[RBW] messing around with my Hunqapillar

I think that the vo or nitto adapter with suitable stem would look nicer than 
an open face quill stem. Also, it would give you more options in stem choices 
should you need to change that out. I'm not against threadless so I'm not 
bothered at all by that look. The vo page shows a look I'd find suitable on 
most any of my bikes. Ymmv.

You might also consider scoping for a set of vintage alloy Nitto hi-riser 
bars, like the ones that came on the OG '80's Stumpjumpers and such.
Pair those with a long Technomic, would be great for trail bombing and 
would have hand positions similar to the Bullmoose.

First wheelset Rich built for me, my 700c set, was on older XT hubs and 
Dyad rims;  just about perfect, for me.
The second wheelset he built for me was a 650b Synergy set, but switched to 
LX hubs because he was out of the older XT hubs. Again, a great set.
The wheelset I built myself, I used 650b A23 rims with a DH-3N72 dynohub 
with a 105 rear; they've also been trouble-free.

Common thing among all of these:  Velocity rims, Shimano hubs, and 36h for 
each wheel.  I'm not a little guy, I'm 250, I just feel 'more secure' on 
higher-spoke-count rims.   That was why I picked a N72 instead of going for 
the N80 dynohub, as it only goes to 32h; if you want a Shimano dynohub in 
36h, you have to go back to the 72.  (And, the 72 is still a good hub, 
IMHO... the 80 is a little lighter, but, I'm not a hard-core gram-counter).

I actually have another 36h N72 sitting on the shelf, for a future 
wheelbuild.  I would like a SON, I like their looks better, but, the 
Shimanos are good value.  (And, there's that other new dynohub, another to 
consider Shutter Precision?  But I want 36h instead of 32h, so, I will 
either continue using the 72 Shimanos or have to bite the bullet and switch 
to SON for 36h

I think, though, for future wheelbuilds that aren't going to involve a 
dynohub, I would look hard at White Industries.   I've had several 
wheelbuilders suggest them instead of Phils or Chris Kings...(and, no 
one has ever recommended Hope? I don't know why...)

My '97 Rivendell Road still uses its original (I believe) Phil Wood FW and
front hub on Sun CR18's.  I can't tell you the mileage (I bought it used
this spring) but they have been well ridden.  I've never felt a smoother
ride.  The Riv rolls so easily on those wheels.

However, if I were building new wheels, a set of Phil hubs would cost me
about what I paid for the whole bike.  I'd look for better priced
alternatives too.

Tony, my first choice is albas. My second choice is albas. Third? Ditto. In 
fact, I doubt there is any problem in life (bike-related or otherwise) that 
can't be solved by albas. ;)

Seriously, they have been my go to bars for many years. I can be comfortable 
with most any bar but I just love the albas (or I used to call them a-bars). 
Ymmv.

Leslie I'm in the same boat as you, at 250lbs and not a gentle rider I'm 
more comfortable with 36 spokes...  great feedback on the Shimano/Velocity 
combo.

[RBW] Re: Traveling with a bike

I agree with everything Doug said. Traveling with a bike is a hassle and 
expensive. Shipping a bike is easier, if not cheaper. You might also consider 
shipping via Amtrak. While not necessarily cheaper, the Amtrak boxes are huge 
and don't require much disassembly of the bike. You can just go to the Amtrak 
station at your convenience, pick up your bike, assemble it, and ride away, 
leaving the box behind (they might save it for your return trip if you ask). In 
this case, the Oakland Amtrak is what you need. OKJ I think.

I agree: I don't mind threadless either.  I've got two bikes with and two 
without.  The only open face quill I've seen that I like the looks of is 
the old Salsa one.

I remain a fan of Seki City knives, and also a fan usefullness, or biggest 
bang for what it costs you - that can be money or storage space.  
When Spyderco was selling out their Native Lightweight Generation 1 run for 
$20/, I bought knives for me and everybody I know.  And I liked this knife 
enough that I bought one later generation made with better steel.  Without 
wanting to light up the smoke police, before they disappeared, I bought 
several Al-Mar Havana Clippers, a wonderful little tanto + cigar cuter that 
disappears in your pocket.

[RBW] Happy New Bike Day (Orange Quickbeam Edition)!

I wasn't planning on getting a new bike, but sometimes these things
just can't be avoided! When a 60cm Quickbeam recently was offered for
sale here by Collin, I pretty much had to make it work out! And
everything came together in an amazing fashion! I took a day or so
dithering about it, but was able to still buy it. For transportation
from Walnut Creek to Redlands, I was able to press Jim W into service.
He was coming back down south after spending several weeks in the Bay
Area and was happy to help a guy out! The good people at Rivendell
even lent some storage space to the cause and let Collin drop it off
there until Jim could get by to pick it up. A lot of good people
helped make this happen, and I'm ecstatic to have a new bike!

[RBW] Request for Advice: Portland to Mount Vernon via Astoria, Olympic Peninsula, and Whidbey Island

if you are able to do a little day ride north to edison from mt vernon on 
friday saturday or sunday,
have a meal and hang out at tweets in the middle of edison.

we locals ride south from bellingham every weekend and eat there and get bread 
and cookies from the Breadfarm next door-ish and Anne's coffee
from her roasting shed on Samish Island or you can also get it from Slough 
Foods.

Head east on Bow Hilll Road and get wonderrful blueberries at the blueberrie 
farm where Nancy and Harrlan are now serving up
blueberry crepes.

Edison is the food center of the known universe at this point.
tweets is exraorrdinarry and worth the trip on its own.
Actually the scenery is worth the ride and the food is a bonus.

the mt vernon century is in september and you can do that
or follow the route on your own. It is so lovely the locals 
drive or take the bus from bellingham to mt vernon to
ride that route.

Tony, I never tried them that way because I know from the m-bar experiment it 
wouldn't be my cup of tea. I like being upright and schooching down when 
necessary by going the bar's deep bends (up front)--with elbows bent if 
necessary to get lower. When I'm descending down gnarly terrain, I want the bar 
ends (with reachable brake levers) to come up and back as much as possible--not 
low like when the a-bar upside down.

The Hubs are maintenance free, of course a freewheel, as a freehub, 
will need some maintenance at some time , but this is largely dependent on 
the actual freewheel or freehub and the conditions one rides in.   I've 
used Sachs 7 speed FW's since the 90's.  The best I've used. The cogs seem 
to wear FOREVER , as they are manufactured with more steel to being with, 
unlike cassettes which they "shave" the cog for performance, but at the 
cost of a shorter lifespan as they are already "worn" some.  Sachs FW, are 
no longer manufactured, but they do still exist ! 

  I bought most of mine in the 90's, but have found many spare cogs and 
bodies for sale at times here and on ebay.  You can still find new , old 
stock and slightly used ones on ebay. However, Euro Asia Imports lists many 
freewheels.  They do not sell to the public but deal with retailers only.

Suntour FW's are good also, and these can be found on ebay and at Euro 
Asia. Shimano sells and makes 13-28's to this day. I've not used one, but 
they appear to be okay. If you can use a 13-28, I'd say just get some of 
those, and some spares :)   I've always like FW's and hubs because of the 
independence of the two, any FW goes with any FW Hub. 

On the other hand, if you have a mind to, you can get individual cassette 
cogs and even make your own cassettes for CS hubs , at least for now. The 
way the industry is going I'm not sure if this is always going to be the 
case. If you like more than 7 speeds and or need a 11 or 12 tooth small 
cog,  this is the only way to go, but I personally prefer 7 as more means 
just more shifting !   You can't go wrong either way of course  make it 
fun and enjoy the ride :)

[RBW] Is it a bellwether? Pacenti blowing out their 559 rims for good.

Pacenti is apparently getting out of the 26" rim business.  All their 559 
rims that were previously $85 are now being blown out at $29.  They are all 
disk only.  His website is bikelugs.com

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience at New Brighton. I've
camped there a lot. Sometimes if you arrive early (before 4:30) you
can't go to the camping area right away, but that is the only trouble
I've had.

And Gayles is really, really good. When I do an overnight at New
Brighton, I don't even bring a stove. Dinner at Gayles, breakfast at
Gayles, riding food purchased at Gayles. Yum. (Not for the low-carb
crowd, though.)

[RBW] Re: 2 bikes for sale part deux

Since I am impatient and do really need the money to begin work on the 
Betty Foy, this is down to one bike for sale the ROADEO with 2 changes, I 
much prefer single speed cycling so an unwilling to give up the Pelican and 
don't really need the better wheelset below so.

Wheelset will be upgraded to a slightly used (less than 500miles) wheelset 
which is comprised of Ultegra Hubs laced to Mavic Open Pro Rims and a fancy 
lightweight 9spd SRAM cassette.  Same build, price remains $2500 including 

I am willing to sell the frame/fork and headset I will then part out the 
rest locally, am looking for $1,650 including the cost of shipping, packed 
by me in the original box, new frame alone is $2,200 plus shipping. 
 Headset is a canecreek one inch threadless, I will include the two VO 
stems (10cm +/- 6deg, 8cm +/-17deg) to allow you to dial in fit. my saddle 
height is between 72-73cm and there are enough spacers to easily get the 
handlebars both above and below the saddle, 

Pictures are still up if you need more please contact me. 

If I don't sell by labour day then off to ebay the frame will go.

The 559 MTB world is getting smaller. I hear some fairly large MTB 
companies are more or less pulling the plug on 559. Santa Cruz comes to 
mind.

I have a few of these stems, some Dimension branded, some Civia, and they are 
fantastic for the price. I'd love to see more pop top quills. Pragmatics beats 
aesthetics for me most of the time. I'm currently riding two bikes with quill 
stems the wrong length because I'm  too lazy to replace the shellacked cork 
grips on them.

With respect to Alex Wetmore, I personally find this kind of blanket 
condemnation based on a single example to be both misleading and irritating 
(and ubiquitous on the internet). I've been selling and personally using 
the 770/780 series XT hubs with the aluminum axles since they were 
introduced, and have seen no such problems, even on examples that are used 
and/or abused heavily. In my experience, they are the best bang for the 
buck, and based on sheer numbers of debilitating hub failures I've 
seen/repaired, the 770/780 XT hubs are more reliable than recent Phil 
cassette hubs.

there should be a run-off vote for the leading MSP date vs the SFO date.

I note though that as a location Minneapolis is leading 28-22. Being from
Saint Paul I may be biased but it seems like we should pick a location
first and then a date. It seems that by offering one date for San Francisco
and 2 for Minneapolis the Minneapolis vote got split. I would not be
surprised that if there were only date for Minneapolis, it would have more
votes than San Francisco.

Also, the July 19/20 date conflicts with RAGBRAI, on which I met several
RBW bunch folks.  Another vote against it for midwesterners.  I'd love to
make it to Riv HQ for any of these events, but that date rules this one out.

[RBW] Custom Appaloosa Update

Here's some fun news!  I talked with Mark at Riv and there seems to be a 
groovy design solution to having a really small frame (in the 50cm range) 
with a diagatube!  When last you tuned in (if you tuned in at all), you 
might recall (or might not) that Grant said that getting a diagatube, lugs, 
and clearance for 55mm tires and fenders was like trying to get 4 balls 
into 3 and a half holes.  Here's how it's likely to go:  26" wheels 
(already knew that) and—

—*double* small diameter old school Mixte-style diagatubes that are mitered 
and fillet brazed somewhere about the head tube. Where it's brazed to will 
be Mark Nobilette's choice; could be to the top tube, could be to the head 
tube, could be to the bottom tube.  Mark was quite excited as he described 
it.  It would be truly totally custom.

Current thinking on the build kit is as follows:
58 Boscos, Meisha's Cork (normal), Paul Thumbies + Shimano BarEnds, brake 
levers to be determined, Tange/IRD NeedL BlastR Roller Drive Headset

Phil "Rivy" Hub - Rivy 32h Rear Hub, New SON 28 32H Front Hub, 26" Aeroheat 
Rims, Schwalbe Big Bens

Sugino XD2 wide/low double Crank 40t x 26t, VP Thin Gripster pedals

Brooks Champion Flyer select, Paul Tall and Handsome seatpost

Nobody voted for the second MSP option and not the first; the two MSP
options combined have more votes only because lots of people voted for
both of them.  Everybody who voted MSP, for either date: 17. Everybody
who voted for China Camp: 22.

I hadn't considered New Brighton, but I share your liking of Gayle's; Yum!

I've lived and ridden in the SC Mtns for coming up on 15 years now, and 
surprisingly, I'd never even heard of Little Basin, even though I've ridden 
past it many times.  I checked out their website, and it looks nice, but tent 
campsites are $45/night this time of year, which I consider a bit steep unless 
we get a large crew to split the cost.  The ride from there up to Empire Grade 
sounds painfully fun though!

Is Little Basin too far? I've been curious about camping there. And I
hear that while the road from Highway 236 to Little Basin is paved,
there is a non-paved bikeable exit if you continue on; it takes you to

It's possible, I think, to camp guerrilla on Waddell Creek. I don't

I love the twin mixte style diagatubes!  Am I thinking correctly that they 
will be side-by-side from headtube back to seat tube, at which point they 
will splay out and tentaculate back near the dropouts, one curving up to a 
seatstay, the other curling down to the chainstay?  Will Mark Nobi be 
brazing on those spanning webs to attach a h2o cage onto those twin 
diagatubes?  Whatever they come up with it sounds sweet

[RBW] Is it a bellwether? Pacenti blowing out their 559 rims for good.

It wasn't too long ago that non one dared go "adventure or world touring" on 
anything other than 559 wheels because they'd be ubiquitous and therefore easy 
to replace/find a large tire selection, etc. Now this? It can only mean one 
thing: time to start hoarding discounted wheels because they're coming 
back--just like everything else, they will be "rediscovered."

I am just thinking that a 40t x 26t. double crank seems like it needs a 
middle ring.
 
40 would be too high to stay in for long, I would think, unless you are on 
dead flats or downhills, or a strong rider (I couldn't do it).
The small ring would be too light, I would think, unless doing lotsa steep 
uphills, or loaded touring.
 
Just throwing out some thoughts.

40 x 26 is plenty.  Run the numbers with any normal cassette.  Compact 
double is all most people need.  You need a triple carrying or hauling lots 
of weight, and maybe need it for serious off road riding.  But if you lay 
out the numbers, an intelligently selected compact double gives you 
everything you need and nothing you don't need.

OK, here's the 40/26 with an 11-32 10 speed cassette.   The range is 
just fine: 22" low, 98" high.  Can't be bettered.  But what happens 
inside the range?
In the terrain I ride most, I'd stay on the big ring all the way down 
the block until I was forced to shift -- and I would be forced to shift 
every time it got steep, because 39" is not enough for me on 9-10% 
grades.  What happens then?  Let's say I go from the 40 to the 28T chain 
ring.  Now I'm in a 25" gear, and that's so low I'm going to think I 
dropped the chain.  I'll be looking for a gear lower than 38 inches, 
something in the mid to low 30s.  Whatcha got?


Upshift 4 and you get a 37", just about the same as where I was. Upshift 
3 in back and I get a 33.  I can live with a 33 -- but can I live with 
having to upshift 3 each time I cross over?  I don't think so.  That 54% 
difference in the chain rings means you can't ever just shift the front 
and keep on truckin', the jump is just too much.  Unlike, for example, 
the 10-tooth difference between my 36 and 46T chain rings.  There, if 
I'm feeling lazy or the terrain is steepening fast, I just shift the 
front and go from a 52" gear to a 40.5 -- something you can live with -- 
or I can upshift 1 and get a 46, next in sequence.


What about up at the top end?  98" is a nice top end, in fact it's what 
I have now.  But where's that 88.7" I have?  Missing.  Next gear is 2 
teeth down, an 83.  That's a hole I'd trip on often.

2 people voted for all 3. 

So it's currently 20 (not msp) vs 18 (either MSP). This isn't really 
significant of a difference between the two choices. 

It's my opinion that we won't get consensus on one site or the other. I 
think it might be prudent to plan two get togethers and let the folks who 
want to go to them go to them.

1.  I would never categorize you in "most people", so you can be totally 
right about your gearing choices without disproving my assertion that most 
people can do just fine with a compact double.  :-)
2.  This is another datapoint proving that you've been unfairly maligned as 
a Jan Heine disciple.  You like cantilever brakes and triples.  If you were 
a true Jan-zealot you'd be on centerpulls and compact doubles.  Steve 
learns from many, but makes up his own mind, people!
3.  I agree that a compact double with an ultrawide cassette has big jumps. 
 What I meant by a "normal cassette" was more like an 11-26 or an 11-28 
with a 44/30.  If you cannot possibly live without a sub 22" gear then I 
agree that a triple provides better coverage.  On my touring bike I happily 
run a 3x8 where I need really low gears.  

In general I agree 300% with your approach:  Pick your high gear and your 
low gear and design it to cover the space with acceptable jumps, keeping an 
eye peeled for chain line.  Double shifts are a lot less troublesome to me 
than you make it sound when my left side shifter never has to trim.  Slam 
it against the stop for the big ring.  Slam it against the stop for the 
small ring.

FWIW I think we should have a vote on the location first then the date. As 
far as two Jamborees please don't do that to me as I'll have to go to both 
and I can assure you it will create a conflict betwixt me and my

Sort of a shame that all three sizes can't be supported and used based
on frame size. 559 is a great size for 13-15" bikes, 584 for 15-19",
and 722 for 17-21". I used MTB sizing as that's where the change is
happening the most right now.

It's a really pristine bike. Has been used, but well cared for. I
pretty much buy all my bikes in that condition (no brand new bike
since 2001), and have never been let down yet! Just stoked to have a
nice SS again. As I mentioned on flickr, should have never sold my
original one!!!

Michael, I don't know the type of tape, but it is nicer than the
average run of the mill bar tape. I noticed that right away.

It's always been one of those itches you just can't scratch... finally
satiated!

I think I still need some sort of dirt-bomb type bike, then, just
maybe, I will have all the bikes I need. Although a folder would be
cool. Maybe double squish 29er. Maybe a full on drop-bar 29er as well.
Still want a Wilbury/Glorius come to think of it...

I don't think they'll every do away with them, but they'll be
relegated to entry level bikes only. I think it's Giant that's
converting it's entire women-specific line up to 650B. Cool for the B
movement, but not so cool for the woman that wants the perfectly
rideable 26" bike.

[RBW] Recommendations for Saddle Bag--mostly for books

With a school year just about underway, I'm late to ask; looking for 
recommendations for a saddle bag--likely more flat than square--for 
ferrying books & a notebook pc on a Sam or a Heron Touring.  Each has a 
rear rack too, so panniers are another way to go, of course, but my first 
thought is for a saddle bag-style sort of brief case (behind a B-17, yup).

an 11-28 with a 44/30.  If you cannot possibly live without a sub 22" 
gear then I agree that a triple provides better coverage.  On my 
touring bike I happily run a 3x8 where I need really low gears.


Regardless of the cassette in question, the "big jump" is due to the 
53.8% difference between the chain rings.  That insures that regardless 
of the cassette, when you do a front shift you will have a big, big 
difference between gears compared to a more typical 10 or 12 tooth 
shift.You also have to decide how large spacing between gears is 
good for you, and where in the range you like it close, vs where you 
like it wider (Patrick has written extensively on his preferences here, 
as has Jan; I couldn't live with either Patrick's or Jan's.)




In general I agree 300% with your approach:  Pick your high gear and 
your low gear and design it to cover the space with acceptable jumps, 
keeping an eye peeled for chain line.  Double shifts are a lot less 
troublesome to me than you make it sound when my left side shifter 
never has to trim.  Slam it against the stop for the big ring.  Slam 
it against the stop for the small ring.


Trimming isn't a problem for me (as a bar end shifter user). If/when I 
do it, I hardly even pay it any conscious attention.  What you have to 
go through to do a double shift and stay reasonably "in sequence" is 
important to me.  I would go mad if every time I needed a gear below 40 
inches I'd have to cross over and upshift 3 or 4 at the same time, and 
I'd go mad if every time I shifted to the small ring it felt like I'd 
dropped the chain, or if every time I shifted from the small to the 
large chain ring it dropped my RPMs by half and doubled the pedal effort.

I have the 40/26 on my Sam with an 11-32? 8 speed in the back. In the 1000 
miles I've ridden I have stick shifted into the granny only once, so I haven't 
put on a front derailer yet. 
If you are going to be using the 26 more than occasionally, the detailed 
analysis from Steve seems important. 

Edwin, living 1 by 8 almost all the time.

I got a Carradice Nelson recently and like it a lot.  It's pretty big
(about Medium Sackville Saddlesack size), so you may want a smaller
Carradice like a Barley.  They're cheapish, handsome, and durable.

My jump is 47% between chainrings.  That's much bigger than the 27% jump 
from your 36 to your 46, but it is smaller than the 50% jump from your 24 
to your 36.  I don't know if I should go mad or not!

The Large Saddlesack, or the Medium Saddlesack if you want something
smaller. The advantage is the big opening, so it's easy to put books
and a laptop in, and you can also fit a sweater or jacket, your lunch,
and (with the Large) some groceries on the way home.

556for ages. Stays 
sharp, and with a drop of chain lube every year or three, 
the thing almost opens itself. 

I never really notice the "miltary grade weapon" look since the handle is 
always either clipped inside my pocket, or in my hand.

I think the Dimension stems are beautiful. Very clean welds, high
polish. And aesthetically, I don't know what's wrong with a pop-top
stem. It looks 100% fine to my eye, and being able to change bars is
835% more convenient than a traditional quill. As to threadless in
general, I definitely prefer them to threaded headsets/quills. I don't
like adjusting threaded headsets at all, but the 5mm hex adjustment on
thraeadless is just fantastic. YMMV of course :-)
