Interesting about the insurance... Curious if you have a specific rider for
your bike(s) or just general homeowner coverage.

In glad you got it back and have that option. Its a tough call given the
one-of-a-kind nature of the bike. If you keep it the bike has even more
'story' behind it now, it's famous and infamous!

Good luck with your decision, let us know how it turns out.

[RBW] Re: Practical differences - SON vs Shimano Dyno hub?

2013-08-18 Thread ascpgh
Tony:

I just got my first generator hub, a SON. I looked, watched, listened and
lurked over every post about them and once I got the ball going I couldn't
justify choosing parts other than the ones I knew I wanted to use and I am
happy to have done so. No one I spoke to ever said "next time I will get
the instead of the Schmidt". I waited,
bought smart and held out until I did not have to justify it for my
commuting use. Ditto for a very well-bought Luxos-B light. In the end I was
so close in budget that my preferences were easily justifiable. Being able
to use it on either of my bikes was the only art of the deal as I designed
it.

The first ride with the hub/wheel and light was like being a kid with my
first new bike. I had been working on our house all day, wife away on
business, had a meager supper and was tinkering with the last details to
get the generator and light up and working. It was so impressive in the
work stand that I grabbed my riding shoes, helmet and went outside to the
street. First I headed for a gap in the street lights, then I turned left,
and it just swept over me. I rode for the next two and a half hours, able
for the first time to feel not marginalized in my nighttime travel and that
included a wide array of lights from spendy rechargeable battery pack rigs
(one of which popped out of its cheap bar bracket after a meager bump,
swung on its cord's radius into the front spokes killing itself, the wheel
and nearly me), and a spectrum of cheap LED battery burners I have used in
my over-reacting response. It was one of the most simply superior
experiences I have ever had with a bike. I simply could not find enough
dark places to ride and felt like I was seeing the whole town at night for
the first time, not just trying to escape home like some roach in the
kitchen trying to scurry back to its dark place when the lights come on.

Whatever you choose, do so in a way that makes you happy in the end. I am
able to speak to that utterly pleased outcome of my years-long odyssey to
make my own light as I ride to and from work. I'll be out there more now.

Maybe just dumb luck, but I have been commuting on wonderfully smooth
rolling Grand Bois Cypres (SON hub up front) now for 7 months with no
flats. If a commuter can afford the experiment, I highly recommend trying.
After all, most people who bike commute spend more of their cycling time
on the commuter than any other bike.

Also, SON makes some great rough stuff variants. Just this week Peter
White says he is now stocking a fat wheel SON.

[RBW] Re: Practical differences - SON vs Shimano Dyno hub?

2013-08-18 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I owned a SON on a previous bike (which I have since sold), and it was an
absolutely beautiful hub... It made me think "If Phil Wood made a dynamo
hub, this would be it"... But honestly I was hard-pressed to notice
whether it gave better performance than my Shimano or SRAM dyno-hubs.

Since then I have owned several dynamos, including Shimano DH-3N70, SRAM
iLight, and Sturmey Archer X-FDD. They all performed well; the Shimano (to
me) feels like the best quality of the 3 (and for much less $ than the
SON). I've gotten some great deals on the SRAM iLight, and I really like
that hub too. The Sturmey (don't ask me why) seems like it's not quite as
powerful, but that could be my imagination. They certainly look like
amazingly well-built hubs for the $. But I can understand for certain
builds (where you want that high end quality finish), you may just have to
go with a Phil Wood, or a Chris King or a SON... the quality of the SON hub
is apparent... it's solid.

I haven't heard too many bad reviews on dynamo hubs (which is the best
news)... these days you don't have to spend much to get a quality dyno
setup on your bike. I have em on several bikes... it's just the way to go.

Re: [RBW] Re: Practical differences - SON vs Shimano Dyno hub?

2013-08-18 Thread Minh
Tony,

I have two of them (like everyone says Dynamo wheels multiply!), a older
SON28 and a SonDeluxe, i've not used the Shimano ones, but i'm inline with
your thinking, the Shimano offer great value, for most use-cases will do
what it needs to (i.e. provide power to the lights). The SON are just
prettier, i can't finger a functional delta--maybe the rolling resistance
is better but i would never be able to tell.

If you really want to see a SON in real life i can share one of my wheels,
the rims and tires will be different (and i think those make a bigger
difference).

[RBW] Practical differences - SON vs Shimano Dyno hub?

2013-08-18 Thread Jonathan Shinefeld
Hey Tony. I've run the Ultegra level Shimano generator hub for 7-8 years and
it continues to work perfectly on my daily LHT commuter. A couple years ago I
put a SON hub on my Rambouillet and don't feel any difference. They're both
great and with efficient LEDs, I run with headlights all the time. Jan Heine
says the SON is more efficient, but not so much for my riding style (slow). Im
sure performance differences are more relevant for faster riders.
If you take your front wheel off often, one difference that might matter is the
wire connectors. The Shimano uses a 1 piece connector that is very convenient
to disconnect and replace. I seem to fumble more with the individual wire
connectors on the SON.
>From my perspective, I don't think you can go wrong with either. If you're a

Of course it's exciting and fun to receive that big box from Riv with a
frame/bike in it, but the real joy begins when you can actually straddle
the saddle and pedal around. Have fun... looking forward to pics of your
adventures around Vancouver.

Excellent write up and pics. Thanks for sharing.

Two years after getting married my wife and I did a 2-month hike on the PCT

[RBW] Albas & the German Mirror

2013-08-18 Thread Michael Hechmer
I put a pair of Albas on the back of the tandem and Pat really likes them,
but complains that her hand prevents her from seeing the mirror. It is
mounted just behind the beginning of the curve and she tells me her hands
are maybe 2" from the ends. Have others encountered this problem? Where
do you mount the mirror on these bars?

[RBW] FS: Nitto Racks, Nitto Bars, Rawland Bike

2013-08-18 Thread jandrews_nyc
Greetings Earthlings

I'm raising $$$ for either a new Atlantis or Hunq frame. At some point
it's obvious that the Hillborne isn't either of those bike so I'll stop
trying to fit fenders over Dureme 50's on it and bring it back to it's
natural state.
So, I have the following for sale

   - Rawland cSogn (scroll down for description), $800 plus shipping
   - Nitto Big Front Rack, $90 plus shipping
   - Nitto Platrack, $50 plus shipping
   - Nitto Moustache Bar, $40 plus shipping
   - Nitto Jitensha Flat Bar, $45 plus shipping

Thank You
Jason

For sale is a very nice condition Rawland cSogn set up as an off-roader /
all-rounder with Pacenti Quasi-moto tires (650b x 2.0), handbuilt wheels
from Jim Thill at Hiawatha cyclery (Deore LX hubs laced to 36H Rigida
Sphinx 650b rims), Soma moustache bars, IRD high-rise satin stem (40 degree
rise), wide range double Andel cranks with steel Sugino chainrings (44T &
28T), Shimano bar-end shifters, Deore rear derailleur, wide-range 9-speed
rear cassette (12-34 I think), brand new Tektro cr720 black cantilever
brakes and other new or very low mileage parts.
I bought the bike used from Hiawatha and replaced almost every part on it
and rode for a couple months but unfortunately didn't get off-road with it
as much as I wanted to. I have too many bikes and this one needs to go to
someone who will love it. The bike is in excellent condition and would make
a great tourer too. The stem gets the bars up very high. I also have the
over-paint decals from Rawland if you'd like to put those on.
I believe it's a size Medium.
seat tube c-t: 20"/50 cm
effective top-tube c-c: 22"/56 cm
With a few adjustments it should fit most riders between 5'4" and 5'10".
*Note: The saddle is NOT included with the purchase of this bicycle

Preferably one that fits in one of the front pockets of a acorn handlebar bag.

Semi-fancy, but a great
camera:http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-LX7K-Digital-Intelligent-3-0-inch/dp/B008MB719C

Warehouse sale on one right now for $300:

Fast lens, extra-wide angle, metal body. Only negative is a craptastic
lens cap and could be a touch too big for your bag pocket, I don't
know what dimensions that has. It fits in MUSA shorts pocket fine
FWIW.

certainly haven't heard this from anyone either

Minh - I may have to take you up on that offer! As close as we are, and
riding the same paths I think we need to do a ride sometime regardless!

Jon - Great point about the connectors, I do end up taking the front wheel
off on my trek a fair amount... sometimes my wife comes into the city for
dinner or happy hour after work and I catch a ride home with her and throw
the bike in the back. I've even had some issue with the shimano disconnect
coming undone. I'll need to check out a SON in person I think as a good
next step!

Re: [RBW] camera recomendations?

2013-08-18 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Now you're really in my comfort zone, photography is my first passion...
as I'm used to using a larger SLR camera and having the benefits of
interchangeable lenses I wanted to retain that in a smaller camera. Good
news is there are bunch of small, interchangeable lens camera systems out
there now at a couple price points. That probably doesn't completelyjive
with your request for 'unfancy', but I guess it's all relative... :)

Becuase the systems are refreshed so often these days craigslist in larger
cities usually have a ton of these camera's available. Two to keep an eye
out for;

Olympus PEN series - lots of different models, and the most lens selection
Nikon One series - I'm shooting with this right now, it was kind of hated
by the blogosphere and therefore the first generation is available CHEAP.
I'd be happy to give you more info on them if you are interested.

Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Pentax... all have their entries as well. For
tons of better info on these camera's check out Thom Hogan's site -
http://www.sansmirror.com/

Aside from lens changing options, these cameras all have significantly
larger sensors than most basic compact cameras. That gives you not only
better image quality (more data captured) but better low light capability
and ability to crop later. If I was going to go witha true compact camera
I'd look at the Nikon or Olympus waterproof/shockproof options in the sub
$300 range. The added ruggedness and price point is a true 'plus' that
isn't possible with a more expensive camera.

Re: [RBW] camera recomendations?

2013-08-18 Thread Eric Norris
The Panasonic is indeed a nice camera (I have a Lumix LX-2). The biggest
downside for me is that lens cap--using the camera involves 1) extracting it
from the pocket or bag, 2) fiddling one-handed with the lens cap, which then
dangles around, 3) turning it on, 4) taking the photo, and 5) steps 3 to 1 in
reverse. (Note that I typically take photos while I'm rolling; this would all
be easier if you stopped to take a shot.)

For ease of use, I prefer my Canon SD780, a small camera that takes decent
photos and is cheap. (The latter is important because one of my cardinal rules
of cycling photography is to never use a camera too expensive to be dropped on
the pavement.) The Canon has a self-closing lens cap, an easy-to-use
Auto/Scene/Video switch, and an optical viewfinder. The movies it takes are
actually pretty good.

The only time a Canon came close to letting me down was PBP 2011, when my
camera got waterlogged on the first night. The screen didn't work right, but it
kept taking pictures for the next three days, and when it finally dried out it
worked for another year before finally giving up the ghost.

[RBW] Drag in non-direct gears on SA AW: noticeable?

2013-08-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I am contemplating a second rear wheel for my '03 Curt Custom, a fixed gear
bike, and I am thinking that, instead of all the nastiness involved with a
derailleur drivetrain, a simple hub gear might be very nice.

The gaps of the AW are so hugely absurd that it doesn't make sense, for me
at any rate, to use the middle/direct gear as my cruising gear -- what the
hell would I do with a 93" gear? So I would arrange things so that the 33%
augment in gear 3 would give me roughly 70", so that 2 would be ~53 and 1 ~
39".

But I don't want any additional significant drag -- have read the recent BQ.

But the AW, now: that one is so simple that drag ought to be much less than
with a more complex geared hub, no? Did Berto test this somewhere?

Any advice welcome.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Greetings! - 64cm Atlantis?

2013-08-18 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Minh,

That's really funny, we'll have to plan and ride the route together
sometime soon!

Today's ride up'ed the mileage to around 30m with a rainy trip to Mount
Vernon along the appropriately named Mount Vernon Trail. This is my third
attempt in this ride and the first time I made it up the last hill without
dismounting... the first time I bonked out and quit with 100 yards to go
not knowing how close I was, the second time I dumped the chain as I
attempted to downshift at about the same point, and third time is
apparantly a charm. I didn't get the opportunity to dump the chain because
apparantly my FD isn't quite dialed in yet and I couldn't get a shift to
the granny gear... oh well, I made it after all!

The brakes also got a workout when my riding partner Joe did a fairly
controlled tumble in a slick, descending S-Turn on the way back. I was
about a bike and a half length behind him riding my brakes already. Lucky
for me it was clear he was in trouble immediately on the turn and I was
already braking so I neither fell avoiding him nor ran him down... happy
for both of us. He and his bike were fine and able to complete the ride!

Re: [RBW] camera recomendations?

2013-08-18 Thread Eric Platt
The Panasonic LX series are very nice. My problem when I had an LX3 was
the mode dial turned too easily. Had a lot of photos taken during the trip
to San Diego not come out well

Right now my go-to point and shoot is one of these -
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSC-RX100-Sensor-Digital-Camera/dp/B00889ST2G/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1376866973&sr=1-1&keywords=sony+rx100

Probably too expensive for many. I like the ease of handling, build
quality and final results. Oh, and the two point and shoot modes really do
a great job for 90+ percent of the photos I take.

For less money, although slightly larger, the Sony NEX series 3 camera is
also a winner. That's my "big" camera outfit these days. Funnily enough,
I still don't throw it in the bike bag often enough.

[RBW] Re: camera recomendations?

2013-08-18 Thread ascpgh
Jack:

I'm a Canon Elph-series sucker. I like the format of the controls, others
have partially copied them and netted a confusing interface (by my
measure). Mine is small, fast, has a quality lens and a 3x optical, and up
to 12x via electronic zoom. Size of a pack of cigarettes. My current one is
older and a bit heavier than current ones (not really a detriment). I've
been happy with its battery burn time, SIM card capacity, video capability
and have recommended products in the series to family and friends since
growing comfortable and confident with this one.

My last "bike" camera was a Rollei 35s compact 35mm from my grandfather
that I used with a long shutter release and mini tripod for years (in NWA)
to document my rides since there were few others around riding what and
where I was.

[RBW] Re: How do you use YOUR Rivendell triangle?

2013-08-18 Thread Michael
I like those triangles.

But I feel safer with a reflective vest.
Level of reflective strips and bright colors are up higher, surface area
bigger, and people in front as well as back can see it.
I don't know if a vest is better for safety or not. I just feel more
comfortable with a vest.

Of course. I have a bad track record. I got hit by a car last year. Perhaps a
triangle would have been better!

[RBW] Manny Birthday Ride

2013-08-18 Thread Christopher Chen
I was able to move a work visit to the SF Bay Area to coincide with Manny's
Birthday Ride, so I was able to partake of the powdery-dirt, dead-grass
kind of riding they do around here. We had a blast, someone broke a spoke,
and I only know about one flat.

We rode up from the San Leandro BART station after noon, and took a ride
around Lake Chabot. We passed by a full Mexican Brass Band--they kicked in
right after we passed out of sight, and it was excellent to have a big tuba
motivating you. We did a fair amount of good dirt riding (actually, all of
the ride excepting the streets leading to the park was on dirt), and lots
of quick rolling trails, with good speed and pretty easy climbs.

There was one great climb out from a golf course (now I know the golf
course that Manny & Tommy got those balls from), with a side trip along
some excellent singletrack. My friend took a spill on the last little bit
to the campground, but we were able to patch him up. It's pretty obvious
that Manny is a teacher, watching him apply a bandage to my friend's hand.

Pictures prove it happened, but don't show any of the EXCELLENT food
Manny's family brought up for the party. SO MUCH CHICKEN.

PS: There was a old RockHopper that I have at my parent's house, that I
rivified the rear end the night before, with some nice parts. My parents
were mildly amused that I would fly in and immediately get to work "fixing"
this bike. When I'm down in six weeks next I'll try and fix up the
cockpit--the bars are WAY too low.

[RBW] Re: Drag in non-direct gears on SA AW: noticeable?

2013-08-18 Thread Ron Mc
two years ago when my daughter was big enough to ride a full-sized bike, I
bought her a Nexus 8- speed city bike. We replaced the 800-g city tires
with panasports 28mm and made it pretty quick. I give her gears to climb
the hills around here, by changing her chainring from 44T to 42T and upped
the rear drive sprocket from 20T to 22T. Her 8 gears are 26" to 83", the
shorter gears spaced by 6" and the tallest by 9". It's a real tree climber
and load hauler.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 47cm Betty Foy or other Rivish ride

2013-08-18 Thread DianeB
Hi Charles,
Congrats on the new Sam! I'm barely 5'2" and have, for 2 years, looked for
a used Riv or good Riv-ish style bike in a 45 or 47. I never found a used
one, but I'm sure there a a few out there that I missed. I think we're a
pretty small market...uh, no pun intended. After my 47 AHH was delivered,
I ran across a Handsome Cycles She-Devil in what appeared to be their 49.
I should have ridden it just out of curiosity, but we were doing something
else. It really looked like it would fit me; it might work for your wife.
While we were at a Denver shop, The Mindful Bike, they brought out a lovely
42 or 44 Soma mixte they were building up for a customer. So Soma must be
making something in that size. Both Public and Linus make bikes that fit
me, though they're not in the same class as Riv or Soma. Good luck and
enjoy your Sam!

[RBW] Single Track on my Big Atlantis (White Rim next?)

2013-08-18 Thread Rambouilleting Utahn
Went for a mixed terrain ride in Park City, UT today and got sucked into my
first long sections of single track on my Atlantis. I've ridden these
trails before on a front sprung mountain bike so I knew how difficult they
were. The big Atlantis (64cm) rolling 50mm Schwalbe Marathons with drop
bars, F&R racks, a basket and fenders handled superbly. At one point an
approaching party asked for directions and in mid-sentence asked "is that a
Rivendell?" "I'm from Walnut Creek and the guy behind me has one". Small
world as he was only the second person I spoke too the entire ride.

More dirt and single track to follow. Has anyone here ridden an Atlantis
(or all rounder) on The White Rim Trail in Canyonlands NP? I'm thinking
that it would be a good steed for that with a possible tire change before
heading south.

If the guys from Walnut Creek are on here, I hope you had a great time in
PC the riding here is pretty spectacular.

The current versions of these cameras are called Olympus Tough

I leave them on macro mode which focuses fine from several inches to

they work submerged to 10' and you can drop them 5'

Also hard to beat Nikon Coolpix and Pentax Optio

Re: [RBW] Re: Drag in non-direct gears on SA AW: noticeable?

2013-08-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Scott. I'm not sure this serves my purpose. First question: how is
drag in the non-direct gears? If greater than in direct, it's no better
than the AW.

If not appreciably greater, then I'd want to run 3d as a cruising gear --
~70"; in which case the drops to 2d and 3d aren't big enough.

So, how is the drag in non-direct gears for AWs and other SA 3 speed hubs?

The gaps of the AW are so hugely absurd that it doesn't make sense, for
me at any rate, to use the middle/direct gear as my cruising gear -- what
the hell would I do with a 93" gear? So I would arrange things so that the
33% augment in gear 3 would give me roughly 70", so that 2 would be ~53 and
 1 ~ 39".

But I don't want any additional significant drag -- have read the
 recent BQ.

But the AW, now: that one is so simple that drag ought to be much less
than with a more complex geared hub, no? Did Berto test this somewhere?

 Any advice welcome.

Re: [RBW] Practical differences - SON vs Shimano Dyno hub?

2013-08-18 Thread Philip Williamson
A single plug clip on the SON would be a worthwhile hack. I have an older
Schmidt and a nice Shimano, and the wire connector for the Shimano is an
elegant, useful bit. Easy to rig up (no solder), and easy to clip into the hub.
If I get another dynamo hub, it would probably be a silver disc SON, to match
the White ENO hub I just got, and I'd build an elegant 29er fixed road bike.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders wear for cycling shorts for long rides?

2013-08-18 Thread hsmitham
Update: I did an experiment this weekend and rode with regular shorts and
the Devold wool underwear on a 50 mile ride and was actually more
comfortable than with padded chamois underwear. I felt I could do a century
and have no problems. Either way I still feel the saddle but it was
noticeably better. Just thought I'd share.
