Re: [RBW] Re: Berthold Fender Installation- It went so smooth.. till it didn't.. sheesh
One point: Do not do anything involving bicycles and fasteners over grass. Usually if (WHEN!) you drop one it will become buried under all the grass and not findable. Then you're faced with replacing a usually unique bolt or washer (such as something on a Campy or Shimano part) that may or may not have a thread known to man or a known thread with a uniquely small bolt head. Either way getting a workable replacement can become a major Internet search (ordering a Campy bolt) or fabrication process (improvising a Shimano part) that is at least as challenging as riding that century you were planning for two days hence. Chasing running bolts and washers across basement and garage floors is greatly preferable to replacing parts lost in the grass. Beyond that, Steve is right about keeping your yoga and meditation up to date and making bike work a meditative exercise. Shaking fronds of the correct mix of field grasses in the appropriate directions while mutterring incantations should help a lot, too. Make sure the spirits will help you. Can't help with containers, but if you are traveling internationally I highly recommend using non-US carriers. [RBW] FS - Books, Avocet 50
The Dancing Chain, 2nd edition. Perfect condition. I'll throw in a nice hard-cover Eddy Merckx book too. Both classics! $35 shipped here in the USA. Also a nice nearly new Avocet 50 Altimeter with the original and amazing packaging. I have it listed on e-bay right now, but will end the auction early if anyone jumps in. I'm asking minimum of $100. That sounds like a lot, but this is quite rare, and the packaging alone is incredible. (That and I'm getting close to having enough for a Simpleone.) Alex Wetmore had (has?) a site on his touring tweaks, featuring DIY mudflaps. His reasoning is that a flap blocks more water from soaking your feet, BB, crank, and chain, the lower it's bottom extends. So, as low as you can, as long as any contact with the ground is tolerable. [RBW] Motobecane Build - a set on Flickr
Patrick from ABQ sold me this frame, and I just completed the build today. I saw this bike in another incarnation when Patrick and I went for a ride on the Bosque Trail in Albuquerque earlier this year, so I knew I had to have it when he offered it for sale. I built it up using a wheelset based on Sturmey Archer's 3-speed fixed gear hub, the goal being a very functional bike that I can take on extended rides that include steep climbs (my annual post-Thanksgiving ride comes immediately to mind). The paint is original, and its patina of use lends a great aura to the bike. I had originally considered getting it powder coated, but now I'm thinking of leaving it as is. It's certainly very Grant-ish in its current condition. Fenders are from Planet Bike--I think the fender line came out pretty nice. http://www.flickr.com/photos/35176895@N03/sets/72157627576981351/with/6160493179/ Recycling notes: The handlebar tape is vintage Bike Ribbon, bought for $1 at the local thrift store months ago. Fenders were bought from a friend for about $30. Handlebar and stem are from another bike, as is the saddle. The only new items needed to get this project on the road were the wheels, a new bottom bracket (I didn't have a Swiss-threader bottom bracket in the parts bin), and new brake cables and housing. --Eric campyonly...@me.com www.campyonly.com www.wheelsnorth.org -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] A sob story and a WTB plea
Hello friends, I just completed a wonderful, if not quite pleasant, ride on my racing Rivendell Rambouillet. 420 miles from Salt Lake City to St George, UT in 28 hours and 1 minute ( http://salttosaint.com/ ). We didn't get many pictures, but here I am ( https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/KARNLpmQ24hBc7khJ3Jy7Q?feat=directlink ) at the start about to attach a rain jacket, which would get MUCH use, on to the small Sackville TrunkSack. It can be seen hiding behind my helmet there. The trunk matches perfectly with the green Rambouillet, Brooks saddle, bar tape... or I should say, "matched". After all of the aforementioned items carried me, in fine fashion, all the way to southern Utah, someone decided to steal my TrunkSack right off of my bike. Rivendell doesn't have the green sack any more, so I am hoping one of you fine folks might have one in your basement that is not being used and would be willing to part with it. I don't want it if it's being put to good service. If you can help please contact me. Thank you. Re: [RBW] Motobecane Build - a set on Flickr
I chose to set it up with my "regular" gear as the top gear. That choice was dictated in part by the hub, which has the top gear as direct drive. In my experience with internal hubs, direct drive is the most efficient--whenever you engage the gears, it feels more sluggish (regardless of what the experts say). So I now have a top gear of 70 inches and two lower fears of 53 and 44, which should get me up just about any hill I'm likely to come across. --Eric N Sent from the iPad 2 On Sep 18, 2011, at 6:48 PM, PATRICK MOORE wrote: > I'm also curious how you gear it: top cruising and lower ones for > climbing, or middle cruising and top for downhills? > > On Sun, Sep 18, 2011 at 7:05 PM, Eric Norris wrote: >> Patrick from ABQ sold me this frame, and I just completed the build today.
