human body can get used
to.

When I ordered my Riv it turned out to be 62 cm. The Raleigh was 58.

About seven years ago I bought a reconditioned old Univega road bike, for
city/utility use, from Recycle-a-Bicycle in New York City. I've been
really happy with it; its dimensions are very close to the Riv. So it
seemed the thing to do to donate my Raleigh back to Recycle-a-Bicycle. I
support their mission, to teach youngsters a valuable skill and promote
cycling.

[RBW] speaking of overnights..

2013-11-29 Thread Manuel Acosta
Got to participate with one of Rivendells own box packer, Jenny Klug, on her
quest in gaining her s240-12.
In randonneuring one can earn a R12 by doing a 200k for 12 consecutive months.
Well in Jenny's case she wanted to get a s240 in at for every month this year.
Had the pleasure to join her on her 11th month in.

We left Rivendell HQ in typical S240 fashion, late with the darkness setting
in. Being just the two of us we had free range to go where we wanted. Dustin
showed me a quick spot last week and I had a faint idea on how to get there..

Meanwhile ... a 15 minute ride turned to a 45 minute ride. Lucky for me Jenny
was super patient and we were got there safe and sound, setting up our sleeping
abodes.
Until Jenny found out that she forgot her tent poles at RivHQ.
Nothing extra rope can't fix! We ended up ghetto rigging it into a princess
tent. We woke up to beautiful views of the Sun rising over My.Diablo...
Lovely way to start the thanksgiving break.

Pictures proved that Jenny is close to finishing her S240-12:
