[RBW] Re: Waxing the chain?

2010-05-17 Thread Angus
I would think that wax should be relatively water proof (waxed cotton
etc...)

I have used a couple of waxed chains in the past and they stayed
cleaner than most. I don't live in a hugely rainy place.

[RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac

2010-05-17 Thread Blindrobert
By "rides big" I just mean that it is sized more traditionally with
just a little seatpost showing and handlebars close to level with the
saddle. On a modern racing frame, I would ride a 60cm bike and in
fact the bikes I use at the velodrome are that size; this bike has a
63cm seat tube. For lights, I usually just put my petzl headlamp
around the bag and turn it on. I have lots of bikes, and I ride them
all, so moveable lights are more useful to me than fixed lights.
Though, for touring, I use a dynamo front hub and wired light.

I mostly use this bike for commuting and city riding - I do sometimes
ride up on the curves and it is comfortable for short distances. I
always wear padded gloves, so I don't need much cushioning beyond
that. The shellaced cloth tape is very grippy, even when it's wet.
The cork grips are comfortable, I suspect they would be even more
comfortable if I shortened my stem and sat a little more upright. I
tend to ride a bit aggressively in traffic and that usually means
leaning forward and pushing a pretty good clip.

[RBW] Bombadill fork crown braze ons?

2010-05-17 Thread Frederick, Steve
I see some (not all) Bomba's have braze ons on the top of their fork crown like
last gen Kogswell P/R's. Is Riv offering a rack that mounts there I wonder?
Was this a running change or can you specify when ordering?

You can see them on this Bomba that's on ebay (outing-not affiliated, etc) and
on some of the 'dills in the Riv pics. (but not all!)

well, yes and no. no?

on a nice day, there's not much reason to carry baggage on a 200-300k
brevet. distance between controls in my region are typically 40 miles
on average, and most riders choose to "refuel" at the controls rather
than carry their own food. it's really not much different than a
"supported" ride.

accordingly, most folks are on road bikes with bike jerseys and a
small seatpouch to carry what they need.

i start to notice more "rando" bikes (i.e., road bikes w/ bags, maybe
fenders) on distances of 400k+. or, of course, if it's raining or
there is some other weather to contend with. but even on a 600k, one
might have the advantage of using a drop bag, so you don't have to
carry *that* much. a big handlebar bag or medium saddlebag should
cover it. that said, I couldn't believe how little some folks were
carrying on the PA 1200k (which I DNF'd) - no bags at all. and it was
cold and wet. and they finished.

anyway, there's also the "event" attitude that Esteban seems to be
referring to - the "triple crown" series sounds like it brings out a
different type of rider than a "brevet" series.

[RBW] fixing leather saddles

2010-05-17 Thread Grant Petersen
Saddle stuffing works great, preemptively or resurrectingly. I've healed
eight or nine saddles this way, and ... it's in the current RR, or the one
before. On a horse, you have the horse & blanket under the leather, so no
sag/stretch possible. On a bike saddle, nothing but air. Fill the air with
stuff-ing. Foam. We have some, but we're not a source, can't be mailing
chunks of foam for free all day long...but when you understand the concept,
you'll find a local solution.
It is..totally a good way to go. It will quadruple the life, I bet. For
Selle An-Atomicas, it's the only way to go.

The fork crown threading was on the first prototypes which I saw.

http://cyclofiend.com/cc/2008/cc452-bombadilproto0208.html

I don't know of an RBW-offered factory rack which currently uses that
connection. Like few of the braze-ons on the Bomba, I think they are
stressing the possible. That attachment point definitely shows up on
various other rack designs.

The only one that I've noticed that _doesn't_ have the threaded fork crown
is the blue one, which seems to look as if it has been plugged (look at the
sweeping chevrons - there's a dot there that would suggest it).

Re: [RBW] Re: Waxing the chain?

2010-05-17 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've found that if you "stew" the chain in the melted wax for half an hour
the chain won't squeak as quickly as it does if you keep it in for just a
few minutes. Half an hour is not a period scientifically determined, but it
does work better than five minutes.

"Stewing" -- this also keeps the chain from stretching; must affect the
molecules in a good way.

So stew it before you give up on it.

And, finally, an old crockpot with your neighbors' old ornamental candle
ends works very well. I put a small grate on the bottom to keep the chain
off of the dirt that sinks to the bottom of the pot, and simply toss the
chain onto the cold wax and turn it on "high" and walk away, coming back in
half an hour or more. Haven't burned anything down yet.

[RBW] Venturing Crew 999 S240

2010-05-17 Thread manueljohnacosta
Venturing Crew 999 went on an overnight/biking trip to Grant Ranch.
Some arrived by car, others by bike. Those crazy enough to biked with
me to Grant Ranch climbed over 1000 feet of elevation over San Jose.
They were constantly lied too about how much further it was till we
descended, not because I wanted to give them false hope, but because I
totally forgot how long the road was. Mr.Smith and Mrs. Salcedo drove
the rest of the venturers to set up camp ahead of us. At camp we had
burgers, hot dogs, pork meat balls and the classic camping food of all
time, Balut! For those not familiar, Balut is a Filipino dish, which
is basically fetal duck egg. The next day the crew took shuttle runs
to the top of Mt. Hamiliton and rode bikes down from the top with
Mr.Taube and Mr.Smith. For those biking down 4000+ feet of elevation
topping over 30+ mph they needed nerves of steel and amazing
coordination to make it down in one piece. On the way back home those
daring went with on a mountain biking trail back to LCPA with me.
Starting from the park entrance I took them up Halls Valley Trail,
then taking Washburn Trail down. Plenty of climbing and bumpy
descents, mixed in with a couple of spills made it a life changing
moment for the three young men that joined me. Despite the big focus
on biking, it was more of a bonding experience for themselves, to see
how much they can push their bodies and minds to that limit and to go
further. This is the type of learning that can't be taught in a
classroom!Congrats and thanks goes to all the advisors and venturers
who made the trip amazing! Also big thanks to Mr.Rodriguez, Mr.Smith
and Cycles of Change for loaning bikes for the trip!

RE: [RBW] Re: bar ends for woodies?

2010-05-17 Thread Frederick, Steve
Ritchey makes a bar end for bars with more sweep--the clamps are angled so that
they don't stick outward. I had a set on some 17-degree sweep bars I used to
run and they worked pretty well. I don't know how much sweep the Bull Moose
bars have but from pics it looks like at least that much.

They are just basic black barends so no aesthetic match for your woodies. I
suppose you could cover them in leather or something...

They're not Riv-ish but I have a spare set--contact me off list if you'd like
to try them.

yeah, you are right - M-bars would provide more positions, but i didn't fall in
love with them on an XO-1 i had..

and i get at least 2 positions from the bull moose.. but just not a bar-endy
one.

the mtn-bike bar ends are what i mean - or even the little stubby ovals that
bolt on perpendicular, although with the swept back angle either of those might
not really work - not sure.

[RBW] duluth pack

2010-05-17 Thread scott
Hey everyone,
I noticed yesterday that Duluth Pack is making bike bags again.
Panniers, a bar tube, and a hobo--but the hobo is set up to be a
saddle bag instead of a bar bag. The straps are on the wrong side of
the zipper. I shot them an email asking if they could do a bar
version. Anyway, looks like the old Riv design for the most part.

[RBW] Re: Bombadill fork crown braze ons?

These are standard braze-ons for the Bombadil. For the Atlantis, it
was a running change for later models.

There's no specific rack for these, just another mounting option for
some of the Nitto's, like Mark's rack .

I think it's pretty inspired.

After another winter of yet again finding that another "waterproof" shoe
cover I bought wasn't, these have caught my attention.

For me, my old neoprene booties are the only ones which were mostly
waterproof, but they made/make my feet hellishly hot under most conditions.
Plus, you end up sweating enough to offset any water-shedding effects.

These S.P.L.A.T.S (me thinks: "Strategically Placed Layers Against The
Spray") are interesting. Vented from below to keep air moving around.
Waterproof atop where you need it.

The permeable spot would be at the ankle joint, as water tends to run down
your shins when it's really raining. But, I'm willing to try them...

[RBW] Re: bar ends for woodies?

2010-05-17 Thread Jeremy Till
I don't know of any mass produced woodie bar ends, but they might not
be hard to make...get a dowel of comfortable diameter, cut them down
to the length you want, miter the end so it ends up at a good angle
even with the backsweep on the bullmoose, then think of some kind of
attachment. Maybe some kind of hose clamp, or the band from an old
pair of (road) brake levers with a bolt going into the wood? You may
even be able to do it with some creative lashing...leather cord, or
good old twine 'n shellac?

I politely beg to differ. IME, when you dunk your chain, clean or dirty,
into your wax and let it "stew" (tm), said wax not only trickles, flows,
insinuates, permeates and penetrates into the tiny, intimate orifices
(hhhm) but, in so doing, washes, carries away and lustralizes the
afflicting dirt and contamination. Just let it "stew" (tm).

Oh, and I think that stewing prevent chain stretch because it cooks the
molecules and makes them tougher.

[RBW] Cycle Salt Lake Century

2010-05-17 Thread Darin G.
Enjoyed a wonderful century ride on my new Sam on Saturday, complete
with a mini-front rack, small Trunksack and fenders. Salt Lake City
is not a lugged-steel hot spot and I saw only one other Rivendell
(Atlantis with albatross bars?), a Heron, and a fellow on an RB-1 who
seemed to appreciate that he had a very nice bike but didn't realize
it was a classic. Lots of curious riders came over to ogle the Sam at
the rest stops and I answered many questions about what kind of bike
it was, its intended purpose (everything!), whether I had restored an
old touring bike, and whether the Brooks saddle hurt (I've been
hearing that question for years). I think most people presumed I was
riding it for the novelty and they seemed surprised that this is my
only bike (hopefully not for long--A.H.H. whispers to me in dreams).

As some of you know I am new to the Rivendell experience and I was
concerned that I'd miss the quickness of my "racing" bike. All
anxieties proved unfounded as I was so comfortable on the bike that I
rode the second half much faster than the first and finished with
sufficient gas in the tank to go considerably further if necessary.

I can't wait to ride it home from work today.

[RBW] Re: Cycle Salt Lake Century

2010-05-17 Thread Darin G.
I rode Nitto Noodle bars and Jack Brown Blues for tires. I'd been
planning to put on a faster tire per the suggestions to my "Speed Up
My Sam" post but I didn't get around to it. I have the top of the
stem about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch above the saddle height and the bars
angled so the "ramp" down to the brake hoods is almost perfectly
level. I can ride in the drops, on the hoods, on the "ramp" or the
top of the bar with equal ease.

hmm, but if you tried to run cantilever brakes on "these" cantilever
posts, it wouldn't work out so well.

and in that sense, it is perhaps a misnomer to call them "cantilever"
posts.

are there any epistemologists on this list? can a cantilever post
*be* a cantilever post if a cantilever brake can't be used on it?

Thank you, Patrick. I have a hard time with such questions. And, so
it follows that since the "racer" mount is not supporting - indeed, it
has not event the potential to support - a cantilever brake, we can
not rightly refer to this mount as a cantilever post, lest we violate
certain laws of truth and knowledge.

I'll take your word for it. I've not tried stewing on a truly dirty
chain, but I have always stewed. If that's true, then you could coat
a quarter in grease and leave one clean, drop them both in the stew
and they'd be indistiguishable when they came out, right? Imagine the
wasted time at the solvent tank that I'll never have back! Rats!

Two different ways to get to the same required level

According to the Paul web site, they are "...centerpull brake bosses.
These are similar to cantilever bosses, but are in a different position.

"It is important to note that the Braze-On Racer does not mount to brake
bosses in the standard cantilever position, nor will it fit on U-Brake
bosses. Framebuilders should refer to the included instructions for
mounting dimensions, or email i...@paulcomp.com for more information."

[RBW] WTB: a White industry dingle

2010-05-17 Thread tarik saleh
Yeah, I have a completely non-riv dumb project that would be enhanced
greatly by a White iNdustried Dingle cog. I normally would not ask
here, but last time I was looking for some white industries BMX
freewheels, I got multiple dingle offers from QB owners who shed the
dingle. If you have one in the parts box in almost any useable
condition please email me. (same goes for other single cogged normal
white industry bmx freewheels, only the white industry ones).

Thanks

Tarik

[RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto Bullmoose Bar

2010-05-17 Thread Johnny Alien
Only large Bullmoose bars in stock now and I need the 150 reach. Also
they are no longer doing the clear powdercoating.

Thusly I am still on the prowl as it will be awhile until Riv gets
them and I could use them now. I will trade you cold hard cash for a
set.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto Bullmoose Bar

2010-05-17 Thread Johnny Alien
They are bringing out a second one with a longer reach. The first one
was 150 and the new one is 200. Both will be available but at the
moment they only got the 200 in. They are finishing them so they
won't be on the site for a few more weeks.

Maybe someone that has a set now that thinks they could use the longer
reach would want to sell me theirs so they could get the new size???

[RBW] Re: duluth pack

2010-05-17 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I cannot understand how the Duluth Pack Hobo bag as pictured can be
attached to a saddle. In fact, as far as I can tell from their
pictures, *they* don't either.

The panniers look like a less fancy and less thoroughly thought
through rendition of the upcoming Riv panniers writ large. They look
*too* large to me (9" deep!). I'm sure some folks will want to use
that space and can avoid heel strike and all that. But I'm looking
forward to the Sackvilles, myself. Price matters, though.

RE: [RBW] Re: WTB: a White industry dingle

2010-05-17 Thread Frederick, Steve
Well, I'm a bit confused--White Industries makes a double freewheel the Dos Eno
and Surly makes a double fixed gear cog called the dingle. Tarik, are you
looking for a coastie or a fixie?
I'm using a Dos Eno freewheel on the Quickbeam and it's a keeper, but I have a
Surly dingle fixed cog I'd part with.

Well, sure, but would you ever bother trying to clean a crusty old chain
like that?

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: a White industry dingle

2010-05-17 Thread tarik saleh
OK,
Apparently not clear at all.

to be specific I am looking for the white industries two cogged BMX
freewheel. Colloquially this is a dingle freewheel, brand name as
steve points out, it is not. So yes, Coastie white industrys dos eno
freewheel like the one riv sells. Sorry for the confusion:
http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/white-industries-freewheel/13-082
I would like not to double my investment in a dumb project by buying a
new one to try out. It involves running my big dummy on single speed
hubs as a six speed with three cogs up front for a while, just to see.
see?

[RBW] Re: WTB: Michelin 650b tires

Per the flickr link... The Pencil was painted to match the color (50's
industrial pale blue) of a vintage pencil I found on the floor at
work. Hence the nickname. It's actually more Sheltand pony than
pencil.

[RBW] Re: duluth pack

2010-05-17 Thread Liesl
Check out Frost River, which, after a hiatus, is back in the saddle.
I believe when the Frost River folks parted ways with Duluth Pack
folks, they got the old riv patterns in the deal? I'm guessing it was
Frost River that was making the Baggins Keven's Bag and the Baggins
Loafers before Baggins Hobits went away to be replaced by the
Sackville Hobits--worksmanship on the Baggins looks identical to other
Frost River products I own. But you'll see these FR bags are truer to
the old Baggins saddlebag and pannier designs than the new Duluth
Packs. Incidently, I love both companies.

That's my experience from the few times I've seen h2o with mine.

I have a dedicated fryer filled with a paraffin and graphite mix. I do
clean the chains just to keep that mixture from getting totally
contaminated. Powerlinks let me pop the chain off and dunk 'em as
necessary.

The cleanliness aspect is wonderful, although as mentioned, I don't see
moisture and I just ride recreationally.

I put this set together real quick from existing pics to show the process I
use: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/sets/72157624084142974/

As always, your mileage may vary.

Re: [RBW] Re: duluth pack

2010-05-17 Thread Bill Connell
IIRC, it was Frost River who last made the Baggins bags, and there was
a difference in opinion over who owned those designs once Riv's
contract with them ended. Frost River was/is selling the exact same
Baggins-design bags under their own label though it sounded from
Grant's post at the time that they had no license or agreement to do
so. I'm sure there's plenty about it in the old Riv list archives.

I understand why Rivendell has moved on, but I like this style of bag a lot.

Re: [RBW] Re: paul's racer brakes vs cantis questions

2010-05-17 Thread Paul Price
That is the correct, or one of the correct posts, or bosses. I
interchange the terms but they both mean that thing. True, you won't
be mounting cantilevers on them, but all our brakes use the same
pivot setup that fits on those.

There are several different styles, that one in the picture has a
large offset, it's good for bikes with wide stays/blades. There are
others with a much straighter path to the frame tube. Those are the
ones to use, or your frame builder should use. Nova Cycle Supply has
some pictures of them. Don't look to hard because before you know it
you'll be shopping for a torchand lug sets and super light
tubing..and an Anvil frame fixture. I'm suffering that problem as
I write this.

http://www.cycle-frames.com/bicycle-frame-tubing/CANTI-AND-U-BRAKE-
BOSSES/

In either case it is important to build a simple fixture to keep the
distance between the posts correct and keep them parallel to one
another. Then mount them in the fixture and miter them to fit the
tubes on the frame. This part is important as the side to side
distance is critical, and the miters must match, pretty well, the the
tubes they are to be brazed to. You can also cut a lot off the end
to be brazed to the frame tubes to get the brake arms in closer to
the frame for a stiffer setup.

are there any epistemologists on this list? can a cantilever post
*be* a cantilever post if a cantilever brake can't be used on it?
