Re: [RBW] Trifecta of Big Bike Goodness for sale on the 'bay

2012-08-02 Thread Robert Zeidler
They're all mine and it's really a positive thing! I'm seriously thinning out
the herd and these are the start. The one I can't believe no one has snapped up
is the brand new Sam for much less than it would otherwise cost. I can't decide
if no one wants it or they're just being cheap (lol!)

I hope someone gets it and tours the planet, but I won't give it or for that
matter, any of this stuff, away. It's not a pressure sale, just a clearing out
of various less/seldom ridden or never-got-to-it project stuff.

Come and get it!

Re: [RBW] splits in nifty swiftys. safe or not?

2012-08-02 Thread Cyclofiend
I'd zap that photo back to the folks in Walnut Creek. They could
tell you if they had a bad run, or if they want that one back so they
can get some credit. Especially if they are new, recently received
tires.

OTOH - if I had to run 'em, I probably would - it's hard to tell the
depth of that split, and what it will do when everything is pumped up
to pressure. If it's a deep split, it's above the bead, so it should
not blow there. But, sidewalls have the least amount of thickness. My
guess is that is the overlapped casing, and the sidewall didn't quite
have enough material to completely cover it. The casing wraps up from
underneath, over the bead, so I think you are looking at the end of
the material.

hope that helps,

- Jim

Re: [RBW] You really will like this video ...

2012-08-02 Thread Cyclofiend
Beryl Burton is the real deal, and there's such a wonderful human
element to that. For some reason, I always think of her and Burt
Monro as kindred spirits. (Or if you really want to dig up the
obscure, John B. Kelly, Sr.) Something about the athletes and
endeavours of that time that did make us understand and appreciate the
humanity which went along with that. These days, the demands of elite
competitive sport seem to require such isolated and rarified air for
the participants. Everything has become so specialized. I was
talking about this last night with my wife, as we watched the Fastest
Swimmers In The World™ and the Most Incredible Gymnasts™. My thought
was that there's no "outside influence" anymore for most of them.
They've become thoroughbreds. Sequestered and trained, but rarely
with a resonant personality, or even the glimmer of other interests.

And, I do doubt that you could do otherwise these days to succeed in
international competition these days. It just isn't a lifestyle to
model for enjoyment of the sport.

[RBW] Deal on svelte clipless pedals

I bought two pairs of Shimano A600 pedals from this seller. $74 shipped
per pair.

If you are like me and sometimes like to use clipless pedals, but like
using treaded shoes, these are good quality lightweight ones that use the
Shimano cleats that you probably already have. Jan put them on his
ultimate bike, so they must be good. :)

that may be and i don't necessarily disagree. but I'm fortunate enough to
do training races with a worldcup/olympic mountain biker (Lea Davison - GO
VERMONT!!) and some other worldcup talent throughout the year and I see the
opposite. Lea is a true model for what sport should be at the highest
level - she's actively involved in VT cycling community and great role
model for aspiring young athletes (http://littlebellas.com/). Always
positive, approachable and incredibly grateful and humble. Another local
hero,Ted King (pro-tour rider), just led a ride out of Burlington to
benefit the Colorado Red Cross. That guy has a wicked sense of humor and
is pretty down to earth considering the inhuman wattage he can throw down.
And there are others ...

I realize it's probably not the norm, but there are definitely some
athletes that understand they wouldn't be where they are now without the
support of their communities, and they find ways to give back.

[RBW] Old-school 200k Frankfort to the Grand Traverse Light and back

2012-08-02 Thread Lynne Fitz
I took Bleriot along on summer vacation in Michigan, and scouted out a new
281km permanent route. This was old-school - subsisting on food I found
along the way. Given my strangely picky stomach and proclivity to bonk, it
still worked out well, even on such a hot, humid day. Of course, there is
nothing wrong with a root beer float :-)

And a wordier writeup:

[RBW] Nice tour photos

2012-08-02 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Kelly and Lynne, thanks for the photos. Compared to our mid '90s
Alaska looks wonderful; wouldn't mind those misty backgrounds! Lynne,
I expect Michigan was hotter, but not as hot as WDC in the photos that
were almost as interesting as those of the tour -- brought back
memories of 25 years ago when I lived in the District.

[RBW] Bosco and Rivet

2012-08-02 Thread Brian Hanson
I've added Bosco bars to my Riv'd '88 Miyata with a top-down shot (related
to the prior post request).

http://stonehog.wordpress.com/2012/08/02/bosco-bars/

I also picked up a Rivet Pearl to try out on my Hunqapillar. No long rides
yet, but I have some pics and a bit of a comparison with a B17 and Titanico
(SA) if you're interested.
