[RBW] Big Apples and Sams

2011-10-03 Thread ccanter
Searched the archives and can't find anything conclusive. Anyone put
700 x 50 Big Apples on their first run 700c green, canti-equiped
Hillborne? If so did it work? Any clearance left to speak of? I
think max tire on the first Sams was 44mm and 45 on the later ones.
(??) RBW web site shows pics of the BA;s with a caliper reading
44.55mm.

[RBW] Re: "Wow you go really fast on that thing"

2011-10-03 Thread Peter Pesce
I did a large (3000+ riders) metric century earlier in the summer and got a
number of comments.
The first, as expected, was from a passing roadie to his buddies, "Man,
it's gonna be a long day on THAT thing," referring to my Sam.
Happily, it got better after that. I got passed by probably several hundred
people over the course of the day (I'm slow) and all of the dozen or so
comments I got from other riders were positive, mostly "nice bike" or "cool
bike." One guy who spent 20 minutes or so on my wheel (I'm slow, but I punch
a HUGE hole in the air!) had a lot of time to study my bike and we had a
nice chat when he finally went by. He asked how old it was, and commented on
the old-school centerpulls and lots of shiny silver bits.

[RBW] Re: Twin legged kickstand

2011-10-03 Thread Peter Pesce
I use one on my LHT commutility bike and love it. I cut the legs down so
that one wheel is only 1/2" off the ground (it usually sits nose-down when
empty, but tail-down with anything on the back. It had it almost perfectly
balanced the other day, so it would rock back and forth on its Big Apples
for quite a while with a little push, but I digress...). If you are going to
cut the legs, be sure you adjust them for the fattest tire you plan to run.
Also, as others have said, the front tire will flop if your bike is tail
heavy. I have a big chunky CETMA rack on mine, which exacerbates the
problem, so I installed on of those spring stabilizer things.
Also, the bike is more stable on the 2-leg for loading, but it still will
not stand up to large asymmetries. A full grocery bag on only one side of
the rear rack will tip it over easily, but I can carry my briefcase pannier
on only one side without a problem. I'd guess the briefcase is only about
5lbs, where the grocery bag is probably 15lbs.

[RBW] Re: "Wow you go really fast on that thing"

2011-10-03 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I forget the exact wording, but the Bike Snob NYC book described "roadies" as
not really enjoying cycling, always trying to minimize effort, minimize riding
time, etc. I've also noticed that the stereotypical roadies are the least
imaginative cyclists, who consider a road bike with 105 parts to be a
completely different machine than a road bike with an Ultegra group, or 25 mm
tires to be excessively plush. Your Hillborne is simply outside their limited
realm, even though to most of us here, it is entirely normal. I had a
three-wheeled rickshaw, which was very clearly a pedal-powered pickup truck.
One time I was hauling a chest of drawers across town. Three different roadies
asked "what's that thing for?" On other occasions I was asked how much it
weighs!

[RBW] Non-existant Tire

2011-10-03 Thread jandrews_nyc
Hi,
I think the tire I'm looking for doesn't exist.
I had been using Panaracer Pasela TG 700x37's on my Hillborne for the better
part of 2009 till last spring when I rebuilt the bike without fenders and
with Schwalbe Marathon Dureme 50's!. The tires are really too big for the
Hillborne, but they do fit and there's about 5mm of clearance at the chain
stays. I'm rebuilding the Hillborne post new paint job as a fendered tourer
again and need slightly smaller tires.

So, here's what I'm looking for:
A tire, like the Pasela, with a *gum skin wall*.
Something between 40mm and 50mm...ideally a true 45mm.
Something capable of most roads and trails.

Any suggestions?
 thanks
Jason

If you want to use the holders, the Kool Stop "V Type" inserts should
work though I'm not positive. However, I highly recommend ditching
the holders for the Kool Stop "Mountain" pads in Salmon if you have
clearance for them!

[RBW] Re: Non-existant Tire

2011-10-03 Thread jinxed
WOW...yep! I want the exact same tire for the Hilsen.

Like you, I have been running the Pasela TG 700x37.

I have even talked myself into liking the way all black tires look to open
up the choices. So far the Marathon line up has been most promising, but it
seems they have true measurements of under 40 then jump up to 50. Those are
crazy expensive tires to "maybe" fit on the big end. I would run Big Apples
if I could...but realistically, 42-44 would be sweet.

There is a tire being put out by J&B Importers under their house brand
Origin8 that looks to be a Marathon sorta kinda look alike. Specs say it has
a kevlar protection, folding bead, all black with reflective side stripe.
29x1.75 (44.4). I think they retail @ $24ea. I might try a set of those.

Still...I would rather dig on a set of Supremes in a 42ish.

Re-read the subject line: it's a Bridgestone Atlantis.

The fork crowns were later used for XO1 crowns.

According to Riv article from some time ago, Grant said there were
only about 300 (?) made -- and none were imported.

I bought one at my local Goodwill a few years ago for $12.

Too small.

Sold it,.

Jason:

My Tektro 720s came with black pads that wore out in a couple of
years. I replaced them with Kool Stop salmons. I just bought the
pads & slid them into the Tektro holders, perfect fit. These are the
long ones that extend way back into the fork. 40 mm front tire needs
a bit of a squeeze to get between the pads.

I had gotten some generic V-brake pad inserts on a tour & had to
whittle them with a razor blade to get them into the holders. So make
sure you get the right pads for your holders.

Yes, replacing v-type inserts involves pulling that silver pin. Your new
inserts should come with new pins, also. Keep the extras because they tend
to disappear when you drop them in your workshop. To Doug P's point above,
I concur that there are some minor variations in the exact geometry of the
metal holders. You want a snug slide in fit. I've had some combinations
where the pads were a hair loose in the holders and that actually kind of
rattled in there. I decided not to run that combination.

[RBW] Dirt Roads of Washtenaw County (Michigan) Ride Report and Photos

2011-10-03 Thread Amit Singh
Dear Rivendell Owners Bunch;

Dad and I were supposed to go bicycle camping in Traverse City this weekend,
but when I came down with an upper-respiratory infection we decided it was
best if the trip was cancelled and I was given a chance to rest. I didn't
take that chance, and besides this terrible cough, runny/congested nose and
a slight fever, overall, I felt pretty good! So it was decided to ride
Friday and Sunday. Both were spectacular rides, but Sunday's was perhaps
most memorable.

I was tired up of roads and traffic and wanted to do something different, so
I suggested trying out the Dirt Roads of Washtenaw County. Dad is all about
efficiency, so he wanted to take a more local route - something we could get
to without driving. He's also flexible and up for adventure, so he agreed
to letting me drive us to the WashCo Dirt Road ride. I also invited Tom,
thinking that he'd enjoy the morning air and it would be good for him and
dad to hang out.

We started packing and preparing around 8 am Sunday morning, each wearing 4
or 5 layers of wool, and boy, did we need it. The temperature was around
42* when we left, but warmed to about 47* by the time we arrived.
Thankfully, this was a short commute, maybe 25 minutes away from home, but
because of searching for an enigmatic Kinko's to make copies (which we never
found) of our map, it ended up taking us close to an hour. Thankfully, Tom
is an artist and works quickly, so we had a detailed working map to ride
by. We parked the Land Rover at a local cafe and had our morning intake of
fresh mushroom and spinach quiche. It was delicious, just what we needed to
get our engines going.

We picked a 40-ish mile route, made up almost entirely dirt roads and
started our journey in the town of Dixboro, riding almost immediately into
densely wooded forests mixed with golden farm country and spattered with
crystal-clear lakes. The foliage created beautiful and vibrant scenery and
coupled with the crisp wind, we could feel and see the beginnings of fall.

There's more to see and be a part of, including huge wild llamas,
catch-me-if-you-can deer and foraging for the most delicious apples I've
ever tasted. There's also a Rivendell Atlantis, Saluki and an A. Homer
Hilsen.

Photos here .

I hope you enjoy :)

Amit

unnecessary bar tape purchase. Thanks! Steve

[RBW] Re: Brake Shoes for Tektro 720's

2011-10-03 Thread EricP
I have the Yokozuna pads on two of my bikes and my wife's one bike.
We both like the way they deal with Minnesota weather.

FWIW, the mechanic at my LBS prefers a fairly generic one piece pad/
post brake pad. Have them on my third bike and they work just as well
as the more expensive options. More work when the pads wear down.
But might be worth the effort.

[RBW] WTT: 46cm Noodles for 44cm + 2 sets Tektro brake levers for trade + Brand V bar bag

2011-10-03 Thread ejg
Hey folks,
I have a set of 46cm Noodles that I'd like to trade for 44cm. I received
them used from someone on the list and they are pretty nice, with some
peeling on the "heat treated" red band. There will probably be some shellac
and tape residue when I unwrap em.

Also have 2 sets of Tektro brake levers I want to trade or sell. I think
they are R200 and R100. Anyway, I am looking for Dia Compe Gran Compe aero
levers (off white hoods preferable) and also looking for Suntour Superbe
Aero brake levers. Will consider other vintage aero levers. I prefer the
shape and feel of them.

Brand V boxy bar bag. This is the newer version and is in nice shape. Hasn't
seen much use. I'd like to trade for a "loafer" style front bag or Sackville
or another type of rando bag, but I am open to ideas

Thanks
EJG (Jason)

The silver pin retains the shoe into the holder. Just pull it

[RBW] jaxed and craigslist

2011-10-03 Thread Seth Vidal
Hi folks,
I don''t know if I was the only one here who used bike.jaxed.com to
look for rivs (and other bikes) available on craigslist. But I used it
quite a bit and when the craigslist links were removed due to a C&D
from craigslist I was a bit sad.

So I wrote a craigslist crawler for my own personal use that takes a
simple config file and searches for whatever I want over whatever set
of cities from craigslist then parses out the results (and pictures)
and makes a nice page of the 100 most recent ads from craigslist.

It's not entirely trivial to use - you need the programming language
python and at least one non-default module (BeautifulSoup)

If you're comfortable with python and with command line programs in
general and would like to take a look at it email me off-list.

2011-10-03 Thread cyclotourist
Yeah, that crimped my online buying style... I was able to get some pretty
cool bikes via Jaxed... :-(

[RBW] Re: "Wow you go really fast on that thing"

2011-10-03 Thread dpco
I get teased from some of my fellow club members. Out of town, especially in
the Bay Area or Sonoma Co., I always get compliments. Many folks think it is
an old bike, but many will ask questions and when I tell them about
Rivendell, they are very complimentary. My 59cm Roadeo is the best bike I
have ever purchased, period. At 59, I have come to realize that there's no
time clock and I want a bike that is 1) great handling on downhills 2)
springy steel ride3) beautiful to the eye, and, 4) tougher than nails. The
Roadeo is all that and more. I have a lot of bikes and I always ride my
Roadeo on the hard and long rides. Mr. Petersen knows bikes.

[RBW] Re: Non-existant Tire

2011-10-03 Thread Jay
I've used those Contis in 559-47. Didn't much care for it. Too many
flats and didn't roll well.

I liked the 32-559 Sport Contact though.

YMMV
