[RBW] a light bracket

2011-09-25 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
For your inspection: a light bracket. Please note the total and utter lack
of design. Applaud it as minimalist (not true), tolerate it as amateur-ish
(true), or despise it as laziness (oh, so very, very true).

I cut a 5"-ish section off a long 1/4" x 1" aluminum bar and drilled two
holes, one for an M5 bolt, one for an M6 bolt.

It helps to start with an actual light bracket, in this case a Gino's mount.
All I did (and all I actually wanted to do) was displace the light so that I
could get a better beam (less wheel/rack shadow) and could still leave it in
place for any of my configurations: tubus-Tara-with-panniers or
Nitto-Mini-with-or-without-PlatRack.

[RBW] interesting history of the Bleriot airplane

2011-09-25 Thread eflayer
i just got done with a two week cycling tour in upstate Michigan. lovely.
while there, i learned of the female pilot Harriet Quimby. she was
supposedly born in MI and apparently quite the daring woman of her day;
early in the 1900's. first woman to fly the Channel, but got no recognition
due to the near simultaneous sinking of the Titanic. she flew in Bleriots
and it sounds as if they were not tried and true as we now see in the
bicycle named after the inventor of that plane.

her story is summarized here and how she died doing what she loved is a
sorta weird and quirky odyssey.

Re: [RBW] New AHH First RIde

2011-09-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I often get congratulations on my custom Rivs and asked, "How *old* is
that bike?!" The inquirers are often nonplussed when I tell them,
"2003" or "1999" as the case may be.

Rode the Kojack equipped Riv #3 yesterday on a purposely extended
grocery ride; came back up Meadowlark (up the side of the mesa to Rio
Rancho; 1 mile that starts gradually and then gets much steeper),
standing for much of the way in the 72" gear, and bailed to walk the
final 1/8 steepest section with the 25 lb total (including bags) load
(2 bot cheap Chianti! -- for tonites' home made pasta sauce. The
Kojacks make a grocery load much less fraught with anxiety about
expansion cracks and rough pavement.

[RBW] SoCal October Ride - San Clemente 10/15/11

2011-09-25 Thread cyclotourist
If you're in the neighborhood, a ride in San Clemente is taking shape.
Planning for the 15th, with the 22nd as a possibility if enough schedules
need it. Discussion on flickr (we really should start a google group...)
here:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/socal_rivendell_bicycle_appreciation_society/discuss/72157627749072438/

Great route that can add in some premier singletrack if requested. Lots of
food options in town, which is really what these rides are all about.

Re: [RBW] interesting history of the Bleriot airplane

2011-09-25 Thread MSmith
Good read. I love that old time aviation stuff. Those were truly men and
women of steel. I kind of got a chill at the end of her tale when I looked
over my shoulder out the window and can practically see where her final
crash took place...

If you ever find yourself in central New York you must check out the Glenn
Curtiss Museum. Curtiss began as a bicycle builder, then switched to
motorcycle (he was the holder of the land speed record at one point) then
his talents were tapped to design engines for the earliest airplanes. His
company went on to create the "Jenny," the quintessential barnstormer of the
Twenties. The museum is one of the coolest I've ever been to. Lots of old
bikes, motos, and planes.

[RBW] New York Times Article ("Sport Grows, and Grows More Perilous")

2011-09-25 Thread Jim Cloud
I thought you might find this article (http://www.nytimes.com/
2011/09/25/sports/in-cycling-the-fast-lane-brings-increasing-
danger.html?emc=tnt&tntemail1=y), from today's NYT an interesting
read.

I thought this segment of the article was especially topical in the
discussions that occur regarding the qualities of carbon fiber vs. the
traditional steel frames that are still much in use:
"After crashing with steel-frame bikes 20 years ago, uninjured riders
could often straighten their handlebars and ride off. But bike frames
today are made of extremely light carbon-fiber composites that
frequently shatter in even minor spills."

Obviously, the CF bikes used in today's international racing are
probably lighter (and less durable) than many consumer models. I
suspect, however, that the manufacturers of CF bikes aren't especially
attuned to the durability of their products for long term use. Of
course, many well-heeled riders don't plan to keep their bikes for
more than a couple of seasons of riding!

I happen to have a well worn chainring around. I may give that a shot. It looks

To celebrate Rivendell's new website here are some pictures of past

Key things that make this shop great: the sheer randomness of the
things there, the pure honest of the shop with no thrills or frills
straight to the point but with a sense of class and despite the fact
that you've been there a ton of times you can still get lost just like
the real Rivendell.

Pictures prove how awesome the shop is:

[RBW] FS: Orange Sam Hillborne and Goodies

2011-09-25 Thread Mike Irwin
Hi everyone,

After a number of months planning, acquiring, planning some more,
waiting, I was nearing a start to my Hillborne build. But alas, due to
a recent need to replace some photography equipment (ok, all of my
missing photography equipment), I've decided to be happy with my
current bicycle and pass along this set to someone else who wants to
build up a very nice Hillborne. I'd prefer to sell as a package deal
than to part out. There are some items you'll need to pick up (ie,
Grip tape, brake/shifting cables, etc), but I'd say you'd be 95%
there. I hadn't even unpacked most of this stuff.

Full package, shipped is $1100. I can certainly do PayPal. If you have
some nice digital photography equipment that you'd offer in trade, I
would be willing to do that too. Essentially, I'm trying to replace a
Canon T3i camera kit, with the 18-55mm lens and a Canon Normal EF 50mm
f/1.4 USM Autofocus lens.

[RBW] Re: New York Times Article ("Sport Grows, and Grows More Perilous")

2011-09-25 Thread Leslie
I found that interesting. An article I caught Friday afternoon was on CF
itself:
http://gizmodo.com/5843276/why-is-carbon-fiber-so-expensive?tag=giz-explains

However, I have to stop and think about that article you posted. It
mentioned that a weight of 14.9 lb is set; if one were to try to go a size
under on a Roadeo frame, used a lighter wheel with fewer spokes, seatpost,
bars, etc., (not that I'm advocating such, but, if one were to do such...),
you could still have a competitive bike that's much more durable, without
having to have to resort to using added weight to get an underweight bike up
to the minimum...

(Yet who was it that came out with a new frame back during the TdF, that is
even more light than previous bike frames? Cervelo? Cannondale? Trek? I
can't remember, I found it novel that the frame was supposedly less than
2lb, but not overly interesting to my interests...)

Anywho...

[RBW] Fwd: 2011 Knoxville Fall Classic Double Century - a set on Flickr

2011-09-25 Thread Eric Norris
Took my Riv Road out yesterday for a little ride:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/35176895@N03/sets/72157627749552464/with/6181869392/

This was the first major ride on the Riv with friction downtube levers, and
they worked great. I've been working on hand positions on my bikes, and I've
found that the "flat" platform provided by Ergo levers didn't work well on this
bike, so I switched over to a pair of Dia Compe brake-only levers that pretty
closely replicate Campy Super Record levers (a setup that worked great on PBP
on another bike).

"It's the future". I like it.

Kind of like how in original Star Trek, when they ate a meal, the food was
synthetic brightly colored "nutritious" cubes...

...but in Star Trek The Next Generation, which took place 80 years after the
original series, whenever they ate a meal it was real stuff like pea soup and
roast turkey.

[RBW] 100 mile S30O & visit to Rivendell

2011-09-25 Thread dougP
I'm a bit slow in posting this as it was last weekend, but our only
photog just sent the link today:

phhttp://gallery.me.com/jjacobs702#100096

The Atlantis & I, along with 3 of my intrepid touring buds, did Chico
Velo's Tour of the Unknown Coast 9/17-18. Starting in Ferndale about
9-ish Sat AM, the route goes south thru the Ave of the Giants, hangs a
right up & over Panther Gap (elev 2,700') on Mattole Rd, & down to the
crossroads of Honeydew. We camped a few miles west & were well fed by
the Chico Velo chefs. These people know how to feed riders. Saturday
was around 65 miles, and we were told 5,000' of climbing.

Breakfast Sunday was at the Mattole Grange, an all you can eat affair
that happens monthly. From there, on to Petrolia, along the coast to
the aptly named Wall. I was told by one of the club riders that the
piece you see on approach is 22% & I won't argue. A nicely placed
food stop at the top (took quite a while to get there) is followed by
an equally steep downhill, only to climb back up again, albeit at
somewhat less a gradient, on the Endless Climb. From camp back to
Ferndale was 35 miles, with another 5,000' of climbing, but took us
(OK, we're slow) until 3-ish. Hence the "S30O".

Roads are generally paved but not well maintained (you hop from
pothole to pothole). Glad I was on 40 mm Marathons. One of my buds
was on 28s & had a pinch flat each day. This ride is serious
Rivendell territory.

One our guys was flying out of San Francisco so on the way south we
decided to drop him off at the BART station near Rivendell. He bought
a Brand V boxy h'bar bag (he has the bar tube but wants more
capacity). I lusted after a Hunqapillar. We spoke with Jay who'd
done the Unknown Coast (aka "Lost Coast") loop only in reverse (looked
much harder to me) & in one day. Jay offered test rides but we'd
never have gotten home had we indulged. Gotta take him up on that in
the future, though.

I highly recommend this ride. Chico Velo hauls your gear & feeds you
well. Interestingly enough, most of them seemed to be on narrow tired
carbon fiber, so whatever works. No wristbands, bike numbers, etc.
They check you in on a hand writeen list & give you a sheet with the
map on one side & cues and other info on the other. Actually quite
efficient & refreshing. We intend to get a group together next year &
build another trip around this event.

[RBW] WTB Sackville TrunkSack small

Looking for a Sackville TrunkSack small in good or better condition,
not particular about color.

I have a choice of Ostrich boxy front bags to trade: one original
version that was mounted on a couple of bikes for testing and removed;
one newer version never mounted.

Thanks,

[RBW] RBW Owners Bunch Bay Area Mt Diablo Ride / Camp Sept 24-25th

2011-09-25 Thread Stephen S
Starting a thread for pics and talk about the recent bike ride up Mt Diablo
with camping trip. Rene has already posted one shot last night but wanted a
central thread for pics.

I'll start with some pics that I posted to flickr earlier :
http://www.flickr.com/photos/noryia/sets/72157627627950185/

I had a great time. Rene, Anne, and I met up with Tony, Nathon, and Dustin.
Dustin had to finish work but the rest of us took off at a leisurely pace.
Even though Rene had some bike issues with his front derailer and his tires
and was farther behind we tried to wait up for him at certain spots. Through
this we met up with Horace and Erin who were joining us but hadn't actually
responded to any of the threads so, Bonus!

We did make it up before dark and got some fairly spacious camping spots.

Some raccoons tried to run off with some of our food as we realized that
they were smart enough to get into the cabinets that were keeping our food
safe. Dustin came to the rescue by appearing out of nowhere with some
concrete which kept the doors closed.

Dustin left early in the morning, after eating some breakfast, to head off
to work. Luckily there were some showers at the Juniper camp that we stayed
at. We headed down after some group photos. One flat and some time later and
we were at the bottom and on our way back to Riv headquarters.

Thanks everyone for coming out. Thanks Rene and Tony for setting stuff up
and getting the sites. I believe the talk was to try and do these more often
so count me in!

Stephen

[RBW] Re: New AHH First RIde

2011-09-25 Thread Mike
I love the "it's the future" response. I gotta remember that.

I've had my Hilsen for 3 yrs now and it's just a great bike. I've
s24O'd, toured, randonneured, noodled and gravel grinded on it without
problems. It's a wonderful machine. It's amazing how changing the
tires changes the bike. With JB Greens it feels pretty darn zippy and
with 700x40 Marathons you can wind your way down dirt roads with
confidence.

[RBW] Noticed something about the Rivendell bike models

2011-09-25 Thread James Warren

And that is that they have evolved in great ways, and the first four
$2000-level bikes currently shown on the models page are:

Roadeo
AHH
Bombadil
Atlantis

And the evolution has been such that these are each the evolved version of the
analogous mid-late-90's Rivendell bikes that were named as follows:

The Road Standard
The Longlow
The Mountain
The Allrounder

2011-09-25 Thread Tony
It WAS a great time. A varied bunch with excellent taste in bicycles
and a common dislike of racoons. Dinner time squeezed around one
picnic table relaxing and sharing chocolate (thanks Erin and Dustin),
talk turned to camp stoves, root beer and cilantro. A few photos I
took include my first bobcat sighting:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/51959000@N08/sets/72157627753024026/

There was talk of getting together again, perhaps on the other side of
the bay, and I can't wait.

Re: [RBW] RBW Owners Bunch Bay Area Mt Diablo Ride / Camp Sept 24-25th

2011-09-25 Thread Anne Paulson
On Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 5:03 PM, Eric Norris wrote:
> Looks fun, except for the sleeping on the ground part.

In my old age, I've resorted to the Big Agnes insulated inflatable air
mattress. Every time I take the five minutes it takes to blow it up, I
swear I'll go back to a Thermarest, and every time I lie down on it, I
remember why I don't sleep on a Thermarest any more.

As Stephen wrote, we went up Diablo at a leisurely pace, which, it
turned out, was great. After a while I found myself alone; I think
Rene was having some problems with his chain hitting his tire, and I
had ridden a bit ahead. And, because it was getting late in the
afternoon, that meant *alone*. The day cyclists we'd seen at the lower
elevations had mostly gone home, as had the motorists, mostly. A
playful bobkitten appeared on the road, completely unafraid of me,
only to be scared away by a rare car. (But it was back when Tony
passed, and that time no motorist appeared so he got a picture which
he will post, right Tony?)
On weekends at midday, with all the bike traffic, Mt Diablo can seem a
bit frantic (though still great), but later in the afternoon one can
appreciate the solitude in the park.

I got to the campground a little after Tony, and we managed to find a
big campsite with a little campsite connected to it, so we had lots of
area to camp, two picnic tables and two food lockers. Juniper
Campground is set on the side of the mountain, with an overlook that
you've seen in the pictures. When we first arrived, I could see the
fog creeping over the coast range far away. By the time the sun set,
we were in an island of land above a marshmallow puff of fog as far as
we could see.

While we were finishing up dinner, Stephen or someone remarked on the
"smoke" blowing around the campsite. No, that was the fog moving in on
us. When I had made my packing list earlier in the week during a heat
wave, I felt silly including a wool undershirt, wool sweater, as well
as a stripy wool hat I made from sock yarn remnants, but when the fog
started rolling in, I was glad to put them all on.

We'd brought an interesting variety of food, much of it shared,
including rather a lot of freeze-dried backpacker food and some
superior salami Dustin showed up with. Erin demonstrated her excellent
taste by bringing *and sharing* some dark chocolate with sea salt.
Super.

I camped under a large pine. We had no rain, but my pine strained
enough fog out of the air that I might as well have been camping in my
own little drizzle. Happily, my tent is waterproof, and though wet on
the outside remained cozy and dry on the inside. The rest of us, I
think, stayed dry, and Nathan didn't even have to put his fly on his
tent.

Raccoon depredation during the night didn't dampen our spirits the
next morning. We rode down the hill, then parted, talking of a future
trip.

Thanks Horace, Great Shots!

Anne, great right up. Thanks for including my nonsense about the fog. I
guess you can't always take the desert out of a person. I believe Tony
posted the pic shortly before you posted.

2011-09-25 Thread EastBayGuy
It was a pleasure to meet everyone last night. It's a bummer I did not get to
ride up or down with everyone. That's what I get for doing and S240 in the
middle of my work week.

Looking forward to November.

2011-09-25 Thread Michael_S
That area is such a beautiful place to ride and so far away. I want to do
the Norther Cali coast tour again when I'm free of the work ball & chain.
Glad you had a good time.

2011-09-25 Thread ercarlso
It was great to meet and camp with all of you. The route, the
mountain, the weather and the company were all perfect ... well, the
raccoons were naughty. Anyway, it's only my second camp trip on my
Betty Foy, and it just handles great with all my gear strapped on the
back. That really adds to the pleasure of the experience. I hope to
do another trip like this soon.

I have a few more pictures to add to our pile: http://goo.gl/0C4qU
