[RBW] Re: I really dislike sales tax

2011-11-04 Thread Leslie
60/day! That's why there was a lack of box-art (I always look for sharpie
sketches on boxes from Riv). (Is that a new-bike-thing only?)

Yeah, when the tubes/tires/roll arrived the other day, I was expecting a
box half the size, was surprised; but I'm *not* complaining, it came
quickly, w/ everything ordered, etc., no problems at all. But, Jenny
getting 60 out in a day, she's hustlin'!

Go Jenny!

[RBW] New custom Saluki substitute

Heh, yeah-it's not a Riv so I've resisted. It turned out well--fits
me well and rides nicely. Some of the little details aren't quite as
sorted as I'd hoped--the builder didn't have much experience producing
Rivish frames, and was in the middle of a move when we did business,
so things got confused. But overall, I'm pretty satisfied with it.

It's steeper angled (seat-tube mainly--front geometry is based on my
650b Quickbeam) and sportier than the Saluki, fits Hetres with fenders
easily, and, being built of a lighter tubeset, suits my weight and
riding style a bit better.

[RBW] WTT or WTB: Marathon Dureme 40's

2011-11-04 Thread jandrews_nyc
Hi,
I have a new pair of Marathon Dureme 50's that I've ridden for no more than
10 miles. They are excellent and so much fun, but I can't realistically
use them on my Hillborne with Fenders. I'd like to trade for a new pair
of Marathon Dureme 40's. I've thought of keeping them and using them
sans-fenders once in awhile...and I may still do that, but just putting the
feelers out there. Does anyone have a pair of 40's they like to sell or
trade for 50's?
thanks
Jason

I've been building a fair number of wheels on the White Industries hubs,
and compared to some other high-end hubs, they seem to be a bargain in
terms of price and quality. For my own bikes, I've gradually been thinning
the herd of boutique parts, and now my hub of choice is the Shimano XT 770

In my recent experience, the team is getting so efficient that they
actually sent me an order in advance of placing it! Well, actually I was
surprised last week when a box showed up from Riv unexpectedly that
contained the same items I had received the week before. (It's fun enough
getting one you expect, but coming home to a surprise package really got my
heart racing.) Both were very nicely packed! Box #2 is going back this
weekend of course, after I alerted the team and was assured that it was not
some glitch with the new site. BTW, it's a few last bits for my silver
Bombadil, so stay tuned for more pics this weekend.

The Toyo built 650B shows the same BB set up, chain stays. amd drop outs
as the Saluki. The Wf'd 700 has typical WI details. The Hillbornes made
there has the same drop outs for example, and I think the same plastic
screw on cable guides.

I strongly prefer the look of un dented stays, but it may not matter to
others.

2011-11-04 Thread Michael_S
The 756 model has cro-mo axles, the later models switched to aluminum axles
to save weight. Due to the lower mechanical properties of aluminum they
had to make the axle larger in diameter which resulted in making the ball
bearings smaller to fit inside the hub body. Now whether this decreases the
life of the bearings I have not seen any data that reflects that, but in
general larger ball bearing are a good thing.

[RBW] Re: build differences in hilsens

2011-11-04 Thread Allan in Portland
I think the differences are more vintage than wheel size. FWIW, my
Waterford Hilsen (my recollection is Waterford frames are identifiable by
the 3rd set of bottle bosses) is 700C and has all the same distinguishing
features of the 650B in the photos you posted.

Or maybe it's a 650B and I've not noticed! :-) It has Silver brakes and the
pads are dead center of the slot. I've read somewhere that's the mark of a
builder that doesn't trust his tape measure. ;-) Though, I'm not sure I
could take a bottom bracket any lower though. I've struck either my foot or
the pedal on the pavement pedaling through a turn probably a half dozen
times in the last few months. Fortunately, they've all been grazing
strikes. Just enough to get my attention and make me gulp. Once as I
teenage I had a hard pedal strike lift the back wheel off the ground and
laid me over flat on my side to skid my ankle, hip, and elbow about to the
bone. It haunts me still.

Subject: RE: [RBW] Shimano CX70 cantilever?

I've not set up the R550's but I've ridden them and they're the brake that made
me buy the CX70, which ahs a similar fixed straddle cable set up and geometry.

W/out looking/comparing the two, I'd guess the 70's are shimano'd - nicer
finish, and slightly lighter - than the 550's, but it's possible they could be
a different geo.

If you like brakes where you squeeze the lever all the way through to modulate,
then you'll dig these brakes (both 550 and 70's). Set up properly, the levers
don't bottom out, but you get a full handful of braking to skid.

If you like more of the v-brake feel, where you're instantly grabbing/stopping
when you grab the brake, then you may not like them as much.

[RBW] FS 1984 Stumpjumper Sport

2011-11-04 Thread brian feltovich
A very Riv-ish bike needs a new home. This is one of the very very early
production mountain bikes...Specialized Stumpjumper Sport from 1984, I
believe. My understanding is that the first Stumpy was in '83 and then they
came out with the Sport model.

Great all-around frame for city riding, gravel cruising, or sliding around
fire road downhill runs as originally intended. Biplane fork crown and
super slack frame angles. Paint in good condition with a few spots of
touch up. Fender mounts and room for fat tires...a poor man's Atlantis!

This was purchased from Hiawatha Cyclery about five years ago and has a
sticker from a bike shop in Oceanside, CA, which is probably the original
seller.

Current setup:
Brooks Flyer Special sprung saddle
Paul Neo-Retro canti brakes
Riv Bullmoose bar
No name seat post (Kalloy?)
Tektro mtn levers
Thumbies and 9 sp barcon shifters
Sugino triple (not sure which model)
Shimano 11-32 cassette
LX derailleurs, front and rear
Wheels: Deore LX hubs, not sure of rims
Jagwire cables

Sizing: TT is 57cm c-t-c and seat tube is 55cm c-t-c. I'm 6 ft. and it fits
fine.

Pricing: $750 plus actual shipping. I'll have it packed by my LBS and they
do a great job.

Questions? Offers? Complaints? Let me know. I hate to sell the bike, but
the garage is filling up and something has to go.

[RBW] Question: Best Shiny Bits Cleaning Goop

2011-11-04 Thread Bill Carter
I recently acquired an 84 Trek 560 from ebay for a project bike, and
possibly to resell later. It is basically sound but in bad need of some
TLC and elbow grease. What is the best product (or products) to remove
oxidation and restore the luster to brake calipers, stems, posts and the
like? The paint is also rough in places, so any other restoration tips
would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Adding another voice to the "ride it cracked" crowd. I've installed,
ridden, and otherwise abused BBs with a crack all of the way across the

once ground most of the threads off the drive side of a cartridge BB
because the frame wasn't threaded all of the way into the shell, and no
shops have french threaded BB taps anymore.

[RBW] Re: Question: Best Shiny Bits Cleaning Goop

2011-11-04 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
It's going to vary by the actual material you are cleaning. If you have
chromed parts, you have to watch that you don't remove the chrome layer.
For regular aluminum there's not that specific issue, although if it's a
highly polished finish, things won't match. Very fine steel wool is a good
place to start.

It also depends a lot on how badly things are oxidized. I've used Flitz on
aluminum parts which were polished and had acceptable results.

For general restoration questions such as this, you might want to check
through the iBob list archives as well, and I think there may still be a
bicycle restoration group over on Yahoo. There's a good deal of knowledge
posted out there already.

best of luck with your Trek,

- Jim

Re: [RBW] Re: New custom Saluki substitute

2011-11-04 Thread Steven Frederick
Yeah, I like V-brakes. Not classic looking but easier to set up, I
like the way they look and work, and the shape of the newer Cane Creek
V-lever's brake hood is comfortable for me. I set them up in 10
minutes and they're squeal free, powerful and I have no trouble with
modulation. YMMV as they say. B-)

I love that color-inspired by the 1st generation Salsa Cassaroll
golden tan-ish color. I saw on in person at a shop a few years back
and I've wanted a bike that color ever since.

I had to look back at the specs Scott sent me when we were planning
the bike--he wrote:

"I am using the henry james lugs, true temper OX platnium main tubes
and Dedaccia Zero Uno chain and seatstays."

It has a lively ride quality, though it is still plenty stiff enough.
In fact, I think if it wasn't for the ride quality of the Hetres it
might border on too stiff when unloaded. I wanted to be able to bash
it down rough dirt paths, seasonlally maintained dirt roads and busted
up pavement, and maybe do some light credit card touring from time to
time, so it's built with hard use in mind)

[RBW] Re: build differences in hilsens

2011-11-04 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
First of all - CONGRATS on getting a Hilsen!

Mine was an early Toyo frame (2007), and had the ridges on the bottom
bracket shell itself. Have you popped off the guide to see if it's the
same bb shell?

A plethora of Hilsen images from my flickr stream -
http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=93409214@N00&q=hilsen

It seems like there were a few differences in the rear dropout setup, as
well as the way the brazing was done. Single threaded bosses for fender
fore and aft.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/4736723267/

The chainstays seem to have more of an elipse than actual crimping. It
ovalizes near the tire area, then rounds again.

I don't know if it's just the lighting, but does yours have the grey-blue
finish rather than the Rambouillet-matching blue? Expecting to see a lot
more images!

yay Hilsen!

I have a Hope rear hub on one bike. Like others have said, it is loud. I

Piling on, I have a set of WI's and have owned another set in the

Flitz is good. I've also had very good luck on bare metal and chrome with a
product called Nevr-Dull. It won't remove actual pits or deep scratches,
but it's fantastic for oxidation/tarnish and light dirt.

I think I remember someone telling me it was invented by/for the Navy a
long time ago to keep the brass shiny on ships.

[RBW] Re: I really dislike sales tax

2011-11-04 Thread Pete Olson

I hadn’t noticed before reading this thread that Rivendell carries
Devold; I didn’t think that this brand was imported. I have a Devold
wool top and a neck warmer from Norway that are very nice. It is the
centennial of the Amundsen South Pole expedition and here is a
translation of the role of Devold:

1911 - 2011 Amundsen and Devold at the South Pole 100 years ago.

December 14, 2011 is the 100th anniversary of Roald Amundsen and his
expedition reaching the North Pole. This feat made Amundsen one of
history's most famous polar explorers. To survive in the
extreme climate, expedition members were also dependent on proper
clothing. In 1911, Devold had produced warm clothing made of wool for
over 50 years, and was a well-known supplier of durable wool. As
Nansen had done before him, for the crossing of Greenland, Amundsen
also chose wool from Devold for his expedition. We are proud to have
been part of this event.

If the aluminum parts are anodized . there's not much to be done other
than soap and water and a cleaner way like McGuiar's.
If the parts are not anodized there's nothing like metal polish like
Brasso. It's gentle but really polishes up uncoated aluminum nicely .
but it takes some labor to rub and rub.

What about Phil hubs? Lickton's aka lickbike.com always has had the best
prices on Phil hubs :) ... but I've not seen lately.

Unless you build you own wheels, or can have them built cheaply ... or cost
is no concern ... I wouldn't recommend Shimano hubs as they (still) don't
use cartridge bearings. I won't use anything but hubs with those... as
they'll last literally forever :) A wheel is only as good as the
*cheapest*part. I prize my Joe Young built wheels ... and would never think of
skimping on the hub to save a few $$. We gotta put it into perspective
people pay all sorts of money buying stuff that will never last even
remotely as long as a hub or wheel. ... but when it comes down to spending
a few $$ extra for a hub or rim .. they balk. . . . blinded by the sense of
lack and undeservedness. Spend the money to get what you want and
celebrate it brother :)

No. Loud and somewhat non-reliable (pawl slippage in cold weather).

Many of these boutique hubs have significant design compromises especially in
pawl design. They tend to be different for the sake of different and avoiding
patent issues. I've had some of the hubs from some of the makers that have
been talked about, none were better than standard Shimano or Campy hubs in
terms of performance and most had significant shortcomings.

When it comes to hubs you're really not going to get better performance and
reliability than you can from Shimano. If I was going to buy a boutique hub,
it would be Phil. They've been at it longer than anyone else in that market
and have worked the bugs out. Best of the lot in boutique hubs IMHO.

obnoxious... the sound of ratcheting pawls can bring only joy...
Phil Wood freewheel hub on my Riv Bomba... I simply sleep better at

Favorite vintage hub... Older (late 80s/early 90s) Shimano Deore XT
M730s... oh these are nice and they last forever...

But the Whites are so nice, too... as are the Hopes... I don't know if

Nanoraptors are hard to beat. But that's getting pretty big...

Re: [RBW] Off-road tire recommendation?

2011-11-04 Thread Lyle Bogart
Rick, where are you touring? I've had great success with my Atlantis using
marathon xr 700x40 on fire/forestry roads in New England and the pacific
northwest, single-track and 4WD roads covered with nasty fractured bits of
rock on the Navajo rez in Arizona. Even in thick goat heads, never a flat.
This is with moderate loads--30-50 pounds.

Hope this helps,

lyle

[RBW] Re: Fancy Hub Conundrum: Chris King vs. White Industries vs. Hope

2011-11-04 Thread Bill M.
I have a set of Phil cassette hubs. No issues over several thousand
miles, but they are both very heavy and very expensive. The WI's are
about a pound lighter for the pair, cost less and work beautifully.
