[RBW] Re: Shimano CX70 cantilever?

2011-11-02 Thread newenglandbike
No doubt the quality of Paul brakes is top-notch, but, why would Tektros
not last as long as Paul brakes? Is there something about the
material/aluminum used, or the design? Also, in what way are Tektros
more difficult to set up than other cantilever brakes? In my experience,
while different cantis may require different spring tension or a
higher/lower hanger, they're pretty much all the same level of difficulty
to dial in.

Yeah .. there's no evidence that the Tekrto won't last as long as any other
brake. I'm still using a Shimano BR-MC70 wide profile cantilever from the
early 80's. Hardly pretty or fancy, they just continue to work well and
will as long I'm alive:) Setting up any and every canti is an art form
no matter the brand :) If you want super simple use v-brakes!

While the hanger for the Tektro brake is pretty, it is considerably fussier
to work with. Tektros are more difficult to center and fine tune. I first
tried disassembling and trying different holes but ultimately ended up
bending the spring and offsetting the hanger. I don't believe the Tektro
parts are as durable, and when when you need a replacement part... well
forgedaboutit. Still, for the money, they're a good brake, but I wouldn't
pay more than twice that for the Shimano. I would for a Paul brake.

LOL, thanks for the laugh this morning, i still need to do some
sanding on the wood grips before i refinish them, but once i'm ready
i'll come back with a few pictures for input--however i threw away my
last glue-on moustache recently.

Rob, thanks i never thought of cabernet as complimentary but think it
would look nice with the grips. but i have to think about how to do
it, as a general rule i don't like to shellac my cotton tape--i love
the look, i don't like the feel, but i might try it since this would
be a secondary position on the bars.

$150 - Riv Baggins Boxy Bag w/ required Nitto F15 Bar Rack included
Used with some light rub marks on bag, but canvas and leather are in great
shape. This is the older tan waxed canvas and leather Boxy bag,
roughly 10"Lx8"Wx7"D and very nicely made. Completely rainproof in my
experience. Elastic cord and hook closure for main compartment. Two
covered side pockets and a buckled front pocket. Rack clamps to bars
and is usual Nitto quality. Includes CycoActive map case for top.
Bag sits level with bar tops.

$65 - Riv Baggins Hobo Bar bag (tan waxed canvas and thick leather
reinforcements)
Well-used but functionally perfect (see pics, 6/10 cosmetically?).
Great NLA bag that sits against head tube where handling is little
affected. Zippered main compartment about 13"Wx8"Hx4"D. Two big rear
buckle pockets are
great for snacks, camera, other grab-ables. Rear pockets rainproof,
main compartment will seep in heavy rain due to zipper. Works best
with upright bars or drop bars at least 42cm wide. With cantis or
centerpulls, you'll want to run some cord through the side d-rings and
tie off to the brake levers or bar-end shifter cables. This keeps the
bag away from the straddle cable.

$45 - Medium Riv Musa Knickers (Grey w/ blue accents)
Light use. Nice, but just don't fit my tall, skinny legs. These are
early ones without the reflective patches
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ws2.htm

$40 - Medium Pearl Izumi Vagabond Jacket/Vest ("Optic" Yellow)
Like new except for rub marks shown in photos from bouncing around in
my bag. Very nice design with zip off sleeves, nice venting. Fabric
is breathable and water repellent--keeps you dry in light rain but
heavy rain will eventually seep in. Four zip pockets. Generously
long sleeves for a medium. pit-to-pit: 22", length F/R: 22"/25.5",
sleeves: 36" (from center of back)

$20 - Tange CrMo Fork, 1" threaded 700c canti unicrown 43mm rake 130
steerer with 40mm threaded (chrome)
NOS, made with Tange MTB blades, 900g

I've had good luck with BR-R550s with switching out the wide washer on the
inside with the thinner washer from the outside (as per shimano's
instructions) so the pads arent so close to the rim...and then pulling the

action feels right to me and modulates well. If these brake pads are so
close to the rim, the brakes will not work very well.

[RBW] I really dislike sales tax

2011-11-02 Thread William
I used my first purchase 5% discount. I made it a big one, to save a lot
and to get free shipping. But it kind of slipped my mind that sales tax in
CA is more than 5% (a lot more). Does this make me a teapartier? Am I a
libertarian without knowing it?

Whatever. Be happy you non-Californians. I do get to visit Riv HQ without
much trouble, but I have to pay sales tax whenever I buy from them. I
guess I prefer things the way they are, but Sales Tax hurts sometimes.

By law, in states that have sales tax, or at least in Minnesota, residents
are required to claim their untaxed out-of-state mail order purchases (or
for off-the-books local person-to-person transactions for used stuff) and
pay sales/use tax on them. As far as I know, there is little/no enforcement
on this for ordinary citizens who don't have a retail sales tax exemption.

Sales tax generally bothers me not at all and does not deter me from buying
locally. I don't understand the excessive anger about such taxes, in the US we
pay far less tax than in most of the rest of the developed world (and in the
undeveloped world, things usually operate by bribes which will often cost you
more than taxes would).

I but non-locally when I can't get what I want from local sources or unless
there is a *huge* price difference after accounting for shipping charges.
Given my preferences in bike equipment, I am able to get most things at Jim's
shop since he stocks the kind of stuff I like (unlike almost every other bike
shop in town, most of which are devoted to the Trek, Specialized and/or
Cannondale product lines for bikes and accessories). But there are a few odd
things I buy from sources Riv (e.g., clothing items, Phil hand cleaner, and
some other bits and bobs).

I'm with you on that. But in that department, this particular packaging
was way below standard. The box was much larger than necessary. Maybe I
should have photographed it before I broke it down. You know how all of us
have gotten Riv packages and immediately assumed "It *CANT* all be in
there!" This time I was saying "They must have put something extra in

everything was fine, and it was free shipping, but it was positively
un-Riv-ish in "fill fraction". Maybe Robert is on vacation. :)

Well, they do have at least one new person in packing. (remember the
want ad on the site?)

Also don't mind the sales tax, but do realize that every area is
different,. While not an issue in the Twin Cities up in Duluth, MN
there are added taxes that do make me think once or twice before
buying something when I'm up there.

Only thing I don't like about modern sales taxes - can't figure them
easily in my head anymore. My mom worked retail and for years I could
figure out tax and give the sales person exact change before it was
rung up. A fun way to mess with folks back in the day.

[RBW] Re: ISO: SunTour XC Pro right cantilever caliper, silver 25.4 Dirt Drop stem

2011-11-02 Thread Erik
Pete,
Not directly answering your question, but a couple of mechanic's
troubleshooting tips. Are you you 100% positive that it is the caliper
itself? Sometimes the ends of the canti bosses get a little bit of flare,
and a high quality (one with tight tolerances, little play) caliper will
bind. If this is the case, some plumber's tape and patience can solve the
problem. Another common problem is that the sleeve in the caliper is a
little too long for the boss. The boss needs to extend ever so slightly
past the end of the caliper sleeve. This can be remedied by some very
careful filing of the front of the sleeve. If the inner diameter of the
caliper sleeve appears to be the problem, rolling some emory cloth to
approximately the diameter of the boss and rotating the caliper on it will
allow you to judiciously remove some material from the I.D.

Again, sorry if you've checked all of this, and simply have a defective
product.
