Re: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojaks
Beautiful bike, Patrick. Metal fenders have a rolled lip, which is about 4 mm thick, so the side clearance will typically be 8 mm less than the top. Typically, for metal fenders you want something that is specked at least 18 mm larger than the biggest tire you will use. Plastic fenders, for all the other problems they have excell at clearance, since they have no extra material at the lip. I also use the Grand Sport brakes on my Trek 620, and my wife use the Superb Pro on her early Sequoia, both because these have good stopping power and the single pivot design gives better brake clearance than the dual pivot design. In the past I did the barrel set up as someone else suggested, but now I have gone exclusively to levers with a built in release, either Cane Creek or early Chorus. The new Cane Creek design, which I have on my Rambouillet, are a great lever, and under $40. But it looks like you are running Shimano brifters. Hard to tell from the size photo. keep the rubber side down. michael -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] GB Lierre report on the Bleriot
Just wanted to give an initial review of these tires. I've had them on my Bleriot for about a week now. I ride about 90% gravel and 10% road. I could not be happier with how these tires perform. They roll smooth and quick just like the other GB tires. I was a little concerned with the tread appearing to be a little bulky in the photos, but this is a supple tire. They run very nicely on pavement. I have found this tire to be much more stable on gravel for me than the Cypres and Pari-Moto. I am guessing this is because of more negative cavity in these tires as compared to the other tires which are basically slicks. The aforementioned tires tended to give me much more of a sliding/roller ball effect on the loose stuff. The other tire I had enjoyed on gravel for their stability was the Fatty Rumpkins but you lose a lot in suppleness and smooth rolling on pavement. Anyway, high recommendations for this tire even for those who can fit a Hetre. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojaks
Phil: both of those bikes are Rivendellian in general outlook if not in execution. With that Kona fork you could get any fender you like in there, even an old VW fender. I do want fenders on the Kojak Riv, as it is meant to be an all weather errand bike (but a very *nice* aweb), so I'll first put some miles on the K's to see if they are keepers -- all indications so far say "yes" -- and then, if they are, get either some wider metals or else just use plastic. I do like the Berthoud-type struts, so plastics will have to be modified. Wood: nah, too precious and twee, IMO. On the other hand, Nobilette builds the Riv customs, and he has a demontable system too, said to be very similar to the Rene Herse (which, by the way, he also builds). Or, for something completely different, consider a Moulton with a separable frame. http://www.moultonbicycles.co.uk/models/TSR30.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Foss tubes?
Anyone have any experience using these: http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/foss-tubes-700c/10-014 I'm very intrigued and probably wouldn't hesitate to put these on my rando bike if they work well. The one down side is that they seem to have exceptionally long vavle stems but I'm sure I could get over that. [RBW] Vittoria 1976 Men's Cycling Shoe
Any opinions on these shoes? I have no desire to give up clipless pedals, but I am also finding cycling shoes more and more obnoxious. They are either a $350 carbon disaster or a massive "touring" shoe that seems more suited for hiking. I love the look of these Vittoria shoes and the SPD compatibility. Re: [RBW] Vittoria 1976 Men's Cycling Shoe
Those look very nice and if I were in the market for another SPD pair for road use I'd consider them. As it is, I have put a few hundred miles on the half-that-price Exustar touring shoe (I got mine from VO that no longer carries them, but here you go: http://www.wabicycles.com/exustar_spd_shoes.html) and those are nice shoes: perhaps (to judge as far as one can just from the Vittoria's photos) a bit more rugged but still leather, SPD compatible and modest in their aesthetics. I wish I'd bought 45s instead of 44s, but the leather has stretched a bit and doubtless will continue to as long as the top of my left big toe continues mildly to complain. And of course there are Dromarti and Quoc Pham. I agree with the observation, "carbon disasters." I was interested to note that the Exustar Touring Shoe above does not weigh all that much more than some of Exustar's SR 243 cycling shoe at $230, carbon fiber soles and 578 grams versus the tourer's 655 grams and $100 cost. (But doubtless the 243 is more laterally stiff and vertically compliant and, truth be told, it doesn't look all *that* bad.) Now these interest me, for the Keo Maxes on my Riv fixie gofast: http://www.wabicycles.com/exustar_track_shoes.html Speaking of the Wabi website en haute: is that our very own Harth Huffman of Wabi Woolens, or is someone sharing the name? Re: [RBW] Re: Vittoria 1976 Men's Cycling Shoe
I would say they run normal. I've found that as I age my feet have slightly grown and I now am on the cusp between 44 and 45 for most shoes, while I used to be a size smaller. If you are happy with Shimano 45s, I'd be inclined to think that 45 Exustars would work, too. My 44s feel much the same as my 44 Shimanos. Re: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojaks
Thanks, Michael; I'll wait until I fully test the Kojaks (and also find out from Jan Heine if the new Compass 559 X 42s are (1) better than Paselas and (2) will fit my frames. Speaking of the Ks: I just did some errand riding (to Mom's to pick up bags; to PO to get her mail), a total of 16.8 miles, and my first impressions are very favorable. They don't *feel* any slower despite the belt and they didn't feel hard to pedal despite the 4% higher effective gear (the Kojacks measure 25" in diameter compared to the 24" of the Turbos). And they are comfortable, this at about 50-55 F/R. But the biggest benefit is not comfort (for the Turbos as I've repeated ad nauseam are surprisingly comfortable if you are judicious with pressure: for me, no more than 90-95) or puncture resistance (for my Turbos and Contis have been surprisingly flat moderate) but (1) the freedom to carry 25 lb in the back and bash over our omni-present expansion cracks without fearing to break a spoke (I never get pinch flats) and (2) that I can ride through occasional patches of gravel without worry of a pinch flat (that is where I got my first pinch flat in, I dunno, at least 15 years). I don't expect I'll change to Kojaks on the 559/571 '99 Joe Gofast on which I don't carry loads or ride on anything except daylight, dry weather pavement. [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojaks
Have been tempted to give the Kojaks another try. Have a pair in the garage. Tried once before and within a couple of miles had a flat (although that chunk o' glass probably would have flatted a Marathon). Thing is, I really do understand that although they'd save significant weight from the Marathon Supremes currently on this particular bike, it wouldn't make a bit of difference in actual riding comfort or speed. So no switch so far. And it's getting far enough along in the year that the next tire change will be for studs. [RBW] Nitto Big Front + Fenders
Hi all, Just a quick question for ideas, i'm in the process of swapping out my Nitto Mini front for a Nitto Big Front. One of the things i really liked about the Mini was the boss on the underside to pin the front fender to for that extra tire clearance. On my Big Front there isn't a boss, has anyone come up with a homebrew solution? I've got decent clearance on the fender now, but i'd like to pin it in place as it rattles a little bit at the moment. And the fender is a VO metal fender mounted at the fork with a daruma, the fender stays are mounted at the bottom of the Big Front rack. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Foss tubes?
I did some quick googling and saw some complaints about the tubes blowing at high pressures and some other issues. I think while the idea sounds good, I will wait until it is more mature before spending that much on tubes or putting them on a winter bike. Re: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojaks
Eric: should you decide to give up on yours and sell, I will be interested if they are the 1.35s, of course. The benefit over the Marathons (from what I've read, since I've not used the Marathons) is that they ought to be more supple and thus to roll better. In my 20 miles on them so far, I've not felt anything to contradict that. And the kevlar beads weigh only 295, per the website (100 gr less than the wires) -- very light for the width. Re: [RBW] Re: It doesn't look bad without fenders, no?
I'll be honest, a fully loaded bike without fenders looks a little odd to me, but I'm not a big fan of fenders that prevent things that happen on rides I don't take (I already have a vehicle with fenders for cold, rainy days. It's called a Chevy HHR SS). Fenders mostly do things like screw up the "leaning the rear tire against the pole" thing, and making the bike too big to load in the back of said SS because the front fender takes up too much space even with the wheel off. But I like racks and bags, so I'm going to keep staring at your bike until I "adapt", then I'm going to get over the fact that my racked-and-bagged fenderless XO-3 "looks funny". [RBW] New Bike? Sure feels like one!
Hillborne spoke. With nary a drop of uncertainty in his voice Hillborne thundered, "Change the flippin' chain you FOOL." So I did and all was well, right? Nay! Hillborne thrashed and sputtered and ground to a halt, gleefully reveling in my dumbfounded pout. "You will WALK to the LBS and buy a new cassette. I will not budge an inch further." And so I did. All was well, right? "Humbug! Did I not mention the middle chain ring?", Hillborne mocked while my legs whirled pathetically, anticipation melting from my face. And I did that too. Now all was well, right…maybe? I hesitated then gave a slight push on the pedal. Hillborne responded with a slight motion forward. Another push on the pedal, another motion forward then another and another rapidly gaining speed as Hillborne, now soothed and quietly humming along, responding to each shift effortlessly, looked up and said, "Dude, get a life."
