[RBW] Romantic poets and cycling literature (Guardian podcast)

2010-01-29 Thread Chris B
Hi All

It may be slightly off topic (my apologies if this is considered the
case) but here's a link to the Guardian books podcast which is
entitled "TS Eliot prizewinner Philip Gross, Andrew Motion on the
Romantics, and the literature of cycling". It's 31 mins long (be
warned). It includes former poet laureate and Keats biographer Andrew
Motion explaining why he considers the Romantic poets so important and
relevant today. If you browse around there's also a nice set of intros
to the great poets themselves. One for Riv Readers... (or in this
case, Riv listeners)...

The second half (perhaps bringing things more on topic) is a review of
cycling literature by the sports writer Richard Williams.

Hope you enjoy and all the best for the weekend.

Chris

[RBW] Re: Low-Mounted Headlights

2010-01-29 Thread Angus
Eric,

I use one light mounted at the front dropout on a Gino mount. I tend
to agree that the light angle for low mounted lights seems to be more
critical.

I now also use a handlebar mounted light.

The roads around here can be rough in places, the low mounted light
does a good job of highlighting the bumps/potholes etc...

Often times the creaking isn't the internal bearings of the pedal but
a loose/dirt contaminated interface between the pedal spindle and the
flush(or sometimes in bad cases not so flush) surface of the cranks.
Not that your bearing overhaul hurt...

Here's the route that I had in mind...

http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ca/corona/937126469423871930

After mile 11 or so, we can bail out and take a paved road back, which
is a pretty fun ride too. Looks like some pretty good climbing either
way though. Or maybe a right or left turn here or there to stay in
the dirt for a few more miles. As far as a meet up, my house is 6 or
7 miles from the trail head, or the 91 and GreenRiver is only a mile
or two the other way.

9ish or 10ish start time??

[RBW] QB drivetrain questions

2010-01-29 Thread Mike
So I scored a QB frame and will be assembling it soon. I'm curious,
there's no problem running a 1/2"x1/8" right? I know it'll work on the
rear freewheel I'm using, but no problems using it with the the
regular Sugino rings up front.

Also, any tips for determining chain length? I know I'll want to have
some leeway for changing gears.

Thanks,
mike

[RBW] Re: QB drivetrain questions

2010-01-29 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
1/8" chain is ok, but it's better to use 3/32" dérailleur chain if
your rings and freewheel will accept it. If the rings and freewheel/
cog are 3/32, the 1/8 chain will fit somewhat sloppily, which will
cause more wear (I think). Since the standard QB drivetrain uses two
chainrings, it makes sense to use 3/32 chain because it's more
forgiving of imperfect chainline. But if you already have 1/8" parts,
use them, but if you're starting from scratch, 3/32 is better.

[RBW] Re: QB drivetrain questions

2010-01-29 Thread newenglandbike
I don't think you'll have any problems using a 1/8" chain.As for
chain length, it depends on your gearing, but if you're going to use
an 18t cog you'll want to select chain-length to run the axle much
farther toward the front of the dropout when on the 40 tooth ring.
Dropping to the 32t ring will move the axle back about 1" (each tooth
you drop changes the backend length by about .125" give-or-take).

[RBW] Re: QB drivetrain questions

2010-01-29 Thread Mike
Oops. Yeah, I have a Shimano freewheel that can take 1/8th or 3/32
chain. The chain is a SRAM PC7X 1/8 chain. I went with this chain as
it was strongly recommended by Harris Cyclery. I figured it would be
stronger but didn't really think about how it would work with the
front chain rings. I should be able to swap it out.

Thanks for the info.

Just wanted add my 2 cents:

If you can make it to this ride, you really really really outta. Yes,
really.

The cause is noble. And the course is also just fantastic. Some of the best
country road riding you¹ll find anywhere. And as Grant mentioned, Chris puts
on a great event. He¹s also trying to promote the kind of riding for which
so many of the Riv models are made in heaven: go anywhere, do anything
mixed surface country rambles.

Cheers to Riv for giving the 80 4 Haiti ride a nudge. Now it¹s time for all
who can to get out there and fly the Riv colors the day of the ride!

Esteban and I will be pre-riding the course with a little extra credit this
Saturday. There¹s no way you can get sick of the riding in this area.

Best,

Dustin

[RBW] Re: QB drivetrain questions

2010-01-29 Thread Jude
I'm surprised that Harris recommended the 1/8" chain considering
Sheldon's advice ...
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixeda.html#chain

If you look on Peter White's site he recommends the 1/8" chain because
it has bushings. I can't find it now, but I'm pretty sure I read
where Sheldon had recommended against 1/8" BECAUSE of the bushings.
http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/fixed.asp
(search on "Izumi Track Chains 1-1/8")

Mr. White had additional information about Cranks. On the same page
he says (my paraphrasing) - track cranks, bb, chainrings, etc. are
built to a higher standard than those intended for derailleur
bicycles. He sells many Sugino cranks on that page but doesn't
include the XD2. Is the XD2 with (I'm guessing) standard road
chainrings a compromise in any way?

I guess these are just theoretical questions since I'm quite happy
with the stock configuration.

I don't have a car, so riding anywhere too far from home adds a
substantial hurdle. I'd love to be out doing more riding in those

I haven't had much of an off-pavement bike for a while, but I'm

Ah the unboxing. How well I remember it. Sigh. I may have to get another
bike just to experience it again.

And you bike looks like a lot of fun, lightclamp or no. :-)

[RBW] SoCal Rivendell Riders (& Friends) Ride - January 31st

2010-01-29 Thread cyclotourist
Updated subject and sharing with out ibob friends. This started out as a
little side ride we were gonna' do Sunday, but figured there might be some
internet folk interested in exploring. Gonna' have a nice little ride in
the Santa Ana Hills. Parking/meet up at Green River, right off the 91
freeway. Several hours of climbing and banging around the foothills. Get
out while you can before the rain hits next week!

Hope to leave @ 10:00 and ride for four or five hours. Wide tires and low
gears would be beneficial, knobbies not required.

Mapola here: http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ca/corona/937126469423871930

Andy is sorta' kinda' leading it, I'm just promoting it a bit.
