[RBW] Frame bags

2012-04-19 Thread Mike
Although my intention has been to reduce my number of bike bags
recently, last week I ordered a Revelate Tangle frame bag. The
intention being to use it on my Cross Check and LHT. I got it through
the Adventure Cycling Association store. It arrived yesterday and I
gotta say, I'm quite impressed with the design, material, and
construction. The fit isn't perfect but the bag isn't custom spec'd
for my CC so it's understandable that it wouldn't fit perfectly.

I'm going to use it this weekend on a 300k. It seems like a nice
alternative to a saddle bag which is hard to access while riding. And
it doesn't seem to impact handling adversely like a front bag. I don't
know that I'll pull my raincoat out and put it on while riding using
this, but for rooting around for food or my camera it seems almost as
easy as dealing with a front bag.

I'm planning on doing some ultralight over-nights this summer and the
combination of the frame bag and my Carradice Nelson will work quite
well. I could probably get by with just the Nelson but the Tangle will
give me just that little bit of space I desire.

It definitely won't fit well on my Hilsen but I couldn't help but
think that a frame bag made out of the same material as the
SaddleSacks would be fantastic. Even a smallish one that mounted up to
the HT, TT, DT junction would be great. I'm curious what others think.
Anyone else out there have experience with frame bags? Between
Rivendell, Carradice, Ortlieb and others there's a lot of great
options for storing gear but I can't help thinking it would be nice to
have a frame bag custom made for my Hilsen.

[RBW] Frame bags

2012-04-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Love the Revelate stuff, especially the Tangle bags and the feed bag. They're
not tweedy or waxed canvas or all that in line with the usual Riv aesthetic,
but they're really nicely made and well designed. The L size Tangle can fit a
3L water bladder (with the hose sticking out where you can take a drink) and
still have room for various tools, tubes, pump, camera, etc.

Hey,

If anyone's interested in unloading their 66cm Quickbeam please let me

Or even better yet, if anyone wants to trade a 66cm for 68 with a Joe

ideal.

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Frame bags

2012-04-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
You'll have to find the dimensions somewhere and compare. Or just email
Eric at Revelate and ask him. He's done lots of bags for Fargos, so he
knows them well.

An 18" Pugsley framebag fit my 18" Troll no problem. And a 20" Pugsley bag
fits an 18" Pugsley from the previous generation of that model, which had a
more open triangle than the current version.

[RBW] Re: Frame bags

2012-04-19 Thread Mike
Patrick, the large size Tangle bag is designed for bikes with a TT of
58 to 60cm if I remember correctly. The Pika saddlebag is aimed at
small sized 29ers where tire to the underside of saddle space is
limited but would also work on a road bike. It's unfortunate that the
Gas Tank doesn't work well on road type bikes. I sent an email to RBW
a while back inquiring if they had any plans to do a Gas Tank type bag
and they said no. There are other options but it does seem like a Gas
Tank type bag made from that green Sackville materia would be nice.

Re: [RBW] Re: Frame bags

2012-04-19 Thread Joe Broach
I've had one of the old Jandd frame bags a long time. It's not as big
as the Revelate Tangle, but it holds as much as 3 jersey pockets
would. Also true that it doesn't affect handling in any noticeable
way. Two things to consider: if you're a top tube brusher like I am,
you'll be swish swishing your way along. I've actually rubbed the
inside of my knees raw on longish rides. Also, they aren't ideal for
frames with pump pegs. You'll have to protect the front of the bag
somehow. I used duct tape with some success.

I think I might try a tangle despite the likely knee rub. I should
just learn to pedal like a normal person.

[RBW] Re: Frame bags

2012-04-19 Thread Smitty
The guys at VeloDirt seem to make pretty good use of frame
packs.
I'd be more inclined to want a skinny one just for carrying long items like
tent and fishing poles. One advantage of the 2tt is that you can leave the
frame pump under the upper tt and put a frame bag under the lower tt.

[RBW] Sam possibly for sale

2012-04-19 Thread Duplomacette
I am seeing if anybody in the Mpls/St. Paul area is interested in a 52
orange Waterford Sam complete. I'm not completely opposed to shipping
but a local sale would be easier for both parties. The bike was built
up at Hiawatha Cyclery and has a guesstimated 500-1000 miles on it. I
certainly don't NEED to sell it but if it went to a good home for the
right price I'd be willing to part with it and make room in my already
cramped garage for my new Riv. I can email the build list to anyone
interested.

[RBW] FS;1982 Trek 728 F&F 22.5"; MUSA Ancestral Rivendell?

2012-04-19 Thread Marc Schwartz

Hiya Bunchsters!

I am selling my Wisconsin-made 1982 Trek 728 frame and fork, sized at 22.5"
square with the long 47cm chainstays. Very good to excellent condition with a
few small chips in the Imron paint, no dents or dings, decals all fine and
intact, original headset and bottom bracket, both smooth. Standard diameter
lugged Reynolds 531 frame, 531 fork. Built long and low for 27" wheels, will
easily take 700c with long reach Tektros or centerpulls. See
http://www.vintage-trek.com/images/trek/Trek3pg8.jpg for original brochure
description.

This frame may indeed have influenced the design of the Riv Long 'n Low and its
offspring. The lugged and brazed steel construction and comfortable, practical
geometry are surely in the Rivendell, or pre-Rivendell mode. I own Bleriot and
Heron Touring frames, both of which render this fine frame redundant to my
stable and therefore, for sale.

I am asking $350 including Shipping to CONUS. Paypal, por favor. Please
inquire for photos and more info to mschw...@nmsu.edu.
Thank you all for your consideration.

Thanks,
Marc

[RBW] Re: Frame bags

2012-04-19 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Berthoud makes a tiny frame bag that is probably like half-a-Keven's in useful
capacity but which is made of nice materials and fits with the general RBW
aesthetic somewhat. It does not do the carrying-the-bike-up-the-stairs thing
well. The penchant Berthoud has for "Klick-Fix" attachments is interesting and
not my favorite thing. But I have used that frame bag and enjoyed it. It's been
available at Ben's:

http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=146_2328&products_id=12830

I used a JAndD frame bag for a while and found it useful too. Not particularly
RBW-ish in style. But man is it priced right compared to the others I've seen.

http://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FFP

Of course, there's always Guu Watanabe. I wonder if there's any bag they
wouldn't make. Whatever it was, I'd expect it to be aesthetically
RBW-consistent. But man those prices are lofty, even after you convert them to
USD!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: Friction Shifting and Riding Tips?

2012-04-19 Thread Frank Brose
Joes' advice is great. It's simple stuff. It's like learning to ride a
bikeonce you figure it out (and that's not to tough) you just get
better. I prefer it but it's what I learned on and still think it's as
good as it gets. You have to dance on the pedals so to speak. In
fact, given my choice of any type of shifting I could put on a bike,
it would be downtube or bar con friction. Get to know it and I think
you'll enjoy it.

Hi, My Name is Marc and I am
Yeah you know where I'm going with this. I bought a Hunq last year and
love it so much I wanted a lighter version of the same geometry for
skinnier tires. I pre-ordered a blue Hillborne also. The prospect of a
near 20% discount was what pushed me over the edge. I swear I can quit
whenever I want!
Welcome, it sounds like a similar build. I'm going to try the new Bosco

[RBW] Carradice bar bag WTB

2012-04-19 Thread Sam Powrie

Hi Folks,

I'm seeking a bar bag made for RBW by Carradice a few years ago. It's
the one with one large pocket in front of the bars and two smaller
ones behind facing the rider. I think it morphed into what was known
as the 'Hobo Bag'. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has one for sale.
I'm on Australia - long way from Riv-central (but I get by)!

All the best,
Savvas.

[RBW] Re: Trade 58 Saluki for Atlantis

I'd love a canti-luki, but I'd also love to have a 58cm Atlantis.

I've been thinking it would be fun to do a little temporary swap of my 56cm
Bombadil for a 58cm Atlantis, but then I realize I never want to let go.
Bicycle flux must always be positive. I'm like roach motel for bikes.

Re: [RBW] Do generator hub lights attach/detach easily to front racks?

2012-04-19 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I would say not really easy to detach. All the lights I've seen have
a wire that goes all the way to the generator, so you'll have to
unplug the wire from the hub and extricate the wire to detach the
light. There may be lights out there with a plug at the light, but I
have not seen them. You could probably rig the light clamp to be quick
release if it's attached to the bars, but if you're bolting it to the
rack, then maybe you can use a wing nut that you can unscrew with your
fingers...

Re: [RBW] Do generator hub lights attach/detach easily to front racks?

2012-04-19 Thread Minh
Most lights have spade connectors so you cold disconnect them pretty easily and
then work up a mount quick release but I'd suggest another approach, just use
cheap led dyno lights. I have some that are quite bright, less then $20, and
don't look sexy. It's plenty bright for city riding. Even the $40 lights
aren't too sexy and if someone goes to the trouble of unbolting your light they
are just as likely to take other parts too.

[RBW] Re: Do generator hub lights attach/detach easily to front racks?

2012-04-19 Thread Imladris
Take a look at Peter White's website for information on lights and
hubs (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/lightingsystems.htm). You should
be able to unplug at the light without disconnecting the entire wire,
but you will need to find mounts for your lights that are quick to
release. The generator hub, however, is usually more expensive than
the lights, so make sure the wheel is well secured.

In a word, no. Every light attachment seems to be a custom

60 cm, in other words? (for it is well known that 60 cm is the perfect

No, seriously, what's the seat tube length? I was trying to place your

[RBW] Fausto's compared to Alberto's riding position.

2012-04-19 Thread PATRICK MOORE
http://ruedatropical.com/2010/06/bike-fit-from-coppi-to-contador/

And note that Fausto could easily get as low as Albert in the hooks by
simply bending his elbows. I discovered that having the bar 2 cm above
the saddle on the Fargo didn't mean that I could not get low: if I
bent my elbows 90 degrees I was as low as in the hooks of my road
bikes with bar 2 cm below saddle, tho' shallower drop.

OTOH, I did just the other day reduce the Noodles on the Fargo to even
with saddle because I feel that it gives me better weight
distribution. The hoods are still high enough for long distance
comfort and the hooks for 10 miles at a stretch and the lower flats
and ramps don't feel as tippy.

I expect that really high bars work better with a more forward saddle
position -- am I right? At any rate, my principal beef with very high
bars, even if the bar allows one to bend over to use the important
back and gluteus muscles, is that, when I sit up, I feel as if the
front end is very vague.

Re: [RBW] Re: Do generator hub lights attach/detach easily to front racks?

2012-04-19 Thread PATRICK MOORE
You could easily rig up a QR (spade connectors, say) for the wire near
the lamp and attach the lamp to the bracket with a wingnut. The hassle
would be to repeatedly have to find that elusive "just right" lamp
angle when you re-install.

Speaking of cheap ($40) 3 AAA or 4 AA led lights: these have improved
hugely since the appearance of those old Cateyes in the early '90s.
I've not used the PB Blaze 2 w, but I expect that it is as good as the
mid-'00s one-piece LED - cum- rechargeable battery unit ($130 list
circa 2005) that I also owned, given the power of the less
sophisticated 1 w models.

And compare the old Vistalites with any modern blinkie.

That said, there is much to be said for a dynamo powered light -- the
best have better beam patterns than any battery light I've used, cheap
or expensive and more power than the cheap ones.

I wonder what would happen if you attached your dynamo power and
ground wires to a cheap LED battery lamp?

[RBW] Re: FS: Near-mint Nigel Smythe Li'l Loafer

2012-04-19 Thread Scot Brooks
Ok, Here are the photos in an imgur album http://imgur.com/a/3tmG8#0

When I took it off the rack, I noticed a little wear and I've featured it
heavily in the photos. Anyway, that's that. Feel free to ask any questions
you like.

A sign of the End Times: Patrick Moore has raised his bars to saddle

I hope you like it.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil color

2012-04-19 Thread Joe Bernard
It's paint. William's right, it shows up very well in the YouTube video.
I'm still not sure what to call it, other than "pretty".

[RBW] Re: Do generator hub lights attach/detach easily to front racks?

2012-04-19 Thread Smitty
For me part of the beauty of dynamo lights is that they're part of the
bike. I feel like the risk of having my lights stolen (from a dynamo
set-up) is about the same as someone stealing my seat, handlebars, brakes,
racks, or anything that can be un-bolted.

[RBW] My Jack Brown blues for your greens

2012-04-19 Thread nathan
I have a pair of lightly used (100-200 miles) Jack Brown blues that I'd
like to trade for a pair of lightly used Jack Brown greens. Is anyone
interested in such a trade?
